Nissan eNV200 Review

  • Today in my lunch break I had the chance to test out Nissans E-NV200. Looking at the facts and figures I originally wasn't optimistic about the Nissan's usability, how wrong I was. Here's what I thought.

    Great for local deliveries but sadly not much cop for 400 mile days. A big thumbs up to Nissan for starting the ball rolling !

      Paul Harrison there's a chap who uses one of these daily for national deliveries. I imagine it's hard work but make it a much more profitable business is you can get cheap charging.

      Yeah, I'm looking to replace my old VW T5 but I won't do it until there's an e-NV200 like thing with 60kWh. Until then I only use the T5 ~2-3 times a year anyway… (I do crazy stuff with the Model S instead because driving a Diesel is just hnnnngggg)

    Been thinking about trading my little petrol car for an NV200 camper van as both holiday wagon and my everyday transport now that I'm retired. Decided to wait until they fit a bigger battery on the eNV200, and as you say 60 KWh sounds about right. Found your video the day after I came to that conclusion, so nice to know that I'm on the same wavelength as more experienced EVers!

    • @Jamesandkate
      @Jamesandkate  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's true, you're absolutely spot on. The problem we have is, a 60 would kill off huge chunks of the van market be it a camper, panel van or just a commuter 6/7 seater and thats not factoring in the losses in servicing and the losses to the oil industry. The only way thats going to happen is with Tesla pushing the boundaries and forcing the manufacturers. The good news is, it's happening and pretty quickly so fingers crossed you won't have to wait too long :-)

      That being said the company that brings out the light van EV that will do, what for many is, "that once or twice a month trip across the next county and back" without a recharge, will have the market to themselves!

      James I loved this review and j agree with what you say.
      Seeing as we are over a year on now have you heard anything about the eNV getting a 60kh battery. I Really want the combi version but I need the bigger battery for weekend camping trips.
      Thanks James

    Nice review, James. There are two companies already doing camper van versions. Like you say, this van will be great once it has more range. I'll be happy when it hits a reliable 120 miles to a charge.

    Great review James. Diesel will have to banned soon surely. Until then I really dont think anybody gives a toss about what they chuck out the back of their cars. If the exhaust pipe could be made to exit from the middle of the steering wheel things would change though.

    • @Jamesandkate
      @Jamesandkate  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      mdad hdad right Genuinely I don't think people understand how bad it is. Modern diesel particulates are so small, forget breathing them in, you can absorb them through your skin, It's changing though, slowly. Mr Khan has imposed a new levy on the congestion charge for older Diesels and I tell everyone how bad they are.

  • @robertbidochon7949
    @robertbidochon7949 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    this is perfect for city van dwellers: no maintenance (except tires and maybe breaks-but the motor can do regenerative breaking so maybe no break change for a long long time) and no clogged filters due to small trips and lots of starts and stops. I love the silence too and the massive torque on tap. and you can recharge it with pv panels - perfection when it will be mainstream so the spear parts will be easily available! i can't wait

    totally get it . I drove it once and its just great. Range improvement needed definitely, 40Kw maybe not to bad but they seem to have problems with battery cooling. But otherwise for a wan its just great.
    Unfortunately I couldn't afford one so I took Toyota town ace, completely regret it. If I ever by Env 200 Ill use town ace just to keep rubbish in it.
    Thank you for review. Totally understand your enthusiasm.

    Very useful review (love your channel). Pretty sure my next vehicle once the Skoda Roomster finally packs up might well be an E-NV200 5 seat: just hoping I can hold out until the rumoured '19 spec Leaf innards make it into one :D
    I'm pretty sure I'll develop a bad case of range anxiety - primary use for the Roomster is shipping most of three people's kit for a gigging band (including full drums and keys rigs, hoping they'd fit in the E-NV!), and being as how we work day jobs, trying to fit a charging cycle at venues is probably not gonna happen, so we'd be kind of hoping for reliably > 100 miles range.

  • @chrisjarvis9774
    @chrisjarvis9774 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    what a fantastic upbeat review, yes I agree 30Kwh ought to be an option and even better 60kwh. Also the combi, which I have driven is a bit van-esque but plushed up a bit it would be a contender to the Ford Galaxy. A niche missing from EVs IMHO. BTW Your reviews are exemplary. As a suggestion, ... Something people seldom consider is the speed of home charging 16A vs 32A. I inadvertently and fortunately bought a 32A Leaf it's not 30Kwh but it charges so fast at home I can pop out and do another 30 mile trip after a quick cup tea. So I drive 40 miles to/from work, heating full on. Then I grab my guitar and play music in the pub 30 to 40 miles round trip heating on, just 45 minutes after I get home.Almost as good as 30kwh for usages. Nissan still sell 16A cars which is stiffling usability. Great review thank you.

    Definitely taken by this, weren't you! 😀
    Must admit, it does look great. I met a bloke who had one a couple of years ago while charging my LEAF at Cherwell. He ran a pet food company and absolutely loved the van too. I think if I needed a van and I were doing local work or longer routes where I could leave it charging at the destination throughout the day, it'd definitely be first choice.

    • @Jamesandkate
      @Jamesandkate  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think, fingers crossed John, the new 60kWh battery pack from the upcoming Leaf could;d make it's way in to this van, that would be awesome and have fantastic usability.

  • @craigix
    @craigix 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The ENV200 is actually slightly faster to 60 than the Leaf (it takes 7.5 seconds), I assume due to the gear set up it also has a lower top speed which seems to confirm this. It does really need a bigger battery though.

    • @Jamesandkate
      @Jamesandkate  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      craigix cheers for the heads up. Yes a 60 would be nice. I'm pondering on buying an old Leaf battery and converting one 😊

    • @craigix
      @craigix 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Mike Schooling can do the job for you but it's £6k (inc the battery). Means you can then only carry half a ton though. However because the ENV has a spare wheel and loads of space under it the second battery does not take up any space. So Nissan obviously thought about offering a second battery under there but didn't bother (yet).

    • @Jamesandkate
      @Jamesandkate  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thats an interesting point, but actually most vans run at full capacity for less than 10% of their life cycle. What battery 24/30? is it just a case of bolting the new cells in parallel? How does the BMS cope with this???

    • @vladzis
      @vladzis 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      James and Kate jehu garcia (check TH-cam) explained why all EVWest conversions not using BMS. My first EV (Aixam Mega City, 2009) didn't have BMS as well, but I still managed to cover more than 11k miles in 11 months :) BMS would cope without worry :)

  • @ableac

    The extra weight of a 60kwh battery would either reduce the payload capacity or more likely take this out of the car derived van category, thus affecting what speed you can legally! drive it at.

    I work with a Social Landlord in North West England, in our last fleet update we took on one Peugeot Partner Electric to test for our Estate Services Team, so far it is going well and we may extend the fleet this way. Also we are looking to using a mobile solar platform to power equipment.

    • @Jamesandkate
      @Jamesandkate  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Buzzard Brother That sounds amazing. Mobile solar is becoming popular too, and when you add up the fuel saving for a generator it's viable over a decent period 👍🏻

    • @buzzardbrother1911
      @buzzardbrother1911 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is a system developed in Denmark that is a trailer with an iKube solar panel unit that can charge up electrical gardening equipment, it can even charge your Tesla. Hopefully we can invest in this technology for our Environmental Services Team.

    • @Jamesandkate
      @Jamesandkate  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Buzzard Brother I have seen this previously. Now PV has jumped forward a gear it seems even more viable. Our panels are rated at 250w each. My friend has a newer type, slightly smaller and rated at 330w each.

  • @clarew281

    thanks for the review James - good to hear this is good to drive. Nissan Leicester have got a combi on show and the boot is huge, it could replace our SUV and camping trailer for load space for sure. Nissan, why why why is there no heat pump or bigger battery yet. Taking the 24kwh fully loaded with camping kit and family you would have to stop at every services for a rapid just in case the next services chargers were offline...Wonder if they would offer battery upgrades like Renault and BMW in the ENV - got to be room under there for a second 24kwh pack...

    • @Jamesandkate
      @Jamesandkate  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Clare W spot on, there's acres of space, easily enough for a 60 kWh pack. That would make for an excellent vehicle 👍🏻

  • @willdatsun
    @willdatsun 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    These are quick, roomy, with good steering, and turning circle, but are loud, harsh, (even with the incredibly drummy bulkhead removed), bouncy and have awful hard flat seats, unergonomic dash and switches, irritating operating system, poor seat /steering wheel heaters and reversing camera (gimmicks) and many more badly thought out design and material choices such as the fuzzy felt carpet, which should have been a rubber mat. Even the factory optional mats don't cover the carpet where it needs protecting. Not saying don't buy one, every ICE changed for an EV is a good thing, but come on Nissan, put a bit more thought into the next version please. Just give us proper ignition switch too, that works in cold weather not just summer, its a van for goodness sake.

I think your correct about the 60 kWh, businesses rule with the pocket and not heart which would arrise to a massive uptake in these vans. maybe they are going to put the 41kwh battery from the Zoe and that's why no 30kwh yet. Just a thought.

      Rollin thunda, there is a conversion company in California that will take any gas car you give them and make it an EV. My comment was directed at Nissan, not a one-off conversion. The van version of the Leaf SURELY has a place to put some more batteries in, giving the range.

    BTW, I wish a country would adopt the Tesla charging standard, even if it's just the port. It takes AC as well as DC Fast Charging. It would solve all the compatibility issues between J1772, Chademo and CCS.

      Whoa, Nelly! Why would Tesla trade their Tesla port for one that's 3x the size and can't pass as much voltage? Are you talking about Tesla making a CCS adapter, like the Chademo adapter?

    • @Jamesandkate
      @Jamesandkate  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe that CCS is now to be the industry standard as a port not an adaptor. I did ponder this when looking at the CCS plug compared to a supercharger, it's massive. Also, you have to have a rather large port and cover for a CCS.... who knows what they're thinking :-/

      A chap we know has one and apparently fully loaded only loses 8-10 miles of the range, so hopefully it's not that bad. As a camper, sorted with a 60 in it.

      realistically what range can you achieve...????

    • @vladzis
      @vladzis 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      James and Kate all depends mainly on wind and terrain. I was stressed with 800kg+ load when been going on M1, from Leicester Forest East, planned to stop in Nottingham Belfry hotel for top up, but had tailwind, so managed to reach Doncaster Lakeside. Average speed was 60mph. However on A roads with careful driving and that kind of load, 60-65miles is really achievable. It takes way more energy to start, but once you started, energy consumption is more or less very similar to near empty van, regen is really increased because of inertia. Its hard to keep the same speed (mine doesn't have cruise control), but I'm applying accelerator gently, so it's OK. Maybe that would explain more: I've left Corby with that 800kg+ load with 50%, arrived to Leicester Forest East both times with 12% left, I've been taking the route via Leicester, not A14/M1

    How do you know that 60s? alloy body galvanized chassis Landrover was a diesel, petrol vehicles that need a rebore & new rings have same symptoms? Diesel Gate was about N2O created by high compression very hot burning of fuel in a diesel engine which gives it higher efficiency than petrol, but also combines N and O2 in air to make oxides of N including N2O. N2O is a catalyst in destruction of Ozone, & a greenhouse gas, but is unlikely to make it to those heights in the atmosphere. Concorde engines at cruise had hot spots which produced copious quantities of N2O from the air passing through them. My boss had to show the results of a model of the upper atmosphere I wrote with Sunspots V Concord to the USA EPA to get the OK to fly Concorde! USA was scared of competition from diesel sipping European cars which was negatively impacting sales of their profitable heavy gas guzzling SUVs so they pulled a swifty on VW who should have given them the finger and withdrawn their cars from the USA which is only a 330 million market compared to the rest of the World's 7 billion. Trouble is BMW has a very profitable plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina (they import the engines from Germany) which exports more cars from the USA than any US car manufacturer!

    Actually, you do get speed difference at petrol station. Diesel pump for trucks is usually twice the speed compared to car pump. Though, you can't put truck pistol into a car - it has larger diameter.

      I know that there is an aftermarket towbar available in the US but the model S is not type approved in Europe. There is also the issue of the electric connections for the lights etc. Do let me know how you get on.

      @Jamesandkate  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Chris. The tow bar would only be for lightweight towing but fortunately we have a company locally called Brink who manufacture tow bars, and I believe will make customs for a price. That said, I've got a welder, I may make my own. The wiring is no issue. Just need to tap in to the CAN network and it's pretty straight forward. The wiring can be accessed easily as you can strip the boot in under 5 mins :-)

    You can forget this car with the Charghing system : Typ1 and Chademo The Car is not usable, because both types are not a europe standard and Typ1 is slow as hell. Nissan uses not Typ2 which would load the car in 1 hour in whole europe. Type2 is the standard in europe. NIssan is sleeping in this charging sector.

    • @Jamesandkate
      @Jamesandkate  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      matze, type 1 is slow but is predominantly for home use. Luckily for us in the U.K. We have CHAdeMO everywhere, its currently the most available charger by a long way so the van is still usable. In future someone will make an adapter to keep this viable.

    • @matze1856
      @matze1856 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chademo Chargingstations are to expensive to build in many countries , Type 2 will be the standard with 22KW . My E-NV200 was not usable and i gave it away. The Range is a mess. If Nissan put no Type 2 plug in their cars, they will be passed very soon. The e-mobilty will go back to DIESEL ! I drive Diesel again and i will drive it as long as possible. E-Mobility will loose against Diesel.

      matze you guys in europe with your 25a 3 phase at home have advantages, as does our 100a single phase. They both also have disadvantages. This is a great van for the uk with 6.6kw single phase charger and chademo.

    Very amusing but totally out of touch with the needs of a small business. Don't need fast - need range. 13k for a used van. Try starting a small business and tell me that's peanuts. I'd love an electric van. I'm an electrcian so it's a promotional tool but get the OLEV off our case.

    Think Nissan e-NV200! think professional procrastinators!! You could not drag your heals any harder if you tried! a Great van but needs a proper heat pump heater and 60 kWh battery! Been waiting since March 2015!! 2 Years.
    I have a 30 kWh leaf instead of the e-NV200 that I really wanted but in winter with brisk driving and lots of hills! I can get 65 miles from 100% in leaf in winter!! Van was 50 miles :0( so I have to run a diesel Berlingo for now! but only covered 29K in 4 years with van! Over 20K in 11 months in leaf :0)
    Just waiting for Nissan to finally get a bigger battery in the e-NV200 and i will only be driving that.

      One thing no one including you have mentioned is Regen!! :) I found it has more regen that the leaf :) Just flicking the lever across to engage and back to disengage is so much quicker and fun when pushing on! I did 450 miles on my test and had 200+ kgs in the back which helps even more with the regen! But you only had the van for 30 mins but (when you buy) yours you will be well pleased ;) btw don't forget about Jonathan eco-cars.net see if he can do a deal for you.

    • @Jamesandkate
      @Jamesandkate  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      James, you won't believe it, i edited that out. I went on and on about the increased regen but couldn't decide if it was due to the van being empty of it was a software increase. I was however impressed by the increase. I've made contact with John via text this evening :-)
