    I came across this video whilst trying to learn about a lime kiln on my grandfather's farm in Ireland. The Irish used to make plaster from the lime and cover their limestone cottages with it, in a pure brilliant white. It's something iconic of Ireland when you see the old white cottages against the emerald green backdrop of the countryside.

      As children , we all were often shanghied to white wash the steading (farm buildings) cow sheds (byers) and pig pens..
      My Uncle was an old school plasterer, that also ran a lime kiln on the families land..
      But as time went on they bought the lime and slacked it in tubs .. brickies / masons and plasters even painters all bought from us..

    Add extra water as you prepare the white wash, let it settle, pour off the clear water from the top. Since you used hardwood in the fire, and the wood ash mixed with the rain slacked lime, you probably have a high potassium content in the final product. If you were able to remove just the cooked lime rocks this would not be the case. Adding more water to the white wash preparation will dissolve out most of the potassium into the water. The potassium rich water that you drain off can be added to garden plants that love it, like Tomatoes and Potatoes.

    You need to add sand for mortar.
    Youre basically smearing plaster onto rocks.
    Lime putty would be used to finish walls of wattle and daub, over a coarse coat of 'mortar' mixed with horse hair 'brown coat'

    Wow!! I have to say that was awesome!! Making Calcium Oxide is really useful for many survival chemistry situations. The one that comes to mind right away is removing water from alcohol to use in fuel or synthetic processes. A few years back I needed Calcium oxide for some synthetic work I was doing and I went out to around Penn State and there was a Quarry. If I bought CaO from a chemical company it was $50 a pound and I believe I bought several hundred pounds for $50....great video my friend!!!

    Thank you. I was aware of early Lycoming/Tioga farmers made their own lime from limestone but never knew the technique. You deserve to go back in time and intercede for others.

    You add the lime to the water and let it dissolve. The longer you let it sit the better.

    Thanks so much for sharing, I am glad that you found out why your elder said to wait for the whitewash after mixing. I am amazed at how much lime you were able to make! Wow! I am certainly going to mine our stonefences here for limestone and try this out next time I have a brush pile that needs burning.
    Thanks for sharing

    3:40 I think that the last and largest load of limestone is put at the top because heat rises, so that load will get the most heat. Also, the lower logs may catch falling stone as the top logs burn. In that way the rocks are kept in the hottest part of the fire.

  • @___LC___
    @___LC___ 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Then you put the more solid pieces into water and see if it slakes. Sometimes, you get a very solid piece that completely slakes or partially and you get quite a bit of lime.

    The inrush of air feeding the flames in the outer ring probably heated the lime in that area better and was more efficient in converting the lime.

    You wasted much by letting it slake, but for beginners, it's probably better for your safety, you need to store your UNSLAKED lime (Quicklime) in moisture proof containers, barrels are fine, but once slaked, lime is useless for most traditional usage other than tanning, sewage treatment and soil conditioning, in building it is no good for a sand-lime mortar, unless cement is added, 25% of the lime weight or 1/4, thus making it similar to hydrolic lime, (quicklime) based mortar, whitewash must be cooked using the heat generated by Quicklime, a small amount of Tallow (beef fat), should be added, this makes it waterproof, if you simply use slaked lime and water, it is only good for a day, after that it just comes off when you touch it, , and that which DOES hold fast, will need repainting in a year, if you try to use whitewash that as been mixed and left for a day or two, it is all but useless....the info is there, but it is in the U.K. the old hands are found.

      This is what was used to make the mortar for the great, ancient cathedrals of Europe. They have help up rather well, considering they have been standing for hundreds of years.

    Are there different grades of limestone? The limestone around here is yellow,some have gray layers in it. Does it matter?

    • @vanwags
      @vanwags  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes. there are differences in limestone. one example is magnesium vs calcium content.

  • @JDHogg
    @JDHogg 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Always pour lime into water not water into lime. pouring water into lime can cause a steam explosion.

    • @JDHogg
      @JDHogg 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      also slaking the lime under water for a season or a year makes it more workable and stronger

    • @sparksmcgee6641
      @sparksmcgee6641 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      But pouring lime into water can cause splashing of caustic material. I think its more likely you'd get hurt that way.
      He should have been wearing a mask and gloves at the least for a lot of this.
      I know people have to talk for the cider but I didn't see any PPE.
      I know on of the countries best player guys and he's blind in one eye something dropping on his face. He had over a decade of experience when that happened.
      St least it looks like the kids were held back while he was sifting the lime for the whitewash

    I thought that burnt lime will boil a drop of water placed on it , and this can be used to test it, is this correct?

    • @vanwags
      @vanwags  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would expect heat when mixed, an exothermic reaction. I did not get to see that because of the heavy rain storm that hit at the end of our burn.

    • @shannondove96
      @shannondove96 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      vanwags i watched another video just to be sure, and it does boil water when mixed, and is a good test to see if you actualy made burnt lime.

    • @shannondove96
      @shannondove96 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      vanwags i think it can be used in an emergency to heat up food , for example a cup of coffee or a baby bottle. Just keep it in an air tite container in the kitchen, and just open the container and mix with water, then set a pan, plate, cup , or pot on it. Dont let it in direct contact with food. Does not produce any toxic gases such as carbon monoxide, and should be safe in a closed kitchen or tent

    • @StevenEElkins
      @StevenEElkins 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      shannon dove depends if you have a high calcium limestone and of course if it’s burned properly and thoroughly, and completely converted to calcium oxide. If you have a high calcium limestone that is burnt you’ll get a fast reaction once water is added. If you have a limestone that contains larger quantities naturally occurring impurities (clays, silicas and such that were trapped in the limestone as it was formed) you end up with a quicklime that will react/slake at a slower rate. Also depends on the temperature that limestone is burned at. Limestone forms different chemical components at higher temps verses lower temps. If you search the Internet for Alite or Belite which are impure calcium silicates, you’ll get a better idea of what I’m talking about.
