Andrew has always been one the greatest unknown bass players in the world- one of those "effortless like breathing" players who, if they are in your band, make you sound gold every time
Son Volt - still as sublime and melodic as ever, beautifully crafted songs played with touching sensitivity and absolute perfection. Simply beautiful. American culture at its finest....
after a triumphant show at First Ave in Minneapolis, circa 1999, the band left the stage in the usual fashion, but our hero Jay walked straight forward and left the stage via the 15+ people who were the audience. It was very cool. His girlfriend greeted him and they went to the bar. I did likewise, and for the next 2 hours, I discussed music and culture with Jay Farrar. He was absolutely the coolest, most laid back guy you would ever dream. He told me about the tracking of wide swing tremelo, and other minutiae. Great live band. Not many bands stack up to these guys in their 90’s prime.
That's awesome. I'd love meet Jay but I get the feeling that he'd prefer to be left alone - or maybe that's just me projecting. Either way, his music has helped shape my life since I was 18 years old. My world is a better place due to him, J Mascis, and Jason Isbell. My favorite Js.
Also , if you haven't.. check out Uncle Tupelo and Jay Farrar solo stuff. Just as good. Music that just feels right and it hits you... really hard to explain.
A couple years back I saw an old friend from high school. I was living in Golden for the last 25 27 years anyway he came out to Red Rocks and we were talking and he said well what are you into these days musically the first band I mentioned was Son Volt and of course Wilco and he said wow because he turned me on to Old Jazz like 40s 50s and earlier anyway rest in peace John Springer I always loved you
I absolutely love Tupelo, Wilco, and Son Volt ... and I have since around when Anodyne dropped. I know every word to every Uncle Tupelo album, no joke. Jay (and Jeff) are two of the greatest American songwriters of the past ... shit... going on 30 years now. But am I only who would like to hear Jay ... just ONCE IN A WHILE ... sing a song with a LITTLE bit different style? I mean, it's literally like he's sung every song he's written in almost exactly the same way ... nearly the same key, and same phrasing ... this entire 30 years. How about just a LITTLE variety once in a while, Mr. Jay? Is that asking too much? Anyways, this still sounds great, don't get me wrong, and I still think Jay's a minor diety, to be clear.
I think thats the riff...in the band...they are both great individually and know it and dont want to admit that the others style is as good as their own or that they are even better together...but seriously that riff was 25 years ago
Pretty funny, pretty insightful, and pretty true. Something tells me his voice is comfortable in the D-E range and if you expect him to change now after 30 years,, well........that said, I'm thankful we still have this great band around and I'll take whatever I can get!? Sounds like 1996, but for now sounds like Heaven! ✌️💖
Can anyone tell me the exact lineup featured here - I am pretty sure it was the same as we saw down here in Auckland, New Zealand a couple of weeks back. Well worth the wait, they are awesome live!
If I had a vote on the most overrated artist in history…. I would vote the obvious answer, George Thorogood, of course. But Jay would run a very, very close second.
This lineup is tremendous, the new songs are great, and Jay's voice remains a force of nature. Son Volt is alive and very well!
i disagree. it's a very good game, but i think donkey kong is the best game ever.
The music for driving an old truck. The music for an introspective soul. The music thatll be there with you along the journey

You are so lucky
That's awesome. I'd love meet Jay but I get the feeling that he'd prefer to be left alone - or maybe that's just me projecting. Either way, his music has helped shape my life since I was 18 years old. My world is a better place due to him, J Mascis, and Jason Isbell. My favorite Js.
Current line up of the band is brilliant. Hope it's captured on a live DVD. In the meantime, I'll watch this session over and over. Marvellous.
Just discovered this band. They're awesome.

Good sound.
Lead guitarist has killer tone in each of the three he played. 👍
I just love the sound he gets on Back Against The Wall.
Saw them on this tour. Was fantastic! One of my favorite bands of all time. Best vocals in the business in my opinion.
Jay farrar is the best. One of my favorite songwriters of all time
He’s true Americana
Sounding as good as ever, please come to UK!
Just saw them at the corner hotel Melbourne, hands down one of the best shows i've ever been to.
Love the fact that Jay doesn't want to interview. Let the music speak for itself.
There is something about the melancholy of Jay Farrar’s songs that grab you and pull you in.
Listening to WST this morning made cry those 'good tears'. Thank you SV. This is great also. Voice is butter.
That's one helluva great band!!
Magical stuff I love this band
My favourite band!

That first song is just beautiful

Love this band. Farrar is one of my favourite songwriters.
Shoot! I just discovered these, too. Well, ai guess it’s never too late. Already my favourite in the genre.
They kind of created the genre, so yes.
Great set……I watch repeatedly great sound and camera work
Really good album.
My Favorite Band from 1996
I feel like I'm 20 again at Friday's South in Belleville. It feels awesome.
1st heard Son Volt on WNKU, who like others, we lost to the bible thumpers. Thankful you are still with us KEXP & for the amazing music you share.❤️🎸
Absolutely amazing as usual! 👏👏👏
GREAT performance!!!
Great stuff! Killer band!!!
No tour dates in Canada? Come back to Edmonton, AB Son Volt - we miss you.
The only one all-the-way true and good alt. country / americana band.
Preach
Aw that riff at 12:44 so sweet.
I think it was a quick solo
Sweet!
Love lyrics
So so good!
love this
Greatness
awesome band
Jay Farrar is my favorite musician of all time, but the man has the charisma of a radish. Jesus.
I love radishes.
I'm gonna steal that line.
They killed it at 1st Ave....
Going to see them in Levon Helm’s barn! Woohoo!
Great!
Oh how nice it would be if Uncle Tupelo would reunite for a few shows.
Damn........again - so underrated is Jay and SonVolt in the overall music world. This era's Neil Young.
so influential
Aqui do Brasil curtindo demais!!! Great!!!
Can anyone tell me the exact lineup featured here - I am pretty sure it was the same as we saw down here in Auckland, New Zealand a couple of weeks back. Well worth the wait, they are awesome live!
Jay, Mark Spencer on keys, Andrew Duplantis on bass, Chris Frame on lead, not sure on drums
Not sure is the name of the drummer in my band too!
Bill Murray on drums
It's Son Volt...where y'all been the past 20 or so years?
So many bands, so little time. At least we made it here.
They've been here the whole time. Glad you came back to them. We've been waiting here for you.
Voice sounds reminiscent of Gene Clark - which is no bad thing
Who is in the band these days? What happened to the Boquists?
the mighty Bonanzinga
They are air tight. It all starts with the drummer.
Why is this good to me? Im mexican and my parents always put latino music . not a fan tho only classic rock for me and whatever this is.
Not unlike Canned Heat (on their better days) in parts too (also good)
Overdue
"How much more black?" Looks like Mark missed the memo re: ensemble.
Who the hell disliked this? Someone with sh*t taste in music, I guess. That band was on fire, and Jay is always awesome.
I’ve seen them 6 times and met Jay 4 times just keeps it real down to earth no rock star ego. Been a fan since 1996.
better with age
Jesus is a primer.
Eh ben ! On est loin d’uncle Tupelo ! Sérieux ça craint, y’a plus rien de rien.
rebel girl , maga
suggs, i wish you would have forced him to mic that acoustic i hate DI acoustic.. :(
Some of this particularly falls on Mark Spence...er.
first you get the bands name wrong then you don't interview the great man and his great band after songs? :(
He requested no interview, but we thought you all might enjoy the free music anyway.
KEXP you better beleive it :)) thanks very much for all the amazing stuff you bring us
This band kinda sounds like Wilco!
Jay Farrar (Son Volt) and Jeff Tweedy (Wilco) originally played together in Uncle Tupelo. The split formed Wilco.
This shit is depressing as hell.
If I had a vote on the most overrated artist in history…. I would vote the obvious answer, George Thorogood, of course. But Jay would run a very, very close second.
You folks in Europa and Beyond. Take notice to true Anericaba "Roots musica"!💞 Son Volt Migos star mucho🧡
That's really to say Blues, Jazz, etc. is americana. Jay is Country, Blues, pure Americana! Am I correct Professor John?
RIP my Brother.
Woody would be proud of Jay!!!
