I just replaced my older Fly 6 with a new one after the battery died. A few observations of my own: * The incident detection is far too sensitive. I turned it off because it triggered on every single ride, and then the device would power itself off. I simply use a large micro SD card to reduce the chance of losing important video. * A replaceable battery would be nice. This a fairly expensive device to last only two years or so before the battery refuses to take a charge. * I've had quite a few car drivers start yelling at me while waiting for a light to change. Whenever this happens, I point out the camera and remind them of how quickly I can upload their antics to TH-cam. At this point, most just leave me alone. However, there have been a few times were people got more aggressive once they knew they were being recorded. I'd really like to see a light/radar/camera all-in-one combo. Maybe Garmin could give that a go in a future revision of the Varia.
When your device is fully charged to the green light what does the app report the battery % as? Mine started off at 87% and has reduced to 70% over about 6mths.
Mike Simms curious why someone would yell at you while waiting for a light? Has never happened to me and I live in busy Southern California. I always have a my fly6ce and a GoPro hero6 on a chest mount when I ride! People don’t miss my obvious chest mount so that helps a lot too. I also strap a knife on the back strap of my chest mount and have pretty big biceps so maybe that helps too lol! Be safe man I got your back in spirit.

I owned the Cycliq Fly 6 (V) in the 2017, and the new Cycliq Fly 6 CE from january 2018. I just returned two of them. FIRST: It's not waterproof (Try it for yourself!!). His battery -for time recording- lasts 2,5 hours at most. Final result? I use it with a little powerbank, then it's ok. But, is not at all a well successful project, they could do more in Cycliq without doubt.BTW: it's TODAY the only hardware that integrates a powerful led-lights to a video camera. I hope to see a.s.a.p. an important upgrade by Cycliq or whatelse!!
I've been running the Fly12CE and Fly6CE on my road bike every time I ride for several months now. I like it because it's set it and forget it. If something happens, you got on video on the SD card. If something happens and you want to make sure you keep it on video just stop and lay your bike over. Files get locked if it senses the bike has gone from upright to horizontal. Battery life is right on what they say and when the battery gets low it will stop video recording in favor of the lights (might be setting) and that saved me on a ride home in the dark. I also ride with the Fly6CE on my MTB and this camera has seen some abuse and still works great.
LOVE my Fly6. Had a crash 12months ago, and because of the camera I was able to prove the car driver was 100% at fault (crossed double white lines and hit me head on) This saved me alot of trouble dealing with Insurance companies trying to find who was a fault.
i saw the car up ahead. and in the few moments before she hit me. I recall thinking. Fuck that car is going fast. Fuck thats on the wrong side of the road. Fuck i am about to die. Somehow i got far enough left that she only clipped my back wheel which then rotated me back into her car.
Thank for the review. Have the old C6 and the old Fly12. Thanks for letting me analyze that it's not worth upgrading. Good bike lights tough. Glad the channel is up!!!
Ha. I was right now thinking exactly about the same. And my plan is to get them both and put them side by side to seatpost. Only need to figure the way how to attach them like that.
You're so right! I luckily have had a Garmin varia radar taillight for over a year now, and it truly is the best bike-related thing I have. Better than a power meter, better than a GPS head unit. I still ride with a nice, dorky mirror installed on my left handlebar, but having my watch AND GPS head unit beep and lightup and vibrate when cars are coming up behind me changed riding for me. I feel so, so much safer. And the radar IS accurate, even with 5 cars approaching, the display does show 5 separate cars! If Garmin added a GOOD camera to it, I'd buy it. It would be expensive, but I'd buy it. If it were reliable, dependable and simple to use, it would be the perfect thing: A light, a radar and a rear camera.
Thanks. I'll admit this wasn't a full rundown, more of a 'just go out and ride' kind of experience presentation. The links in the description are for Ray's take on things, to Amazon US (there's other user reviews there), and to the official website with all the specs.
Hi Shane. Thanks for the review looking forward to your follow up. Really its job is to be a WITNESS if something bad happens. I've had a Fly 6 CE for 6 months now. Purchased after being tagged by a car. I have only looked at the video output once after getting the unit just to see if it could live up to its purpose which it does. Since then I just turn it on and let it do its thing. If I want to record something to look pretty I use an action cam. As you say Horses for Courses and these two horses have different courses one is for pretty courses and the Fly 6 is for protection courses. If I never have to look at what it records or use the software then its a win in my books. (Agreed with other poster tho. A unit with radar and light and cam would be really great! )
It needs to be good enough for accident capture /adventure camera in one. Even if you just wanted to show a friend a bit of footage, it is just un watchable. I was seriously thinking of buying one of these and opted for the varia radar, so glad I did, that is an awesome piece of kit. Works so well!
As a backup, when I get a close pass, I read the plate into my front mounted GoPro. It’s easier than trying to decipher the plate afterwards from the Fly6 footage. Just practice your phonetic alphabet
Hi Nigel, I know my phonetic alphabet, and use it like a second language when making claims, and reporting incidents...find they respect you more seeing you know this alphabet.
I have the same exposure variation you have on my unit. Cycliq stated they were looking into it. I have many more issues with them but am having a hard time getting Cycliq to recognize the issues, and even more knowing if they'll address them or not. Other issues are: fluctuating beep sound levels (I had two units, the first was so faint I couldn't hear if I had turned it on or off with normal outdoor sounds, the second unit was much louder, but then ended up being as soft after a few uses), cryptic sequence to turn on (I have to press many times, and it never turns on on the first few tries), and the light options you show on the app revert to only three modes regardless of the selections. I have tickets opened with them, but no clear answers for most of the issues, and that, for months. Also, after just one ride in the rain, the rubber on the strap to hold to the mount came off and the strap was stretched when wet, so the unit would move around. I love the idea of the product, and understand it's a new company trying to make right, but now on their 3rd version, I'm still feeling like I'm testing an unreleased product. I am very eager for them to get this right, otherwise, to see some competition...
Generally pretty happy with my Fly6CE. My first one had water ingress which was apparently a first bad batch and was replaced promptly. However the 2nd one I’ve been using for about 6mths now has gone from reporting full charge at 87% when new to now only charging to 70%. There is apparently a firmware update to ‘fix’ this coming soon. However I’m a bit suss that it will actually just be to mask the issue and report 100% in the app when the green fully charged light comes on. I haven’t had time to do any proper battery life testing to see if the performance is degrading.
Updating firmware via usb cable and firmware files? What year is this? 2005? Apart from that it looks pretty cool. Sure you can't compare it to a GoPro, but I guess the purpose of such a device is just to record "the unfortunate/unexpected" events and not to produce "cinematic images". I can see @10:01 that the birds are still out to get you :D
Great video once again Shane! I have both the Fly 6 and 12CE and they are great safety tools to have, however on my long rides (4-7hrs) I tend to keep the lights off as the battery life drops severely with lights on. Great for 2-4 hour rides but thats it. Also I completely agree with you on the firmware updates and the fact that they’ve taken wifi off of both units makes the uploading of footage a major pain in the ass. The software on my mac (the one for uploading footage not changing settings...yes there’s two) doesn’t work what so ever. I’ve talked to tech support and customer service several times and they were quite accommodating but then just stopped emailing back once they couldn’t fix the problem. Basically what I;m trying to say is I’ve adjusted the way I use the devices and it seems to be pretty good but they need to improve a lot of things I tell ya. And by the way, after about 4 months of use my rear fly 6 CE will only charge up to 87% battery...NOT IMPRESSED🤬
9:56... WAIT!!! You mean all your past footage wasn't on silky smooth roads? You mean Australia isn't paved like a baby's bottom everywhere????? nyuk! nyuk! nyuk!
I’ve broken 3 plastic mounts for my fly 12 ce in 5 months. I live in SoCal where the roads are smooth. It has broken when I ride on the bad pavement near the beach communities. The plastic twist mount always breaks in the same area of the mount the same way. It is rather heavy but I feel I need it in case I get hit by a driver on the PCH or in the city.
Is the camera on top of the mount or is the weight of the camera hanging by the mount? I bought a mount that had the Garmin on top and hung the camera below both extending forward of the handle bar but I thought it would drop the camera so I went with mounting the camera on top of the mount directly over the handle bars and I haven't had any issues and I ride on some roads that will nearly shake your teeth loose.
Yeah I put that configuration on my bike and maybe rode it around the neighborhood before I decided that camera is too heavy for that type of mount. I used the mount that came with the camera and mounted it above the handle bar between where the bar tape ends and the stem attaches. So far so good.
Spot on review Shane. As an owner I have to say It’s not what it was advertised to be and even at the price the quality can’t even compete with a 2nd gen Shimano Cam. I wouldn’t recommend it as it currently is. Did you test the operation via Garmin Edge? I can’t find the much advertised Connect IQ app to try it out. Overall I’d suggest potential purchasers viewing this video also read the comments section of DC Rainmakers review. Positive comments are few and far between.... PS Is this the review that got your channel pulled down????
I had a gen 1. lasted 12 weeks before the battery died. running a go pro black 6 now + bike rear light but that combo is quite a bit more expensive. I think this combo gives better results than the fly6 but definately more $$$$. However, I suspect it will have a longer life span than an all in one unit such as these. btw , it's "Zed" Shane ;) #straya
So glad I watched your review before buying! Think I’ll stick my old GoPro 5 black on the Pro mount too. Except where do your spare toolkit instead of saddle bag?
I have the fly6 CE and used to have the fly12 CE front camera but it was so glitchy I had to return it! My fly6 CE works ok I guess as I use them as safely cameras only. They should be ashamed of their software it’s awful! The computer app looks like it’s in beta testing or a project by an 8th grader. Hopefully they improve it or another company makes a better one! Something please! I do not use the light feature because I have a bontrager flare RT for that. Thanks for making this video Shane, I was wondering when you would review this.
Great, thorough review, as always Shane. Would you be able to show what the video quality is like when using it at night time? Would be good to see how it performs in those conditions
Not at all. I raised a support ticket with Cycliq last week to look at the footage I recorded recently. They pointed me towards a discount on the next generation model.... :/
The Velcro strap, if moved from bike to bike, over time, weakens or frays. Even the rubber backing disintegrates after a while. I hate the new straps. I've never had the older style rubber strap break.
IIRC you can do Strava data overlays directly in the Cycliq mobile app. Do you know if there is an app that does the same for Gopro footage or do you need a computer to do that? Asking because your video, and the comments people have posted here, made the Gopro look like a far more appetizing proposal than the Fly6/12 CE, dashcam or not.
There's no direct overlay for GoPro from cycling sensors as I understand. You can get speed/position from the GPS. For everything else interesting on a bike, use a Garmin VIRB camera with ANT+ sensor support. Or VIRB EDIT to do the overlay on PC/Mac post rides.
They really let themselves down on physical design. The buttons are abysmal.. you'd think they learned something after the 1st 2 models. Mine won't turn on occasionally unless I remove and ere-insert the SD card. And that rubber flap.. sheesh... had it come loose once, and it had to be a wet ride.. thought it was done for, but at least the nano-tech coating is one thing they have got right! Also have a fly12 - now the image stabilising on that is in fact very good. The cover to the port and SD card is good... however, I had the misfortune of ripping it out of the mount when it got caught up on a brake cable. Destroyed all the little tabs on the camera mount, had to do a Heath-Robinson and screw on the supplied universal mount to it and get an under-garmin mount. Battery life ... quite good, but less with IS on. The Fly12 really needs to be run in HDR mode as image is too wishwashy in SD - which means no IS :(
I had the older Fly6 and it was not that great without image stabilization. I now have the Fly12CE and Fly6CE and couldn't be more satisfied. The Fly6CE image stabilization is only available when running 720p. Therefore I run the Fly6CE at 720p and license plates are easy to read but only up close.
Thanks. I've got the original Fly6 that I won in a cycling magazine competition. Works okay but the light isn't that bright. I just use it on my TT bike at club events if it's a bit gloomy. Doubt that I would buy the latest model especially after watching this review.
True. I like the dash cam idea too. I’ve almost been hit off my bike too many times. I’ve been considering laser lights which mark out a bike lane of sorts. But a front and bike cam might be worthwhile.
I have both the Fly 6 CE and Fly 12 CE. I quite like them, the camera and light function is pretty much what I want. But I also bought them because of the CE part and that's pretty rubbish. ANT+ connectivity is too glitchy to be usable and the app is way too sure and it should really support firmware updates and access to videos. But then they haven't provided any meaningful updates for ages anyway. Oh, and the mounts are rubbish and the separate front combo mount expensive and fragile. Ending on a positive note: their support is pretty good.
I don't know if this a youtube thing but my version 2 Fly6 and my Fly12 both have better footage than what was shown here. Interestingly they cut the battery life down from the first version to the second of the Fly12 so that they could reduce the size.
Possibly TH-cam, depending what you're viewing on. If this is the case then this needs to be reviewed as what you see here is what I got out of the unit, with the latest firmware, etc.
@@gplama mine are not as good as a Go Pro, but much better. I suspect that youtube has just dumbed down the resolution. I will say that if you are going to take footage to the cops, having front and back helps and make sure your date/time are accurate. Having strava data on screen was a big help.
Thanks for video, I'm mostly interested in finding a solution to view rear while cycling...standard mirrors or camera ... any suggestions much appreciated?
So, if you only ride during daylight - which I only do now - and had the option for a competitively priced rear dashcam what would you use? This, with the rare backup of the light, a discounted hero5/6, session5, or something similar? Asking for a friend. Nice review. Impartial as always.
This. It does a great job for the price. My beefs with the optics and firmware/software are muffled by the relatively cheap price compared to a GoPro and the required battery pack to match the life of the Fly6
It seems to me that the natural utility of a rear bike cam would be to be as a rear view mirror as well. Livestream to a smartphone mounted on the stem would accomplish this, perhaps there’s another means of doing same. Is there a product that does this. The available units I’ve seen all require an lcd mounted which is bulky and redundant; most riders carry a mobile phone.
I have used all versions (original, V and CE) The company are very good to deal with as they discounted my second purchase (the battery died after 18 months) and replaced the V version with the CE when the battery proved to be a faulty after almost 2 years. Definitely agree the update process is $&);/)& awful especially when the video shows very different Mac screen shots to the version I run on my laptop
On the subject of firmware updates what's your take on Elite products - they don't support firmware updates at all, even on their top end trainers. Maybe they don't need them due to using a strain gauge to measure power but my Stages power meter gets updates?!?!
No review of your opinion of the actual light brightness? I see to many of these radar and camera systems include lights that are so lame I wonder why they even bothered to add the light function.
I was greatly surprised by how bright the lights were. There's not much brighter on the market. They are quite above the average brightness of the typical lights. On that front, I can only say good things. But... they are not really compatible with the Garmin light network protocol, even though they are stated to be.
maybe the higher frame rate will capture the number plates better? so go for the Garmin radar or the Cycliq? this is the question. record being lined up or "seeing " it with radar. hmmm.
i have mine setup (fly12ce and fly6ce) and plate reading is spotty at best. I figure, if i'm still alive after an incident, the mic on the fly12ce is pretty good so i'll just read the plates into the mic for later analysis.
Shane, can you please disclose if this was an ad, or paid promotion, or if they gave you the cameras? This company has been pushing hard lately and it would be nice to know where reviewers stand.
This isn't an ad or a paid promotion. If you think it was good enough for one, excellent. A representative of Cycliq left the camera for me at the Zwift stand at Eurobike a few months back. I've had no communication with them since. That's the full disclosure nuts and bolts. This video also took around 15hrs to research, produce, and upload. Likely another few hours will be spent responding to comments, keeping this place tidy from trolls, takedown emails, the standard jazz that happens when posting an independent take on things.
@@DanTuber Some have a 'preview' mode on phones... but it's not for the purpose of using all the time when in use. (It'll drain battery like nothing else)
You miss the quick start step 1.! I can't find the SD card, I can't get in my device setting. I need to buy the card to be able to use FLY6? can you please let me know the card specification. Thank you.
Ran mine one time till it stopped recording somewhere at the 4-to-5 hour mark. It ran the light at least another hour and half after that. Still wasn't dead when I turned it off.
I don't have exact figures with me, but with the lights off, the camera will run about 8 hours, and that will greatly be shortened by running the lights. With the solid light at max intensity, I believe it runs at just about 4 hours, then the camera stops a little before that and it keeps the remaining power exclusively for the light (you can't change that, as far as I know). Obviously, running the lights in flashing mode runs longer than solid.
Gryffes I have an issue where my 6CE refuses to take a full battery charge. Cycliq state that it is a problem with the latest firmware rather than the unit and have been promising an update since I raised a support ticket some 8 weeks ago. So far that hasn’t happened. If no joy in another month I’m considering returning it as not fit for purpose
Hi Shane, just bought a hero 7 silver $275. $385 for the 7 black. Now should I get the fly 6 ce, or another gopro instead for the rear?? Would love your thoughts. Thanks
They're better for image but worse for battery life. You'd need an external battery pack/case for a GoPro if you want to record more than an hour or two.
is it possibile to see what the fly6 records in realtime on the smartphone? can i see in real time what happens behind me ? or just in a second moment downloading the video on the PC?
Any idea whether can I mount this to the front horizontally and use the camera mode only for front capture, is there an option to rotate the camera for that?
I don't know what a D-Fuse is... I assume it's flat on the back? It may need some creativity with a block wedge. The strap can be pulled super-tight, so it won't go anywhere regardless of the mount.
2019 down to $200-It's great...once you get it working, this only took me 6 weeks! sent it back twice -third one worked but only with their sd card. I used a card off the "approved" list and it would not record the first fifteen minutes of any ride. Also the incident detection is rubbish -if you wheel your bike out of the shed on it's back wheel it will shut down fifteen minutes later, or if you lay it down at the park or pretty much anything that isn't really upright. The firmware still sucks to update. I would have crushed it in my workshop press if they weren't so help-full in getting it sorted. And yes the audio may as well not be there at all.
If your looking for a fly 12 ce I just put mine on eBay for $100.00 with a high end $45.00 SD card included. It’s only 6 months old. Works perfect but I can’t justify the weight or the need for the light since I only ride in the day.
i would argue a light is almost as important during the day. mindless drivers try to turn left in front of me a few times a year. at least the blinking light SHOULD register in their brains - even in the day time
Love the channel Shane, but I think you missed the point on this one. Comparing this to GoPro is a mistake. Fly6 and Fly12 are good dash cams with great lights. They show everything you need very clearly if there is an incident. The audio is good enough to capture an argument or other relevant sounds surrounding any incident. It's a safety device with record-ability, not a joy-cam. Plus: If you do get snuffed out or maimed, your family will be glad to have some evidence of what happened and whom is at fault.
The point was made many times indicating it wasn’t a fair comparison. What it did point out was the differences in what two companies call stabilisation. My expectations were not met. And that’s what I shared. I think I was fair in the assessment and acknowledgement of what the unit does. This wasn’t an advertisement in any way, whIch is what a lot of people expect - it’s how things are usually presented.
Fair enough. As stated above, it does everything I need it to, very well. I'll say I was surprised to see the difference in stabilization between the two. Definitely glad you touched on the firmware updates, it's a bit annoying but something I can live with. ...Soooo, maybe you didn't miss the whole point ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Cheers, g
If the battery life is 7 hours, then it should support SD cards that would allow recording at the top resolution for that duration - anything less is a bit pointless.
I tried the video stabilisation once and didn’t like it so I leave it off. My footage at 1080p30 looks much better than the footage here. I had problems with the connected features so that’s another thing I don’t use. Once the ambient light level drops, the footage is pretty much unusable for reading number plates - you need a much better camera for that. Even a GoPro struggles in low light.
How can you attach this device if you have a saddle bag ? Most serious cyclists, who want to take care of themselves and not depend on the charity of other cyclists, will have a saddle bag to hold essentials like an innertube , tools, etc.
I’ve been using it the Fly12ce for months. This product interferes with the Wahoo Element Bolts gps frequency. This is a fact!! If you stack them with the Cycliq out front mount you’ll have a useless Bolt. I would love a GoPro with an integrated light and all of the same bells and whistles. These guys at Cycliq didn’t get it right. I’m assuming there are licensing issues preventing them from making a dynamite product.
This is on the cards. I have the 12CE here too.... but it's kind of depressing messing about with tech that fails. I'll loop back to it one day soon. For now, it's time to ride bikes more! :)
Dear People, the Company contacted me after 10 weeks and 14 emails and are going to replace my product . So after a lot of emails they have realised that they need to support their customers. They seem to be doing a good job now with the replacement and repair. Thought I will let you all know as I informed you about how bad they were previously.
I really don’t understand why you need to connect any stuff to a computer, it can all be done via wifi or bluetooth from phones, wahoo have done this. Connecting to a computer to update is just a pain.
These devices are just fine. However what’s desperately needed is real time heads up or centrally located handlebar rear view. I’d rather prevent the accident rather than pretty footage after the fact!!
@@timdixo arm mounted mirror? What are you proposing, a 9 inch oled screen with direct feed from the cameras? Surely a $10 mirror that never runs out of battery is the smart tech choice.
MrBJPitt side mirrors distort perspective thus are inadequate to assist rear impact avoidance. I’m talking an iPhone sized image eg the failed Cerevellum concept or a heads up mirror as in the Reevu helmet. You’re “$10 mirror” ain’t going to cut the mustard.
I'm sure most motorists wouldn't know this is a camera if they saw it, but has anyone noticed drivers acting differently when using it on their bike? Had someone throw something at me and hit me in the back during a ride this weekend, so I'm in the market for a product like this.
I love my fly6 for the money it’s a great find. Not perfect but then I’m not shooting movies. Recently we had a group ride & had to report a car driver, my fly found the number plate easily & that light system is awesome so I’d say for the money it’s a good choice. Go pro is a big difference in price & is for shooting action films. I persnally feel your trying to box the fly in the same category & you can’t. It’s a incident recording device with a light. A go pro is an action camara with no lights !
Don't like the black. I like my old 1 that it looked like a light and not a camera (theft). Granted it was impossible to find a mount setup (short of 3d printing something) that could get that camera on my new TCR (D-Fuse post) -U10
The date and time still doesn't work properly, regularly falls out of sync. None of the connected Ant+ features work as advertised, Cyclic claim that the unit/s (12CE too) are only compatible with high end Garmin units for light networks, not mentioned anywhere in the marketing or on the box. Mounting the 12CE anywhere near your Garmin will interfere with GPS reception. The software is shameful, I have not once been able to save any footage with the Strava overlays, crashes or is just flat out wrong. The rubber coating embedded into the strap was stripped out in 3 rides. I still use them as lights and they will record some things, I hope that if I ever NEED the footage, it will identify a number plate and a good profile of the driver. Get a laugh out of reviewing some footage occasionally. In general, regret the purchase.
i think you bike bike has parkinsons, i have the fly6ce on the rear of my mountain bike and ride the forrest mtb trails (victoria australia) and it is stable as fuck , send yours back for a replacement shane as its a poor representation of an awesome product or maybe i should be greatful that i got a good one
True true. I did exaggerate slightly. I do understand it will have it pros and cons. For me the video quality and stabilization would matter, as I would use it for that very reason. Having failed so miserable at that, it wouldn't be something I would invest in. But I did enjoy the review, like everything else you make. Even though you get stuff for free, you always speak your peace honestly and THIS is what matters.
Not sure how you can compare the 60FPS GoPro when you turned the 60FPS off for this camera. It would help you get a frame for the number plate you were complaining about.
Great idea , poor product. My fly 6 will not work unless it is plugged in. Karl the support guru has stoped answering my emails, I assume he is overwhelmed with complaints. I had high hopes for this product I got great frustration.
I just replaced my older Fly 6 with a new one after the battery died. A few observations of my own:
* The incident detection is far too sensitive.
Agree on the replaceable battery.

Had a crash 12months ago, and because of the camera I was able to prove the car driver was 100% at fault (crossed double white lines and hit me head on) This saved me alot of trouble dealing with Insurance companies trying to find who was a fault.
jesus christ. I just watched your vid. horrendous!
Yeah. Wasn't a fun afternoon. Apparently the sun was in her eyes and she didn't even see me till I was sliding down the side of her car.
Shit Shane you are lucky to be with us still!! Did you notice her coming across the lane at all or just all happened so fast?
i saw the car up ahead. and in the few moments before she hit me. I recall thinking. Fuck that car is going fast. Fuck thats on the wrong side of the road. Fuck i am about to die. Somehow i got far enough left that she only clipped my back wheel which then rotated me back into her car.
Where's this video? I gotta see this.
Thank for the review. Have the old C6 and the old Fly12. Thanks for letting me analyze that it's not worth upgrading. Good bike lights tough. Glad the channel is up!!!
Very good review - like the balance you struck between pros and cons. Thank you.
A perfect combo would be a Garmin Varia radar, with a camera in it. Safety of knowing someone is behind you, video to capture something close or bad.
Ha. I was right now thinking exactly about the same. And my plan is to get them both and put them side by side to seatpost. Only need to figure the way how to attach them like that.
you can always get the varia radar only with no light
Funny that, they just released one haha
Exemplary review. Well done mate. Thanks
How is that going to help you if someone hits you, causes you to crash, brandishes a weapon or throws an object at you?
Nailed it as always. Bloody great, clear and logical video.
This is the way, my friends. Say the plate out loud for your camera!
welcome back :) you were sorely missed
Lama v2.0. They just had to disconnect me to update the firmware.
Great video, thanks for the thorough walkthrough and honest opinion!
I'm still running the 2nd Gen Fly 6 after 3+ years. Sure the video quality is not like a HD Go-Pro, but it does the job.
I would like to see rearcamera that makes 3 in 1. Camera, red light and reidar (that record when cars come)
That's a brilliant idea.
It getting close "Garmin Radar Varia"
Yes. You can open tickets with them but IF they read them properly they STILL DON"T answer them soon.
Cheers for the comment. Other user experiences are just as valuable as these videos themselves. 👍🏼
Brett Corbett I’m having the same issue and I’m in the USA so it’s hard for them to send me the replacement unit.
You mean Australia isn't paved like a baby's bottom everywhere????? nyuk! nyuk! nyuk!
Has anything improved in the pas t 4 years or is it still the same
Any alternatives to this for a rear light / camera combo?
Great review! Thanks!
My camera hangs below my garmin.
Yeah I put that configuration on my bike and maybe rode it around the neighborhood before I decided that camera is too heavy for that type of mount. I used the mount that came with the camera and mounted it above the handle bar between where the bar tape ends and the stem attaches. So far so good.
I broke one of the expensive metal combo front mounts too.
Thanks for the review, too bad that most little cameras don't come close to the goprops when it comes to image stabilization
Thanks. Good review!
Nice review. I was looking at getting these but maybe not now.
I wonder why GoPro haven’t entered this market yet. They have the superior video capture tech, just add light. Done.
Good question. The market may be a little small. GoPro are 'everything' / 'lifestyle' which is much broader than cycling.
Can gopro cameras do looprecordins?
@@ketjuariittaa yes they can
A new firmware has just been released for the battery issue, about to install now.
Cheers for the comments. I didn't cover the entire product offering, so it's great to get user accounts of the experience.
Test the incident detection as the unit can power off on a bumpy road
Great, thorough review, as always Shane. Would you be able to show what the video quality is like when using it at night time? Would be good to see how it performs in those conditions
I wonder if this system has been improved since your review? Great review my friend!
Wondering if since you your setting on the fly 6 that you set it on 30fps might have been smoother if it was at a higher frame rate?
I can hang my go pro from the seat rails but it’s not practical compared to a camera built into your light.
9:31 was that a snake in the middle of road???
I thought about getting this set but I use the Garmin Radar. Wish they had included a camera on that.
I use the Garmin varia as well... You can use both, just like he uses the go pro and cycliq here.
Thanks. I've got the original Fly6 that I won in a cycling magazine competition. Works okay but the light isn't that bright. I just use it on my TT bike at club events if it's a bit gloomy. Doubt that I would buy the latest model especially after watching this review.
3:29 "Forever Sharp" paring knife! 😅
I bought a set of those knives long time ago. Still going strong! 👍🔪
Well spotted!
Thx for this review. I’ve been looking for some lights for my urban road cycling and was considering this as an option. Not anymore.
Maybe overkill for just the light side of things.
True. I like the dash cam idea too. I’ve almost been hit off my bike too many times.
I’ve been considering laser lights which mark out a bike lane of sorts. But a front and bike cam might be worthwhile.
Maybe try number plate identification with the image stabilisation off. Mine seems ok at 1080p 60fps.
I did that and it's slightly better. But not much.
Which GoPro mount are you using? That looks slick!
Pro Stealth saddle mount.
@@gplama Thank you Shane!
I'm on their case on this one, on a regular basis. :)
Very tidy rear facing Go Pro saddle mount on the bike, is that GoPro's own?
Shimano adapter for the Pro Stealth saddle.
No review of your opinion of the actual light brightness? I see to many of these radar and camera systems include lights that are so lame I wonder why they even bothered to add the light function.
100 lumen. It's bright. That's really about it.
I was greatly surprised by how bright the lights were. There's not much brighter on the market. They are quite above the average brightness of the typical lights. On that front, I can only say good things. But... they are not really compatible with the Garmin light network protocol, even though they are stated to be.
Hi Shane do you still use this camera?
No. I use the Varia Radar from Garmin on the back.
@@gplama thankyou!
I have this a year alll most and I gave up on firmware updates... it's just too complicated
It's automatic with the PC Application. No need to copy files or anything like that.
maybe the higher frame rate will capture the number plates better? so go for the Garmin radar or the Cycliq? this is the question. record being lined up or "seeing " it with radar. hmmm.
i have mine setup (fly12ce and fly6ce) and plate reading is spotty at best.
:lol if it was an add he didn't do them many favors with it.
So if you paid for the camera what would your opinion be?
The same as what I've given right here.
Shane Miller - GPLama Thanks for the transparency! Great video.
They great when they record and not so good when they turn off
after a few minutes into a ride
Do either of these cameras give you a live feed on your phone?...ie, so you don't have to turn your head to look back.
Nope
@@gplama Does any camera like that exist?
@@DanTuber Some have a 'preview' mode on phones... but it's not for the purpose of using all the time when in use. (It'll drain battery like nothing else)
You miss the quick start step 1.! I can't find the SD card, I can't get in my device setting. I need to buy the card to be able to use FLY6? can you please let me know the card specification. Thank you.
I believe they use a 32GB MicroSD. Best contact Cycliq or check their website for official support.
Can you test the battery life for recording and recording+light? Bike product manufacturers tend to be very optimistic.
It's not something I'll loop back to soon. If any owners can chip in here, please do.
I only ever use mine with recording+light and then it usually runs out of power somewhere between 4 and 5 hours into my ride.
@@gplama good point. Thanks mate
is it possibile to see what the fly6 records in realtime on the smartphone? can i see in real time what happens behind me ? or just in a second moment downloading the video on the PC?
Nope
can you watch live on your phone whats going on behind you ??
No
Any idea whether can I mount this to the front horizontally and use the camera mode only for front capture, is there an option to rotate the camera for that?
I'm not sure, that's a good one for Cycliq Support.
Thanks for your reply, will try to get to them.
48 seconds in, that's all I need to see, Googled it and it's very affordable, defo getting it 👍
means gopro more clearer and more stable?
Yes. But the battery and recording is different on a GoPro.
are any of the rubber pads "flat" enough to be used with Giant's D-Fuse seatpost? i've had a lot of trouble with lights not sitting center due to it.
I don't know what a D-Fuse is... I assume it's flat on the back? It may need some creativity with a block wedge. The strap can be pulled super-tight, so it won't go anywhere regardless of the mount.
Can you video the footage off your phone now with the fly6 ce?
No.
That is the worst part!
Out of interest, how does stability and clarity compare with the Session 5?
See my Ride Daylesford video posted today with that in use.
Would a windsock help the audio?
I don't think so. There wasn't a lot of wind when I did the to-cameara when the bike was stationary and it was still terrible.
What about the front cam version?
Good question. Let's let the dust settle on this one first. I need a long ride or two between spending so many hours at things that don't impress me.
If your looking for a fly 12 ce I just put mine on eBay for $100.00 with a high end $45.00 SD card included. It’s only 6 months old. Works perfect but I can’t justify the weight or the need for the light since I only ride in the day.
i would argue a light is almost as important during the day. mindless drivers try to turn left in front of me a few times a year. at least the blinking light SHOULD register in their brains - even in the day time
I got the rear light and battery just won’t charge up
Love the channel Shane, but I think you missed the point on this one.
Definitely glad you touched on the firmware updates, it's a bit annoying but something I can live with.
...Soooo, maybe you didn't miss the whole point ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Cheers, g
If the battery life is 7 hours, then it should support SD cards that would allow recording at the top resolution for that duration - anything less is a bit pointless.
Marketing. You'll find companies advertise "up to x hours"... with minimal features. It's the game they all play.
Depends how much seat post you have.
The aldi bikemate light camera shits on this
I really don’t understand why you need to connect any stuff to a computer, it can all be done via wifi or bluetooth from phones, wahoo have done this. Connecting to a computer to update is just a pain.
These devices are just fine.
However what’s desperately needed is real time heads up or centrally located handlebar rear view.
I’d rather prevent the accident rather than pretty footage after the fact!!
Why not just use a rear mirror?
MrBJPitt have used a mirror for 20 years and now a Varia radar.
A side mounted mirror gives a compromised view and requires excessive eye diversion.
@@timdixo you do realise mirror tech is fairly advanced. They can create flat ones too.... It seems you really just want fancy tech.
I'm sure most motorists wouldn't know this is a camera if they saw it, but has anyone noticed drivers acting differently when using it on their bike? Had someone throw something at me and hit me in the back during a ride this weekend, so I'm in the market for a product like this.
Battery life gets terrible. Looking at 90 minutes with no lights on after several months use
Better to have gaming varia 510 radar and cheaper go pro on the back saddle
i think you bike bike has parkinsons, i have the fly6ce on the rear of my mountain bike and ride the forrest mtb trails (victoria australia) and it is stable as fuck , send yours back for a replacement shane as its a poor representation of an awesome product or maybe i should be greatful that i got a good one
Great review Shane. I do however feel like I just saw a review of an overpriced item, that might as well could have been a 10$ aliexpress camera.
I'd give it more rope than that. There's a lot crammed in here that you won't get with a $10 camera.
The blinky lights seem hopelessly useless :(
Not sure how you can compare the 60FPS GoPro when you turned the 60FPS off for this camera. It would help you get a frame for the number plate you were complaining about.
The GoPro was on 30fps too. If this won't capture detail at 30fps then it shouldn't be an option to use. I won't make excuses for it, or myself.
Are you able to insert the number plate images captured on the GoPro for comparison to illustrate the difference between the two devices?@@gplama
Great idea , poor product. My fly 6 will not work unless it is plugged in. Karl the support guru has stoped answering my emails, I assume he is overwhelmed with complaints. I had high hopes for this product I got great frustration.
