This answered a lot of questions I had regarding external drives (USB or SSD in external enclosure) running TAILS and a mechanism of persistent file storage besides the standard TAILS-version "Persistence Folder". Specifically, I wanted to use the VeraCrypt app. Your video was exactly what I needed. Thanks for the demo & sharing your knowledge!
I spent 2 hours fighting with terminal. Thank you for help
Thanks for this video. There were one or two curves (for example, at one point (during extraction?) when asked, select Option 2 to put files in a tmp directory instead of Option 1 (to install)) but everything else went well. I never would have gotten this done otherwise.
thanks so much i had absolute nightmare trying to get it to work
Pleasure! Glad this niche content is helpful to others.
Thanks for making this video, but it doesn't seem to work any more? When getting to the step to enable the persistent volume Tails says it can't create a persistent volume because there is already a partition on the disk. Any way to get around this? Thank you.
Awesome video! Thank you! 💛
What are your thoughts on using a USB Armory MKII with "containers"/partitions for use on-the-go? I travel a lot & would like a small, single device, for everyday carry. A balance of portability, security, & application availability. The Armory MKII is essentially a small "secure" computer with SD & USB ports. Any suggestions on how, or if possible/practical to create: 1) Clear Net (Firefox) partition; 2) Anonymous (TAILS w. VeraCrypt) partition; 3) a File, Folder, Software partition? Possibly using a secure link to the ports for large files? Maybe this is a crazy pipedream. Thanks.
THANKS!! perfectly explained and VERY helpful!!
Thanks a lot, I really like your channel !
Nice haircut
Thanks! Long overdue haha!

Suggestion: a similar video for Sparrow Wallet.
Totally off the wall question regarding using Tails. I have a Bluetooth wireless mouse that I use with my laptop & I would like to use it with tails. (I hate track pads) how do I add the drivers for it for Tails?
I believe Bluetooth works out of the box on most hardware… have you experimented with Bluetooth settings on Tails?
Can I have Tails, Veracrypt Portable AND my recovery disk on one USB drive?? I can’t seem to find a way since everything is making me format in order to complete.
Having tried this the other night it seemed to have encrypted my computer's hard drive instead of the space on the tails usb. This may have been due to a new step in the current version where you run the code to extract, it gives you an option to extract or to install. I selected install and it never asked where to install it and it could then not mount the image to persistence
Hello, this doesn't seem to work for me. I get an error creating partition. I used AV linux mx-21 and the dd command to create the installation. Tails works fine but i just cant create any partitions. It says there is no table, can't create one as it will erase disk.
Can you make a video about best methods to backup keepass database offline or on a reliable device for a long time?
It's straight-forward. click the 'Database' menu, then 'Save Database Backup...'. Once you've saved it, double check that the back-up is good before saving it to a micro sd. Then mail it to your friend in Iceland!
Hey, interesting question... I might put together an episode on the topic... stay tuned!
Awesome video!
What if your drive doesn't show free space? It just shows the contents of the drive and there's a minus sign asking to delete a partition.
Thanks! SUPER!!!
2:25 This is true, but not for SSDs. Unlike regular Hard Drives, SSDs are bad for plausible deniability, because the TRIM feature could allow an attacker to see what sectors in an SSD are not actually hidden free space, so they could ruin plausible deniability. USBs may also be a bad idea, as some may have wear-leveling built in them like SSDs. But shouldn't be a problem if you encrypt the entire flash drive.
What if you have ext4(LUKS encrypted) instead of exFAT for the 2nd partition, all good now?
I can't see the tails link, it's not in the description as you set or maybe I can't find it.
I believe link is in description, but here it is again in case it isn’t. github.com/sunknudsen/privacy-guides/blob/master/how-to-install-and-use-veracrypt-on-tails/README.md
This one was very good more info
More on VeraCrypt to come!
What about a video on how to add a password to protect the USB/any other access, so that when a device/media is plugged into the computer, instead of mounting it, it asks for a password (so no malware can be installed). Maybe there are 2 passwords. One that works, and another that just seems to allow access ('the password worked') but actually is blocking access.
If I'm reading this right you should have that option within Veracrypt itself; specifically a "hidden volume" or something to that effect. New to all of this myself, but if memory serves me right it's specifically designed in case you're tortured to give up one password, you're still not compromising everything. Should be other vids on here that can explain it much better!
Thank you!!!! 👏👏👏
Please How do i install other programs especially token wallet on tails?
How do you have tails on mac what mac do you use I have m2 and it doesn't work ?
Hi Sun, can you install Tails on an external drive? I have dual hot-swap SSD bays that I wanted to use one of them with Tails installed on it.
External SSD>Tails>Veracrypt. What would the install guide for that? Anyone?
Hello, the admin password confuses me a little bit. Everytime I restart tails, I can put in different admin password every session. So when I log in without it and I try to open my persistence while I'm in tails it asks me about the admin password and if I dont set it every session I cant open my persistence. I hope that make sense, thank you
follow up question, do you think it's a good idea to store sensitive data such as cryptocurrency keys in Tails persistence using veracrypt(I want to use veracrypt so I can use the hidden volume)?
My Idea is that, I would use SHAMIR(2 out of 3) on the Persistence password and Veracrypt password so I can give the usb away for back up then keep the Shares in exFAT so they don't have to remember anything, its pretty much just get 2 out of 3 of the USB. So it would go like this
Persistence SSS(1),VeracryptSSS(1a),VeracryptSSS(2a)
Persistence SSS(2),VeracryptSSS(2a),VeracryptSSS(2b)
Persistence SSS(3),VeracryptSSS(3a),VeracryptSSS(3b)
So In case I disappear they can recover all my holdings, and In an event that someone wrench attack me, I can have a plausible deniability.
I guess that they can wrench the 2/3 of the back up but it would seems like it would be harder to do.
thank you for your videos, it is really helpful!!!
@@danielbrillantes2791 hey! i am planning on doing something similar, did you achieve any success? is it worth it? It would be nice to have any follow up, thx in advance! :)
Thank you
how you start tails on raspberry pi 4 after imge burn ty
Where do we click?
Hey, what's the steps for windows
Anyone with a little help on extracting the binary to persistence after the recent update? I cant figure out the command. I'm not very tech😥
Is this a re-upload? Deja Vu
Yes, sorry... forgot to mention it in the episode. The other version was full of please donate, buy merch... didn't feel right so I deleted and reshot as part of the reset.
Sun, a little confused. After I reboot having created the persistent partition. I go into the disk utility and unlock the partition which then shows me 3 blocks "tails" " Samsung BAR" and a third block which is spit horizontally in two "Partition 3 TailsData 7.5 gb LUKS" and TailsData 7.5 GB Ext4". I dont see a "Persistent" folder anywhere. Am I mounting the persistent partition wrong? So I can follow the rest of the steps but obviously can't copy the binary to the persistent directory.
Found the issue. I didn't put the persistent password in on the initial splash screen, but from the disk utility later which is too late. I completely sped by the initial screen putting only the admin password in.
