I wish they'd add 16:9 output option to these apps like when doing wireless casting. My current Galaxy A51 is not only 21:9, but when rotated sideways shrinks a little bit on the left to avoid showing the hole-punch camera, which looks fine on it's own screen, but casts that to the adapter too. So, I end up with not just the bars on top and bottom, but a bar and rounded corners on left. I don't really want to root my phone either.
My Samsung Note 9 (which also supports Dex) but if I shared my screen or mirrored my screen via wireless or HDMI it would give me the option to do the native phone ratio or 16:9 and it would redraw the phone's screen in 16:9 on both devices.
@@djw1091994 Sadly no Dex or native video out on the A series so far, so switching to 16:9 has to be done via the software doing the wired link to the device, unfortunately.
My Note 8 has the same problem. As DEX was broken for the Note 8 (cannot exit any windows with a mouse by clicking the "X" in the corner of the window), I had to use screen mirror, which cannot support 16.9 aspect ratio....
Casting is basically mirroring, so it shows the same exact resolution or aspect ratio as the smartphone screen. Desktop Mode feature is the only way to get custom resolution or aspect ratio.
If you do into the display options the full screen apps or something you can force apps to use the whole display but depending on the app they may or may not be something you can't tap at all
This method is super working but i dont recommended using usb c to a adapter instead use usb c hub with pd to make it safe btw im using wavlink usb 3.0 displaylink adapter for around 7 months now and using it both of my red note 9s and currently my xiaomi pad 5 and works super flawlessly with a little bit of tweak for the miui devices
Guys, guys, don't buy this product. I promise you will be disappointed. I once bought a wired casting device featured in an ETA Prime video before. (1) the lag IS bad, you can actually see plainly in the video that it's bad. Unless you are extremely OK with laggy gameplay, don't do it. (2) What you probably won't see in this video is that the video output will look very compressed and not crisp 1080p at all. This setup is squeezing the video signal through USB 2.0 speeds. If you want TV output from a phone, you're much better off buying a used OnePlus 7 Pro or Galaxy S10.
One mans lag is another mans perfectly fine! I've used display link and also native USB 3.0 HDMI out and can't tell the difference in emulation - both are just fine and a lot better than wireless casting
@@jazzyj8850 I'm open to being proved wrong but ETA's footage seems to have both input lag and really obvious dropped frames. Would've been nice if he had run it through an HDMI capture card so we could see the results more directly.
I actually ordered this displaylink after watching this video and it works perfect!! You can even buy a type c splitter to charge your phone while using it. Game changer.
Hi there, if you remember you posted a video of similar type of hdmi from any phone months ago, which used miraplug, i bought that one but was dissapointed with the quality of video, i mean there was some sort of compression which decreased the image quality, even though it was quite lag free but mostly i wanted to use it for video out and any miracast system even wired one compresses output of the video, unlike a real usb 3.1 alt out phones. So i was wondering about the quality of the displaylink, does it also compresses the output of the video or is it like a real usb 3.1 alt out like hdmi. thanks again, you always post interesting tech videos.
I don't the dock he used in the video, but i do have a monitor that used Displaylink over usb. I noticed that on Android, the Displaylink Presenter app used native casting function on Android. So the result is the image always have some compression in it, i think it's because Android prioritize speed over quality. Also the color isn't as nice, compared to connecting it to a computer through the same USB connection. Over on pc my display seem to have some slight input lag compared to no lag on Android, but it has no compression. So i think it's just how it works on Android
I have lenovo displaylink dock and my phone has only USB 2.0 and everything from phone gallery (videos) works great and it's in my phone's resolution, but yotube resolution drops when in landscape mode, it is little worse than my phone 1080p it scales down to maybe 720p?.
I really wish that pixel would support alt mode, but I really hope this device works out especially since I'm a big pixel fan. Just placed my order, hope it works out
Use Blackr from the play store to simulate a locked screen like state over any running app on your phone. Will save battery life while your phone display is running on the monitor.
If you have Samsung you can connect to your Tv with Samsung Dex wirelessly. Or just use Smartview and you can also go into settings to make it fullscreen. This way you dont need all the wires and you can still charge.
I think you can still charge your phone if you use a USB hub and then connect to the power and to the displaylink device, thanks for the video I was looking for a good video on theses devices on phones for months
Just tried a Xiaomi Mi Pad 5 with a Dell D6000 USB C dock, worked perfectly in conjunction with the displaylink app, had HDMI output, working usb and network ports AND it charges the tablet whilst in use
Is it possible to have a dual port USB C adapter to charge it and utilise the hdmi mirroring? I don't think the wireless charger seems optimal given the heat it outputs.

This is pretty good for the price point of 30 bucks. A raspberry pi may cost more depending on which one you get but with scrcpy application on the pi it can do most of what that does. It charges while connect too.
Yes. The Google Pixel 6 ETA tested in this video doesn't have any wired video output abilities from the factory. That omission has been a complaint of Pixel fans for years. It's thought that Google doesn't include it because they want to sell more Chromecast dongles, similar to brands removing the 3.5mm audio jack so they can sell more Bluetooth headphones. I have no clue if there's any truth to that, or not.
Damn, that's a nice lag free option for devices w/o video out. Shame my mini hub doesn't have Displaylink. I see Wavlink has a smaller USB 3 to HDMI Displaylink device for about 40usd on Amazon. How well does Displaylink handle over USB 2 speeds, many Xiaomi phones still use that spec for their USB C ports?
if I'm not mistaken, the poco f3 connects to any USB C hub. It doesn't need a display link drive hub! But poco f1 needs display link, it doesn't just connect with USB C!
Question guys: Is a USB-C to USB B cable necessary to connect the phone to the Targus hub? I bought the hub and connected a USB-C cable from my Samsung to the USB ports on the hub but none of them worked. Wondering if I need to buy a USB B to USB C cable on Amazon.
I believe it can handle video but not video and audio the way that HDMI can. The video alone is sent over the USB cable and the audio is sent to the adapter by Bluetooth. Then the audio and video are recombined and sent HDMI to the TV
Whilst this dock is useful, sadly, most of the second user sales do not come with the power cable, which cannot be utilised by a common barrel connector type because Targus used a proprietary connector. And you can already guess that the ac adapter alone can cost as much as the dock.
Nexdock is too expensive I would buy it maybe up to 100$ but price for it is basically same exact price of a brand new phone like Poco f3, Poco X3 pro and redmi note 10 pro.
I've used that particular Target adapter (and its Dell equivalent). They've very unreliable. As in the video output stops working, and you're basically left with a large USB hub. If I was going to try this out, I'd use another adapter. Another tidbit of information - if I remember correctly, this used to work quite well on Samsung phones (without any additional software being required), until they rolled out DEX. Then all of a sudden it stopped working unless the adapter was a DEX-approved device or something like that. It was some time ago, but I remember wanting to demonstrate the feature to management after testing it using our displaylink adapters at the office, only to realise that the feature had suddenly stopped working after the phone s/w was updated, grr. Looks like installing the apps you've listed is a nice workaround for the issue, so I'm definitely going to try it out.
Now if you rocked out with the tab7 lite you have so much more and it's just a little bigger than the a32, plus you have the option to jump to full out windows PC mode on the tab7. I love this tablet I got it for 15$ plus tax at metro on sale brand new along with the A32 5g, IMHO with developers options off and some personal tweaks the 32 holds its own next to most flagship devices which is impressive.. it shows how far samsung surpassed apple!
Would be interested in seeing what other launchers for desktop type use are available that you recommend? For a 'dex' type or android pc type experience rather than simply using ATV.
Is this better than the HDMI cable you showed from feb 2 2021? I own that one, and it works. But it definitely isn't native 1080p, even if the final output is. Plus it had some decent lag added
One more ditty! Super important. The cable from feb 2021, as well as older mhl on say my original tab s, DO NOT work with home theater receivers. I have a newer Yamaha, Sony, and jvc HDMI reciever. Even powering through a wall wart, it does not work. Plugging directly to my TV's and projector, worked fine. Then use ARC to send audio to a reciever. Not sure if it's the same with this product
Not sure about gamepass. Does android block video out for that? If not, you should be ok. I know PC streaming on moonlight works Because even on that feb 2021 cable, things like Hulu/Netflix only output audio. Strange.
@@tylerwhitney3443 no this cable worked pretty much like this product does. A program captured video from any Android with otg, compresses it into data. That the actual dongle has a processor that processes the data, outputs the video. But required Bluetooth, to do audio. Worked similar to Miracast, but everything was wired. I'm not sure if it was chip or bandwidth limitations, but it couldn't have been even true 720p. It did output 1080p, but definitely not native. Lots of macro blocking too. So I was curious if this huge box is any better
My phone used to show black bars like this but if I pinch my screen and just spread my fingers a bit it resizes the image to the whole screen. I have enabled an option to do so, in the Dev options on my phone .📱😁 Before I had this phone For the last 4 yrs I used an adapter to use my phone on my TV screen(HDMI out) it's just a small box with a USBC connection with HDMI, USB A & Mini USB it was only like 20$ on Amazon and makes it HDMI out. I believe I also used a software called ez cast to get it to work.(obviously I tethered but still needed the software) Now I have Ready For so I no longer need the adapter.
There are a few other good phones with display out. The upper end of the Motorola series comes with a display adaptor. I'm currently using a G100 that links up to my tv very easily. I hear the G200 and the edge series have this ability as well, although I have not used them to verify the validity of what I had heard.
If you don't want to spend a lot on the adapter, you could use scrcpy and display it on your computer, just make sure to use usb 3.0 port whenever you can to avoid latency and resolution issues
I would like to find something that could be connected to the video out in the motherboard or something like that, bit is seems it is made very difficult to achieve.
So i got myself on one of those targus docking stations shown in the video. I also get a signal out of my Xiaomi Poco F3, but my only problem is, i only get 30 fps out of it instead of 60. Is there any solution to this??
I've watched several of your videos, but due to the large number and my limited English, I couldn't quite understand them. I'd like to directly inquire about something related to connecting a phone to a TV. I want to use an emulator on my phone for PS2, Wii, NGC (I'm using Dolphin) and screen mirror it to the TV. Wireless options have too much latency. My phone, POCO F2 Pro, and Huawei Nova 7se don't support Type C to HDMI. Among the various methods you've mentioned, which is the most suitable, considering both cost and minimal latency? I've seen you mention adapters, decks, and cables, but I'm unsure if they work with phones that don't support Type C to HDMI. Also, some people mention that using a non-powered adapter may lead to connection issues due to insufficient phone power, while using cables may cause overheating. Can you provide some advice? Thank you.
Question ⁉️ would any targus dock station work or needs specific be this model.. and even if answer is yes for all models how about another dock brand station?

If you do into the display options the full screen apps or something you can force apps to use the whole display but depending on the app they may or may not be something you can't tap at all
This method is super working but i dont recommended using usb c to a adapter instead use usb c hub with pd to make it safe btw im using wavlink usb 3.0 displaylink adapter for around 7 months now and using it both of my red note 9s and currently my xiaomi pad 5 and works super flawlessly with a little bit of tweak for the miui devices
hi there can you share your settings in miui device to get this working right?
What do you mean by the " to make it safe" part, what can happen?
You didn't mention anything about the power supply at all. It just sort of appeared after you spoke about the USB B cable.
Yeah just got mine without any cables was wondering about any other cables I need
Just bought one on eBay excited to see how well it works with a Moto Z3 Play
I just bought a s10 with a broken touch screen and use it, cost me $50. And quite powerful for gaming and streaming
Or better yet buy one with a busted screen, get them even cheaper and can be a dedicated TV device
I've got the same question. No reply
Depends on the output from the device... Poco f3 for example only supports usb 2.0 so the signal will definitely reflect that
I have lenovo displaylink dock and my phone has only USB 2.0 and everything from phone gallery (videos) works great and it's in my phone's resolution, but yotube resolution drops when in landscape mode, it is little worse than my phone 1080p it scales down to maybe 720p?.
@Maka Paka you're able to mirror your usb2 cell phone to external TV with a Lenovo display link dock?
thanks! amazing! this is like having Samsung DEX. I might consider these solutions if ever I abandon x86 computing
Thank u!!! It really works!! I tried with diferents Mobiles and tablets that's no have hml native support, and I could display the screen on my tv
There will still be the latency problem right?
OneUi on Samsung supports landscape mode on homescreen
I really need this on my broken samsung s7. Now i can use my phone again even with broken screen. Thanks so much
I think you can still charge your phone if you use a USB hub and then connect to the power and to the displaylink device, thanks for the video I was looking for a good video on theses devices on phones for months
Appreciate the hard work you've done for TH-cam
Agreed he has dropped some good informative content on tech
Just tried a Xiaomi Mi Pad 5 with a Dell D6000 USB C dock, worked perfectly in conjunction with the displaylink app, had HDMI output, working usb and network ports AND it charges the tablet whilst in use
Do netflix and prime videos also work?
Is it possible to have a dual port USB C adapter to charge it and utilise the hdmi mirroring? I don't think the wireless charger seems optimal given the heat it outputs.
Yes, you just need a dual OTG cable.

Do you need the Power Adapter 5V 6.5A?
can charge and use displaylink at the same time if you use a usb-c style dock/hub (with PD!), instead of an A->C adapter. it'd be nice if devices had hdmi alt-mode.
Just ordered one! I have galaxy a42 5g but it doesn't support hdmi out over usb c so I've been bummed but really looking forward to trying this and for $30 shipped I don't have much to lose if it doesn't work. Thanks for bringing attention to this
Did this work on your samsung a52 5g? I would like a hdmi out on my A52 5g as well.
@@cruiseshipdreamer7003 it did work but the display link would freeze from time to time.
This is pretty good for the price point of 30 bucks. A raspberry pi may cost more depending on which one you get but with scrcpy application on the pi it can do most of what that does. It charges while connect too.
so this also applies to phones that have no video output?
I prefer the adapter you showed us last year
if I'm not mistaken, the poco f3 connects to any USB C hub.
Any update?
Cheers
I eventually got it to work but I don't recall the answer to my question lol.
Interesting that USB 3 B port can mirror displays. Didn't know it could do that.
I believe it can handle video but not video and audio the way that HDMI can. The video alone is sent over the USB cable and the audio is sent to the adapter by Bluetooth. Then the audio and video are recombined and sent HDMI to the TV
I'm so thankful for Dex on my Galaxy. And ready for on the Motorola
I wonder if there would be a market to make a USB C to HDMI Displaylink adapter dongle with power-in, and to see how small we can make it?
1:27 you can actually do this too if unrooted just need to give a permission to an app called second screen.
Everyone: wish my phone had hdmi out
ETA Prime: hold my CHONK of an adapter
Can we display smartphone directly to a monitor without the PC?
@@2006carlson been asking the same but no one answers lol
Great video, a really useful option!
Thanks!!
I use my PC for this. If you have usb debug on you can connect your phone through usb a to c and use a PC application to then mirror your phone.
Whilst this dock is useful, sadly, most of the second user sales do not come with the power cable, which cannot be utilised by a common barrel connector type because Targus used a proprietary connector. And you can already guess that the ac adapter alone can cost as much as the dock.
Nexdock is too expensive I would buy it maybe up to 100$ but price for it is basically same exact price of a brand new phone like Poco f3, Poco X3 pro and redmi note 10 pro.
looks smoother on phone than on screen
So, as show in that video, the Targus got its power supply from the phone...?
Does it work with an iPad with lightning usb?
There ya go, making me buy several of these units, I hope i got a compatible model targus unit that will do the same job. well done on the vid.
Great solution! I missed this way as of yet, and those used docks are really cheap!
What is the max resolution and refresh rate through hdmi , can it output 1080p 60 hz?
Now if you rocked out with the tab7 lite you have so much more and it's just a little bigger than the a32, plus you have the option to jump to full out windows PC mode on the tab7. I love this tablet I got it for 15$ plus tax at metro on sale brand new along with the A32 5g, IMHO with developers options off and some personal tweaks the 32 holds its own next to most flagship devices which is impressive.. it shows how far samsung surpassed apple!
Thanks ETA for the video. This is the solution I needed for my project! Hoot!
Would be interested in seeing what other launchers for desktop type use are available that you recommend? For a 'dex' type or android pc type experience rather than simply using ATV.
Can I use this to connect my Redmi note 10 pro in my car that has rca connectors to my DVD player?
is it just me or is the fps on the monitor very noticeably lower than the phones?
Can't wait to see what the s22 can do
Is this better than the HDMI cable you showed from feb 2 2021?
I own that one, and it works. But it definitely isn't native 1080p, even if the final output is. Plus it had some decent lag added
can u use apps like gamepass with it? I'm looking for something like this that can display gamepass
I know PC streaming on moonlight works
Because even on that feb 2021 cable, things like Hulu/Netflix only output audio. Strange.
The Miracast adapter? I'm curious too, I'd rather use this for $10 more and HDMI
Is this possible without a PC ? Just your phone and TV please answer ?
My phone used to show black bars like this but if I pinch my screen and just spread my fingers a bit it resizes the image to the whole screen.
I have enabled an option to do so, in the Dev options on my phone .📱😁
Before I had this phone For the last 4 yrs I used an adapter to use my phone on my TV screen(HDMI out) it's just a small box with a USBC connection with HDMI, USB A & Mini USB it was only like 20$ on Amazon and makes it HDMI out. I believe I also used a software called ez cast to get it to work.(obviously I tethered but still needed the software)
Now I have Ready For so I no longer need the adapter.
There are a few other good phones with display out.
The upper end of the Motorola series comes with a display adaptor. I'm currently using a G100 that links up to my tv very easily. I hear the G200 and the edge series have this ability as well, although I have not used them to verify the validity of what I had heard.
Btw, based on your suggestions, I have spent a fortune buying items you have featured on your page here.
Thanks for being my go-to tech dude.
The homescreen can be changed to rotate if you hold down on it and tap setting on android phones or at least samsung phones.
If you don't want to spend a lot on the adapter, you could use scrcpy and display it on your computer, just make sure to use usb 3.0 port whenever you can to avoid latency and resolution issues
This is referring to a TV only
In Samsung phones you can rotate your home screen by just going into home screen settings and enable home screen rotation
will this work on doogee phones or oneplus? thanks for your time
What cable do you use to plug into the display
I think he used a USB 3.0 to HDMI adaptor.
Was it supposed to come with the USB type B cable? Because mine didn't
Novice question but.... this setup will work for a Galaxy tab A7 to a smart tv???
Does it play Netflix and Hulu off the phone to the TV with this device?
How did u hook the Taurus up to the tv? What did u use?
I would like to find something that could be connected to the video out in the motherboard or something like that, bit is seems it is made very difficult to achieve.
what about if you connect display link via d6000 by dell? that thing has 130w power
Think I'll pick one up for my new ITX system. I was miffed when I found out its usb-c port didn't support display out.
Can you test it using gamepass. I just checked eBay and saw a bunch of them for 10 dollars.
So i got myself on one of those targus docking stations shown in the video. I also get a signal out of my Xiaomi Poco F3, but my only problem is, i only get 30 fps out of it instead of 60. Is there any solution to this??
This is nice to be paired with desktop launchers like Lumina.
Im glad my lg v60 has a setting where you switch to a 16by9 TV ratio (:
Some 3rd party launchers like Microsoft Launcher allow rotation on the home screen without the need for an extra app to control rotation
Thank you.
Can we connect 2 tablets to stream same video in both?
ETA i would like to know if realme 8, realme 9 pro+ and redmi note 10 pro support docking stations with hdmi to tv...
It's worked but I don't have audio? Thank you very much.
Cool. MIne is on order already
Would It be possibile to make work our laptop hardware as display link tool and then go to the big screen with phone display?
This work much better than casting.
It does for sure, I've seen some people never have issues with casting but for me I've always run into a lot of lag
@@ETAPRIME I've heard some people can get low latency casting but I can't. Chromecast is on Ethernet, Pixel is on 5ghz wifi, still laggy
if I want to use this setup with my camera app to tape video, will it still display to the monitor??
are there any other Docks that adds support for display port for Xiaomi Poco phones?
Will it work for mini projector?
Just got one of these and i can't get it to connect to TV. Does this only work on a monitor?
Question ⁉️ would any targus dock station work or needs specific be this model.. and even if answer is yes for all models how about another dock brand station?
Will this work with a older phone that doesn't have USB-C I think mine is USB-b mini . ?
Whats the cheapest solution with charging over usb?
