Brilliant video, matey. Very nice to see what Palace had to offer on C64 as a few of the games covered didn't make it over to Amstrad. Thanks a bunch for making the video and for the shout-out as well. Oi Oi Oi!
The Sacred Armour of Antiriad has a pretty cool backstory (it's a post-apocalyptic game, and the Antiriad is an in-universe misunderstanding of what it means), and once the game shifts from Fantasy to SciFi it's really a unique vibe. Honestly, this game deserves a modern remake.
I think I'll try to find Rimrunner and The Sacred Armour of Antiriad, I like the imagery of those two. These old C64 games were hard! I often randomly try nice-looking C64 games via emulation and usually play for a while, enjoy, but realise I'll never get beyond a level or two!
What a great video. I remember fondly many Palace Software games, and I concur with your list order. Developers Denton Designs were specially great at sprites and animation. I'm thinking of "Bounces", with pretty spectacular physics and hi-res sprites for the era. "Troll" may be tedious and boring (never played, but I'll take your word for it - it does look kind of dull, playwise), but I do LOVE the character graphics. "Shadowfire", that was quite amazing, as well.
I had Axe of Rage, which was the U.S..version combining Barbarian 1 and 2, played both of those a lot. I also played Cauldron 1 and 2, which was also a dual release here in the states. I agree that both of those were really difficult. Also had the Shoot-'Em-Up Construction Kit; tried making a couple games with it but didn't get too far. And I also had The Sacred Armour of Antiriad, which was Rad Warrior here in America. That was probably my favorite of all the Palace titles. I loved the intro music and played it a lot. It was a lot easier to play than either Cauldron, but the graphics were really cool looking.
I didn't realise Cosmic Pirate had an 8 bit release - I played it on the Atari St and thought was alright. They did some decent games on the c64. I always liked their logo as they used similar or maybe even the same for their palace pictures side of the business (The Evil Dead)
Cauldron 1+2 were great along with barbarian 1+2 I may be wrong but I always have an image of that purple monster biting my head off in the game (did it do that?) and finally I didn’t realise SEUCK was made by the same people I spent absolute hours with that trying to bring a game idea to life only to stop and then try to make something different (oh the impatience of youth!)
An interesting list, and I would agree on the top 2 as a fan of both Barbarian and SEUCK. However... Personally I would put Rimrunner much lower, definitely a case of looks good but plays poorly. And I really enjoyed Cosmic Pirate (which was sold on the Byte Back budget label for the C64 version, Palace published the 16-bit versions). I really got into it and managed to complete most of the Spacetruck missions; the initial section is learning how to pilot your ship on the three simulators and you need a high enough rating to start taking on missions.
I had Barbarian 2 and Antiriad on the C64, I managed to complete Barbarian 2 but couldn't figure out Antiriad, even though one of the viewers for C64 magazine said it was easy to complete lol
Palace made some decent games for sure, played most of these featured. Not really a fan of Cauldron (soz Shuv) the controls are just so off putting, RimRunner's a cool game, loved the Barbarian games too. Antiriad is one of my all time fave C64 games, so good! Stand out for me has to be SEUCK, I spent lots and lots of hours on that, designing levels and graphics, title screens, great piece of software pity the Amiga version wasn't as good. Great list m8
Loved and Hated Barbarian 2 in equal measure it was frustratingly hard at times but had that "one more go" vibe that just about let you forgive the toughness. Still prefer the original though
Holy moly S.E.U.C.K. I had C64C back then but for some reason S.E.U.C.K. didn't load on it but froze during loading. I was so determined to get it working I ended up trading my C64C to the older version on which S.E.U.C.K. would finally load and I got to make some super crappy shoot-em ups and boy was I happy about it. Good effin times.
Caldron - I loved the graphics, didn't like the super-hard gameplay. Caldron II - I think I tried this once and immediately decided that it was more annoying than fun. Barbarian II - I hated this game. Unlike the first game, the animation was stiff and slow. If you didn't get the timing just right, you wouldn't hit the creature, and then it would hit you. Jumping over rivers and pits also had to be timed perfectly. And the way every area is shown from the same perspective with just the compass showing which way you're facing, messed with my sense of orientation. Barbarian - Definitely my favorite game from them. I could usually manage to make it to Drax, but I could never defeat him. I would occasionally be able to dodge the first two missiles he throws, but no matter how I timed it, third one always hit me. He would ALWAYS throw one when I was too close to react.
Yeah barbarian 2 is a weird one, I hated it when I bought it years ago but have grown to like it, the problem with barbarian 2 is exactly the same problem as Fist 2 had, it was just too far removed from the original so people bought it expecting one thing but got another. Cauldron 2 is a b*stard that's for sure but you do get used to it
The Cauldron games were such unforgvable wastes of potential. Lovely art-work, technically serviceable enough, but let's be honest, it'd be hard to make them less fun to play than they were/are. They are horrible, horrible games to play and always were.
Not really it's not... Are you from the UK? I have 2 options.. either use my real voice or use ai but when I changed my mic before people even complained then thinking it was AI so I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place....by the way what you hear in these videos is my posh voice .....

"Hexenkueche" is pure childhood featuring my all time favorite sprite ❤
Though "Jack the nipper" had a similiar impact on me, come to think of it...
Not seen rimrunner before, looks really interesting
Yeah personally I love that game, it's a bit weird and repetitive but no different to defender , people need to embrace it more and give it a chance

Maybe I should have used the American names as Manshovel is from the states ....
Some interesting titles here

Very nice collection. You dont seem to be satisfied with many of them but i just might try some, especially that antiriad game, 3D tennis also.
I brought a few of these back jn the day , barbarian 1 and 2 .rimrunner had some lovely parrallax scrolling , showed what the c64 could do ,
Cauldron 1+2 were great along with barbarian 1+2 I may be wrong but I always have an image of that purple monster biting my head off in the game (did it do that?) and finally I didn’t realise SEUCK was made by the same people I spent absolute hours with that trying to bring a game idea to life only to stop and then try to make something different (oh the impatience of youth!)
Cauldron 2... I managed to make a map of a larger part of the castle :)
So difficult cauldron 2 but also so satisfying at the same time when you manage to reach that place you been trying to bounce to for 10 minutes....
@@oldstylegaming Never survived that long :)

Barbarian my favourite weapon fighting game🤘🏻
Surprised SEUCK wasn’t number 1 given the legacy it has created!
I have good memories of Cosmic Pirate on the Amiga, but who knows, it could be nostalgia!
nah it was much better on the Amiga
I had Barbarian 2 and Antiriad on the C64, I managed to complete Barbarian 2 but couldn't figure out Antiriad, even though one of the viewers for C64 magazine said it was easy to complete lol
Lovin' the music in Troll, though.
yeah ill give the game that...the music is pretty damn good
@@oldstylegaming There were so many games on the C64 that I loaded up just to leave the music play, not even playing the game.

For the time it was brilliant.
Would that be George Cauldron 1 and 2? :D
Could you make a video about emulation?
Can you extend on what you want?
@@oldstylegaming whats the best option to play games from specy on pc and android? ❤️
@@angeleocorrodead so maybe a video on the best emulators for each of the systems ?
@@oldstylegaming that would be great too.

hard to understand him without subtitles

Love the accent, mate. Don't ever change. Do a vid in your 'regular' voice sometime!
I can understand OSG better than some of my fellow Americans. Stay you, OSG.
Thanks mate
