    Was in the market for a beginner's MTB 4 Xmas and stumbled upon the Xtrada 7 for $852nz($540us) and a quick search popped up your reviews. Quality details and easy for an uneducated MTB user to understand. Cheers 👍

    To improve the hydraulic disc brakes, a simple improvement is to upgrade the levers to SLX or better. These levers have more leverage and better modulation, plus theres much less slack so they feel more responsive.
    I've also changed the grips to matching yellow on mine ;)

    I looked at getting the Xtrada 6 to match my Siskiu D6 (same paint scheme), but the 27.2 seatpost killed it for me. Ended up with a Specialized Rockhopper which has a 30.9 seatpost so I was able to get a 170mm dropper on it.

    I put a machete (with a set of nukeproof wheels I found for $200 on marketplace) and PNW post on my girlfriend’s xtrada. I would argue that what makes the xtrada a good value bike is that it has a frame worth upgrading. If I bought a hardtail frame and deore 12speed drivetrain I would realistically already be up at close to $1000, and as you said it’s all the little parts that really start to add up. But if you upgrade one at a time it’s probably worth it.

    Nice upgrades. I almost bought the exact seat post clamp when I put in my dropper. It was just too expensive for what it was. Those metallic pads work better in those MT201 brakes? I didn’t see a link to the pads I think the color is a nice touch. I was also going to do the two white bottle holders but when with a white and a teal from a local Trek shop. It’s a pretty fun bike.

    • @CobraKyle
      @CobraKyle  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The metal pads offer a bit more bite and just a more familiar feel at least for me. I've never liked the unassured feel of resin pads. It's a super fun bike. It keeps impressing me when I ride it!

    • @mynameishaydn3287

      Make sure your rotors are compatible with the metallic pads. Resin specific rotors will wear super fast if you use metallic pads

    • @bora01vr6
      @bora01vr6 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The best upgrade for these brakes is to upgrade the brake levers . Any shimano brake lever w/servo wave will increase braking power more so than if you were to run sintered pads. Look at deore, slx or xt levers. All you do is swap the levers, you don’t even need to take the brake calipers /houses off. . A simple top bleed and you’re good to go.

      That's awesome to hear! I never tried anything bigger than a 2.4. Suntour has a tire clearance chart I just looked up, and it says max size for the fork is 2.4. I imagine they just play it conservatively and a 2.5" would probably clear.

    What kind of fork should I search for that would fit this wheel? I keep hearing it’s “non boost” I don’t know what that means, except you can’t but just any fork?

    • @CobraKyle
      @CobraKyle  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Boost and non boost refer to the thru axle spacing. A non boost fork is 15x100 while a boost fork is 15x110. If you plan on running the stock wheels, you'll need a 15x100. I've heard of people running spacers and using a boost fork (makes up 5mm on each side of wheel) but I have never tried that personally. If that does work, then you could essentially buy any boost fork. Hope that helps!

      @@CobraKyle Thanks for the tip! I looked into this more and apparently this is more or less "normal"? The air fork still felt worlds better than what I had on the Xtrada 5 and generally this was a huge upgrade over the 5 so I may just keep riding as is unless it starts getting worse. What he didn’t tell you is that he had to change the headset because the Xtrada comes with a straight steerer fork in a tapered bottom bracket. He had to upgrade the headset so he could use his tapered manitou fork in the tapered head tube.. I just learned this the hard way. After dealing with numerous issues on my Xtrada I’m very disappointed that I didn’t buy a more reputable brand. The poor quality of the bike is apparent from the hubs to the headset. For 1000 dollars you get a higher quality bike elsewhere. Lower grade parts I can say that I would have been happier with a lower spec bike that was built properly..
    Things that were wrong with my Xtrada:
    advertised with Shimano brakes. Was delivered with tektro.
    Bent rear wheel
    Both wheels have inadequate spoke tension and need to have every spoke tightened and the wheels trued
    Front hub completely bound up l. Required disassembly/repack
    Rear wheel hub loose and low on grease. Required disassembly/repack
    Brake disc bent on front wheel. Required straightening.
    Headset loose, when I disassembled it expecting to repack/re assemble, I found a bent bearing cage and a straight steerer tube shimmed to run in a tapered tube… absolutely unacceptable in my eyes.
    I’ll never buy anything from polygon again. Very disappointed.

    • @CobraKyle
      @CobraKyle  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Xtrada 7 does come with a tapered fork. You must have the Xtrada 5 or 6 which does not have a tapered fork. I wouldn't knowingly mislead my audience in that manner. I upgraded the headset because I don't like the cheap loose ball bearing type of headsets and I liked the purple design...the exact reasons I stated in the video. Sorry to hear your experience with Polygon hasn't been positive. It sucks to get a new product and it shows up in less than stellar condition. I've been happy with mine and it showed up/worked as advertised. I hope you contacted either Polygon or the retailer you bought it from and shared that information as that should never be the standard for any bike company. I hope your next bike isn't as bad an experience.

    A year later, already realizing this bike isn't even worth upgrading and needs to be swapped out for the Scott Scale 965. Same price (right now). Same group set with slightly better components. All of these upgrades would be easier because more compatible, or unnecessary. Also you get a dropper post and beefier tires. Less travel on the fork, but it's a speed demon and climber first and foremost. Geometry/specs are nearly identical except the major difference is significantly shorter stack height (speed and climbing).

    Kyle: want taller bars.
    Also Kyle: mounts new 25 mm bars 10mm lower than his 10mm rise bars

    You crash. You have a bone sticking out. You yell at people coming, don't look at my down tube protector.

      Nothing more shameful than my downtube protector. It will be mine (and the internet's) dirty little secret lol

    I wish they wouldn’t use such feminine colors on their bikes. Otherwise there’s no other manufacturer that gives you soo much bang for your buck..
