Infected blood scandal: Victims set to receive billions of government compensation

- They've waited for decades - many losing their lives, loved ones or livelihoods along the way.
Tomorrow, thousands of victims of the infected blood scandal will get the final report of the inquiry into what happened to them. The government is also expected to approve more than ten billion pounds of compensation this week.
Our Health and Social Care Editor Victoria Macdonald is outside Methodist Central Hall in Westminster, where the inquiry will conclude.
Worse than the post office scandal, and decades later, still no compensation.
I sick of paying for incompetence and the covering up of massive crimes
Yes and Crimes in this instance seem to be accurate if I understood correctly what I heard on bbc 4 radio today. The evidence regarding school with handicapped children being experimented upon is beyond words. I dont know full facts but if even half of what I understood is true from report then heads must roll and people should be put in prison. More to the point this must never happen again in any country.

Justice must be served along with compensation for those affected .Truly despicable. Why can't our Government do the right thing in a timely manner.
Incentives, doing things poorly and slowly is rewarded in politics as you just claim it would have been done quicker and better if you were allowed into more people's pockets.

We went through something similar in the United States. It is horrible. It's the cover up that gets them in trouble everytime. In the U.S. the blood business is an extremely profitable one. $$$

@@illegalsmirf I vote based on policy out of principle lad, only time I ever voted for a Tory was sue hall but that's mainly because I liked her policys for mayor. I have to know the taxes are going to be reduced by 20% to allow independent business growth but they make our as if more taxation funds more things but it makes GDP shrink and gives control to other countries though cheep imports.
You can't just bake a cake and cut it in to thiner slices to charge more for each slice when they have a Monopoly over energy trade health care food water etc they can just shoot you and you have no say anymore

It's horrific that this has been delayed so long, how many people impacted by this have died since? A monstrous delay of justice that we should be ashamed of.
I didn't do it, no shame here. Those who canonise public services might want to consider their unquestioning loyalty though.
It's the same with any public enquiry and compensation. A deliberate attempt, not only to cover up in the first instance but to delay compensation, knowing people will die and they don't have to pay out. Corruption in plain sight but they know they can get away with it.

It's insane to me that this has still not been dealt with in the UK. We started compensating everyone annually by 1989 in Canada, by 1996 we had our official commission by 1998 compensation was announced and the blood donation system completely reformed. We charged people and the last payouts were in 2002 for people who were not included in the original group of victims who were infected in the 1970s. I cannot believe this is not dealt with. You give these people an early death sentence, many already dead, and then you fail to apologize and charge anyone and do your best to help them move on with their lives. This is disgusting. The world is so distorted and crazy.
I was offered blood in 1996 because I needed a blood transfusion. Fortunately the doctor told me that they didn't check for hepatitis c etc. of course I refused it. They are still not being honest the cut off date is wrong.
Who were the Prime Ministers, Health Ministers and senior medical personnel collectively responsible for this disaster at the time and will anyone historically be held to account ?.
Clinton was governor of Arkansas at the time and they were selling the uk blood from prisoners, they KNEW what they were selling.

We are the public and they have our money problem is they have a mega overdraft 😂 which we are paying for then they have the cheek to tell everyone to have at least £6000 savings ……lets face it most people who live in south east go from one pay cheque to the other juggling credit cards and overdraft because pay doesn’t reflect outgoings ………. I haven’t been on holiday for decades. I don’t live a lavish lifestyle and work full-time for local government what’s happening with our society. We need to get this sorted. A proper wage for a days work and basic infrastructure and medical care should be the least we should expect from all our taxes. We cant afford wars or expensive weapons we have lives to save and homes to build……so many important projects need to be started and they just spend our cash like its water …….or cynically distract us with talk of refugees fleeing in rubber boats. Let’s face it you would have to be pretty desperate to risk your family in a rubber boat. Let’s stop fighting wars in other peoples countries and start by making our country a place we all proud to call home.
What all these scandals highlight for me is the utter contempt - the Govt , MPs , the Judiciary , the Civil Service , the Police The Post Office The Water Companies NHS bosses- have for ordinary people. Am i making myself clear -
May there finally be recognition and understanding for these people. So much damage done while it was known.... my god , humans can be so horrific to each other.

I worked in politics. It attracts the slimiest most self-serving people and way too many politics and law degrees and not enough scientists, engineers or doctors to make good policy. The good honest folks get driven out of the system. All you get is a pack of greedy liars.

It needs to be a serious crime to try to quiet, subdue, threaten, suppress, intimidate, or stop a Whistleblower in any way whatsoever. Why? Because an organization, especially large ones, cannot improve or get better or become more efficient when such a suppressive environment exists. Knowledge requires truth, and knowledge is necessary in order to become aware that a problem exists which needs to be changed or fixed in someway. Suppression leads to a severe, deteriorating lack of quality.
Those who've died are heroes whether they wanted to be or not, and need a large prominent memorial with their names and the promise, "Never, ever again."
That would mean the Covid (experimental) vaccine will be the next scandal. Hopefully it won’t take 40yrs.

1997 our family member died, Nineteen Hundred And Ninety Seven. They knew the blood was bad when it was given to the people who suffered from Hemophilia! 27 years ago and still not sorted out.
As our government says "nothing to see here , move on".

My daughter has given blood for a long time but recently stopped. She said they arent any questions asking which jabs people have had because many are suffering with blood clots!! I wouldnt trust anything these days n look how long situations have been left!! Terrible for these families!!😢😢
They test it now, the tranfusions they're speaking of in the 70s are not the same as a blood tranfusion that happens in 2024. You also cannot really decide whether you take the blood or not if you're in a situation where you require the blood to survive. You either decide to take it or you potentially die.

You're likely to be fine if you've had no ill effects to date. Hepatitis and HIV would have shown up long ago. I suppose you could request some tests and see where that goes, I would guess nowhere but not much else I can think of.
You can request a blood test kit for hepatitis C from the NHS. Go to their website to request it. It’ll test whether you have or have ever had hepatitis C, which was what the infected blood had. It causes liver disease amongst other things.
You should be fine if you haven’t seen any symptoms for 50 years, thank goodness. As the other commentators recommend, if you go to your local doctor and request a blood test for Hepatitis C and HIV they can give you one
Ryan White, a hemophiliac who used Factorate, died from AIDS in April 1990. He'd been diagnosed in 1984. He was 18.
