Doesn't sound like a bad idea "on paper" but I have so many questions about issues that could pop up in the heat of battle. What if it suddenly has a software glitch and sends all your supplies to the ENEMY? Reminds me of a submarine that had a torpedo go haywire and turned around to hit the sub it came from!

Most likely they use a GPS to retrace their path. The coordinates may be stored on the vehicle and have a back up on the base; if a vehicle starts playing up, a rest signal may be sent to clear all GPS coordinates and then the original coordinates resent, with a silent command, i.e. do not communicate until you reach base or last known friendly position. Easy peasy.

Ahhhh.... MayBe in WW2!!!!
In WW2, US torpedoes WERE Notorious.... on coming back on our boats.
That is Why....US torpedoes are wire-guided...... to prevent, not only the "fish" coming back at us, but to make sure the "fish" is attacking the Correct target without being decoyed!! Once that "fish" has "Heard" the target in question (passively), the TM (Torpedoman's Mate) or ST (Sonar Tech, usually him/her) switches to "ACTIVE" and the torpedo closes to explode Under the vessel and breaking its keel..... keel = back bone of the vessel, you break the back bone you're paralyzed!!!!
