    I have also been in a position where when I saw a line of code the world suddenly seemed to fall over your head, but one day I saw a 2 hour video from Imphenzia about unity and somehow I felt calm + enjoy. And starting from there I found other channels and when I managed to make my first movement of the world that previously fell over my head helping me to fly into the sky, never give up keep trying and trying until I can, try never betray you.

    Great video. The coding/game dev journey is a long and slow one, but it can also be incredibly fun if you make it fun. My encouragement to new devs is of course don't give up, but also, set your dream games to the side for now and work on really small projects. Think of a small project, then slice that in half, then slice that half into another half, and that will be your next project to work on. Stay within a really tiny scope until you're skilled enough to work on larger projects. Otherwise, you risk burning out and falling into the unfinished projects hell that a lot of us went through. God bless.

    really loved this video, I'm trying to get started by making small games but my eyes are too big for my stomach, as it were. I keep thinking I cant make a game too simple or it wont be interesting but Cat Hat proved me wrong, i love it dearly. So i will try again to reduce my scope!

    • @saultoons
      @saultoons  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      YES Ronnie, I know exactly how you feel I still struggle with that when it comes to making games, I always over-scope my projects or add too much which dooms it to never be finished. BUT I heard a really great piece of advice which I think might help - when creating a game, we can get caught up in how much we could add or how in-depth we could make it, but instead it can be useful to try to think about how much you can take away and it still be fun - Super mario, for example spent months just developing the simple jumping mechanics, and they built an entire world out of that haha! Keep at it Ronnie, best of luck with it, feel free to share any game dev progress in the community discord I'd love to see

    I'm late, but I relate so much to how you learn and think! I've recently started learning code myself. Had some background knowledge I've picked up in my work as a UX/UI designer and web developer as a way to create, so luckily not starting entirely from scratch, but I definitly relate to seeing coding as a means to create!

    • @saultoons
      @saultoons  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's great Andrea! Cool that you've been able to get some related work as well, I'm sure that will help massively. I think if I was to look for more work I would try and do something similar, the problem solving side is just so much fun, kind of addicting too. It's been a while since this video and feel much more comfortable just thinking in code now with my programming projects, and all I really did was try and do small bits of consistent learning through time with projects, I'm always learning new things, best of luck with your learning! :D

    I've been feeling like hopeless garbage for the past few days. I desperately want to put my story and characters to a game but I've only ever tried and failed to write a simple script to destroy a game object when the game started. It truly has felt like jumping into the water and hoping to float but holding a barbell while I'm at it.
    It's late and I'm too exhausted tonight but I have a new hope for tomorrow that I can at least make some semblance of progress even in the smallest regard

    • @saultoons
      @saultoons  ปีที่แล้ว

      Start with the basics of programming with something like a course or Sololearn in your preferred language, but it's also important to be patient and recognise that learning and improvement takes time through consistent practise. When I made this video I was MUCH worse at programming, and now I am very confident with a lot of the tasks that come my way when developing my game, so much so that I barely need to use tutorials or anything anymore. It takes time, be kind to yourself, try and do 1-2 hours per day of learning and in 1 months time that will be a minimum of 30 hours more experience you will have! Think long term not short term :D Good luck! Join the discord community if you're struggling too people can help out there

      I think SoloLearn is good for learning some of the syntax and how things work, but really you should be building your own projects to get comfortable with the syntax. Can you elaborate more on this? :) Do you mean knowing a huge amount about the coding isnt required? :) Thanks

    • @LinChearReal
      @LinChearReal 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@saultoons Yeah. I'm not diminishing coding as it's required to an extent, but if you look at someone like Thomas Brush or David Wehle, they're self professed non-technical people who have built and shipped successful games. It's worth look at Thomas' channel to dive into his journey. I probably spent the better part of 10 years programming and never completing a game because I focused on the technical aspects way too much. It wasn't until I teamed up with artists and have the game dictate what I was developing that I got somewhere (landing a publishing deal and selling a game to a publisher). I would argue the game we sold was the artists' and I was merely there to fill in the blanks. As technical people we sometimes get distracted by some crazy new programming technique and forget that the game comes first.

    Hi Saultoons, I would like to eventually learn C# to become a C# web developer, but I know you have to get really good at OOP. I know OOP is heavily used for game development. At the moment I am learning HTML, CSS and JavaScript. But I figured soon once I get comfortable with JavaScript, I would like to get good with C# and then eventually learn the tools like .net to become a web developer. I was wondering. From your personal experience did it help you to become good at programming in C# by creating games you enjoyed? I figured I start off on the side learning C# by making simple games. while I improve my skills at JavaScript.
    Could you share any advice from your personal experience what you felt about programming improved your game development and what would you give advice to others if they were interested in creating a simple game as a side hobby just so they could improve their coding skills at C#, thanks for the excellent content.

      Hi William, I can't speak too much on the topic as my experience is very limited, though I have done some courses on HTML/CSS/JavaScript before as well, I learnt C# for unity, Python for simple app development/discord bots, and now GDScript for Godot game development which is very similar to Python. I found that once you understand the basics of one programming language I think it's very easy to pick up another one - mastering or being effective with it, it is a different story though, of course.
      I think if you practise coding for game development, then you will get better at coding for game development. I have gotten better at OOP by developing games, and I'm sure there are overlaps in web development and game development, but there are also a lot of specific techniques used just for game development that may not apply to web development, as I'm sure there are specifics for web development that aren't applicable in game development. My point here is that by splitting your focus you might be learning things that ultimately don't bring you closer to your goal of becoming a C# web developer.
      The way I think about it is the same as art, if you want to become good at pixel art, then you should do pixel art. If I do painting then I am still developing skills that overlap into pixel art, such as colour, form, shape, texture, etc - but I'm still missing out on gaining some experience with pixel art specific techniques that need to be developed to get better at pixel art.
      If your goal is to make web apps with C# then why not just start now? You have some learning experience in JavaScript, which is similar to C# in a lot of ways (from my limited experience) - Just starting making web applications with C# and .net - Follow some tutorials and make some basic applications - that is how you will improve at C# and .net, your first apps might not be super optimised or follow all the best principles, but you will learn a lot by finishing small projects and you'll learn best practises and how to apply OOP along the way - You could do a little game on the side to help learn some C# and OOP, I'm sure it will be beneficial in a lot of ways, if you learn better by doing that then go for it, but just be wary that not all of it may apply directly to your ultimate goal of developing web applications with C# and .net.
      For me personally, whenever I am learning something new, I have always found focus to be the key in effective learning, that may or may not be the same for you.

      @@saultoons Pretty good advice, thank you. I am working on the Odin Project for being a web developer at this very moment. Your the second person who has told me to start right away with C# for web development and it makes perfect sense and the advice is much appreciated. It makes me think carefully of my options. But I slept on it during the night and came to the conclusion since in order to become a C# web developer you still need HTML, CSS and JavaScript I will finish the Odin Project which is JavaScript, HTML and CSS focused. Afterwards I will focus on C# and that ecosystem. I figured by that time I will have enough research on the topic to enable me to find good courses and create a reasonably good syllabus to have an effective course of learning. Thank you so much for sharing your perspective Saultoons and I plan to continue to watch your videos. Also, I will watch your videos because I DO want to create a video game with C# and either Unity or Godot, not sure yet.

      I was in the same situation as you! It really doesn't require any maths knowledge at all. And if you do come across something that involves maths, (vectors were the closest I've come across so far), then don't fear because there are so many resources online to get answers that you need. Any issue you have, the chances are that someone has already had that problem, so just google it :D I'd recommend just trying out Solo Learn app to learn the basics (it's pretty wordy and can be complicated but just keep repeating and re-reading sections if you have to) do 1 hour every day, supplemented with an easy to follow youtube series and maybe your first beginner project, and soon you will get the hang of it. ANYONE can learn it, no matter what background you're from, it just takes time and dedication. 1 hour every day and you will get it :) Feel free to join the discord too, we have lots of people who can help if you get stuck on something or have any questions :D

      I noticed people either start really simple to get used to things or they pick their dream project and work on that for years and learn as they go. Gamedevhq tutorials on youtube/udemy were definitely the best for helping me understanding C# for Unity, a bit of sololearn on the side for syntax stuff and you’ll be doing well in no time. If you’re fresh, maybe pick a udemy course or youtube series that looks good, and so 1-2 hours every day of that, making sure you understand everything in the lesson. After a couple of weeks you’ll be sorted, consistency with learning definitely better than trying to smash it all out because theres so much! 🤣 if you need any help we’ve got a discord which has a game dev section, few people there who use unity

      @saultoons  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      First you have to change your mindset, look at your language. ‘I can’t do this, I can’t do that’… Speak more positively about yourself. You can do it. Every single person starts with 0 experience and must fail over and over again until they become competent at something, and even then they will fail some more, failure and not knowing is good because it means you can learn and grow. You have to accept that and once you do, you have a growth mindset, which will take you very far, look into it! There’s only one very simple thing you need to to improve at any skill… dedicate time to it!!! Spend 2 hours a day learning programming or art or both, in 1 month you will be around 60 hours more experienced!!!!!!! 60 hours is a lot of learning time! It won’t happen overnight but over a long time through consistent progress. Forget about the past and start today. Start now. There is always an opportunity. Good luck and let me know how you get on :)
