1 June 2024 Newhaven Fort

Newhaven Fort is situated on Castle Hill overlooking the town of Newhaven and the English Channel. The fort was originally constructed in the 1860s as part of the Palmerston Forts, a series of coastal defenses named after Prime Minister Lord Palmerston.
During World War I, Newhaven Fort served as an important defense post against potential enemy attacks, particularly from German naval forces. The fort housed various artillery pieces and military personnel tasked with monitoring and protecting the coastline.
In World War II, Newhaven Fort played a key role in the defense of the South Coast of England against German air raids and potential invasion. The fort was equipped with anti-aircraft weapons and searchlights to detect and deter enemy aircraft.
Today, Newhaven Fort is open to the public as a museum and visitor attraction. The fort features exhibits on its military history, including displays of weaponry, uniforms, and equipment used by soldiers stationed there. Visitors can also explore the fort's underground tunnels, gun emplacements, and observation points, providing a glimpse into its strategic importance and the daily life of its occupants. The fort's location offers stunning views of the surrounding area and the English Channel, making it a popular destination for history enthusiasts and tourists alike.
