      @@hoangvietnguyen949 Players roll initiative to set the order of turns they take in combat just before each fight. So him saying, "Oh, forget it. Roll initiatives." he's basically saying, "Enough of this @#$%. Fight starts now."

      @@hoangvietnguyen949 It means talking is over and the fight is about to start. The Dungeon Master is pissed, so now it's time to punish them with the only thing players consistently respond to: turn based combat.
      Rolling initiative is the first step to starting combat; it sets the order of who goes on which turn.

      @@stevenweller9413 sorry to burst your bubble, but covid is never going away, unlike measles and polio it is not a disease that we can eradicate. Unfortunately just like the flu, it's too easily transmittable, and unlike other viruses it can be transmitted to animals and back to humans. So just like the yearly flu it has a vast animal reservoir that can never be eradicated. Thankfully it has a 99.7% survival rate, and as the years go by and the virus continues to mutate the symptoms will become less severe and the survival rate will continue to go up, because the goal of the evolution of a virus is so that it can live longer and spread further in its hosts.

    I love that Rob is a PC in this series, and Alan is the DM, when, in the actual D&D campaign, Greg seems to hardly know what's happening half the time! lmao! But seriously, you guys are amazing, and it's great to see Alan finally show up in person and not just in voice overs! Long live VLDL!

      With the ball of chaos, that is the VLDL D&D group, he really shows a huge amount of patience and flexibility. Just Bodger alone would like drive 90% of DMs crazy within a handful of sessions. But that is also why it is so enjoyable and entertaining to watch.

      Started playing at Trentham Army Camp in 1981 and have mainly been the DM ever since. I find 5e the best set of rules to work with, though I still keep finding things I'd never realised... like a recent discovery that Passive Perception is always on & always trumps your active Perception roll if higher... who knew ?

      @@Sten43211 no need to do that. I keep backup statblocks depending on how much players have done in the campaign. Villains in my campaigns basically have phases they can beat down through by doing other side quests (destroy his army, restore the lands of the good king, etc.) and it drops their abilities and resistances and stats. It makes their captains and lieutenants drop as well.
      If players don't explore the world, use the lore, and defeat present and real threats in time, they lose their chances to weaken the villains.

      Also amazing how despite all your efforts to the contrary, you always end up picking the exact WRONG person to make part of your plot hook.
      Or, you try and make something inclusive for your player who has less inclusion and then painfully realize why they have less inclusion.

      @@talyn3932yup, first time DMing and I gave powerful starting abilities to my players but with drawbacks they have to discover when using the abilities.
      Most players used their abilities often, but the two who ACTUALLY had some abilities (or even just normal skills they started with) to solve the situation they were in never tried to use them nor participate in the discussions on how to deal with the situation...
      I had to almost force them to reveal their ability so others take that into account (luckily these abilities have clauses when they can activate without the player's consent under some conditions).

    I feel the pain on this one. I've deviated from the module to write a whole arc with someone's backstory (that they wrote) but they don't even remember their own backstory or pay attention to what's happening in the story. All they want to do is have combat encounters. Very frustrating.

      I fucking love it when the DM incorporates a decent backstory into the game narrative. That moment of 'Oh... shit.' But only if they do it well, I've also had a couple of DMs simply shoehorn bits that are incredibly out of place.

      I feel you. All hard work us DM's put into making their characters backstory have an epic conclusion and they just do not care and act nonchalant about our work. A DM's work is many times unappreciated by some players

      @@acidvash at least they're trying to put in backstory. Even if it is poorly implemented, at least they acknowledged your character exists in the world as more than just a dungeon crawler.
      Granted, some of us who do screw up putting in a character's backstory aren't do good at running but we're trying our best because no one else will run.

      This is actually why I don't name any of the NPCs/towns in my backstory. Sure I have a sister and a home town, I'm not going to remember in 10 sessions though. This way the DM usually prefaces any backstory with telling you how you know them. Unless it's part of the campaign premise, of course

    I think Crunch would have remembered if, at the big moment of the name reveal of Gredulo the wise, there would have been an icy wind going through the cathedral, or a bolt of lightning outside the windows. Could have done with a flashback, too. You have to keep with the traditions, you know.

      The mechanics can be very confusing but the basic concept is easy to understand. Guy (dungeon master) makes a story and you (the player) say what you want your character to do, guy makes the next part of the story based on your characters actions.

    This is why you write everything down, especially names. Then you have to search through your stack of papers to find the small clue that you wrote down ages ago only to realize you lost that spesific paper and now your screwed.

      SO TRUE!! I HATE how true this is... I've tried EVERYTHING!! Keep it all in one spot, make a specific folder/binder/box for EVERYthing and put it all in special places, all the hints/special info in THIS pocket/spot, all the "maybe needed" in That one-- and DAMMIT!! As Soon as I need it- "... wait, I had it right here..hang on a minute/hour/day/Holy SH1T Where Is It?!?..." yeah. Wind up totally embarrassed and waiting for someone to just smash my character to pieces... @$$#!!

      @@ashezheartless9099 Try having different types of paper. That way you can recognize them eaiser if you misplaced them, numbering them should help if you lose them and need to retrace in which sesh you wrote it down.

      @@337dux oh, I didn't want to bore you with all the different things I've tried; different paper, special tabs, white-board, highlighters, different "trapper keepers", different markers, different inks/paints, - even all at the same time! I'm a "high functioning autistic ADHD"(according to some docs that don't care and just slap labels on everything- but hey, I guess it's an excuse, right?) So I'm guessing that's the largest hurdle, and it seems like it's always that *O N E* special piece of paper... that's the one that goes missing.. HA! I've learned to just deal, and do my best. But here's hoping it Never happens to you again! And that it's a fabulous weekend for you!

    As a DM that one hit close to home.
    Player just skipped entire session for the big reveal involving her character, her husband was just puppeting her character that session. The rest of group was “ohhh, that would have been cool” especially when her character chased the villain down solo in the fight and caught him in the last moment with an arrow. In the back
    6 months of work. Aaaarrgh!
