Thank you so very much for posting these iconic news sounders. I first heard them on WCBS Newsradio 88 in the summer of 1967 and think they are the best in the business. They communicate electricity and importance, in my opinion, for the information about to be heard. This is the first time in decades I have heard clear versions without voice-overs. Much appreciated.

You're welcome. I had these going around in my brain for decades and they still sound great. It's funny how my brother and I were just kids but we would actually listen to "Newsradio 78" and these sounders were a big part of my memories. I'm glad I can share them and that you're enjoying them!

These were designed to cut through traffic noise and be heard clearly on AM radios, which is what most cars had (IF they even had a radio) in city traffic with windows down and horns honking. It also accommodated people of different hearing abilities, so it had a mix of highs, mids and lows.

    Rest in peace WCBS AM.
I live in Denver Colorado, never been to New York.
I was able to pick up WBBM during the nighttime.
Its amazing that 88 WCBS AM and 78 WBBM AM used the same jingle package.

I'm wondering if other CBS stations also were using these sounders/jingles as well. How cool that you were able to hear WBBM where you were.

I have to wonder - did Heller do the CBS News TOH radio sounder first used in 1968-69 and, in that original form, last through about 1983?

@@wmbrown6 From what I can gather, that sounder was done by a company called Identitones. You can check it out and hear other CBS sounders here (read the description)

OK, here's a link that definitely states the sounder was created by Eric Siday. Identitones was his company.

@@Tomovox_PAMS_Radio_JIngles - Makes me wonder, then, if Identitones did the sounder as also heard on WCBS, and Heller did the vocal jingles?

The very first CBS news tone of three bells was actually a guy hitting 3 bells of different tones (different sizes) in the studio with a microphone every time. Eventually they recorded it to their satisfaction and it became the standard CBS news tone. I have seen a black & white photo of him doing this.

Thanks for bringing this out. I had never heard about this before. Good historical information. I always enjoy learning about these things connected with broadcasting history. That had to be tedious having to do that live every time - or it could have been job security (chuckle!)

@@Tomovox_PAMS_Radio_JIngles Thanks! Based on the photograph, I believe that the bells were approximately 3 to 4 inches in diameter. They were all slightly different sizes. I personally love the early CBS News tone, and at one point I had it on my phone as my ringer and I would like to do that again. This was the early days of radio when little of it was automated.

The same news intro at the very start was used to usher in the very first day of Newsradio 88 on WCBS... which was in August 1967. The WBBM jingles in here may in fact be 1971.. but, the news sound at the start is earlier.

Thanks for that information. As a child, you hear these things and never consider that anyone else anywhere else was hearing the same jingles/sounders. I grew up in the Chicago area and I recall these in the very early 70s til at least the middle of the decade. Plus the CD listed them as 1971. So maybe the package was indeed from a few years before WBBM started using them.

Heller did jingles for the Fairbanks stations back in the 70’s. WIBC WIBG KVIL WVBF WNAP. NOW THAT WAS INTERESTING stuff.

WBBM and WCBS radios localized version of the CBS Radio News sounders. How do I know? Because the CBS O&O Newsradio sounders have the same rhythms and baselines as the network's sounders.

Interesting- thanks for pointing that out. For years I had taken for granted that these were specific to WBBM. Then again, I didn't think much about the back story of these as an 8 year old hearing them.

I never really had an interest in stuff from the 70s/80s so I never collected it. I don't know where I'd even find those. I would try checking with Ellis Feaster. He's got a great collection.
