- @MerlinsOldSchoolGarage and Makay are working on the Radial engine he picked up in Buckeye, AZ. Merlin is working on getting in mounted up on the trailer and torn down to see if this engine will even be useful to him! Follow along!
Radials leak, it is what they do... I was hoping Merlin was gonna make a swamp boat with this thing... 😉
If he does, and sells tickets to ride, I'm in!!!
Or a dune bus buggy ha ha funny 😂😂.
That would be a ride and a half!!!
Most air boats use a VW or Corvair engine. That thing would power a huge air boat.
For all the world famous swamps of Lake Havasu Arizona?
I can not wait to see and hear that baby fire up. Merlin, I am in awe of your skills and "fun" quotation. I hope a bit is rubbing off on me. Thanks being so dang fun to watch and learn from!
I'm a retired A&P mechanic, mainly worked on business jets but we had an old guy once who had an old Stearman crop duster with a radial engine that'd come by every now and then. I don't even remember who made the engine. You had to either start it once a day or pull the plugs to drain the oil out of the bottom cylinders. Took about 10 minutes of priming and cranking before it would start. Even after an overhaul it still leaked oil all over the place. Very powerful engine but get ready for some headaches, they're no cakewalk.
I really think your middle name should be project. You never cease to amaze me, Merlin !!!keep up the great work.
Hi Merlin I'm 80 I'm in love with your flatbed and your little semi. really enjoy your channel along with your buddy's in Utah and Colorado your channels keep me going .I'm an old off road and rock crawling. I had a 1975 jeep C j --5 it was a Frankenstein with a Chev 350 . YOU GUYS KEEP UP WITH THE GREAT VIDEO'S 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you Merlin and everyone else involved!
That's going to be quite the sand buggy with that engine!
Land ,air, sea Merlin got covered , when thing fire’s going sound like all Military aircraft flyovers in Havasu ! Let’s go boys
This is an exciting project, if anyone can get it running you can Merlin.
You're amazing, Merlin! I know a little about a lot, but you know a lot about a lot.
Can’t wait to that monster run.
That radial engine is massive.
What a fabulous display piece that radial engine will be. Another great video. TY
What an adventure.
You never ever sees to come up with a great content, keep going young feller
This will be cool to see and hear running
I could almost imagine the off-road rig built around that monster
You gotta get that thing going it's so awesome. Watch out the engine and trailer don't fly away LOL!
This is great I always want a set up like this, really looking forward to seeing it run.
outstanding and awesome as always.thanks for sharing and taking us along.
You need to put that motor on a boat like they use on the swamp you sit up high the motor is behind you like in the old tv series gentle Ben you got the motor made for a prop build a cage for safety
Awesome!
Hey Merlin Brad McKay … This thing is going to be Epic Amazing and Awesome 👍❤️💪🏻✌️☮️
Impressive......
Hey Merlin
Thanx for sharing your experience with your work and your experience
Have a Great Day 👍
THANX
I thought you said you was cutting that frame out dropping it down inside the frame of the trailer
Yes but the propeller still have to go on to cool the engine.
Pretty cool !!
It's a beautiful day in Gqeberha in South Africa.
Been watching your videos for a while. I'm a bittiva VW Beetle fan.
Please include some footage of the Old London Bridge situated in Lake Havasu City if you get a chance to. Thanks.
Thanks for taping!
Thanks for sharing this engine teardown! Oh by the way you might be thinking about a bigger shop! LOL
love those ol'radails bah bah black sheep. corsair,
man you will do it.
Massive radial engine, what is that going in? Not that little ultralight? LOL
Motor mount was solid to the engine and then shock mounted to the airframe. Just like the Pratt & Whitneys.
I’ve been waiting to see what you do with this Radial Monster. Happy Wednesday gents.
That engine is heavy! The truck raised up several inches when you lifted it off.
Get it running and put a prop on it, then hook the trailer up to your VW ute and use the radial to push the VW down the road LOL!!!
I saw previous videos I knew u were going to get a radial engine!
Merlin you da man.
Aziz! Light! 😂
Not many fellers have a 9 cylinder disco ball hanging in their garage, Nice!
Is that the engine that is used on the Dromader Crop Dusters? Years ago I help change a cylinder assy on one! I was impressed with the engine . Don't lose the intake gaskets.
Worked on R-1820s many years ago but rare to see them stripped to this state.
This is SO impressive! I've been around aircraft with radials many, many times and have the utmost respect for the mechanics who maintain them. Nothing sounds as good as a radial.
Brings back memories. Been a while sense I worked on one of them.
Maybe you could help him out if he has any questions about it.
Hey Merlin,
No idea what you will do with it, but I know it will be cool.
Take Care
Don't know how you do it Merlin with all those projects going on.
I admire your knowledge of all things mechanical ...Great work.
that is going to be wild to see it idling
Man I can't to hear that bad boy run
Merlin so many cars I think you need a parking garage in your back yard 10 on bottom 10 on top
Maybe this old ones that lift above each other.
Radials just have to mark their territory
This is going to be an interesting project to watch!
Yeah, those radials leak oil! If you look at any airplane that used them, you'll see oil streaks along the fuselage behind the air vents.
How are you going to provide air flow over that engine with it on a fixed mounting and without a propeller?
You also need some means of "clearing" the bottom cylinders before start up. The oil leaks down internally too, and fills those up. If you watch the startup procedure on airplanes with radial engines, you'll see the ground crew using the prop to turn them over by hand a dozen to two dozen rotations, to get most of that oil out of the lower cylinders before starting. If that isn't done, the engine will lock up.
Imagine having to do that on the B29, B50 and B36 that my Dad flew back in the 1940s and 50s. The B29 used four double row Wright radials that had twice the number of cylinders and twice the displacement of what you're working on, fitted with 4-blade props about 18 feet in diameter. The B36 with six pusher engines used even larger 28 cylinder, four row radial engines!
just dating myself-i was aircrew in a Navy US2B called a Stufe( cant spell) out of Moffit Field Ca. it had two 1820 engines they were loud and very strong, take care
Quite a challenge Merlin .... love seeing it !
My buddy Mike Pupich had a B25 (The Heavenly Body) and it was kick going down to his hanger in Van Nuys and watching his crew tear into those old radial engines. He’s long since gone and I really miss those days.
Good build, good luck with this build. U're a true one of a kind.
interesting !!!!That engine looks like it's gonna shake that lil' trailer. Does the blade have to be on to keep it balanced ??? Great video..
This is so cool! When it first fires it will be Epic!!!
Thanks for sharing 🇨🇦
Just crazy!! From a VW to airplane stuff.
Just amazing show thank you for keeping me learning every video.
Can't wait to see this one spitting flames!
Radial Radical Mega Maga Sand Rail.😊
I was thinking it was either going to be a wheeled airboat or a hovercraft. It will be cool no matter what Merlin makes.
That would make one hell of a wrecker engine. Think you could burn 20 gallons of fuel just starting it. I think you have a better plan than the wrecker. 🤣😂🤣Thanks for all the great videos.
It's gonna be awesome 👍
Think I heard from a guy with a radial engine that it had to have a special prop on it to simulate a load, or it could run away. Interesting project, they sound awesome.
WOW. I've never seen a trailer fly but Merlin can do anything 😅
Here in Canada it's nice for being February it's 44 degrees and sunny out I love it
Radial powered rail? 😏 (you know it would be cool) Wheelie for as long as you want and the exhaust, the beautiful exhaust!
Looking forward to a close up interview with this monster! Always wondered about similar motors over the years, have only got paper close, lol! Thanx !
Build a oil collection pan into the trailer under the engine to collect all that leaking oil.
There's a guy in Australia that cut two cylinders off a Rolls Royce Merlin rotary engine and built a motorcycle out of it. His name is Lucky Keiser. The engine capacity is about 4.2 litres.
Merlin, I sit and watch your videos then read a lot of the comments and know that I'm not the only one in awe of your knowledge! You are appreciated in the Mechanic and fabricating TH-cam world and inspire a lot of people that all things are possible! Catch you on the next. ✌️ 😊
thanks brother for sharing for the top mount what about a roll cage still off of the finders that way you can make a propeller side block
Cool!! Is that Pratt & Whitney? What aircraft would that engine propel? She's high-maintenance, You have to pull the lower spark plugs before startup to avoid a hydro lock. But you knew that
I can’t wait to see this bad boy fire off
Im about 20 minutes north of Cincinnati. It was 65 degrees today and 41 tonight. That is a big motor
Oil leaks are common. In fact before starting the engines ground crews would "walk" the engine. Up to right men form a line and as the men approach the engine from the side the first would grab the prop blade and walk in (rotating the engine). Each following man would do the same then return to the line end and then follow through until the engine has been "walked," (rotated) two complete cycles to get the drained oil out of the cylinders so the engine would not hydrolock from oil in cyclinders
But how is this going to fit into a sand rail?
I was heading home and looking forward to this video! I saw a thumbnail this morning about "LARGEST" and was hoping it would be about this radial engine. Silly idea....think Florida fan boat but mid-engine? LOL
The smallest amount of anti-seize will cover everything that you didn't want it on. Good to use where needed though. I've always loved the sound of a radial engine running. Eager to hear this one.
If you didnt take on any new projects, how long would it take to finish a few you already have?
Great channel Merlin.
Merlin thank you for the great videos . Those old radial engines are like 318 Detroits. They always leak oil . When they don’t leak you have a problem. Thank you for sharing. Can’t wait to hear her run . 👍👍👍
Interesting to see where this ends up if it starts.
I love the sound of those old engines.
Thanks for your vid 😇💟💟💟 Love and bless you Merlin, yoo-hoo the airplane motor what a adventure soon you can cool down the neighborhood going to be very interesting and the sound is going to be great ear 👂 deafening great good job 👍😁.
Man, this is cool. Thanks Merlin
Better get hearing protection for your neighborhood lol best of luck looking forward to start up
Merlin, you never cease to amaze with your talents and know how for all things mechanical. That radial engine is a big project and you are very ambitious to take it on. But if someone can get it running it would be you. Keep up the great content!
You are amazing, rebuilding air cooled VW engines then radial aircraft engines in the next video! You always make it an adventure.
They used radial engines in Tanks and WWII LVT's (Landing Vehicles Tracked) You have to cycle them through because of oil filling the cylinders. Otherwise you would
Damage the engines. The had one of them at our Lagrange Engine show In September at the the Lorain County Fairground in Ohio! Listening to a Radial Crank and Start is
Beyond "Cool"! LOL! Can't wait to hear it Run! Be Careful Merlin! Thanks for the Video!
Can't wait to see this on the Carrera!
I'm looking forward to the day you fire that beast up. I just love big radial starts, they're pretty wild. thanks for the video.
That will wake up the neighbors when you fire it up. I'm looking forward to hearing it run.
Saving a piece of history! This will be a great running display all shined up. Great work Merlin.
Pretty sure that guy Martin has his spitfire engine with 4 trailer jacks on his trailer at each corner
As a teen at a farm liquidation sale from the CA famous Thomas Pear Sheds I purchased a Pratt & Whitney R1830 because I knew as a plane nut those were the engines powering the Boray B17 bombers of my youth kite flyin days, with the pilots that loved my homemade eagle kite enough to fly around it dramatically and stopped by to see it the next day. I spent years gathering parts and had the modified Impco Propane kit that was providing fuel rebuilt and fired it on my 21st birthday when someone of 3:13 course found an original rebuilt carb as a present. I donated it to the castle aviation museum and it makes noise every so often as aviation and agricultural history.
Hi Merlin. That is a beast of an engine. Can't wait to hear it make some noise! I think it's going to be loud!
Gonna be the world's best shop fan! Your videos are awesome! Excellent people Excellent content and editing! Always looking forward to the next one!
To your thanks for watching........thanks for sharing it's enjoyable
Of course you will make it Run your Merlin the great 😂 you know so much about everything and it's good because you will always have work. I fix cars and build houses and know plumbing and electrical this way I always can make money.
