It's astounding to think that a band like Dream Theater, who does all the insane licks they do, could do something as beautiful as this(not putting them down). It just shows how versatile they are. Bands now should strive to be like Dream Theater.
Not wanting to argue, but in the presence of enemies is one of the most epic works by Dream Theater. As for their more mainstream sound I believe signing up with road runner has exposed them to a greater audience and therefore they have created an album which can be more easily listened to and enjoyed by a person who doesnt have a musical patience and the knowledge to fully appreciate true prog.
Yes, his best years were probably 89 to 95. I personally think that in the studio he always delivers; because they take recording at a speed he's comfortable with. His performance live is much less consistant, but that's an inevitable problem after what he's faced. I think his take on Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulance was outstanding, and as you say, it's the tone that makes him stand out. The fact that he has endless shades makes him for me, the greatest vocalist today.
its because dream theater isn't just metal. they're geniuses, and although people call them gods, they're really only human beings and have lives that affect them just the same as the rest of us. thats the true inspiration to their music, and thats where songs like this come from. another example of this is honor thy father. its about mike's ordeal with his "parents" and although im not 100% sure what its about, i think its about his foster parents who abused him in some way.
When I listen to this song, I imagine myself waking up half dead in a barren wasteland staring into the silver sky lit by thousands of stars and a giant moon. Then I suddenly come face to face with a translucent image of the girl once loved, who reminds me of all my suffering and the pain of separation. At the same time it gives me a reason to grow stronger. Omg every Dream Theater song shows me various images in my head, sometimes hard to comprehend. thats why I love their music :D
When I listen to this song... I don't think about anything... It just shuts down my brain and I go into some amazing state. I feel high almost... Its pretty sweet.
nice music, and the video fits well...there's some kinf of a deep, strange feeling that reach us while looking at images of the dark, vast cosmos, and I think that it matches well with this song.
this has got to be one of the most beautiful songs written by a very talented group. whats the song about - 'obsession on one's fear of opening up to the real world'fear of facing himself''being rejected by the world... i think if you listen to the conversations its about more than love between a man and a women.....
very good job... you crystalized the vastness of space with the concept of humanity and consciousness...one of the best Kubrick movies and this great song!!! Do something similar with the great gig in the sky please!!!
Great song. It has never been performed live though! Kevin Moore was replaced on keyboards after this album. When the other members are asked about performing it they say it is "Kevin's song". Jordan Ruddess says he is ready to perform it though. Maybe they will some day. Can't wait for the new Dream Theater album coming out in June!! Studio album #11, Black Clouds and Silver Linings!!!
this song really stands out as different for DT. I like it a lot but compared to their other stuff its really unusual. I love the diversity in DT. greatest band ever.
THE KEYBOARD SOLO AT THE END IS THE SADDEST SOUND I'VE HEAR .
beatiful song by DT. i love how Kevin Moore came up with the name of the song. For ones that are like "wtf is a space dye-vest" well this is what it is: Kevin was dumped after a long time relationship, and shortly after the break up, he was looking through a magazine and saw a girl modeling for a "Space Dye-Vest" and he for some strange reason he fell inlove with this girl, yet he didnt knoe who she was lol.
its bout a model moore saw in a magazine i think...the outfit she was wearing was called space-dye vest...the song i think is a battle inside moore, part of him thinks its love, another part thinks its obbsession..
he later explained that he said fell in love metaphoricly, and that he just stared at the model and developed strong feeling that faded in some seconds,a result of his relationship ending and him having more to give...
I agree, but a while back I found a demo of this song with Kevin as the only performer, doing the vocals and keys along with a drum machine, and I think Kevin actually sounds better in that version. Not to downplay James' talent any, but it was amazing.
perhaps it could be seen as a good thing, by the sounds of it your a big prog fan and would have the same prob i do when introducing it to friends who struggle to appreciate and understand what they are listening to. i believe the new album is very rewarding listen and if it can capture the hearts of new generation and impact on their life the way prog does. The world will be better off and filled with more purist musicians.
a long ago (1998) a friend and i skidded of in a car thru a "small" cliff we lay Unconscious for awhile somehow the stereo was still on and this song came up as the waves crashed on the car it was one of the most surreal moments of my life ( we were hanging upside down uninjured inside a jeep) the surfboards were crashed and beer cans were moved by the onrushing waters, we were alive and the stereo just "died" after this song ...
This is about KM btw. Chromakey . com has everything - try "you go now" tracks 1 & 8 and "dead air for radios" tracks 1 & 7(another great piano intro). O.S.I. - search youtube for "osi helicopter" and there are more links (bigger wave, and the go, and head). Chromakey is trance/ambient with a side of rock. OSI is prog metal.
I imagine an empty mansion, only filled with covered furniture. the only thing which isn't covered is a large painting in the middle of a large room. :)
Well it's a pure Moore song (he wrote most of it) and DT guys don't wanna play it if Kevin is not playing it. I think It would be cool to hear it live...
the song is by dream theater...ok, kevin wrote it , but he was a part of dt back then...it is on an album called awake by dream theater, not kevin moore...this discussion is stupid anyway, just enjoy the song damnit!
One of my favourite songs. The point at around 4:33 where the long power chord preludes the build up to the ending is damn powerful. Video doesn't do it for me though. Song, IMHO, is about someone (Kevin) building emotional walls and losing their highs and lows. Video captures the lonliness, but not that.
Lovely and bueatiful and just totally awesome anyone know where i can get the music for the keyboard part at all? my and a couple of mates anna play this for a school concert
So so true. Whilst Images and Words I believe to be the pinnacle of music, they have developed, and have produced masterpieces spanning twenty years. I must say I was slightly disappointed by Systematic Chaos, but I have every faith in them.
yes but I also like to think of a band as an entity of itself, which like the human entity has the ability to change and morph over time. I mean how boring would it be if they made 26 albums of stuff that all sounded the same and they never evolved? Some people dig their old stuff, some people prefer their newer stuff, and some, like me, enjoy all of it because it's all so damn awesome. :D
Yes, the fact that Dream Theater are such big fans amazes me, becuase they are so much more innovative and skilled. I think that SC was very poor lyrically, as there was no depth or beauty like there usually is. But every band has a blip, and if that's their's, then things are looking good. There were a few gems - Repentance was my favourite. Plus, LaBrie IS getting there. He's done so well, he's done everyone proud, and whilst from 92 to 94 he was the best he'll ever be, he'll get back.
"2001: A Space Odyssey" is a shame, I cant believe so many people like it so much. The first 15 minutes is just a small group of monkey's and a rock.. rofl. This song tho, is just brilliant. I love DT. :)
kevin moore is a great keyboardist but i think jordan rudess is more rocking. but with kevin moore, most of the songs are memorable. like this song. very sweet and lonelt but i love it :D GOOD MOVIE MAN
It's about the Keyboarder falling in love with a girl he sees in a fashion catalogue and thus realising that he's not really over his last girlfriend (or something like that). Has nothing to do with women's rights
There's no one to take my blame if they wanted to There's nothing to keep me sane and it's all the same to you There's nowhere to set my aim so I'm everywhere Never come near me again do you really think I need you?
It's astounding to think that a band like Dream Theater, who does all the insane licks they do, could do something as beautiful as this(not putting them down).
It just shows how versatile they are. Bands now should strive to be like Dream Theater.
the most badass thing you can do is sit in a dark room alone while smoking a cigar and listening to this song.
I'm a huge DT fan, and this is the first time I've heard this song, but DAMN is it sweet. Awesome vid too.
stanley's kiubrick masterpiece along with one of the most sentimental songs ever
God bless you both Stanley and Moore
THANX FOR THE MEMORIES
One of my favourite songs, mixed with one of my favourite movies... good job man!
Not wanting to argue, but in the presence of enemies is one of the most epic works by Dream Theater.

Yes this is definately one of those songs that can send you down an emotional rabbit hole that some may not be able to handle.
nice music, and the video fits well...there's some kinf of a deep, strange feeling that reach us while looking at images of the dark, vast cosmos, and I think that it matches well with this song.

this video fits perfectly, maybe not to the lyrics, but it fits perfectly to the feel that the music creates
Kubrick's masterpiece combined with DT's music....AWESOME!
I agree, friend. The case with me is, I liked their heavier stuff from Train of Thought, but here I am listening to their calmer, older works!
very good job... you crystalized the vastness of space with the concept of humanity and consciousness...one of the best Kubrick movies and this great song!!! Do something similar with the great gig in the sky please!!!

my love for this song is indescribable
amazing, it fits with the song so perfect, coulodnt've thought of anything more fitting, beautiful song, GREAT JOB!!!
Good video and great song! My second fave song off of Awake. Lifting Shadow Off A Dream is my fave.
I can truly relate to this song. It brings tears to my eyes.
awesome song, first time i hear them and this song is just perfect
this song really stands out as different for DT. I like it a lot but compared to their other stuff its really unusual.

You did a great job on this video for my favorite song by Dream Theater. It rocks!!!!!
this clip is awesome. it fits completely with the music (perhaps not the lyrics) but still epic
It is a fantastic song, but that is a classic quote. Thumbs up for Wyatthateshumantails.
The piano sounds GREAT!
its bout a model moore saw in a magazine i think...the outfit she was wearing was called space-dye vest...the song i think is a battle inside moore, part of him thinks its love, another part thinks its obbsession..
One of my favorites of DT!!
he later explained that he said fell in love metaphoricly, and that he just stared at the model and developed strong feeling that faded in some seconds,a result of his relationship ending and him having more to give...
Amazing video, congratulations, one of the few videos I rate with a 5-Star. Good work bro!
I agree, but a while back I found a demo of this song with Kevin as the only performer, doing the vocals and keys along with a drum machine, and I think Kevin actually sounds better in that version. Not to downplay James' talent any, but it was amazing.
Beautiful, just breathtaking
great job on the video amazing song too one of the saddest songs I know very effective emotionally
Wow! This song makes my heart act funny. Love it!
2001: A Space Odyssey.....amazing film, amazing song...
really sad and beautiful song! awesome vid!
perhaps it could be seen as a good thing, by the sounds of it your a big prog fan and would have the same prob i do when introducing it to friends who struggle to appreciate and understand what they are listening to. i believe the new album is very rewarding listen and if it can capture the hearts of new generation and impact on their life the way prog does. video awsome, man, and the song is very beautiful...good job
It's about Kevin Moore who saw a girl on an advertisement magazine. Probably includes a lot of other things though >.> Space-Dye Vest was the product.
my fav band and director =D
what can I say about this song?
the atmosphere, the lyrics, everything....
one of their best songs
this song sends shivers to my spine
nicely done. fits the song quite well.
They didn't reject the song, they just don't play it live since Kevin left the band and this is his song.
this song is a masterpiece
So atmospheric and dark. Moore's solo work must be very interesting. Anyone listened to his albums outside Dream Theater ?
a long ago (1998) a friend and i skidded of in a car thru a "small" cliff we lay Unconscious for awhile somehow the stereo was still on and this song came up as the waves crashed on the car it was one of the most surreal moments of my life ( we were hanging upside down uninjured inside a jeep) the surfboards were crashed and beer cans were moved by the onrushing waters, we were alive and the stereo just "died" after this song ...
Excellent, Cibecco!
As I said... thumbs up for choosing the footage...
i luv luv luv this song
i would luv to play the piano solo
Looove this song!
so ein genialer song- und dann so ein grottiges video dazu, ohne jede aussage, ohne jeden zusammenhang...
enttäuschend
Absolutely Great!!
yeah that line is amazing

*Track #4 in my [Dream Theater Ballads] playlist:*

this is awesome man!!!

this my favorite dream theater song
One of my favourite songs. The point at around 4:33 where the long power chord preludes the build up to the ending is damn powerful. Video doesn't do it for me though. Nice vid. This is a great song.
Lovely and bueatiful and just totally awesome anyone know where i can get the music for the keyboard part at all? my and a couple of mates anna play this for a school concert
Strange. My album is scratched, so the intro has this odd victrola sound to it. Like distorted fuzz buzzing in. It really adds to the ambience of it.
mmmm. yummy. great music, really food for the thought. Dream theater is the bestest band there is, though Kamelot is right up there with them.
This is personally my favorite DT song, aside from panic attack. (that song is Fcking hard on rock band 2).
the day they play this live is the day i can die peacefully!
Stanley Kubrick + Dream Theater. Amazing!
this is the difference between moore and the followers... he's a real musician!
So so true. Whilst Images and Words I believe to be the pinnacle of music, they have developed, and have produced masterpieces spanning twenty years. I must say I was slightly disappointed by Systematic Chaos, but I have every faith in them.
such a song!
yes but I also like to think of a band as an entity of itself, which like the human entity has the ability to change and morph over time. O_O SIMPLY. AMAZING. Well-done!
wonderful video
i can't help thinking that kevin moore was/is the real dt's soul! come back kevin please!

"2001: A Space Odyssey" is a shame, I cant believe so many people like it so much. The first 15 minutes is just a small group of monkey's and a rock.. rofl.
This song tho, is just brilliant. I love DT. :)
El ultimo gran toque de Kevin Moore!
kevin moore is a great keyboardist but i think jordan rudess is more rocking. but with kevin moore, most of the songs are memorable. like this song. very sweet and lonelt but i love it :D GOOD MOVIE MAN
really good song even though jon petruchi doesnt really play dream theater is awsome
great work!
real prog job!;D
great song
the day when Dream Theater play this song live I can die in peace...I know it wont happen though
Yeah reminds me when i was 15. I too had severe depression then.
oo what a beatufull song..
AMAZING
It's about the Keyboarder falling in love with a girl he sees in a fashion catalogue and thus realising that he's not really over his last girlfriend (or something like that). Has nothing to do with women's rights
the new Yes !!
all you people that havn't heard of 'Yes', check them out !!
Stanley Kubrick's epic "2001: a space odyssey"
wow i love song.
ah? you mean:
the only entire song that Kevin Moore (keyboardist) did.
There's no one to take my blame
if they wanted to
There's nothing to keep me sane
and it's all the same to you
There's nowhere to set my aim
so I'm everywhere
Never come near me again
do you really think I need you?
