What is Mid-Side Processing? How can you use Mid-Side in your Eurorack musical endeavors? In this video I'll show you how. Using the Worng LRMSMSLR module I provide some interesting patch examples of Mid-Side in action.
HEADPHONES OR A SET OF QUALITY AUDIO MONITORS ARE REQUIRED to hear the full effect of Mid-Side processing of stereo audio. My sound source today is a Roland Alpha Juno-1 w/ the chorus turned on. Remember, if the chorus is turned off, the synth only provides a monaural signal which is no bueno for Mid-Side processing. The Roland VP-03 Boutique Vocoder also provides an interesting ensemble choir sound that is useful.
Audio was recorded direct to Tascam DR-05 through a Mackie Mixer. No other effects were added to the sound other than the modules explained in this demo.
Other modules used in this video:
    - Pittsburgh Synthesizer Box, MIDI3 module (clock)
    - Pittsburgh Mix Mult (attenuators), Toolbox (S&H), Outs
    - 4MS Rotating Clock Divider RCD
    - Doepfer A-106-5 SEM Filter

still watching 5 years later! really great demo and SO satisfying -- I've "heard" this on recordings for years but never knew how anyone achieved it.

This has been incredibly helpful for me in understanding mid/ side processing. Thank you.

Thanks a lot for this video, I just built two of these module and I must say I was struggling a bit to understand how it's supposed to work...

Right! I was thinking that, too when I got it. But I heard Worng's demo getting amazing panorama out of this thing and I was HOOKED. Hope my explanation helped as well.

I turned this on for some random modular chatter as I sent myself on the journey to sleep, in search of the Holy Bed... Grail. And instead I just tripped out on my zolpidem and went down the wrong path... your path... the path of wisdom and fraggles. I saw things, man. Toy cars with french toast drives, and a large man going NAR NAR NAR quite menacingly indeed.

Very organic staccato toward the end, reminded me of Aphex Twin's "Come To Daddy" EP. Cool!

Can you still split into mid-side if you just put in a mono signal? Or maybe a duplicate of the mono signal into the L and R?

Mid-side processing compares the differences in phase between the two inputs. Similarities go to the mid, other goes to side. There are tricks to convert a mono signal to stereo. Delay, stereo reverb, and other kinds of fx. A simple inversion of the mono signal may not work, since it's likely to distribute everything to side and nothing to mid.

the idea is nice, just when you play thin in mono, the complete stereo part is gone..... and 60% of the club PAs are still just mono.... ;-)

what module is that (the red one) that splits the field into L R and Mid?

That's the Worng LRMSMSLR module. Requires sourcing available parts and soldering, but it's pretty easy for a second or third build.

WORNG sells assembled modules through some retailers if you don't do DIY :)
