I had a stump 3 times that size to remove. Started to dig around it then remembered how powerful water is. Pulled out the power washer and had all the dirt around the stump gone in about 45 minutes. It was a dirty job. Pulled out the chain saw and cut it into small pieces. Hole filled in and done in about 5 hours. Have since pulled three more stumps the same way. Pressure washer removes the dirt.
I just finished removing a stump twice that size. I used the sawzall at first, then the chopping ax and shovel and post hole digger (looks like a large chisel 5 feet long with mushroomed end opposite the chisel). Then brute force (my legs and back against the wall of the hole till it fell over). Then I began using the post hole digger and splitting maul (heavier, cuts w/ more force) to trim it down. After that I used a come-along to haul it out, chopped more big pieces off. Moved rocks left over from another construction into the hole, then all the dirt and that was it. Three weeks of 2 to 5 hours a day.
I feel your pain. I've dug out many such stumps and even larger over my life time. Now that I am much older, I think I will use compound leverage to do the job when I need to remove a stump. My digging years are long pass me now... But thumbs up for your efforts.
I only think I'm young. While getting the stump out I relied on many breaks. And another odd thing, I don't remember sweating as much as when I was younger (20s, 30s, 40s, 50s). Something has changed.
Cyndi Loppers ha ha! Good tips. I am removing a lot of stumps on some overgrown property. I find that compressed air for blowing around roots helps. I may try a pressure washer too. I am sure it will make a royal mess!
I have three big stumps Cedar, Douglas fir, and a Ponderosa Pine. I will start on one tomorrow, you have inspired me. I am 65 years old and need some retirement exercise. 🤦🏻♂️
It is fun. I could have rented a stump grinder and took care of it, but there is satisfaction behind digging and cutting for removal. Thank you for watching 🇺🇸🤘
not quick I agree! loving it... I am working with a small grave diggers shovel and a medium axe. But really appreciate your view of the extent of the work involved!
Brilliant! Love a guy with intestinal fortitude who doesn’t give up. U got in spades dude!! I’m a girl and gotta tackle a massive old rotting tree trunk in a fenced back yard so big equip out of the question. Got any tips for me?
Dig, saw, repeat process. I’ve heard that a pressure washer helps blow out the dirt - but that can be messy. It just takes time, but you will get it! 🇺🇸🤘
One thing I noticed that would have made it easier and maybe a little quicker was the winch on the lawn tractor. I thought when you pointed it out that you were going to use it. If you could have positioned your truck in front of the tractor and used the chain to tie them together, you could have used the winch to pull the stump.
Glad this worked out for you. However, can't help but notice that the chain, heavy duty strap, lawn tractor and the jeep weren't in the original tool inventory.
@@jimmysgarage9068 I have a similar job, but don't have vehicular access. Was looking for a way to remove multiple stumps without going down the route of hiring a stump grinder. Would rather spend the money on tools I can use and keep for future jobs. I think a decent come-along winch and chains should work in combination with a reciprocating saw and load of digging. 🤞
@@ottofumbler7267 Agreed! I have a 2500lb winch on my tractor.. had I gotten everything properly cut, that may have yanked that sucker out. Best of luck to you!
@@mistersniffer6838 I used to operate a small stump grinding business - that’d be the quickest way to get rid of it - but not the cheapest. I’ve seen some really cool videos on drilling & burning them out - maybe take a weekend with a case of beer and give that a shot?
@@jimmysgarage9068 - Yea, I didnt want to grind it as it is right in front of the front door of the house and the yard would sag over time as it rots. I just want to get rid of it. Gonna try to tip it on its side and drag it to the side yard and maybe burn it there. Its a beast, wish me luck and a keg.....Ha!!
What a tiring video. I too was crazy enough when I was 31 years old to dig around and cut many roots on a 3’ diameter oak stump. After 20 or more ours of sweating profusely and several bad back aches the stump finally cam out. I swore that very day to never in my remaining lifetime would I ever do that again, and I didn’t. I suggest it is always better to pay someone to grind these stumps down especially for only $80 or $100 bucks, my back and psyche is well worth this expenditure.......and your too I’m sure.
@@jimmysgarage9068 ......cudos for sticking in there man, I’m sure your were like me, ain’t no stinkin stump gonna beat my ass! Good job fella
I wouldn’t call that a MASSIVE stump. I have a stump from an old English oak in my front yard that makes that look like a twig. Not looking forward to removing it either
So I did all the digging and cutting.. my filming skills are a lot better nowadays - I wish I could re-film this for a better overview of things. Thank you for watching though 🇺🇸🤘
Hi Mike. I have been researching your comment for the last month. Talking to professional loggers and tree removal guys. They are all saying the same thing. That removing a stump with a chainsaw is dangerous and they would never attempt it. The main problem seems to be kickback. If the chain hits a rock or a hard piece of log, the saw will kick back and cause massive and devastating injuries. They all say they use a stump grinder.
@0:41 Tools You neglected "adult" beverages and 5 gallons of gas @1:33 Was sure you were going to quit at this point for another year @1:49 Why do you want people parking on the lawn? You have a drive way @4:06 Again, was sure you were going to call it a day and head to Harbor Freight
Is not small. Not the biggest in the world either. “Small” stumps are 8-12 inches. For grinding, this would be considered on the smaller side, but for digging - it was a workout!
A lot of wasted time and wasted effort all you should have done was got your farm jack or a engine hoist dug under your roots wrapped a chain around it and lifted this puppy right out of the ground
I have an engine hoist but its legs aren't wide or long enough to straddle a hole that big. I'm currently working on removing a similar sized stump, and all I can do is dig, cut, repeat.

That’s an awesome idea. I’ll use that technique next time! 🇺🇸🤘🏻
Power washer and cordless reciprocating saw with pruning blade and narrow spade for removing dirt it's actually easy
I was thinking that maybe a ShopVac would help in getting dirt out of the way, didn't think of a pressure washer. Thanks for the suggestion!

Can't the chain slip out and hit you ? I saw it happen once when one truck was pulling another out of mud
