American culture at its finest...an absolutely sublime performance. A perfect melding of melody, instruments played with subtlety and emotion, harmonised vocals and haunting yet inspired lyrics. Pure, pure magic...I had the pleasure to watch them live at Dingwalls in London, in 1997, a fabulous band.
I’m listening to these guys now in the tail end of 2022 and they are still one of my favourite bands ever. I love Tear Stained Eye and honestly listen to it on a collection of songs that I downloaded about ten years ago every single night for perhaps twenty years now to keep my tinnitus from driving me insane. The band and their music has definitely kept me from going more crazy than I deserve to be so thanks!!
CNN's Anderson Cooper brought me here. He just played a tribute to his friend and colleague Faith Kleppinger (1971-2021) a writer for CNN, whom died of cancer. In the bit he described how she and a friend would text one another about song lyrics. They texted about this song, Faith described the lyrics as "devastating". Then the song played at the end as a photo tribute rolled on with Faith and the people in her life. I Googled the song and here I am..Wow, what a nice pleasant song, thank you Faith & Anderson! R.I.P Faith...
@CJ's Outdoors - Yup, I saw that tribute also & why I'm here. Yeah, that really was so sad watching him struggle to keep his composure & get through it. A helluva lot more magic than Wilco... and I like Wilco. That said, I still LOVE Son Volt, thirty years later. Uncle Tupelo's "No Depression" was a goddamn gem, but I think "Trace" is even better. Granted, I know that record back to front, every note, without trying.

I think he was, but he isn't now. When I hear a song like "Jet Pilot", I think juvenile, not sophisticated. I'm not cherry picking, either. I think he still has his moments, but from 1991 through Wide Swing Tremolo and his solo records (Gob Iron, too), he still had it. I just don't think his writing is all that compelling anymore.

Back in Octoberr 1996 I was in the Marines, deployed to 7th comm battalion, in Okinawa Japan. It was there that I became friends with another Marine named Matt Gajewski. In December we started hanging out, singing and playing guitars. One of the songs he introduced me to was this beautiful song. Now Matt left 7th comm in Jan 1997 and I did the same in October 1997. But the memories I have will last forever.
My younger brother died at 50 due to cancer, but he loved bands like this, and loved the fact that a reviewer said that this is "tears in your beers music."
Made a Son Volt radio station on Pandora. The algorithm pairs them along with Uncle Tupelo or Wilco and occasionally pivots to songwriters like John Prine and even occasional past greats like REM , Neil Young and the Stones. With Son Volt and songs like Tear Stained Eye as the core, it's soooo good. Maybe all time fav.

Why bring such antagonism in to this? People can like whatever goddamned music they like. They don't need you to validate their musical choices.
