In this video guitar lesson I will teach you how to play "For Whom The Bell Tolls" by Metallica in it's entirety note-for-note!
"For Whom The Bell Tolls" was released in 1984 on Metallica's second studio album Ride The Lightning. It quickly became a fan favorite just as it remains to this day.
The opening is dominated by bassist Cliff Burton's distorted and wah drenched chromatic tinged lick. However, you will find that same bass part is actually doubled by a guitar if you listen really closely to the original recording. So I will show you that opening riff as if you are doubling the bass line.
From there we arrive at some heavily palm muted power chord riffs that really usher in what this song is all about. Eventually those riffs lay back a bit and we get our first taste of the lead guitar work of Kirk Hammett. Hammett employs a steady stream of repeated sequences through most of his lead guitar work in "For Whom The Bell Tolls". Because those licks are so repetitive, those licks also make for some excellent alternate picking exercises.
In this For Whom the Bell Tolls guitar lesson I will show you all of the rhythm guitar riffs and chords as well as the lead guitar parts and harmony guitar parts.
The layout of "For Whom The Bell Tolls" is actually pretty straightforward and easy to follow. Metallica was just beginning to find their sound with their Ride The Lightning album and they would eventually start to write epic thrash metal classics that contained many different sections and strayed far from the conventional radio format. On Ride The Lightning, Metallica was just scratching the surface of what was yet to come on their albums Master of Puppets and And Justice For All.
So as Metallica goes, especially early Metallica, it doesn't get much easier than "For Whom The Bell Tolls" in terms of how difficult it is to play on the guitar. But regardless of it's difficulty level, it just goes to show you that no matter what, when you combine the genius of Cliff Burton and James Hetfield with Kirk Hammett's guitar wizardry, you are going to come away with an instant metal guitar classic every time.
Have Fun Guys!!

1:09 intro
2:46 1st riff
6:14 fill
7:09 2nd riff
9:41 interlude (11:30)
14:39 outro
Thank you🙏🙏
Thanks
Thanks
Thank
An interlude is a clean riff
i still dont know what ill do without this guy
You suck at guitar
True man 😂
Late to the part but I concur😊
The riff played at about 2:00 is actually a bass line. That's cliff burton distorting the bass in the intro
Yep. He also uses a wah pedal
Panzerknacker43 yeah he said that, but there is also a layered guitar harmonising with the bass
I'm totally unsure about that - i hear no guitar doubling it. I even found isolated tracks for everything in this song (the account holder who uploaded them has since been booted), and i feel certain it's all bass.
@@drink_your_tapwater It's only the bass. Look up any of the live performances. The riff itself was one of Cliff Burtons original samples before he joined Metallica and was also the very riff that made James Hetfield and Lars to seek him out. They honestly thought he was a guitarist because of the distortion and playing methods he used. The Cliff Em All video is the best example.
That's because cliff was the greatest bassist of all time.
FWTBT was tuned this way to match the sharpness of the bell throughout. Little fun fact of the day for ya
FWTBT?
For Whom the Bell Tolls
But, for whom does the bell actually Toll? That is the question.
@@msr35 It tolls for thee.
YoDawgoneeleven what’s a ftwhatever you said?
You're the one of the only teachers and the only cover of this song that address the harmony in the beginning. 10-9-8-7 during the x-0-2-2 power chord. It's SO heard on the song, how can almost everyone ignore it?
I'm not 100% sure but I think that line is played on bass, so often in guitar lessons they don't include it because it isn't technically a "guitar" riff (I personally like it played on guitar and totally agree with you)
Thats the bass so most people don’t bother teaching it on guitar. I think it’s cool to know on guitar anyway though
Also note, when doing the fast power chords riff, if you're finding hard to go from a 6th string power chord to a 5th string chord, you can use a power chord at the 7th fret on the 6th string (same notes)
This song was my first Metallica experience. I have never been the same. Best 5 minutes of my life
Awesome Lesson. I always look for your lesson first when trying to learn something new. Your Zeppelin stuff was great as well.
Christopher walmsley Thanks a bunch Christopher! I will keep them coming. :)
He flips us off at 12:25 😂
I always do that when doing power chords, but I’m ten
C-Tragic Marty music did that too ha

Love your lessons man, just found out I've been playing the intro bass melody wrong, the way you show is much better. awesome lessons
Always nails the tone perfectly. Man that's some great ear you have man.
You give the best lessons!
I've noticed the same tuning thing with Creeping Death.
Ian Kahui on the first two Metallica records, they played in A=447 instead of A=440.
I don't play guitar anymore (only ever played Acoustic) but I can watch these for days.
Excellent tutorial! Your breakdown at 10 mins is really helpful. I'll be playing the full thing in no time thanks to this!
If I did not find this channel I would not know this that and pretty much all my favorite riffs

Not sure if you are still putting lessons out there. But you have helped get back in the guitar game after a 20 year break.
Thank you so much Carl! Gonna play this one for my school talent show next week😏

+feelix simo thanks a lot feelix!
Can you please practice us with The God That Failed by Metallica, please? Thank you very much. You're making us great at guitar!!
12:39 That other guitar is .......hello darkness my old friend : (
Not to jump on the other comment but yeh, I too always come to this channel first when looking for a song. If you don’t have it, it makes me sad
That higher octave on the bass intro is actually Cliff playing a tapped harmonic, if you listen to it isolated they're actually panned so you can hear one more clearly if you isolate in one direction.
You are a great teacher and player ,you make it so easy to follow you
Thanks again for another awesome lesson! You're the man, Carl!
I love this tutorial!🤘🏼 is there any way you could maybe teach us a replication of the ending solo stuff that kirk plays in the background?
Thanks for the lesson carl, just learnt my favorite song of all time on guitar. \m/
at 40 I have decided to give guitar another shot. There are so many more tools available now then when I was a teen
Can you do a video on Hardwired for Metallica, please, you have the greatest lessons
he already did it bro, check it out!
Do turbo lover or breking the law
The best part on guitar is brought up an octave, those who know theory it’s just brought down a half step, On the frets not turning
the riff at 5:45 is so hard for me for some reason.
KILLER PLAYING! Me and my friends are gonna be playing this, it sounds alright. The only thing is, the sound of my amp don't make the high drags with the strings on the main riff? Help???
You should do all the rhythm parts to One by Metallica
Please do.
Hope things are going well as you recover your channel from being hacked!! I don't have enough friends to share your videos. But if they pop on my feed ill hit that like 💯
Awesome video, one of the best on TH-cam :)
Keep it up mah friend.
all done and dandy then i get to the interlude and I'm like "fuck i have only a week to get this down" 😂 great lesson though carl it's truly helpful

Could you please do domination by pantera or 5 minutes alone ? Thank you.
Carl you make everything look so easy. I’m like yeah, I can play this, and then proceed to mess up over and over. 😣 I can play NOTHING perfectly!
can you do the outro solo? like the one kirk does with his whammy bar while james plays the chords at the end?

Thanks for confirming it was the recording that was off not my guitar. That was driving me crazy!

Thanks
Thanx bro.. old video form but new lesson for me..
Thanks Carl!
Great lesson Carl! Your teaching is super clear and easy to follow. However it looks like you are flipping off the audience with your middle finger on the power chord chromatic part :-)
Do you know which amp settings
Nice break down
Hello! Nice lesson! Actually when I want to learn a song on the guitar I always select you as my teacher ^_^ can you please make a lesson for ?..and justice for all by Metallica? I found many lessons but they didn't help me alot
5:38 I've finally figured that out now I just got to train my muscle memory and then I can do it fast, then I'll will be able to play the whole song
5:38 idk why but I find it more comfortable to start with an upstroke
Omg I'm entering a world of pain with my fingers, but worth it!!!
Thank you very much Carl
thank you, man! you re the best!
It is tuned up to match the bells tone.
please do a tutorial on that ending solo.
You just need a waaah pedal and do a bending on (idk find out yourself 😂) and remease it….do that over and over…watch live versions
best power cords exercise ever :)
Please do Eye of the Beholder and Don't Thread on Me both by Metallica
I remember watching this last year when i just started out haha. Carl can you do The god that failed by Metallica?
Great lesson
5:37 I was off on that one trying it by ear your way is way more simple
Really Love your Videos.
Awesome job as usual Carl....thanks. ...love it. ...Mike
excellent !
Classic track great lesson thanks man
How about "Escape"?
Ahh Ride The Lightning! I listened to that album every day on the way to school during my senior year in high school. I will do any Metallica that is heavily requested. Probably will be a few more before Escape though just because of their popularity. :)
Out of curiosity, what's the next RTL number you haven't done as far as your fans are concerned (i.e. # of requests)?
Ktulu definitely followed closely by fight Fire with Fire.
Probably Co'K is a similar hurdle as you noted about Orion, just so damn long! Kinda cool how you can you can draw comparisons between tunes on the trifecta albums. (e.g. Ktulu, Orion and To Live Is To Die) being dramatic instrumentals which kinda go on forever. Then you have Fight Fire w/ Fire, Battery, and Blackened, all three being rippers with instrumental moments up front, and all three precede title tracks. Collect 'em All! Thanks for all your great work sir. Keep it up!
@@GuitarLessons365SongLessons The Day That Never Comes is another heavily requested number
good!
As a beginner, that solo lead riff looks tough. But sounds cool AF.
Do trapped under ice
Thank you so much!!
Best tutorial yet on fwtbt
that tone is so nice! what guitar are you using?
Rasmus Nyqvist This guitar is a Sterling by Music Man JP100
GuitarLessons365Song awesome, gotta get one :D
+GuitarLessons365Song the guitars weren't tuned slightly sharp they sound like that because of the bells in the beginning
I thought it was an Ibanez
The Boys Nah easy way to tell is the 4 tuners on the top and two on the bottom almost all music mans have those
The thing with the up-tuning, did they do that with fade to black too?
Sam Oppedisano I believe so. I may be wrong though
Please do the acoustic part of battery
Practicing this in a single coil strat
0-3-5
I absolutely love your lessons, especially for solos and leads... one thing I wish you would do though is use note and chord names more. For example, instead of saying “power chord based on the 2nd fret of the low E-string” just call it an F#5 or an F-sharp power chord. I think a lot of guitarists watching your vids would appreciate it. Just some constructive criticism.... but again, you rock & keep ‘em coming!
I cant get the speed. I will keep practicing that and hope in time to get it!
Why is guitar vid so detailed but a bass vid is the hardest thing to find
I had to learn this song on bass with crappy tutorials
What works nice for me is to watch these videos and try to figure out the bass lines. It helps with learning bass by ear etc.
Thanks you guys!
Yellow Bee You're welcome
It's honestly a pretty simple bass line, but that makes it more fun to put your own twist into it
Like I've seen rob play that little solo line with Kirk, or how cliff would just shred like crazy over the intro
thx for lesson :)
The beggining on the high e sounds a little high pitch compared to the recording. Is that because they have the bass doing the same thing? And would it be better to just play it on the d string
During the interlude and outro, which part does James play?
Excellent lesson!
yeap
