Since this is educational I would say “potash” not “ashes”. Soap is made from potash (aka potassium) bacon fat ideally, and lime. The potassium is suspended in bar of lime/fat until mixed with water and voila, microscopic explosions 🎉🥳 Great video!
This is a good video on the general information of lime. From my building material class and learning from TH-cam, what’s interesting is that on limewashed walls, the calcium hydroxide (aq.) reacts with carbon dioxide in the air to form calcite salts (and some moisture); the salt has a reflective quality from its crystalline structures-visually making the walls brighter, reflects sunlight and subsequently cooling and impart this pleasant effect around the house. I feel this is a brilliant material. 7:25 (My take and opinions) on danger: all chemicals, one way or another, are inherently hazardous. Hazardous, here used as an adjective to mean, “to chance or to encounter risk or danger”. I believe there are precautionary steps and safety measures in place when processing quicklime. In practice, quicklime are slaked in large metal drums and then usually left for a few months to mature into good workable lime putty.
Modern paper mills use gigantic horizontal lime kilns to produce calcium hydroxide, which in term is used to regenerate the sodium hydroxide used to digest wood into fiber pulp. They are so big that they have to be kept spinning or else their own weight will deform them at their operating temperatures.

To come up with something like this.. how much more understanding did we used to have of elements?! This just shows how much dumber we are all getting the further we advance. We need more history incorporated into all subjects.. not just political and societal and geographical history...
I'm asking myself, On Gilligan's Island, why didn't the Professor make Quicklime to construct with? 🤔 Then we see the dangers. 😱 Gilligan probably would have killed them all. 🤣

Leather tanners use simmiler barrels for skins that need hair removed etc.

PLEASE....we use it still, in traditional building restoration, farmhouses, cobblestone walls, etc, you don't need to be wealthy, just patient.
