ABOUT ME
Hi! My name is Margot and I am a professional artist and graphic designer. My parents like to joke that I was born with a paintbrush in hand. I started my career after graduating from the renown Parsons School of Design in New York City and spent over 15 years creating and designing for many of the world's top Fortune 500 brands and companies. My painting journey started as a side project and a creative outlet for me to step away from the computer, go back to my "roots" in fine art and to hone my skills as an illustrator and painter. I started posting some of my work on instagram and the rest is history. My work is inspired by all the things that I am passionate about. Ballet, travel, graphic design, color and finding a world of beauty in all facets of everyday life. I hope you'll join me in this TH-cam journey as I take you through all the tips, tricks and trade secrets I've gathered throughout the years. I hope I can teach you some of what I know, help you discover your creative voice and I hope you enjoy this Channel!

I find it helpful to turn up saturation as well for finding unexpected colors
Thanks
This was fabulous. I teach dyslexic students, but my primary job is teaching teachers to teach dyslexic students how to read. One of my presentations is teaching the different task jobs/talents of right/left hemispheric dominance. You have just done a fabulous job of demonstrating and describing the difference in an artistic way. Everything you said also applies to learning to read. I love it when the science of reading and the science of art collide (probably combine would be a better word.)
Thank you so much Anne! What incredible inspiring work you do. It must make a huge difference to your students to have a teacher that cares so much about what they teach and about the outcome of her students.
ps. thank you for the gift as well. It means the world to me!
I consistently learn so much from this channel! Thank you so much Margot 😊
Hullo Margot, I think this is an excellent tip for phone use! I watched another artist making pastel paintings and they took a photo of a reference and turned it gray and dialed up the contrast to allow the artist to see blocks of shades and create a better under-painting! Wonderful tips Margot, Thanks and Please keep them coming!
I knew about using my phone for the gray scale but for color mixing too, that’s a huge game changer. This is definitely a wonderful valuable tool for painting. Thanks for sharing this information with us!
Glad it was helpful! ❤️
Margot, you combine such entertaining videos with instructive art and painting skills. I love your tips from the art school you attended. When did you ever have time to be a ballerina? My favorite tip from you was the soap holder for paint brushes.
I agree 😊 Fun and informative. And I'm using that soap holder, too. So pretty and functional.
I think the left side of my brain needs an off switch (or at least a dimmer switch!) 😂 My job is VERY left side dominant so I really struggle to let my right side have a say in things! In art I always seem to get bogged down in details and patterns (and paint quite "tight") and completely miss any of the sense of "life" to my art. I would love to add more of a sense of freedom to it.
Both my left side and right side of the brain were attentive and somewhat cooperative as they worked together to synthesize the information that you so clearly communicated into a common understanding. Really good stuff!!
Cheers to both halves coexisting in harmony! And thank you for watching 🥰
Thank you. This was great. Hadn't thought of using the phone for anything other than reference pictures. Great tips. Look forward to your videos each week for both learning and laughing.😄
Ah, a new tool for my artwork! Thanks!
I love you sense of humor! ❤😂
I love that book and that edition. Your video is terrific. I need to let my right brain create again.
That book is a treasure, when I need back to basics in drawing I read it and make the exercises again ❤
Super helpful and as always so entertaining!
So glad!
Margot, You are such an amazing artist; however, I think you might belong in Hollywood!!❤❤
Awww shucks. I’d like to thank the academy…
One thing I love doing is taking picture of a piece I'm working on at various stages, partially to post on my socials and send to friends, but also I tend to catch problems I wasn't seeing before in my piece that I should fix. Sometimes I'll even make sure to flip it horizontally in case there's others I'm not catching. Smartphones are so incredibly helpful, especially these days with how much details it can capture!
If you drop the photo into a graphics program, like MS Paint or Coreldraw, you can use the dropper tool to isolate individual colors in every regen of the image. This is good for beginners, who want to understand all of the colors in an image. But don't get caught up in pixelization. Especially since rgb values don't correlate to color mixing in paints.
Hi. I could not find either of the apps you mention. Did you get them on the iPhone?
@@bonniebishop2755 they're computer programs
Thank you so much, Margot!
You can also put your ipad in guided access mode and use it to trace off of.
Brilliant!
I've watched so many videos on my phone and never thought of this, makes perfect sense, thank you.
I think this is the most useful information i have been given. I have struggled with trying to figure these things out. I just gave up. Now I can see how to get exactly what i was needing. Thank you so very much.
Yay!! That's exactly why I make these videos in the first place! Thank you for sharing!
Thank you! Im struggling with value. All the videos ive watched how did i not hear about using my phone! Great video
Thank you - love this information and the delivery, always informative and entertaining. Have a beautiful evening.
Great hacks as usual!! Thanks for taking so much time to make your content humorous too!! That takes a lot of effort to turn it into video,🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
My pleasure and it’s so worth it knowing it’s enjoyed by everyone ❤️
Awesome video! Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain made all the difference in the world for me! Some great tips here, too, thanks!
All I have to say is:
I ADORE YOU!!! 💕🙂 But I'm saying more.
Margot, you made my day💕🙂
You're amazing, and thank you so much for this valuable information.🖌🎨💕X
Awwww 🥹🥹🥹 You're the best!
Nice video thank you. I use the app 'colour gear' that gives you a very detailed palet of your picture. Love that
This video is so helpful! I recently have some difficulty to starts my projects...
Wow. Never thought about using my phone as a viewfinder. Total game changer. Thank you, Margot! ❤
Nice tips- good use for the phone- especially like the composition tip- always struggle with gettin a good composition- cropping down can help zoom into what is important in a scene and exclude much of what isn't needed- can help focus in on say an s-curve, structure, texture, or whatever it is that the scene is about.
Loved this video. I worked in finance all my life and my boss often said he was amazed at my art since I had a LEFT brain. Great tips with the cell phone. Keep your videos coming Margot.
Thanks
Thank You! It means a lot to me ❤️
I love you so much. Life has been so stressful, and many family health emergencies. Watching you just takes it all away for a bit.❤
I love you, I love your educational quality and I love how much you entertain. A perfect trifecta.
Love you too! 😘❤️❤️
Very good information thank you. X
You’re welcome 😊
Thanks for this wonderful video. I have not used my phone this way, but I do have a view finder. I would love to see how you apply this to a landscape painting.
Fantastic! Thank you!😊
I let my watercolor teacher, destroyed my confidence when I was 19. I decided to eliminate the color that day, and just work with black . I was really excited about what I was learning that day. My teacher said” if I wanted to sit there and play…”. My 19 year old self had no confidence. ( I was art/psych). I only went back to class when I had to to complete the course. I don’t paint in watercolors again until I found you and Kristy💕. I love my art again💕 Thank you! Too bad that I had to wait till I was a grandma of 🙃 7.
What great tips! And, as always, you are so entertaining to watch as well. 😊
Brilliant, thank you! I use my phone all the time to zoom in and compose drawings and paintings, but I’ve never thought of changing photos to greyscale! 👍🏻😊
Learning from you is so amazing! Thank you.
Thank you 🤍
What’s for dinner, hahaha 😂 I can’t even! Tyvm for sharing this! I’ve used my phone for value/hue, but look forward to implementing your other 2 tips. As always, so helpful!💜🙏🌻
Great video. The number of times arty people see the world in more interesting and nuanced ways, can lead to such interesting conversations. A visually rich life is definitely more fun ❤
I have the book you recommend and it is good.
Awesome advice. Love it
this is brilliant, never would've thought of this ❤❤❤
Great tips!
I really love your channel. You're helping me get out of an art rut... and your bright personality brings out my joy. ❤
You’re hilarious Margot😂 And really helpful to nudge my curiosity
Happy to help 🥰😝🙏
Great! Thank you

This was very helpful. Thank you so much ❣️
Great information. Thanks
Some good tips, and love the way you present your videos, with the fun clips, and humour ❤
Very interesting! Thank you, Margot.
Well done Margot, such a great video, learned a lot and I love the funnies❤
I love ur creative insight😊
So happy to hear that it's helpful!
Thank you so much. I have always used the b/w to check values. But the tip to use the camera for composition instead of always trying to find my misplaced viewfinder. WoW. 🎉😊
Thank you Margot!👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
You are so welcome!
Very helpful, and very entertaining! Love your personality. Thank you!!
Great tips, thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much for all the great information. Have a great week.😊
I enjoy your video's so much, they are both entertaining and informative....taking relatively boring subjects and bringing them to life! Thanks for your genius efforts!
Thank you...as a novice painter I find your tips inspiring and EXTREMELY helpful. ❤❤❤ thank you for keeping it both real and fun!
I am so glad I found your channel. I love your videos. Thank you, Margot! ❤
Aww thank you! I'm so glad I found you too btw ;)
Thank you, another great video and tutorial / phone hack 🥰
Nice one❤
Game changer!
That’s what I love hearing! 🙌🙌🙌
I really enjoy your creative presentations and look forward to seeing your videos, not to mention that I have learned so much from you. Thank you! ❤
I am SO happy to hear that. Thank you so much!
Thanks always for your helpful tips, Margot! I learn so much from each one, even though I have to replay it a few times for it to sink in. :)
Thrilled to know I can help you along on your journey. Xo!
This is a really helpful video, thank you! 😊
Glad it was helpful!
Outstanding post! I use my smart phone for some things, but you expanded my knowledge. Plus the fact that you are pleasant and fun makes your site a joy to watch.
Thanks!! Very helpful :) Please note that the idea of the brain being divided like that is no longer considered true. The way the brain work is much more complicated.
This was such a great video!! I'm such a visual learner so I struggle with the right brain left brain fight constantly in my art journey. I now understand why I'm so much better at grind drawing rather than sketching. I'm going to make my own grind out of laminate and a sharpie for future use. I definitely use my phone as an art tool now I have a few more to add! Thanks for sharing your creative tips, so inspiring!! Now if only someone can give me the ultimate tip on being fast. I think this is where my left brain really dig in her heals...all about slow details...when I really just what to essence and to more on before the paper dries. Thanks again!
Thank you
You're welcome
👌👌👌 Дякую за відео! ❤❤❤
Wow Margot, some great suggestions. I already use my phone for drawing…as I often take pictures of flowers, bugs etc when I am out and about…but I never thought of using it for value studies…or really playing around with the aspect ratio…I ‘ll definitely be trying some of these suggestions….thanks a million 😊❤
Hi Margot! I’m new to watercolor and have learned so much from your videos! I would love to hear your thoughts on watercolor pans vs tubes. Is there a difference in the quality of paint? Thank you so much for creating such great content!
love your videos Margot
Thank you so much! ❤️
Teacher Margot! I love all your lessons!! Salamat ❤❤❤
You’re so welcome and so happy it was useful! 😘
The book she referenced most likely can be found at a reasonable price on eBay. I bought a copy for about $6.00 with free shipping a few months ago.
Excellent :) What was the question at the end? So cute to hear your little boy behind part of it :)
That was actually… me 😂 I changed the pitch of my own voice. And the last line was “what’s for dinner?” 😉
❤️❤️❤️
Margot, do you have a downloaded photo app or just use the one that comes with your phone? My Older Samsung wouldn't do well on those close-up shots or shifting to black and white, I think. Any recommendations?
Subscribed ! :)
Welcome!!
❤❤❤❤

Somewhere -- perhaps here on y.t. with another artist -- it was asserted that we could better see the variations in values of our subject by laying a piece of RED ACETATE over the subject. Has anyone else heard that? Has anyone else TRIED it ?!? I keep forgetting to get such a thing when I'm out & about. (Doesn't $🌳 carry notebook dividers that are full pages of acetate?? I need to tie a string around my finger!!!)
How did you pull up the colors on your phone? Perhaps you are using a phone other than an iPhone. I found the video helpful, but can not figure out how you brought your image's colors up under the picture. Thank you.
Top right corner where it says “edit” and the scroll to the right until you see “saturation”. That’s were you can use the slider to turn it into black and white 👍
Thank you. I do know how to turn it into black-and-white, but in your video, you showed actual color buttons, or paint samples if you will, at the bottom of your photo. I do not know where you got those from?
Thank you, Margot ❤😂
You're most welcome!
👋🏼
Hi @awatercolourist! 🥳
My luv. Have you freaking noticed the payoff in SUBSCRIBER STATUS in correlation to your, 'clever as ever' declination video, you remember that silly ol thing that gave me a heart attack where you say, "I just can't do this anymore".
Cruel Trick YOU BEEEEP YOU! You can't tease a gay super fan like that. I was seconds away from pulling a modern Romeo and Julieta.
Luckily, saved by the truth bell...you go on to say your going to need some time, because your baby, our baby...the Margot Show is calling for a conjunction of all things sugar and spice...she's calling out for better production value, editing, content, etcetera.
WOW...I am super happy I've officially, unofficially made you my go to entertainment and educational power-house for all things watercolor, art education, and thank Aphrodite... my beautiful Scrumdiddlyumptious, eloquent and effervescence educational goddess, in her own right.
Sorry, nite time ADHD Museum and rattling-on.
I know you know what I mean. BRAVO DARLING, BRAVO! I couldn't be more interested or happier.
As you might recall....I adore you. And my hand touching the value of truth...your channel, character, comedic prowess, and so on. It's my favorite artistic show to watch when it comes to watercolor with a smear of delicious, freshly cooked up, brain food for the masses.
So, thank you kindly, Margot and congratulations on all the positive feedback I keep reading, concerning your newly vamped channel.
It truly shows that you TOTALLY had a mission in mind.
And starting to pay off in SUBSCRIBER STATUS IT IS!
XO - JAMES
OH MY GOD... I forget to mention, I died, hardcore where you mentioned spacial awareness and that girl just...WAMS - and hits the concrete wall. That was HILARIOUS
