I interviewed and ate lunch with Jeff Tweedy in Montreal the day before this album was released as part of a radio show I hosted in Burlington, VT. Super nice guy.

Their fifth album 'A Ghost Is Born' is one of their best as well. they dive a lot deeper into the experimental rock sound, and the cover is a funny egg.

I listened and it's defenitly less experimental honestly aside from I am trying to break your hearts and war on war the song isn't super experimental sounding but those 2 tracks are defenitly experimental and there both followed by uplifting country rock songs that kinda felt Intetional after the 2 experimental songs you get the more traditional country rock songs great structuring

That "ringing" sound towards the beginning of "I Am Trying to Break Your Heart" is a Dremel tool on either a guitar string or piano string. Pure Jay Bennett.

I think the reason Heavy Metal Drummer's different from the rest could be because it's looking back at nostalgic and happy memories, unlike the others that seem to be about the present.

This has been my favorite album for 20 years, which means it's hard to recall a time when it wasn't providing constant oxygen in my life. But your video helped me remember what it was like to experience first contact with this album, and for that I'd like to thank you!

10:12 this album was actually originally meant to release on September 11th 2001 but got delayed to the next year

Really great work, noting the incredible and complex production that elevates these already phenomenal songs. And yes, this was made just before 9/11, and happened to be released after it. I got it from their website that fall/winter and it just crushed me. I was just out of the music-making/radio side at the time, but still tuned in to what was going on, and in the indie music world the situation with this album was really powerful, given the production problems and band issues. The coincidence of some of the songs feeling like perfect fits for the mood of the country hits hard even 20+ years later.

For more alt country stuff I’d greatly recommend “Magnolia Electric Co” by Songs; Ohia
Magnificent album. Very dark and sad. Was the last album released by Jason Molina’s Songs Ohia group before forming Magnolia Electric Co (band). If you listen I’d recommend also listening to the two extra songs The Big Game is on Every Night and Whip Poor Will

You nailed it with your comments and appreciation of my fave Wilco song, Pot Kettle Black. Second half is fantastic, and the outro still gives me chills some 20 years after I first listened to this song.

I've seen them twice. The first time was when this came out, and the second was last year. It was cool to hear how the live renditions of these changed over 20 years of touring.

First time checking out one of your videos, really enjoyed! You definitely have an aptitude to identify specific elements of the song that you enjoy or appreciate, and that’s not a skill all music reviewers have.
There is a great documentary about the creation of this album called “I am Trying to break your heart” directed by Sam Jones. Facilitating look into the creation process, and the troubles the band faces while releasing the record. Also as you mentioned regarding Jesus etc, all of this music was written before September 11th 2001.
I would recommend Whiskeytown as another awesome 90s Alt Country band. Their sophomore album Strangers Almanac is amazing, along with their final before breaking up Pneumonia. Have a great night brother

There’s a whole story to this album… the next album "a Ghost is Born" is their masterpiece

Great reaction! My favorite Wilco album is Summerteeth, which was the album right before Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. Sky Blue Sky is another great one. It's interesting you picked up on the country influences. They started off as "Alt-country" and got progressively more experimental over the years, with A Ghost is Born probably being the apex of this.

That's my favorite too. I binged that album one summer working graveyard shift and going through a bad breakup. It's a special album for me.

I really like the outro to poor places cause its like really sad just static over some heavily disorted lofi radio brodcast interruptions not interference there is a difference

Not related to this (great!) Wilco album, but allow me to propose another landmark post-punk LP released the same summer as Joy Division’s Unknown Pleasures:
    Drums & Wires by XTC
Well, actually, it’s sort of related, in that the guitar riff from "Kamera" always reminds me of XTC's "Life Begins at the Hop" (the non-album lead single for Drums & Wires).

I AM TRYING TO BREAK YOUR HEART:
No, he’s singing about authenticity and his desire to make the listening audience feel what he feels. The best tunes WILL break your heart. The song is about authenticity and transmission of art to those with the ears to hear

Interesting you take Reservations about him having access to many things but the girl he wants, I see it as an admittance about uncertainties over many things in his life, but his love for his wife is the one thing he has no doubt over
