    I love this knife. My father still has my grandfather´s and one day I will own and keep it. It always reminds me of one of the greatest people in the world to me. Beautiful! Greetings from Germany

      DansAmmo dot com has these babies in unissued condition, 39.99 shipped to your door.
      Other than Dan, I haven't seen these for sale since I bought one for 20 bucks at an Army/Navy Surplus store in Forest Park, GA in 1988.

    Nick you need to show step by step restoration on your projects. Someday (in the far future) people will need to restore your restoration so it can be enjoyed for another 100 years!

    Fantastic! I would have loved to see a couple extra steps. If only you could get a neighbor's kid to hold the camera to catch you fashioning the spring or doing the welds.

    Good Day. I have another of these Knives in for replacement of the other Spring. I will look into your earlier suggestion to see if it may apply to this situation.
    Thanks.

    that new spring has a nice satisfying snap to it. I don't think I could have brought myself to weld that sucker tho.

  • @1928a1tommy
    @1928a1tommy  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you mean how did they weld without any heat? They "micro" welded it. They actually sit at microscopes and weld. The welding rod looks like Silver colored thread. You can see how little heat they generated. It was the only way to re-attach that spring without tearing the whole knife down. Also, too much heat would ruin the tempering that I just had done to the spring. Ya gotta love Technology.
    Take care..............Nick.

      Good Day. I've done yet another one but didn't Film it. I've been charging a flat Cost of $300.00 plus Shipping. That amount is OK for me as I have Expenses such as having a new Spring made, all of the HeatTreating, plus the Laser Welding. Still leaves me some Money for my Labor. All Work Garranteed. Contact me if interested. Thanks.

    Good day.
    I'm sorry but my ignorance of Knife construction leaves me at a loss. I don't know what a Bolster Head or even a Lanyard Spring is.
    I was under the impression that those pins holding the broken spring could only be accessed or replaced by removing the grips. I was worried about damaging any more than I had to.
    Thanks for the info. If I get another in for repair, I'll look into your suggestion.
    Take care.

    One day I'll film a few minutes showing the Tig welders using their Micro welders. If you look at my video about the 101st. Airborne Garand, you can see good examples of their work.
    Glad you're enjoying these vids.

    I don't claim to be the best at anything but I do try to be fussy. I always garrantee my workmanship. Not only did the Customer pay me but now I'm restoring his 1939 German Mauser rifle, so I guess I've got him fooled!
    Take care.

    If you would have pressed out the two Pins holding the Bolster Head together you could have taken it apart and replaced the Pins holding the Laynard Spring in place. instead of Tig welding the spring. Great Book on these Knives "Luftwaffe Gravity knife" Mack A. Pattarozzi

    Very Nice work, what would this repair cost ? i have the release spring broken.

  • @1928a1tommy
    @1928a1tommy  11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Good Day.
    To be Honest, I know nothing about the Value of these Knives. I know that whenever something gets "Restored or Repaired" it usually loses some Value, but in the case of a Knife that is broken, I would think that a nice clean Repair that makes the Knife operational would only help it's Value.
    This Repair cost the Customer $300.00 Total, inc. supplying the Steel, making the Spring, etc.
    It took more than a Day, and I basically charge $300.00 a Day. 6 Hours @ $50/Hr. Fair?
    Thanks.

    How the heck did they make those spots/rivets with out damaging the scales ????

  • @1928a1tommy
    @1928a1tommy  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    This particular repair was $300.00 inc. the new made spring.
    I would think that your repair cost would be in that ball park.
    Take care.

  • @1928a1tommy
    @1928a1tommy  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I usually stick to my estimated repair Cost, unless something significant slowed me down to where I have to charge more.
    I actually have NOT started on the 2nd Knife. I was hoping this Week but a couple of Gun Restorations have delayed me starting on any new Jobs. I'll finally be on the Knife next Week.
    So, technically I've only done 1 Knife. I'm in no way experienced enough yet to give a Firm Price. Who knows what problems I may find.
    I try to be Fair in my Pricing.
    Thanks.

    Hello, I have a German Gravity knife that was a bring back from WW11. It also has a broken spring but it is at the other end where the trigger is. I have sent this knife to 5 other people that said they could repair it and they all charged me and said they can't fix it. I just saw your video and know that you could be the man to fix this for me.
    How can I get this to you?
    Thank you

    Hi, just watched your video on spring repair for this paratrooper gravity knife. I have one with a broken spring but all chrome perfect and blade is in excellent shape. I'd like to sell it so that I can buy books for school. Know of any interested collector's whom I can contact?

    Guess that'd be a laser weld ? Be a good guy indeed who could get TIG down those holes and fuse at the bottom.

    • @1928a1tommy
      @1928a1tommy  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes sir! All our fine-detail welding is laser welding.

    • @1928a1tommy
      @1928a1tommy  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, we use a Laser Welder for another reason as well. There's no other type of Welding that would generate that small amount of Heat so that the Wooden Grips don't scorch. We even repaired one with Plastic Grips and they weren't damaged either. Have 2 more here right now and 2 more enroute. Been a busy Year repairing these Knives. We enjoy doing them. Thanks.

      I mistakenly called that Welding "TIG" but it's actually Laser Weld. Excuse my stupidity.
