  • Aggressive Guard Dog ATTACKS His Owner. Working with a Ridgeback that has been attacking their owners. Stopping any dog from attacking is important but when they are a large guardian breed it is crucial to get under control.

I love the fact that you are willing to say this rather than what alot of trainers just accuse the dog of being the issue, I aspire to be educated enough to be able to work with aggressive dogs in the future, I am not yet experienced enough to be able to handle severe aggression but I'm learning 🥰

I'm a breeder and this is a powerful hunter not a guard dog. This breed is not meant for this kind of owner. It's disgusting and a waste of this amazing breeds talents. I'm flabbergasted as to why a breeder would push this dog on to these people. I would not sell these two people this dog. I would instead suggest a mastiff for it's intended purpose

    • @Kira-kg4kl
      @Kira-kg4kl ปีที่แล้ว +5

@belial rott completely agree but unfortunately in the pet trade a very large percentage of people get dogs that are not suited for the environment the owners place them in mentally of physically, most people want something laid back but that looks cool 😑
I deal with alot of reactive working breeds that just aren't given what they need by their handlers

Just like with kids, mislabeling can have awful consequences. Unlike with kids, in dogs it can lead to death... So glad they came to see you and are now able to deal with the issues. Seeing him run around with other dogs was so lovely. You've potentially saved a life.

Ridgebacks are very physical, vocal and mouthy when playing. When you see 2 Ridgebacks playing you would think they are fighting to death, but that is how they play. They are super nice dogs and I love them.

I have 2 RR (Rhodesian Ridgebacks). Man they play rough. Slways wonder why people say a RR is not for first time owners. My 12 year old son(then) basically raised our RR alone during Covid . Yes had dog classes for 6 weeks but consistancy I believed helped us so much. Ridgeback bit us as a puppy (3-6 months) but otherwise no reason not to have RR as first dog. When on leash be careful when people approach RR , let them approach him slowly. Magnificent guard dog , wont bite as a first action but will bay a stranger en they will know not to move closer. My RR will always check the area from the street as soon as I come out from my home and will run and give one big bark at the front gate when he goes into the garden after being in the house. Great channel

Hi Will, really good to see this. Despite all your warnings, I jumped in feet first into owning a Ridgeback as a first time dog owner. It has been challenging, but fun and I recognise both the dog’s and the owners’ behaviour and response from the clip. Your mantra of being a calm, consistent leader has really helped and I can’t recall how many of your training sessions I have watched. These dogs can be wilful and high energy when it comes to play and what I try and do is to bring that energy down with a quick sit and down when I see it getting too rough. I am not fully there yet, but willing to keep getting all the help I can. My dog Kukesha (Cookie for short) is a beautiful six months old male.

My ridgeback is 9 months old and will sometimes have a "crazy 5 mins" where she jumps up and wants to play aggressively. I stop all play immediately and calm her down when this happens, putting her in her crate if necessary. She needs to understand she doesn't get to choose when we play, and it's on my terms.

A ridgeback is a handfull for a first time owner: I know as this is exactly our situation with a nine month old female. We are finding our way, but we find it essential that she has daily exercise and mental stimulation, but also have joined a dog training club. It's so common that I get clients with a little puppy or a young dog and they say to me on the phone they need a session because the dog is "attacking" somebody or is "aggressive" with the kids and biting people. 10/10 times I get there and the dog is playing and the humans haven't been taught how to keep a lid on the intensity of that play.
Picked up early in their story that moment of, "Wait, what you're calling aggression and attacks isn't matching up with the size and power of this dog. If he intended to hurt you he'd have REALLY hurt you." Sure enough, who's just a big playful boy?

We got attacked from a young dog just like this, same breed. My dog usually ignores him, but of course couldn't then, and protected me and himself. I don't find anything wonderful about a dog that is such a threat and attacks others just out of nowhere....bleeding and bruises on people and dogs. I am sooo glad, you where able to help these ppl. and the dog. But I honestly wouldn't call him wonderful wonderful wonderful....for me very social, loyal, respectful calm dogs are wonderful. Hope the improved behaviour stays and the scared ppl stop saying nonsense about him being autistic. These dogs don't have enough bonderies and are undersocialized, thinking too highly of themselves, many times reflecting their owners, that use this breed (and others) as a symbol of status...so sad. Even I was hurt badly, I would never tell s.o. to put an animal down. You really saved the day ...and many others🤗

Ah, you are VERY good, Will. I wonder who suggested they get a Ridgeback as a first dog? So glad this couple came to you. The shame here is that you've had to use a prong collar. In the right hands, with the right training and UNDERSTANDING, a prong collar, as in this case cases, is warranted. Obviously it worked! And I'm SO HAPPY they're not going to use it as a walking collar or permanent collar as so many idiots do because they have NO IDEA or understanding of dog behaviour - idiots then cause a wonderful dog to become a fearful, reactive dog, usually poorly socialized and lacking confidence. PS: I'm a GSD owner - I LOVE them! Having lost my two last year (my huge male was an incredible, trustworthy Registered Therapy Dog and the other a small Czech-line female. It was devastating to lose them within 6 months of each other) I now have a 6 month beautiful male who I adore and who I can 'almost' trust completely, ' trust ' meaning that, with training and reinforcement, his behaviour will become predictable i.e. his responses will be the same to a command every time ( training, training, working and positive frequent socialization! with him!!) We're moving towards therapy work again. But as a teenager, we're into the 'testing' stage, also, so it IS important to be firm and consistent AND to be more stubborn than he is.........I'm lucky, however, I can use high value food treats as a reward!!! SO glad I've found your channel !! I'm learning much from you, too!!!!! Thank you!😊

That pouncing moment he had at the end is so part of the play when they get super exited. Sorry to hear that they are steriotyped as aggresive in the States. They are actually very good with unknown people if introduced well to them. Great guarddogs but wont bite easily , they will however indicate to the "enemy" without any doubt when they are not welcome. RR are truly sensitive but brave soldiers.Harsh correction dont work and is not needed.

But you didn’t show how you did it? I wanted to see how you fitted and used the prong collar as my 7 month old puppy does the same to me and my children. He run and grabs my hand or arms as he runs past. My arms are full of bruises and he’s scratched my hands with his teeth. I’ve told him to stop but he thinks it’s a game. I’ve bought a prong collar but not sure how to use it.

I take it, then, that they can never completely relax around that dog.
Living with that dog means management of him, every hour of every day.

As they continue training and the dog matures, it will become easier to manage. Consistency is key to developing good dog behavior.😊

Haha...that trainer said yell at the dog or use a water pistol?? My goodness, that trainer should be reported and banned from ever training another dog.

Unfortunate choice of breed for first timers. That said, this couple seem like they will handle it, and well.
What a handsome pup! They're gonna have a great time with him going forward.

I’ve grown up with Ridgebacks and can tell any potential owners please please do your research. A placid/ well mannered blood line is key.

I own 2 Ridgeback. An 80lb female and a 115 lb male. The KEY with owning a Ridgeback is.... You need to establish, in the very beginning, that YOU ARE THE ALPHA. You're the head of the pack. If you do that, they won't dare harm you because they are naturally DIE HARD LOYAL to their Alpha.
Let's say you have a break in and people are attacking you. Your Ridgeback will fight the attackers TO THE DEATH to protect you and they TEAM attackers. I have two for that reason. My dogs work in tandom with no training, to coordinate a defense.
For example: when you open my door, you hear a very loud and exaggerated barking, that almost sounds like a Hound, coming from the back of the house. What you don't hear is the male. Because you'll see him standing right there silently walking up. The female barks to distract you and make you think the dog is far away from you, meanwhile the male is sneaking up to assess the situation. If he lets out a bark, the female runs up in defense mode. If he's silent, the female will trot over in investigative mode.

Why can't people be happy with the lovely family mongrels we always had and were very happy with. They never need behavourists to sort them out.

What's this drop lead stuff all about? Have seen it a few different places. My dogs a nightmare with other dogs on lead but off lead he's a treat. He had a horrible history with leads so not sure if fixable?

    • @smileanais
      @smileanais ปีที่แล้ว

Drop lead is meant that the lead is still clipped to his collar but you aren't holding it. So it is dropped on the floor and trailing beside him. You can easily pick up/grab the lead when you need to gain control.

We've rescued a 3 year old rottweiler mix long time ago and he was doing the same thing. What we did, is we grabbed him by the neck and we put him down on the side, hold him by the neck with my knees on him until he calmed down. I don't know if it was the right thing to do but I figured that's what dogs do to each other.
We had to do this 3 times within a few days when it happened and he's never done it again for the next 15 years with us. He lived a long happy life ( 18,5 years ).
So this way worked for us. Maybe it wasn't a nice way to do it, but when you think about it, he wasn't nice either when he was jumping on us and biting us. So we matched it 😉
It's like people say put harness on your dog so you don't hurt the dog with beck collars. But it's OK for the dog to pull like crazy on the harness ripping our arms off. Come on ! 😀 😉
Love your videos ! 👌 Thank you !
Used to love Cesar Milan long way back. Now it's you and I go back to Cesar's videos too from time to time 😉

I'm not a Dog a dog trainer but an owner of 2 Lab Mixs , surely a question has to be asked " Why get a big Powerful Dog that has the potential to cause a lot of damage if the owners have never owned a Dog before ? "
Jackapoo . Frenchy , even a Chiwawa might be better breeds to start off with .
Its like buying a Honda Fireblade when you have never owned a Motorbike before

This is an amazing video. Please do not get this breed unless you have done a lot of research and understand the commitment it will require of you for the whole live of the dog. They are amazing but strong and the training never stops, every single day. They will test you to see if you forgot and if they can get away with it. Amazing independent thinkers and problem solvers so you need to be a team and understand how they think and process information so both find fulfillment in life.

@@Ryan-re1rs there are so many non trainers in the business. I saw Will with Tom Davis from America who has an excellent training service. In order to be a trainer you have to learn the entire range of opportunities you have to work with the dog.

As a behaviourist myself, I am currently working with a dog where the owners were given the advice to spray him in the face with a water pistol. This is a "positive" trainer....... Where do they get this motion from that this is a good idea? Its basically punching your dog in the face
