      I think they do it also with non native speaker because it is even more difficult to recognize the language when it is not well pronounced.
      Or it could just be because they didn't find native speakers for some languages...

      It's easy to hear those words when you already know it's that language because the video said so... it's another thing to have to guess. You can think you hear a certain word, but in reality, it was something else in another language, or it's a word that is common cross-linguistically and you can't rely on it. I'm sure quite a few languages could have an instance of something sounding like "suomi" and it not being Finnish at all (because of the (C)V syllable structure that is very common in languages). "suomi" is a clue, sure, but personally, I wouldn't rely on that word alone; I would also rely on phonetics and syllable structure (double consonants, double vowels, presence of /y/ and ö, /h/ at the end of syllables, etc. are a lot more reliable to me). As for "Vietnam", it is pretty common cross-linguistically, and the person could have been saying "Vietnam", yet actually speaking another language than Vietnamese, maybe to try to mislead the guy. I could say "J'ai des amis qui viennent du Vietnam"; that doesn't mean it's Vietnamese and not French. You have to rely on how the rest of the language sounds in any case.
      And I think по-русский sounds like how it would sound in other Slavic languages, but for that one, I'm not entirely sure.
      So yeah, those words are clues, but I wouldn't call them "dead giveaway".

      @@violence8550 . I'm fluent in English and Spanish. Native fluent in both. Now I'm learning Italian. Its only been about 1.5 months since I started learning Italian but I can already understand a lot watching Italian films. I can put together many sentences with proper grammar as well but I'm not conversational yet. I'm hoping to be at an intermediate or conversational level within 2-3 more months. Then I'll start learning another language (undecided which). You?

    • @violence8550
      @violence8550 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MrSupernova111 I'm fluent in English and Greek (my native tongue). I've been teaching myself Spanish for around one year and a half and I am at a pretty good level of apprehension. The grammar is similar to the Greek one so it's easy for me. The languages I've just started are Russian, German, Chinese, Korean and Arabic. They're intensely challenging and I'm at a very low level, but I love all of them and with everyday practice progress will come naturally.

    • @MrSupernova111
      @MrSupernova111 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@violence8550 . That's very cool! Its interesting that Greek has similar grammar to Spanish. Then you would learn Italian easily once you know Spanish. I grew up with both Spanish and English which is why I speak both fluently. I'm hispanic and lived in Texas most of my life. The other languages that I'm considering are Russian and Chinese but its intimidating as they are completely different than romance languages. An alternative would be to learn French which would be a lot easier but I never cared too much about it - same with Portuguese. Maybe I'll try Japanese. Overall, I would like to be conversational in 4-5 languages and know some basic phrases to get around in a few others. Ideally, I want to use my new linguistic skills to travel the world and meet people from all over. I can't imagine visiting Italy for example to just look at stuff.

    This dude is insane. The mandarin one can be quite tricky because the speaker was speaking with a thick Taiwanese accent. Tim nailed it by quickly switching from his Beijing accent (he mentioned that his chinese teacher is from Beijing) to a taiwanese ish accent. He is perfectly aware of the subtle differences across accents..I am from Beijing and I am shocked! 太厉害了!

    I'm aware the pronunciation for non-arabs is quite challenging. However, the guy reciting verses of the Quran needs to work on his understanding and not only pronunciation. The first word means "evening", as Tim said, (("By the time" can be a more precise translation in light of the context)), and it's easily distinguishable from the other word meaning "siege". Additionally, he confirmed to Tim that the word "Salehat" meant :prayer (=Salat). In fact, it meant "good deeds". The list goes on: "Tawasso" has nothing to do with equality in rights but rather advicing acts. By the way, I'm not even muslim :D Not sure if many of you know about Arab world christians

    Guessed all of them pretty much immediately, except the first one, never even heard of it..!? :D I was lucky though, since they happened to only have languages to which I have been exposed. Finnish was too easy, since I'm Swedish and it's a neighbouring country, but that's really impressive for him to guess. The question he correctly posed himself is if it could be another Baltic language, which is difficult to distinguish unless you have heard lots of one of the languages. Portuguese totally sounds like a Russian speaking Spanish, completely agree :) Ukrainian and Russian were easy since my wife is Ukrainian and speaks both. My Russian is def much more advanced than his but then again, I don't speak lord knows how many other languages he does :D
    The only tricky one was the Yugoslavian one, for the reasons he explained. He also mentioned "Slovenian" but that is actually not too similar. Serbian and Croatian are practically the same with very small differences. The Bosnian dialect is pretty much the same too but a bit more noticeable with the Islamic influence. He should have asked what the words for "bread", and "soup" (bread is "hleb" in Serbian and Bosnian and "kruh" in Croatian, soup is "supa" in Serbian but "juha" in Croatian, quite distinct) are and "two coffee", since the genitive case of "two" and "coffee" differ between the languages. Love how he was culturally aware enough to know to ask for "marhaba", i.e. the Islamic influence on Bosnian, great detective work! Generally, I would have gone with Bosnia anyway since they emigrated a lot during the war since they suffered so greatly, it seems more likely to find one living in other countries.

    Tim is a freak of nature and a genius, but some of these languages weren't that hard to guess for many folks with a passing interest in languages. I speak no Arabic at all but could immediately detect the distinctive sound. Of course, Tim not only detected it as Arabic from the Koran but even translated it. Same thing with the Slavic languages - I could have identified all three Slavic languages as Slavic and also identified the Russian as Russian (I have a very basic know;ledge of Russian). Portuguese was a dead giveaway, most people could have correctly identified Japanese and Chinese too just from the sounds - though not the dialects - but Vietnamese? no - that would have been impossible for me. Of course, there were some languages most folks not from that region would never have been able to identify - like the West African ones. Even the Pashto, Farsi etc. - I might have vaguely guessed middle Eastern but that's about it. Indonesian, Finnish and some others - no chance,
