Big Don is truly MAGNIFICENT and he DOES LOVE HIS DADDY!!! I just love watching you and Puppy Girl with your dogs and they ALL love you! Thanks for the informative video for those who have new puppies. By the way, I love your hair, German Shepherd Man. Keep doing what you are doing for chemicals are toxic in the long run. With my shepherd Ishi 1 ear was floppy at 6 months and I added the chicken feed/whole eggs to his diet. I also decided to glue a foam ear insert into the ear and learned some stuff in the process that may be helpful to others. From what I understand the insert glued in creates irritation and excess blood flow, the excess blood helps grow the cartilage. I found out Tear Mender glue for leather and fabric work does amazing and is non toxic/safe. They even have an page on the company website dedicated to use on dogs ears with shepherds pictured. Best glue there is for anyone considering using an insert method to help the process along.

Beautiful German Shepherd. My favorite breed. Smart, loyal, devoted, easy to train. A long as you establish when they are puppies that you are the dominate one (with love) you will have a faithful companion for the rest of their lives. They were always loving but would give their lives to protect us all. It is second nature for them to be protective. Loving with my son and all his cousins when they were kids. I have had the honor of having 4 German Shepherd dogs over the years. I loved them all and I miss each of them to this day. Wish I could have another one but I no longer have a house with a fenced in yard.
Please keep the breed strong and healthy.

Hi German Shepherd Man, I looooooooooooved it when Big Don gently laid his ears back whenever he heard your voice. Big Don definitely loves you so much! You are definitely right. NOT all German Shepherds are gentle. I think Big Don is the of the few exceptions I know of a gentle German Shepherd. My neighbor's German Shepherd who attacked my dog was anything BUT gentle, it was borderline LEATHAL, the dog "sent" me to the ER for the whole evening. Yes, I do believe that you know your dogs so well. Big Don was like "Hey Dad, what is that on the ground? Oh, it's just Dad's glasses. Dad, Dad, Dad, I loooooooooooooove you so much!".

My first GSD’s ears never stood up straight unless she heard something interesting. But otherwise, they were mostly down.
Aside from being a curiosity (wondering if she was a mix rather than a pure bred GSD), I didn’t care. I loved her with all my heart. I still miss her, thirty five years later.

It's everybody's favourite pics of shepherd pups when their ears first go up and they're all floppy and all over the place, I just love them! He is a big darlin 😍🐶😍🐶reminds me of my boy Kashmir, miss him every day. He was just a big boy, not heavy boned, he was just big! Everything that I bought for him had to fit a great dane but he was natured like Big Don. So soft and loving, Valentine is extremely loving but she's a shepherd and a half! Best bit, she's tiny, half Kashmirs size, wee petite paws and face and she's a tyrant 😂😂😂😂. It's her job to protect me, and she does it very well!

Dear GSM, well my girl's one ear never did stand completely. I think I was too late to try any of these tricks, even though I did buy some chicken feed and kept up with the egg shell/egg; just that she was already close to a year old. She's 2.5 now, and I love her just the same; it makes her look slightly goofy which suits her character. She's always looking up, with the whites of her eyes showing at the bottom and a stuffed Snoopy in her mouth and she's such a loving, sweet girl! Others are not so accepting of imperfect ears, so I'm definitely going to try your tricks earlier if I have any that have ear issues in the future. Thanks for the advice, LOVE your channel and the love you have for your babies!

Bone Broth is full of collagen. I wonder if that would work as it is so good for dogs tummies, bones, ligaments etc. Dr Karen Becker shows how to make it on her channel. It was used back in the 1800's by Florence Nightingale to heal humans so its nothing new. Plus dogs love it as its made from raw bones simmered for 24 hours then strained so no bits of cooked bone is left. Also great for dogs getting over upset tummies. Big Don is a lovely temperament. Love that ,like me, you stay open to learning new things. Thanks to all at GSM Land : )

I'll be retiring in about 18 months and will be looking for a puppy just like Big Don. Glad to be able to see the difference from the working line and I'm thinking a nice big-boned gentle guy will enjoy a life with us in rural Maine. My wife was wondering if, should we encounter a bear or coyotes on a hiking trail ... a gentler German shepherd would offer protection. I assured her that our future guy would die to protect his pack. Thanks for another great and informative video.

great video. Apparently raw chicken feet contain decent amounts of collagen. Due to also being a great source of glucosamine and chondroitin raw chicken feet are great for our dogs joints and bones. Raw chicken feet are also a great toothbrush and very safe for the dogs o chew on and eat. I also heard that if our puppies have access to lots of chewies that all that chewing will help make those ears rise. Big Don is absolutely stunning.

Hello! I have a question. About a month ago we got out German Shepherd pup and he’s now 14 weeks old today. He’s like your GSD shown in the video, very big boned but has medium to long length fur. At about 11 weeks one of his ears was up completely straight and perfect and his other one was pretty stubborn but was also on its way up. A few days ago his ‘good’ ear went back down, and to now as floppy as a labradors ear. The other one is currently still fine, but my question is, how much chicken feed do you put in their food and what type? And do you think it will come back up at some point? Thanks!

I was not talking, specifically, so much foxes, it was more a comparative example; both dogs and foxes experience hormonal and chemical changes, as a product of selective breeding and domestication, resulting in physical changes, specifically floppy ears and change of pigmemt.
Artificially selecting larger products of the breed could still be a contributing factor. Larger genetic examples may experience higher rates of physical changes, due to artificial selective breeding, causing new genetic make-up, with hormonal and chemical changes, resulting in a physical change in the ears.
A better way to explain it would be the Belyaev's experiment.

Hi GSM. Does this technique pretty much only apply to pure breeds? My Cairo is 4 months and half his family tree is pure breed gsd, all the way back to the great grands (I did a dna test). One of his parents is a gsd family dog who matted with a mixed stray who’s lineage consisted of boxer, Shetland sheepdog and golden retriever. Of course the family did not want to keep the puppies, they called it an “accidental litter” and turned them over to a shelter. I adopted my Cairo at 11 weeks (his whole litter got adopted btw). He gets complimented on his coat literally every time we’re out walking lol ppl ask if he’s a gsd. I tell them shepherd mix. The only difference in his appearance is his ears. They don’t stand, they just flop forward. I would love it if they did, but at 4 months now I’m wondering if it’s late enough in the game to give up on that hope. Thanks for your feedback, I’ve been watching your videos since before I adopted him :)

Okay so I've got mixed emotions. I have 11 month old siblings from my female sable, one has the lighter build with very thick rigid ears that have been up since about 8 weeks old and never went back down (like her mama.) Her sister is bigger boned and took after more of the show line with sloped back, her ears are also much softer, they are not as rigid, and unless she's alert, her right one will tip to the outside about halfway up the ear. I have been putting half a scoop of collagen powder from Swanson Vitamins in her food daily to try to 'toughen' them up, and they do get at least half an eggshell daily. Besides the Knox gelatin and chicken feed you've recommended, is there anything else I should be doing at this time or is it too late since she's 11 months old? (I've just let her be, no taping or anything, and just love her as she is, so it's okay either way.)

@Billy Bob America i shared my life with five german shepherds over the last 40 years. each time i had to have go of one of them i was devasteted. my view of what happens once i cross the bridge or "the blue tunnel" myself is that all my furry companions are waiting for me and we get a job assigned to guard the perimeter of paradise against whatever evil insurgents are lurging around. sounds good and not less convincing than what some preachers are making us to believe. but i hope i can still enjoy many years with my current german shepherd haki, a longhaired alsation from the black forrest and a splendid companion for all sorts of outdoor adventures here in switzerland. cheerio!
