If Everyone Was Listening was the first Supertramp song I heard and still think it's one of their best songs. Downstream is THE Davis ballad, perfection!
You should visit once their early prog/jazz influenced music from 69-72: It's a Long Road (Beatles-like), Rosie has Everything Planned (Folk), Try Again (King Crimson'ish), Maybe I'm a Beggar (Jethro Tull?), Potter (hard rock!)...

Downstream is, for me, Rick's greatest love song. So delicate, so melodic, so simple. Also has personal meaning for me, puppy love and a beautiful girl and particular sailboat ride back in 1977. Just hearing it takes me back.

@@retroreactions...., "Asylum" is my least favorite song in "Crime of the Century". I find the second section definitely unpleasant to listen. That has a reason, and it totally makes sense in the context of the song, but I always skipped that part, though I love the dramatic bridge before that (and Rick certainly knows how to put in some drama!). But then I turned the vinyl record ("Asylum" is the last track of side 1) and there came the delightful "Dreamer" to raise my spirits. Half a century later (and still having committed no crime!), I'm still amazed at how such a simple song can be so catchy, so effective, and so satisfying!
I think you'll enjoy listening to the whole "Crime of the Century" in one sitting. It's not as interconnected as the Pink Floyd albums, for example; you certainly can enjoy each track separately as you're doing, but the whole experience at once is an emotional rollercoaster that's quite a ride. I think Supertramp did that on purpose, for the listener not to get too comfortable with just one mood, though they later reversed that strategy in "Crisis? What Crisis?", where they grouped all three sad and introspective songs ("Just a Normal Day", "The Meaning", and "Two of Us") in sequence at the end of the album.
This may be one of the reasons why "Crisis?" is so underrated, didn't sell very well, and was panned by the critics (all of that very unfairly IMO; I love it all the way through!). After six vibrant and flamboyant songs (even "A Soapbox Opera", which is somewhat sad, has a luxurious and vibrant arrangement and is full of sonic surprises; it's a bit sad, but not introspective), that winding down at the end probably left many people with a feeling of disappointment.
As for "Downstream", I think it's going to grow on you. You can see that so far it has got more comments here than "If Everyone Was Listening", and that has a reason. Just piano and voice, but Rick made a POWERFUL emotional song out of that. A definite masterpiece that touches everyone (especially Supertramp fans) really deep.

Uh oh...I wonder if I'll like Asylum more or less than Dreamer. I remember it being as sunny and light as Mr. Blue Sky! I need more Crisis soon, but I can say that with several of their albums, especially the very late ones. Yes, some songs I find here are growers, but I can say with 100% certainty that there will never be a ST song that I hate!

Rick ocassionally plays Stevens TalkHouse in Amagansett New York. You can find video here on Yoiutube. He's usually joined by G.E. Smith who played a ton with Hall and Oates among others and was once the musical director for SNL. Carl Verheyen and Mark Hart also show up sometimes.

In short... there is no Supertramp music in the period 1974 to 1982 that disappoints me and there are "many too many" that amazed me.
The double album live in Paris is from another world in every sense, musical quality, mixing, production... almost at the level of Seconds Out (the best live album ever) which is something that means a lot.

I went to Europe in 1981, and my flight was on Air France. As we exited the jetway and entered the terminal at Charles de Gaulle airport (which back then only had what is now Terminal 1, with its iconic "spaceship" architecture that was used in many record covers and music videos), I and some other members of my group shouted in unison: "Bonsoir Paris!" as Rick does in the album. That's how popular that album was. Our flight arrived in the morning, so "bonsoir" was wrong, but who cared? 😂

Haha nice....I love Paris, and on my third visit in 2009, I made sure to play "The Metro" by Berlin as I was riding the Metro, which she references in the song! Your stunt was more epic though 😁

Hey Brandon, thank you I really like the first song, I never heard anything from Supertramp except from what's-their-biggest-hit, which was inescapable at the time.
For some.reason it reminded me of Kate Bush.
Less fan of the second, but it's short and not about unrequited love!
You're so prolific that I can't keep up the pace!
    Cheers from Paris

thanks Brandon, for your excellent comments, and the depth, with which you dive into those master pieces... both are either at the end (of first side of 'Even..') or just before the grande finale of 'Crime..', and let the 2 lead singers of the band shine in a more quiet, focused way; Roger's piece being a bit more ambitious in instrumentation and mood changes, with quite a sentimental touch, while Rick's is just an oasis or hymn, filled with peace and gratitude... 💖

If Everyone Was Listening: a well crafted song, the sparse arrangement highlights the stark lyrics, sang beautifully by Roger Hodgson. John Helliwell nailing his solo per usual.
In the context of the album it comes from, Crime Of The Century, a much needed respite after " Rudy ", and a great warm up for the title track. A nuance that helps the COTC album be the masterpiece it is.
Downstream: Just Rick Davies playing the piano as only he can. Nice that he had a song with positive lyrics, a departure from his usual melancholy.
The album it comes from, Even In The Quietest Moments, this song fits well, the album has a somewhat positive vibe to it. Of course Rick did it in one take, he's that good
As for Rick singing live lately: there were a few videos of him singing with " Ricky and the Rockets ", a joking name for Rick and a few musician friends performing at a club in Long Island, NY(Rick lives there now) from a few years ago. Not sure if they're still on TH-cam or not.
Roger Hodgson was still touring, primarily in Europe

Hey, if you haven't already, would you please react to the LIVE version of "Another Man's Woman" from Supertramp?

  • @Manni59
    @Manni59 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

One of my favorite songs from Supertamp. Although I always misinterpreted the lyrics. I thought the song was about the audience's ignorance destroying art over time. For me, "Crime" is the band's best album. "Crisis" also had very good songs ("The Meaning" for example). After that, the band's music became more and more irrelevant.
