Actually just a TH-cam, a bit of space and a lot of willingness/desire. I started to carve spoons a couple years ago. Bought only a cheap Mora hook knife and a folding saw at the supermarket. Made my own straight knives out of old files. Made one hook knife with a little anvil nailed to a block of wood, using an old chisel. Used my fireplace for central heating as a forge;) Now i'm making my own propane forge and all i had to buy was some pipes for a burner so far. And a bit of refractory powder i will mix with a sand and plaster. Really, it takes much more willingness and effort than money:) And some inspirations from guys like Daniel, Trobjorn, Alex Steel and a lot of other wonderful blacksmiths here. Bertram's channel can be an amazing inspiration. He made a viking style movable "forge" that you can fit in a small bag. If you really want, you can start forging with a bit of charcoal, some mud and stones, some tongs to grab a hot metal (i used old, dull cutters) and any hammer :D
I like the follow up, close in shot, from a different angle, that shows a technique again. A couple of times I was taking note of times and technique, ready to ask "what, why, how" and your follow up angle explained it perfectly.
What I liked most about this project was a fact that you forged the bar down to the thickness of the boss then did the rains set down after. On my next set of tongs I'm going to try that technique myself
I can think of several beginner's tools. Hold down tool for the hardie Scribe for marking stock Master scroll form Rivet header and set Any bottom tooling for hardie
Big improvement in video quality and great pair if tongs too. My first ever forging was a coal rake for the forge, been blacksmithing as a hobby now for 2 years and still use that rake. Thanks for the video.

I would like to say a 500 # Massey power hammer, but I don't think that will get you to build one! Honestly, after the hammer, anvil, & vise, you need the tools to make a set of tongs. So, a punch & drift (although you can use the punch to drift with), and a chisel. Those would be the bare basics. With those tools, you can begin to make all the other tools necessary to start making your own tools (hammer eye drift, more punches & drifts, the continually growing pile of tongs, hardy tools, etc). It's really difficult to make more tools without at least one pair of tongs, a punch, and a chisel. Once those basic tools are available, you can make more of them, but those would be the absolute bare minimum tools.
I like your presentation style and would appreciate if you would could share new videos on shop made: punches, drifts, rivett headers, swage blocks, fullers, etc
Those tongs look awesome Dan, well done, most usefull tool for smithing apart from the obvious 3 would have to be a vice, i can't think of a single project i have made that has not been in it, so on that idea as others have mentioned how about a hardy hold down
Beautiful work Dan! I think that besides the basics you noted, fullering tools that can be used by one person are extremely handy! Also some folks have mentioned a hold down and as an amateur I use mine all the time, made it from a reused lug wrench which had a decent steel. Be Well
Terrific video dude. I like this approach to making the content. You may want to take a look at the sound levels, with the equipment you have now you appear to be shouting at us. Previously you needed to do that for clarity but no longer, I'd say. Beginner Blacksmith greatest tool? Patience..... not quite sure how you can "make" that, but maybe inspire it somehow?

Compared to the ones you showed alongside these Dan I'd say you've made a pretty decent jump in quality. The tongs you've made here would be my pick for the best tool for a beginner to make. Hammers are easily bought, chisels and punches too, but tongs aren't something you can just pull off a shelf. The wolf jaw style, along with the slight goose neck in the nibs means these can be hot adjusted (if needs be) to a pretty wide range of stock sizes. Perfect for a beginner, make one pair and then get on with learning.

A good hold down. Box jaw tongs. Bolt tongs. Guillotine tool. Spring fuller. Butcher tool. Cone mandrel. Bending forks. I could go on, but I think that's plenty.

Daniel, good video. I have a rudimentary question. Would you explain the difference between coke & coal. When people say they are using coal, are they talking about house fire coal? If coal has to be transformed into coke what is it that actually takes place in that transition? Is 1 better than the other? I know this is very basic but somewhere in my learning I have missed this part.

The reins are Centered and have no index. You can uses the left or right hand. I make all my Tongs like this. That's what I was doing with the bending forks in the vise. Good question hope that helps.
@@danielmoss2089 i asked because the only time it was explained was black bear forge, if the top jaw was also the left side of the boss they want to fall to the left, or INTO the left hand, for a 'righty' with the hammer...and so forth, have you heard of anything like this?
I was always tought it was which way you do the second Set down. I turn into my body witch makes a set of Tongs for a left hand. I've seen John's video on this subject and can't disagree. But leaving the Tongs hand can cause you to Forge out of square. Hence why I center them also any one can uses them. I also uses a power hammer daily and this means I hold Tongs in my hammer hand and top tools in my left. Hand Tongs just don't work for me.
What is stricking? That is a lot of hammering for tongs. Most beginners don't know a master smith to strike for them and also would, or should not allow their beginner friend to swing a 10 lb sledge over there anvil. I would suggest a striking anvil shaped object for that, or you will lose chunks of your hardened plate when your friend misses strikes. There are several super simple ways of making them until one learns how to manipulate material. Just take some 1/2" square or round. Cut it at 12 inches, upset 2 inches at the end until the stock is 11 inches. A lot of peeps use 5/8 or 3/4 stock. I don't like to spend a half hour drawing out reins so I start with smaller material. Remember most beginners work alone. Forge On!!!
Honestly I don´t find it educational/amusing when people use the power hammer, I mean the thing with YT vids are to showcase skill IMHO. You´re pretty knifty with that power hammer though;)

Rivet diameter should be about the same as the hinge plate thick Ness. I am for 10mm hinge plates so the diameter of the starting stock is about 10mm.

the BEST TOOL for blacksmiths, beginner or not, is easy to make and very versatile, it's the hardy mounted guillotine tool!
Please show us how to make some punches or chisels to use in the tong making

Centring reins isn't common on most hand forged Tongs as it's a little time consuming. But they sit ace in the hand.

They should probably be lighter, since you're going to be holding them for long stretches of time, you have plenty of meat on the handles
