Lyrics
River splashes against the rocks
And I scale a slope, I hope the tracks won't
Lead me down to dark black pits
Or places where we fall to bits
If she were there I'd hold her down
I'll push her under while she drowns
And couldn't breathe and call for air
She doesn't care for my despair
Or is it me?
Or the one that's wrong
You see it in the sea
River Cool's where I belong
In my Mersey paradise
As I stare an oil wheel comes
Sailing by, and I feel like
Growing fins and falling in
With the bricks, the bikes, the rusty tin
I'll swim along without a care
I'm eating sand when I need air
You can bet your life I'll meet a pike
Who'll wolf me down for tea tonight
I want to be (I want to be)
Where the drownings are (drownings are)
You see it in the sea
River Cool's where I belong
In my Mersey paradise
I want to be (I want to be)
Where the drownings are (drownings are)
You see it in the sea
River Cool's where I belong
Oh, yeah
I want to be (I want to be)
Where the drownings are (drownings are)
You see it in the sea
River Cool's where I belong
In my Mersey paradise - เพลง
Keith Moon smiled in heaven every time this guy sat down behind a set of traps. This mix has Reni's backing vocals too low. What a hook this song has. Anyone whose heart doesn't beat faster when they hear that riff is missing something from their soul.
Fucking classs.......💙💙
Holy crap Ians in tune!
Still beguiles me the miracle that is the first record. i always wonder whether it took 68 days to record as john leckie had to use the few moments Ian was in tune. I'm a weed smoker and my singing voice always sounds dreadful the day after. but i guess the magic is that none of it matters. for that halcyon period between 1987-90, that feeling of coming into the sun... that is something i'll always treasure.
Lol
'She doesn't care for my despair' - transcendent
Reni has the voice of an angel and his mic isn't even turned on
Love this song.....makes me think of my first love who got me into the Stone Roses. Bittersweet memories.
He had great taste, you and the Stone Roses 🌹
funny to think about love when this song's about murdering a girl lol
It's such a shame you can't really hear Reni's vocals in this song, their harmonies on the album version are just so beautiful. But John's guitar definitely makes up for it.
quite simply the greatest song ever written ,
Haha... It is brilliant isn't it. Its definitely swirling around my top 5 songs ever... They always change
The best band in the world for a short period in time. Truly beautiful 😍
Geezer on side of stage is loving life
can't see his face properly but it's probably Cressa.
Or Karl Pilkington.
Had the gig on VHS played to death back in the day brilliant brilliant gig
effortless beauty... even with Ian's pitch imperfect singing!
does anyone want to tell 'em...?
Reni! John! Mani! Ian! Love, love, love this amazing band. Fantastic.
Great song always been a favourite of mine 👌🏻🍋
Spike Island gave me a passion for this masterpiece, now I’m an addict, she doesn’t care for my despair❤️
Another classic completely underated Song from the S.T. they'll look back on this in 300 years and wonder about the divide in Mancpool and Livchester !
I had a shit week last week, had a shit day yesterday and was on course for having a shit day today...Until I heard the announcement that the Roses were back. That made my day, week, month, year, decade, century, millennium etc.
Much love the Roses.
I can play this :)) what a beauty of a song, Wish I had Squire's sounds tho.
Just reading all these old comments. I didn’t know what the song was about, but why was everyone so hung up about it? I know the Roses are from Manchester but they loved and played loads of gigs in Liverpool, including one of their first ever gigs before they were famous. I love the line ‘river cool’s where I belong’.
at 0:45 you can see the song list in the background
So sad the lyrics of this song amazing performance sounds just like the album ❤
I read somewhere once that these lyrics are actually about how Thatcherism systematically destroyed social welfare systems and made thousands on Merseyside and the surrounding areas lose their jobs during the 80's. Ian sings about "Putting her head under till she drowns" and she "doesn't care for my (our) despair. But that's just one theory :)
Nottalot1
There are many theories on the meaning of this song, and many disputes on the lyrics themselves.
that's just some left-wing "interpretation", boring and unoriginal. Its about despair and intentional drowning..
@@kylehill6384 Boring and unoriginal. But 100% true
This song is just awsome
This tune reminds me of my youth!
Love the solo
Another great song.
An incredible band
amazing
greatest roses song.
I really like it ...
I'm glad this autoplayed after All For One, which isn't bad, but this is so much better. Hopefully A41 is just the fluff pop single ahead of a good album.
You saying All for One is good? I'm a proper Roses fan, but that song is terrible.... For a Roses song. If it was someone else, I'd say it was poor, but they let their standards drop massively on the 2 last singles. Hard to say, as a fan, but they wer awful
How daft are you all, the Mersey runs through Manchester just as much as Liverpool, why would Manchester's greatest ever band sing about Liverpool?
maybe because this is a nice remake of a famous song by a famous liverpudlian band ? just saying ...
@Paul Daniels They arent singing about Liverpool. Theyre singing about the river.
nothing on the smiths my friend
@@danielpreston94 IMO they Stone Roses are better than the smiths. But both shit all over Oasis.
+Carpe Diem River Cool= Liverpool. Got it?
SR great song eternal
The song is about a drowning(deliberate) that happened in the Mersey River near Brown's home in Warrington when he was a lad. (Piss take of Liverpool? NO!)
+Sig Doherty Yeah, somehow it always comes down to an argument between Scousers and Mancs when the song is actually about the area inbetween. I suppose we're like the taint; at least, thats what Widnes (and Warrington on a bad day) smells like to me...
+Fortramnasdaq Goddammit, it's Runcorn that stinks.
The greatest song ever??
of course i like this song!
Why does everyone think that he's says "Liverpool's where I belong"? He says River Cool's
maybe because this is a nice remake of a famous song by a famous liverpudlian band ? just saying ...
And what song would that be then?
Tim Coe - myUSP
ever heard of "here comes the sun" ? well maybe not an exact remake but ...
User Mister certainly hear the similarity but not major enough to call a copy
let's call it a "more than vaguely inspired by" ... just like "thorn in my side" by eurythmics
Dublin, 5 July 2012! Bring it on!
come on dublin yeeeeeah
there back
gotta love cressa
History
"Having read the definitive book on the Roses by John Robb: Mersey Paradise is Ian Brown's reflection on a childhood incident. The Mersey flowed near where he grew up and there was a drowning murder in the area, apparently by a man killing a woman over unrequited love. Brown seems to be putting himself in the place of the murdered "If she were here I'd hold her down, push her under while she drowns". I would also think a boat passed and was witness to the murder so he wanted to jump in and grow fins to escape..."
I've also heard a rumour it's another anti royalist song. Apparently the royal family had a ship docked in Liverpool during WWII waiting to take them to America and leave us all to it if things didn't work out against the Germans. Perhaps this line alludes to the queen:
"If she were there I'd hold her down,
I'd push her under while she drowns
And couldn't breathe and claw for air-
She doesn't care for my despair"
Or it could be just as simple as this: "I'm from liverpool and agree that its a piss take. But i think its a brilliant pastiche of sun-drenched beachboysy pop, but rather than about california its about a the scruffy countryside fringing the mersey between Manchester and Liverpool where the roses used to play as kids. I used to play there and the song fits it perfectly".
Mani once said it's all the shit drains from Manchester to Liverpool 😎
And killing Margaret Thatcher😍
They ain't no Mersey paradise
@Robcatist @stoneroseslive4ever I don't think Ian Brown will be a weak link. He can still get a crowd like no other, even if his voice isn't what it once was. Ian Brown - genius.
青春!!!!
fuckin beautiful TIMELESS
Reminds me of a weekend in Wales with the famous/infamous Nicholas Frost
Them introtunes is how I imagine the pearly gates
Ian sounds great here
Like most great music of any genre, it’s possible to interpret it in more than one way.
This is true of great art in general
Still there is only one Merseyside. #SpreadLoves
Too right lad!
come on you toffeeeesss eveeerton
@@remusedhardt44 Hahaha 🤣
@Sufcman He's Johns guitar tech, add extra effects and volume and stuff onto his solo's...and pull some shifty moves of course !
Makes to wanna born in uk
Shoot Me Down, but this is my favourite Roses song
Mine too but Waterfall a close 2nd. What d'ya think?
mine is wonderwall
@floron1963 Yep. The happiest anyway : )
Alan Wren
Anyone else feel that this sounds similar to sally cinnamon
Is this the best Merseybeat song ever? Bigger than the Beatles?
Reni's fantastic backing vocals are turned down below audibility on this track. tfb
Who's that guy on 1:45 ? Love the way that he's chilling just dancing along
Ian Brown?
The guy on side of the stage is DJ Cressa
Cressa.
how much drugs is the guy on the side of the stage on lololol

I want to be...
@StoneRosesLive4Ever Browns gonna be the weak link in the live shows this year, i just hope he pulls it off cause you know Squire, Reni and Mani will be as good as they ever were!
The opening chords are those from the Beatles :)
Dan J which song?
Joe Harrison Here comes the sun
Its the same chords throughout the whole song
You do know that this song takes the piss out of Liverpool right?
no it doesn't
How u work that out? Its not taking the piss out of Liverpool, its pointing out hardships in most big cities just so happens Liverpool was the setting in this song.... Now im a Manc and proud and love a bit of banter with scousers but lets not be c**ks eh!
Am I wrong, or is this song meant to be a piss take of Mersey-beat/ Liverpool in general?
Either way it's still a great song.
you are wrong
That drummer ain't half bad.
our lad's surely on an E. the vigour of his sway ain't the music play. know what i say?
TACK SAID FÖR ATT DU VISAEDE MIG DENNAXDDDDDDDD
hhaahaha vaaaaa du så snygg
kinda heartbreaking to see the band play so well and Ian can't hold a tune. Drugs ey.
ŕìvèŕ çòòĺ
@liam Egan
it literally says "liverpool is where i belong"
+ the smiths are manchesters greatest ever band..
River cools where I belong
Ian Brown was born in Warrington, England. Which is on the banks of the River Mersey, 20 miles west from Manchester and 20 miles east of Liverpool. He must've lived close to the River Mersey as a child so this song could mean something to him and even then the rest of the band were from Manchester. And including the Stone Roses, Oasis are the best Manchester band IMO, but the Roses are a bees dick away from them in terms of quality, Oasis just edge it for me
Andrew Bateman good interpretation, but Ian's mocking Liverpool not supporting it, that's what makes the song even more perfect.
+craigster2001 Same thing.
no it doesn't say "liverpools where I belong" it's River Cool
must be damp for you
I had this DVD, than I gave it to one important person to me back in the day. Then we broke up. I'm still sad, not because the relationship but because of the DVD I don't have now
