Al Murray is a brilliant comedian, his on stage persona is a Cockney pub landlord, (a cockney is someone from a certain part of London) (a pub which is short for "public house" is known as a bar to you) (landlord is someone who owns or runs the pub). He is also extremely intelligent, especially with history. He is well worth watching more of.
Cockney means an inability to speak English...drop your final "r", mispronounce l/ll as "w", "th" as "f", final t as a so-called glotal stop (lmfao) and dropping the aspiration of "h" left, right and centre. Did Murray really go to Oxford? Oxford failed him.

I was fortunate enough to go to Great Britain and Germany in 1985. And my initial response to Great Britain was 'FANTASTIC' lol!

- The pub landlord - of which you have watched is a parody of a certain kind of person who runs a bar/pub - usually ex-military usually not classically educated, but quite bright, usually quite outspoken, lives in a small world and usually right of centre and harks back to the 'empire' days
- This particular sketch is about small Britain envying the US, by mocking its achievements, by comparing things in British history, and is actually poking fun at little Britain
- Alastair James Hay Murray is a polymath - Writer, Actor, Historian, Political Satirist, Musician & has multiple degrees.

Greetings from Yorkshire. Al Murray is taking the part of a typical North London pub landlord. Classic behaviour and bar talk known as banter. I've known many of them I used to deliver beer, ale in casks, barrels to pubs. It's a sophisticated form of humour which we take the (piss) out of day today life, politics, history and our selves. Playing with the language. Laughing at the caricature. A Geaser is cockney respect for a man. As in:- He's a Tasty Geaser. Beer ale doesn't come in a cans, it's draught and warm, full of flavour. I used to brew it. Have you seen Black Adder ? Al Murray is a History Teacher has a degree in history. Thanks for sharing.

To use the proverbial "that's one hell of a rabbit hole" is almost an understatement, the US has some great standup comedians but less than a handful can stand tall next to a British standup comedian, they operate and a whole different level.
It's often very dry witty humor, self degrading even, and it ranges from family friendly all the way up to "What the actual F did he just say?!" (the last will be extremely dark and extremely funny!)
So yes, go for it, explore more British comedians, for some you might need a translator at first tho ;) (heavy accents)

Bill Bailey (family friendly comedian/musician)
Billy Connolly (naughty family friendly story teller comedian)
Sean Lock (very naughty, not so family friendly, very dry and dark humor)
Jimmy Carr (dark as night humor, rude af, weirdest laugh around, extremely funny)
Ricky Gervais (dark, doesnt give a flying rat's a** about pc culture)
Franky Boyle (illegal lovechild of Jimmy, Ricky and Sean.. says enough)

Don't worry, we love you guys - Al is just playing a rather ignorant character. People like this do exist and most of us have met one, hence why in Britain we find it funny. They usually hang around in British pubs and that is why Al created his 'pub landlord' character.

The "British invented gravity" is a reference to Sir Isaac Newton. He didn't "invent" gravity but he discovered the law of gravity which changed the way we understand the universe.

When he says it does not matter who comes first when you are on your own, it was a double entendre. (Two meanings) He was firstly referring to the US winning a race where no one else was competing, but also talking about masterbation. If you watch, he shakes is right hand as if it is sore, and says “well, it’s been a year”. There are subtle joke right through his act.

Al Murray himself is a highly intelligent and educated man. The Pub Landlord is his main comedic character which is a parody of, well, opinionated bigots. Al himself is a knowledgeable historian, I've seen him lecture on World War 1, out of character of course, but just as entertaining. He also stood for Parliament on an anti brexit ticket. He's a top geezer.

Back in years gone by the Public House was often the centre of a village, where many of the villagers would spend time. The landlord would often have information about things from dealing with traders and visitors and so it was a respected position. Al's character is said Pub Landlord hence why he talks about so many topics but always throws comedy in. He does take the mick out of all countries, especially the French, but if you notice, his biggest mock taking is his often outlandish way of presenting Britain. Hes patriotic in a silly way. Al also studied History at Oxford University (dont know what qualification) and he often throws that into his routine. His "We've defeated every country at war" is proof if this

As someone from great britain since you mentioned it we only cut our grass or have bbqs when the sun is out which is a rare occurrence over here. We brits come back to life when the sun is out and it doesnt matter where you go in the uk it still applies.
