There are musicians and music groups that will be remembered and listened to for generations and generations. Steeleye Span is definitely on that list!
Steeleye Span... I grew up with them and as a kid, I knew all lyrics by heart of their first albums. Then I lost them, but found them again, recently and my goodness..., meanwhile, these folks didn't sit still and made so many fantastic albums. Three cheers for Spotify and TH-cam. This song, Somewhere Along The Road is sung so beautifully and all the voices go so well together, but in all honesty, I must say that I miss Peter Knight's contribution so much. His voice is so touching and unreplaceable. And the way he plays the violin..., like no other. Will he ever join the band again? Who knows...!
Beautiful Can't imagine who would bother to give this a thumbs down, that is sad. Steeleye Span is so great and has lasted so long with such wonderful different unique music.
From Keith Jones Christian drummer Barnstaple North Devon. After 45 years of playing on the road, now retired to Bude. Enjoyed this song from Steeleye Span, always a good band. Was on the same bill with them back in l972, when I was with UK band Spirogyra. We were actually playing in France at the time. Enjoyed the few days we had over there - it seems a long time ago now, maybe one day we'll meet somewhere along the road! God Bless (K.J.) Psalm 23.
THE song to heal today-in multiple and evocative ways. For 6 weeks, I have been considering whether I’d like to integrate this song into my repertoire, listening to Maddy’s solo version-deciding whether acapella or with what instruments, what might go well before and after - like that. At first, I was hearing it sung from a hopeful heart seeking love. It still is that, but the resonances and echoes in the earth community’s challenges this very moment, are louder today than ever. “Somewhere a Voice” leaves interpretation in hope open. Love this version, all of you. Stay Safe.
Thank You Steeleye Span for this Hymne for the Soul and the heart, I have followed your music now for some fifty years.Hope there are many years to come. Love from Germany
I hadn't heard this recording before, though I do have the track on another CD. Love this version SO much - I couldn't resist doing my own harmonising along with them!
I am part of Ewanrigg Community Choir in Maryport (Cumbria UK) We are fortunate enough to not only have had a workshop with Maddy Prior - we also had Rick Kemp with us and last night we performed our version of `Deep in the darkest night` for him - which he loved. He then sang `Somewhere Along The Road` for us and asked that we do a version as well. Its a gorgeous tune and we shall be only too pleased to add this song to our list of songs. Rick your a great guy - looking forward to having you back with us to hear the song.
This song just popped into my head in a quiet moment, having heard it only a couple of times in my life ans now I must learn it, play it on my guitar and try to sing it if only for me, even only once. Thank you Steeleye Span. Di.
My favourite version is Maddy Prior’s from the Silly Sisters album. To me, that is the version which truly conveys the full beauty of this song. Just her voice and piano.
Her version from the album “Year” makes me cry. I heard it playing at work a few years back and I had to google it on my break and it made me burst out bawling upon hearing it. My favorite version. The one from Silly Sisters is okay too.
I lost my my parents and a half year ago I lost lost my twin Brother. I was devastated. But I have a daughter and we are are 5 children left. This song gives me hope to go on. Thank s a lot,, sincerely yours Ernst
one of the singers called Andrew Sinclair is a close friend of mine as he hails from Maryport Cumbria where i live. I had also met Maddy Prior back in January 2016 when she a special guest at my choir practice i have also got her autograph
Ah! The Span. How many other groups get better and better as they span the ages? No relaxing and living off their early hits for them (although I still enjoy an "All Around My Hat" on a regular basis).
Somewhere along the road Someone waits for me Beyond these present storms that blow Waiting patiently No secrets held in an open heart A spirit that soars over mountains Somewhere along the road Someone waits for me Somehow a guiding light Always shows the way To those who lose their way by night Searching for the day A day away from happiness Tomorrow will bring a new sunrise Somewhere along the road Someone waits for me Sometime when winds are still Unexpectedly Perhaps beyond this silent hill A voice will call to me Raise your eyes to see my world Raise your voice and sing out Somewhere along the road Someone waits for me
Wonderful... Ive been a fan of Steeleye Span for a long time...Just wondering, something very familiar about the air to this song has been niggling me for a while.. Am I right in thinking it is very close to "Nearer my God, to Thee?"
it was recorded at kirklinton hall in cumbria. near carlisle... the mansion used to be the place to go back in the day, casino, nightclub and burlesque... even the kray twins stayed here...
In addition to the very useful answer from Cain, the video must have been recorded at two locations. The second being the magical Stones Barn where Maddy holds her superb classes. My wife, Carol was lucky enough to go on a singing course there for her 50th birthday present.
I know that over time bands change - yes members come and go, sounds evolve, and the technology to make music improves. But at some point you have to say goodbye and move on. Steelye Span of 2023 is not the Steelye Span of 1975. It is what it is!
I sure hope they didn't pay a lot for that manor house before seeing it 😅 Does anyone know where this is, and how this once beautiful manor ended up as a hollow ruin? 😢
A little farther down the comments someone says it is Kirklinton Hall in Cumbria. No explanation how it came to fall into ruins, though. I agree that it is beautiful.
I commented on this once before but my comment has seemingly been deleted. This is a nice song but it is not Steeleye Span. Far to orchestrated and over engineered. Maddy, I have listened to you since you and Tim started. But it is time to end it.
There's no pleasing some people, really. If they did it exactly as they did it 30 years ago, you'd say that they haven't progressed, moved their style along, experimented with new ideas; if they do, then you complain that it's not the old Steeleye Span. The only change I would have made to this clip would be to have Maddy sing one verse solo, apart from that, it is beautiful, anthemic even.

Nonsense! In 100 years Steelye Span will be forgotten by almost everyone except maybe a small number of music historians.

A lifetime of living in those faces. Thank you all.

Envious people, I guess.

It`s a beautiful version. Their harmonizing are always very good. I wish they had done much more acapella stuff :-)
What is the word that goes further than most beautiful? This song deserves it. Thank you for this song, Steeleye Span!
A song for the soul, wonderful. Just Steeleye Span , I love it.
Those voices make the world for a moment a little bit better. THX

First heard at the end of a show at The Stables. Still ahs the same affect of calming me down no matter how I feel. Thank you.
I have always loved Steeleye Span, I saw them live late last year in St Patrick's Cathedral in my native Dublin, absolutely stunning.
I have Loved them for decades. This is so nice, I shed a tear for our world.
I feel I have grown p with them!! I'm nearly 70... and the love is still alive!! Colettexx

Beautiful! I should have expected it from this wonderful band!
You can hear every word!
This is such an awe inspiring recording. Beautiful voices and tastefully engineered.
Beautiful. Just reduced me to tears

Great recording of one of my all time favourite songs and a beautiful video
Dies ist ein wundervolles Lied. Es hilft mir momentan aus einer schweren Lebenskrise wieder heraus zu kommen.
Fantastic!
A wonderful version of a beautiful song

Simply perfect!
Brilliant! Steeleye!
Love Steeleye Span
Fabulous
Great song and a really lovely video. MAGICAL,
Beautiful and brilliant
so beautiful , heard Maddy SING THIS BEFORE
This is so beautiful! I wish they hadn't put the orchestral bit at the end though - it spoils the moment!
Agreed-- it's a little over-produced for the folk-rock sound they're known for.
I liked it. :)
The orchestra just seemed a harsh contrast after the fine a cappella rendition.
Beautiful ❤️
Great mix.
Just Magnificent!
This is truly beautiful
Superb

true legends
My favourite S.S. recording is still the Boars Head carol, but this runs it a close second.
So beautiful magical

I whole heartedly agree with you (except to me All Around My Hat was their lowest point, a pop song for the masses)
Yea.
Just LOVELY......😚
Rick Kemp sang it to us last Saturday! (He wrote it.) Gorgeous.
Después de tantos años siguen haciendo cosas asi, es que tienen algo especial

To the 9 thumbs down people.......you have no souls.......hope you find them soon.
What a beautiful song ! Can someone tell me the place where this was recorded. It's a pity such a stately mansion is so dilapidated.

I don't know this line up apart from Maddy Prior?
With their permission, I will be taken from the Church to this.
I can describe this in one simple phrase: lightning in a bottle. And, as I lost both parents at this time of year, poignant, very poignant.

In what way is an a capella song over-orchestrated? No wonder your previous comment was deleted......
