A wonderful home made τζουράς (Tsouras). I bet those who put the thumbs down had no idea what it was and assumed you were trying to make another instrument (Dulcimer, Dombra, Banjo , etc) and so were unprepared for the sound and thought it a failure. Whereas those of us who know Greek music and love the sound of the Tsouras (and the Bouzouki family in general) can recognise your achievement here. Thumbs Up!
I had no idea what it was, but it sounded familiar. My grandmother has a few greek songs on a cd, and I was fascinated by the sound each time I would hear it, and now I know what it is too, a Tsouras. I have always liked instruments that aren't "the norm" (instruments I don't hear in my day to day life) and I want to know, what's your favorite instrument in this famely of string instruments?
Fantastic video, I am hopeless with music myself, but I really love musical instruments, their construction and watching them being played. Cheers, Jim.
Great build! So many iterations possible - skillet mandolin, banjo, ukelele, scale it up to a mandolincello, any number of African or Asian instruments. I greatly appreciate that it's acoustic. Thanks for the clear and complete video!
A well made video. You didn't waste anybody's time with that. Good job on the instrument, too. I made a shorty 5 string banjo once, using maple for the one piece neck, no truss and no separate fretboard. That was before internet so sorry, no youtube for that. After a couple of years I gave it to a shop/museum in Baltimore, probably still up on the wall there. I had made the 4th fret distance just slightly off somehow and it irritated me greatly, though it didn't seem to bother anyone else.
I have to admit, at first I thought...I'll hit the fast forward button a lot on this one. But I couldn't! I had to watch every minute! That's incredible craftsmanship! Seriously! Really nice work!
Excellent !! not a single second wasted. I learned the way it has to be presented to viewers. just EXCELLENT from beginning to the end !! Thank you for sharing. Subscribed.
Terrific build! I just finished making an Acoustic guitar from scratch, so I know what goes into making an instrument. You did a bang up job & I love the way it plays......................
I am just in the middle of building my own Cigar Box Guitar at the moment, but if I hadn't watched your videos I would have never even of tried. Thanks for the inspiration and your videos. T,A
Thank you very much. The tailpiece kind of resembles with the ones we use in Bouzoukis (Greeks traditional instrument) I kind of borrowed the ides from there! Merry Christmas
I have NO talent for guitars but I have lots of talent for the piano and I wood(get it!?)LOVE to see you make a 20 key piano out of wood! I don’t need it to be fancy or complicated. You can do whatever you want but it does have to be wood and 20 keys and that’s everything! See you on the video you will make out of this!
You won my heart buddy! ❤ Didn't used a single nail but still it seems to be a solid build! 🙌 You made it look like an easy task. Very nice and fine work of art. ❤ Plus it also sounds amazingly good.

THIS! At 5:02, we see him pound the neck into the body with the help of a 2X4 and a hammer :) I have been repairing old, forgotten, broken acoustic guitars, and every time I have to do a neck reset, the dove tail joints NEVER match up perfectly. I up to my neck in shims, or replacement wood to make new dove tail joints for them, sad to say. This guy did it right the first time!
lol. All the things you say apply for me too. In a video you can kind of hide those things sometimes. But sometimes you get lucky and the joints fit together nicely! :)
Yours was perfect, and a joy to watch. These other guitars that I have been repairing, ugh... It's like the manufacturers went with the ballpark idea of making matching dovetail joints lol. At least they give me the opportunity to learn how to repair guitar necks properly. Keep up the fantastic work!
Even in het nederlands.
At 1:20 when you mounted the body on the lathe you should have put the chuck on the inside that way you wouldn't have screw holes to hide, use some scrap wood as a spacer if need be.
I thank you. I really want to make one but I still need to figure out how to make certain things ( I also need a device to bent thin wood sheets). I hope in future I will!
Scrap wood City With your skills & tools, you will be able to make a device to bend wood sides. A light fitting (brass) in tin can with lightbulb and heat-resistant cable/flex. They once called it butle. or, use a can (must be fixed to wood and clamped) and a heat gun. Not sure if a hair dryer would be hot enough. Or, you could cut out a "former" which is a fixed sized shape, wet the sides a little, wrap in foil and use a heat gun/hairdryer. It is the steam it creates that relaxes the resins, so that you can bend the wood. Once shaped, you need to keep it in the shape for 24 hours before working on the sides.
At 1:31 he was using a lathe. Does anyone know the specific manufacturer and model of the lathe that was used? I also built on of these. they are so cool. Thanks for amking these awesome videos
Thank you. I did a quick google search for it and i couldn't find it. is there a model number? I also am trying to make this but I do not have a lathe. Is there a way to make the body(the round part) round without a lathe or bandsaw?

Tsouras is the same neck as 3-string bouzouki but smaller body.
from start to finish, i love your creativity and passion for building things. thank you man!
I thank you

Cool project! 👍 Thanks for sharing SWC!
Thanks man, very glad you liked it
Oh man, I love the sound. I could totally see either Eastern music or a Film score for a Western played on something like this. Great job!
Thank you. I was actually improvising on one of my favorites eastern scales. Very common in Greek music.
Sweet! Thanks again for sharing!
WOW !!!! not only do you make amazing things out of scrap ..but you also know how to play musical instruments ...
thanks man for the nice words
Awesome project! Might have to try making something similar!
Nice to hear that, thank you

Well!! you used every tool in the shop, now, thats a good project!
Thank you glad you liked it. Almost every tool!
This is like a Dulcimer and a Banjo had a baby. It sounds really nice.
I guess you could say that too. Thank you
Were pleased you played a tune at the end ;0
I always play something in the end when I make these instruments. Thank you

wow that is a real cool instrument. you did a great job making it
This build looks like something a *DAD* could make.
I think when he put together the blocks on the blue tape it was so satisfying...
lol, true
Even though the video is old the work is great.
thank you
Dude, that is awesome. Ultimate gratification. Love your "back to basics" style videos.
thanks man, glad to hear that
Not so sure if using all that machinery is really back to basics!
Absolutely fantastic mate!
A very well done job.
Thank you very much
I love your passion & patience. Pressed thumb up button for you. Thanks for video

It took hours upon hours of sanding and the wonderful waiting for glue to dry. That's the reason I don't like speed me up videos. This was good.
Such a unique sound! Masterfully done!
Thank you
Always liked the look and sound of this one.
Thank you
You have recreated the instrument from my dreams!

cool m8, i have been making small cigar box type guitars myself. every guitar i make has a unique sound. so much fun.
Awesome. Every DIY instrument is always unique!
Awesome work!!! It is impressive to see all stages of the construction of this instrument!! Really fantastic!!
thank you my friens
With a three stringed DAD tuning you have basically a mountain dulcimer with the shape of a banjo and some added half-steps. A non-modular dulcimer
HA! Great idea using two of the fret markers as locating pins for gluing on the fretboard! LIked so I can find that again!
thank you very much

Great video, love how you dovetailed the neck in
thank you
It's the "DAD" Instrument! Perfect for Father's Day! ;)
lol, true!
... it's just drop d...
End grain is hard to get a strong bond but love your project
Reminds me a lot of the Greek/Irish bouzouki!
yes it has similarities. But I believe the tuning DAD and the melody I played it in the end are the elements that make someone think of Greek music.
WOW ! Good. You are truly blessed.
thank you
Great video. I really like the way you do your videos. Very well done. The instrument came out terrific!
thank you very much my friend
I got a major kick out of that 😎. Thank you. A Base Next?😽

Great video! I'm planning on making an instrument, and this is so inspirational! Thanks for sharing!
its nice how you create this instrument with limited tools :)
Thank you
I love your videos, especially about musical instruments, but could you play more on them? It's interesting to hear more of the sound)
thank you. Perhaps I will play them more in future. For now I try to focus my channel more on woodworking!
After watching your video, I also started making musical instruments.) I made kalimba, now I'm making an octave mandolin.
Awesome to hear that!
Wow how amazing this is

Super coool sound!!
thanks man
If I ever go back in time to the bronze age in northern Europe I'll be sure to make this to entertain my fellow tribesmen, thank you
Cool point of view
Why is everyone so obsessed with the tuning? It's just drop D! That's a standard tuning for cigar box/3 string style guitars
Basically it’s a pretty standard tuning in Greek folk music and three string instruments
with a few mods this could be a nice mountain banjo.
Awesome, I'll search more info on that instrument
Right, looks like a cross between m.banjo and baglama.
Παρα πολυ ωραιο!!!! Μπραβο Scrap wood City!!!!
Σε ευχαριστώ πολύ
Bravissimo e complimenti per la manualità....
wow what a cool video thanks ............sounds great as well............your very tallented
sweet dovetail though. as a fellow luthier those are hard to do by hand like that even in soft pine. i tip my hat to thee.
Thank you very much
oh mate, I enjoyed this so much! a really satisfying job and turned out really well. thought you'd use that draw knife for shaping the neck!!
Thanks man. The draw knife seemed too aggressive for that little neck
I forgot to ask if the pick you were using is home made too ;)
That isn't a draw knife, it's a spoke shave - a spoke shave can be set to remove a small amount of wood.
Home
Yeap! To my workshop! I gonna make me one myself!!
Great work!!! Merry Christmas. Mauro
Thank you very much, Merry Christmas, Dimitris
