I told you this when we went fishing and saw this scenario on one of your previous videos and I'll say it again. You're a class act. It takes emotional maturity to handle situations like you did ESPECIALLY when he's putting you in danger. I think we as anglers owe it to each other to respect others safety and he clearly was only worried about himself. Then he just rolls up to the spot completely blowing up the whole area. Unreal man. Again, your perspective and handling of these scenarios have actually helped me when I've ran into similar situations. Keep being the good dude you are.
Have you considered getting a kayak light pole with a flag and boat beacon lights to be more visible because it looks like you blind-in and you don't have anything to keep yourself more visible to other boaters
I ran into a similar situation last year. I was fishing Bayou Sara and a State Trooper actually almost took me out. He was flying round a hairpin turn full-speed and I was on the other side. Luckily I got out of the way and he slow down for that could have been a very bad situation. There are so many people that run these river systems and go full speed around a blind turn not worried about anything. You handle it right. The one thing I will suggest is putting up an orange flag on your yak. And wear bright clothing or bright color life vest. I used to kayak myself and know that I would be hard to see now that I own a boat. Something's better than nothing.
Definitely a good point. I’m not sure a flag would have helped in this situation but like you said it certainly can’t hurt to have it. It’s just an extra layer of safety so very good point!!
Agree on the orange flag and bright colors. Also canned air horn To let them know your there. I have a boat & kayak and it is unfortunate that some folks in boats think that they trump anglers that are fishing from a kayak or for that matter wade fishing but these days it happens all of the time.
I was scrolling through the comments to look for this comment. I think your colors blend in with the environment a bit so boaters hauling can barely see u. I did the same in a harbor and had a bunch of sailboats getting close to me. I was a bit angry at first but then realized I'm blending in with the ocean and hard to see. So now I have a pool noodle with a flag at one end wrapped around my fishing pole I'm not using. Hoping that helps them see me, thinking of adding a light also. Stay safe out there y'all!
My Father started teaching me how to drive a boat over the past few years and the first thing he told me is keep your head on a swivel, I follow that advice every time I go out and try to respect others on the water especially kyakers, but watching this guy have his bow so high up and him sitting down is a huge red flag, and I highly respect you for not getting in to a argument with the boater cause ive heard the same thing recently and have been following it, you don't know what the other person might do, Stay safe and love the videos!
4:34 when I hunt a public levee for waterfowl , it never fails to have some random hunter sit within 5” yards of me. Miles and miles of levee and they basically sit on my lap. Safe distance being 300 feet minimum. First come first serve. I guess the best thing to do is ask nicely
"Letting it go" is really hard. There's a pontoon boat on Jackson Lake that still has my crank bait stuck to the side of it where the operator drove between me and the bank when I was 20 yards off of the bank.
😯 😯 lol dang man 😂… you’re right though, letting it go is hard. I had a bad situation arise a few years ago in Rabbit Creek and it just taught me that it’s better to just move on lol
@@southernsalt the closest experience with a boat I've ever had was on the Etowah river and was almost run over by the fire department doing a training exercise. They thought it was funny, I did not. They never even slowed down and they were going up stream so they didn't get a piece of my mind.
Hats off to you brother! This is the first video of yours that I have watched. I saw you on vitamin d’s channel. In Florida it’s legal to carry while fishing. Like you said there’s too much water and you never know what someone is willing to do. It’s not worth it. For what it’s worth, you’ve gained a new subscriber!
Man brother. I’m glad that this video turned informative. Not, accidental! Be safe out there brother. Stay positive, you’re well respected and I have to say you handled that situation, the best you could. 💪🎣🐟💯🔥🤙
I’ve had this happen to much out on the kayak. It’s a boaters favorite saying to a kayaker as they fly past us. “I didn’t see you sorry” and I’ve had your exact situation happen couldn’t stand he started fishing where I was headed. But you handled it very well
I cycle and kayak. I’ve had one close call on the kayak, and was hit cycling in 2013. While I can’t control what someone else does, I need to do what I can to be as highly visible as possible. Whenever I do either kayaking or cycling, I make sure I wear the brightest clothing I can get to not blend in with surroundings.
I would of told him to pay attention and continued on my way. When in a boat I'm usually trolling for salmon in and out of 40 to 50 boats all in a small area. People are usually pretty nice about it out there if they mess up.
Absolutely, you handled that dangerous situation correctly. I experienced a dangerous situation on the water while fishing with my dad a couple years ago while fishing on a favorite creek down in VA. My dad and I hit the water right at sunrise. We had been fishing for a couple hours when a local crabber came through checking his pots in the area where we were fishing. He had checked several pots in the area near us when he started yelling and cursing at us. He accused us of stealing crabs out of his pots. He even threatened to sink our Jon boat. I only keep my cool and tried to ignore him because I didn't want to put my dad in any danger. I tried to explain to him we are only here fishing and we did not bother his crab baskets.
Awesome advice from a well seasoned kayak fisherman. I agree with your top 3 dangers on the water in a kayak. I would include having a change of clothes in a dry bag on your yak somewhere. If you ever take a spill in the winter in cold water, you will thank me. Might just save you from hypothermia! Peace out!
You handled that really well man. I give a pass to people who genuinely make a mistake or otherwise have an unintentional faux pas. Now, the people that try to wake you out deliberately or make multiple passes with no clear purpose, yeah, my attitude comes out hard when that happens.
It’s pretty bad in that area of DR. Many times have I left that launch and come across boaters moving way to fast through there.always be prepared for everyone else.
Nate i couldn't agree more with your top 3... i have had all 3 happen to me and have learned a lot in my first year kayak fishing. Great way to handle that guy keep up the great work
I fish a local recreational lake that rec6a lot of boating, skiing, tubing, and tournament fishing. This stuff happens all the time. Just hang in there, take it in stride, and enjoy your fishing trip. Life is far too short to worry over things beyond your control ( and people). One tip; make yourself highly visible!
This is MrBear hudson fl. i have the same problem with boats here. you did what you should have done be the bigger man.i have been on my bonafide ss127 with motor or palle for thee years now still learning, was on party/head boats for 22 years. what i will say is that a 6foot red or brigther flag should be mandatory for safty and i carry a small canester air horn for just what you whent through. to all kayakers yo
Thanks for the Tips.. Don't know How you Handled the boater Off Camera Nate, but obviously you Said or Heard something from the Boater.. Glad that you Didn't get Wet there is my Concern.. I Had a Night at a House Fire when the deep ditch Seemingly was Not in the Picture that I saw, while assessing the Attack procedure on the Engulfed Structure.. Did my Job, Got Up (with my Right wrist Thumping BigTime) and Extinguished the Big blaze.. Didn't See the Big drop-off ditch that Had to Be Crossed AT ALL.. Did you Catch ANY Fish on that $34 lure is My Question Nate??
I agree with the information provided. Fishing in a kayak is similar to a bicyclist sharing the road with automobiles. I'm always thinking "defensive". Also, I wonder if the guy really didn't see you or was just trying to beat you to the spot.
Man that sucks. I try not to wake anyone out boat or kayak. I was fishing fowl river this weekend and had another TH-camr do me the same way. I was fishing a basin and he came 50 yards in front of me and started fishing where I was heading. It sucks but I picked my trolling motor up and eased on up the river. Definitely not worth fighting over it. I always try to be respectful and courteous on the water we are all here to enjoy it. I wish everyone did the same but hey it is what it is. I love your content thanks for all the info you put out
@@southernsalt oh yeah I know exactly who it is. I really like his content. Would’ve hoped he knew better but he was fishing the bog and we were both trying to get out of the wind. What can you do? We caught 30 trout 2 over 18 so it didn’t ruin my day just kinda let me down with someone I enjoyed watching
I have had it happen more than once definitely at Night every time I hear a boat I locate it and keep a eye on it you just never know what they are going to do
I never confront. You never know who is in the other boat. Generally I find the guys fishing are pretty courteous with their boats in relation to kayakers. It's the water skiers and PWC people I have issue with. The lake I deal with the most boats is heavily used and big enough and deep enough to have plenty of decent fish but mid day it becomes a a bit of zoo. Prior to 10:00 AM there is a 8 mph speed limit. Powered boats have to go in a counterclockwise pattern. My first kayak was a gray mottled sit in and it was pretty invisible. So was my PFD. After some near misses like you had, I decided my next kayak was going to be a bright color. It's orange (the Old Town orange/black). My PFD is red and I have a 4 ft YakAttack light/flag pole which sits in back and I use it all day or night.
A lot of truths to what your saying but keep in mind its always gonna be people inexperienced/drunks on the water and with a kayak you can’t get out the way quick enough sometimes. Enter with a kayak at your own risk in waters such as these.
Fishing is my hobby and i am passionate about it. I also own a 20 foot Legend XCalibur and from spring to late fall i am on some body of water and i see the same thing almost every time, where some guys think that they owned the waterways and either pretend that they dont see other fishermen in the water and will do exactly as that guy did, NO ETIQUETTE. My friend! You handled it your way which is admirable but how are these people going to learn if we dont point out the errors of their ways? I would have confronted him calmly and teach him the correct way to operate a motorized vehicle on the water, after all most people just buy a boat and maybe learn the basic but dont know the marine rules.
Interesting perspective, I think hind sight is 20/20 but in the moment I wasn’t calm, maybe on the outside but on the inside lol. After I did calm he was long gone but I definitely understand your point and it’s something I can keep in my next time. Thank you
Yep, happens all the time... It's even worse in saltwater. Will get right on ya, swerve around and then fish the very bank you were on. I just fish where I want to fish... if it's right next to them fine. He can do it to me, I can do it to him, I just try not to speak and keep fishing. Down here tour guides will bring 12 tandem outboard boats right up on you while you're coming in to dock.
That is straight up bull i am a boater and whenever i had this situation where i was wanting to fish a spot and saw a kayaker with rods i would drive up to them and check if they were gonna fish the spot if yes i will just go another spot because it probably took him a good amount of time to get there and me being in a boat i can go anywhere on the entire body of water
Same thing happened to me on the Lynx also. I know and remember the boat that harassed me last season. He/they better not let me see him when I take my bass boat out this year. A black Tracker with 115hp. Will see what happen when they get circle with a 225hp bass boat.
You handled that well, even with the most stable kayak those swells can cause a problem. I've thought about adding fenders for this reason. Do you have a visible flag pole or flashing light from harbor freight and I responded before watching till the end.
@@southernsalt okay, I'm just getting into Kayaking and videos like this helps newbies like myself. Safety can't be drilled enough. I have a question, if you solo kayak alot, would It be a good idea to have lake enforcement do a check-in periodically?
Very informative video. Be safe on the water . Thankfully, you're 👌, and handle the situation well. Too many people on the water that don't have any sense or respect. A short story for you. I was with my girlfriend and we were hammering the Flounder off "my pier" in one particular area. Four guys were fishing close to my other pier on the opposite side. They saw us catching Flounder out of the spot close to the shoreline next to some grass about 30 feet from my pier. They pulled anchor and pulled right on top of the area we were fishing. We couldn't even cast to the area. They didn't say anything but they just kept looking at us like we were crazy. I didn't say anything to them. We just put up our gear and went in the house. So, disrespectful and so disappointed for my girlfriend because she was having such a fun time. I still get upset about that because we like you put a lot of time, money and effort to go to my place and get away from all the traffic and people in Houston. Thanks again for all you do to share your time on the water.....
Thanks man! That would frustrate the heck out of me even more because the only place you have to fish is off your dock man, that boat could go anywhere 🤦🏻♂️
The biggest issue I encounter fishing the intercoastal waterway in North Carolina is jet skis, 90% of the time they see you they just think it’s funny to run right up to you and turn away, on the most part, I get respect from boaters
WIND. I went out on lake michigan.. and couldnt get back to shore..Paddling in place for like an hour.. Boaters wont stop for you! luckily i had my phone and coast guard was nearby!
And that's why I am selling my kayak. On the lakes around here, the boaters don't pay attention and people on jet skis do pay attention and try to swamp you.
He was in wrong for sure. Running at speed and not able to see other boaters is one hell of an issue. You were a bit further off bank than 10 or 20 yards but close enough he aught to have been slower for debris in water at very least
Had a boat do the same to me and I was way closer to the bank, he almost swamped me trying to get into the spot I had just pedaled a long distance to reach. I was not happy.
@@southernsalt Yup, in both your case and mine I'm sure they knew exactly what they were doing, and they deserve some serious old time correction, but it's just not worth the trouble these days. People who do this are literally bottom of the barrel characters. If I see a man fishing somewhere, I pedal on by and go somewhere else. I always smile knowing I'm 10x the fisherman and will get my fish either way. I also laugh when they go sit on a spot like that and fish totally the wrong spot. Or they park right on top of the hole and fish everywhere but where the fish usually hold, lol. 🤣🤣🤣
6th Sense makes the best swimbaits - the "Draw" is the best in the game for the price point, even though it's expensive. If you like the trace, they are coming out with a mini version of both the trace and the draw soon - I'm praying the price won't be nearly as high lol
oh man i just got my fist fishing kayak (106 pdl sportsman) and although i dont have to worry much about boaters on my private lake, u now have me worried about flipping and loosing hundreds of $ in watever falls out of my yak if i flip... how often would u say people flip? im only 5'6 so my center of gravity is pretty low so hopefully the people that flip are the taller ones? lol
Don’t stress or worry about, just prepare for it. It’ll happen, it happens to all of us but the most important part is to always wear your PFD and practice re-entering your kayak. Start with non rigged and the practice with a fully rigged kayak.
Couldn't see your entire kayak stem to stern but I didn't see any type of position making flag to make yourself more visible to other boats Remember for many boaters and fisherman Kayaks on larger bodies of water are still a relatively new thing and kayaks are very hard to see especially if your mind set is to look for larger boats and not smaller close to the water kayaks
Past behavior is a predictor... If they are discourteous enough to do what they did, then it would prolly just escalate. Safety of Kayak vs Boat aside, I've had fishermen come along and steal my heading and I don't confront. I'm on a boat, so I just leapfrog them and get back on my fishing heading.
Man, I’ve had that happen to me time and time again, and what i do is fish between the bank and the boat, if they say something I just apologize and say, oh my bad……. Didn’t see you!!!!
Wake boats are the worst , had one almost capsize me …passed by 25 ft pulling a wake board …no recognition….there’s always that one guy who is going to cut ya off because he can …….set the hook brother
Respect how you handled it. Just gotta bite our lip. Come to learn its part of kayak fishing. Some people don't view you with the same respect as a boat. I wouldn't have moved spots tho. Im not paddling another half mile just to get cutoff again.
Dude.... I've been kayaking more and more this year. It is 50:50 on whether or not a boat will wake you or not. I try and stand up when a boat is coming by and seems to help. Kayakers get little respect.
Technically you were the give-way vessel, with him on your starboard side. That being said there are way too many people on boats that do not care about anyone else but themselves. You handled it well.
Brother you was the better man here. You did the right thing by just keeping it moving. With him being in a boat he could have gotten mad at you & try to run you over. You was out there to have fun & not ket someone ruin your fun. Good job brother. Be safe out there brother.
i use the yakgear orange visibility kit .. orange flag and light 5ft, I dont bother to justify another actions.. i just watch out for my own safety, and move on.
You should have a hi res flag on a long pole i use a old fishing rod and i use 2 flags 1 pirate flag and one ultra bright remember when were out on our kayaks we sit what 1 foot maybe out of water we have a very low profile from a distance being a avid kayker and boater cant tell you how much a simple flag can help safety first
Brother as I have learned in the year and half I have been kayak fishing most all boaters and fisherman are very courteous. The ones that are not are either amateurs that don't know any better or they are just plain a**holes. Like you said in my 30 years of public safety service you just don't know who you are dealing with and are crazy. I feel personally you handled that perfectly and were the bigger person and did the best thing you could do. Which was overlook an idiot and enjoy what we are so blessed to and that is kayak fish. Keep it brother.
@@southernsalt you are welcome Nat. One of the reasons I enjoy your channel. You and few others that I enjoy, You guys are real and show the true realities of our sport yall show the good and the bad. Keep it up bro.
Because he didn't see you, he is in the wrong and his wake could swamp you. However if we were to use the navigation lights. He would have the right of way to cross in front of you since he is on the right. I think you handled it well.
The only thing I do differently, mostly because I fish mostly from a bass boat i is I use a 6' flag to help people see me n my Kayak. People aren't always paying perfect attention, distractions happen.
I think you contradicted yourself a couple of times. You said he was coming full speed, but wasn't on plane. Well, it can't be both unless it was a severely underpowered boat, which it didn't appear to be. It more appears that he was running and gunning and was starting to slow down, but didn't really try to set the boat down until right in front of you, which was certainly it courteous. You also said that he dropped his trolling motor right where you had started fishing. It wasn't until after he passed you that you grabbed a rod which was behind you. Having said that, the boat on the right (him) has the right of way. Had he been on plane, he would have left less of a wake than being nose up. He should have sat the boat down well before he did, being that close to you. The move I'd have made, after I stopped screaming, would have been to paddle right in front of him and start fishing. Again, with you not having a rod in your hand or even on the front deck, there's no way for him to know you were planning to fish that spot. Perhaps coming up beside him and saying "hey man, I realize you didn't see me, but there are stumps in here, so please be careful." That way, you've acknowledged that he's an idiot, but didn't escalate the situation.
I've been cut off just like that! I didn't move around or fish in front of them. I stayed put and fished behind them and hung a monster, they were pissed! Later on that day i was cut off again by the same people and once again i hooked another monster. They slammed their rods and packed up and went bye bye.
i think if they came dangerously close to hitting you, you SHOULD say something and then let it go. That way you plant the seed to protect others from him next time around he might have that little thought in his mind about being more careful.
New to kayak fishing, As a boater too, agree this guy ignorant to fish in your spot. But not getting mad or confrontational was a good choice on your part. That said, you were barely visible! Kayakers really need to try to make themselves as visible as possible to boats (!!!) so they can spot you, AT A DISTANCE, as soon as possible. My husband has same kayak/color as yours. And even with his orange kayak flag up and his red pfd vest, he's still hard to see at a distance, especially on a cloudy day. He says I'm hard to see, too, at times, even though my kayak is bright yellow. As a boater, whether you are planed out, going 40+ mph, or bow up if slowing down. ...even if watching carefully... I know from experience that a small, close-to-the-water kayak or float tube can be difficult to see at a distance. You can be practically on top of them before you know it. So I can understand this guy not spotting you. If he had seen you sooner, he might have veered off to another spot. May have been getting back at you for giving him a scare. As for us, we're planning our next trip to a reservoir where we know there will be fast-moving boats. Before then, I plan on making taller diy flags for us, with a larger, windless-type orange pennant, unlike the typical kayak flags you see on Amazon. And maybe adding a light on top for those cloudy days. Also, I might add a bird scare device that sparkles in the sun. Anything to help get a boater's attention to spot us quickly at a distance (that is where they are looking, to check their course, and for other boats). We also have air horns and whistles attached to our vests if needed. After watching your vid, might also try avoid fishing where we would be in a bad blind spot to a boater. That's just my two cents. Definitely agree boaters can be a danger. But responsibility goes both ways. Kayakers also need to try to minimize that danger as much as possible. Thanks for the vid. Gets you thinking.
Dang. I've seen and experienced this in this exact location several times over the years. Kudos to you for staying calm and letting this #$%& do his thing. Not sure I could let this slide without a 'comment' spewing from my face....lol. I get it though. You are correct to just be calm. We all could benefit from that advice.
Man believe me it’s hard lol. I had a bad run in with a boat in 2018 where we had words and proceeded to try to swamp me all the way back to the ramp in Rabbit Creek. People are crazy lol
Conflict avoided is conflict multiplied . As far as that guy knows without telling him nicely a thing or two , it’s all good what he done . Expect him to do the same again .
That’s the bad thing about boaters with kayaks. They don’t respect our space or our vessels. He was in the wrong 100%; you can report him to marine patrol to notify them of his dangerous behavior.
It’s not all boats, I had several respectful encounters on the same trip but I have definitely encountered a ton of boats that I’m sure did things around me they would have never done to other boaters.
@@southernsalt yeah true there are just a handful that respect our space and even ask if we are having any luck but there’s a lot more that aren’t like that. I’ve had a boat follow us on one of my night charters and casted over our lines trying to snag a fish in front of us.
I fish from my yak and my bigger boat, so I can come at this from both sides. He should have been up and looking more, without question. YOU, you were out fishing in a gray yak, on gray water, wearing gray clothing under a gray sky.... YOU sir, were not only hard to see, you were practically camouflaged in a tiny boat that is hard to see on the best of days. This is why, as annoying as it is, having a flag, or something like it on your yak can be a life savor. I'm not saying it was your fault, IF he had hit you, it would have been on him. But, would that have given you much solace when you are the one seriously injured? You handled it well, and it appeared he did apologize, so best to just keep fishing. I'm betting you would not have been nearly as upset if the fishing had been good. I know that's how it works with me.
@@southernsalt hey brother, you don't have to thank me the truth, but I appreciate it! If I ever get down that way I would love to go fishing with ya!! You have a good mindset and I love to fish the ocean, rarely get the chance to, stuck in Ohio!
It was bad enough that he nearly hit you, but then to begin fishing where you were clearly headed..No other (repeatable) word for that guy other than "Douche Bag"...And I totally agree on the importance of the PFD. I forgot about caution while reaching to net my PB speckled trout..next thing I knew I was swimming in very cold water and watching my kayak drift away..scary!
The boater was wrong because he disrespected you by cutting you off and 2nd his wake was disrespectful. When he dropped the trolling motor he knew what he was doing strike 3. For you I would recommend getting a flag for more visibility. Be safe bro!
I feel like you did the right thing that’s what I would’ve done. You definitely were not In the wrong I bet he saw you off at a distance and plain cut you off to fish that spot. Have had that happen several times before, But moving on was the right move and get away from the situation because you’re right that guy could be crazy, or not.
You’re right about not getting into an argument because ppl are crazy! But I probably would have had to go 20-30 yards past him and start fishing again 😂🤣
In my humble opinion, the gentleman who approached you should have apologized and then asked you, if it would be ok it he could fish this location. You were there first, and he could have hit you and your kayak. Safety comes first. As for how you handled this situation, i applaud you and your mindset 👏 I don't know if you noticed, but soon after that situation occurred, the sun came out. I believe that's God's way of saying He is pleased how you conducted yourself, and He is happy. Great job, my friend, and better luck next time. 👍🏾
I have limited experience in different kayaks but Eddie at Hammerhead Kayaks has a ton you can check out or demo. Definitely demo several kayaks and find the one you’re comfortable with.
No the jack wagon driving the boat was totally wrong… it’s called ethics my friend. Never cut someone off that’s already fishing in a certain direction.
Sometimes you just got to walk away, as you did. Go and have words with the guy you got a 50% chance he will apologize, or a 50% chance he will get his back up and aggressive, which will ruin the day for you both.
First of all, Your right! (SOME) PEOPLE ARE CRAZY! Second, You handled the situation the right way. You argue with a fool, and it's just two fools arguing. Good teaching video. Good information. 👍

Thanks man! And very wise words from your dad!
4:34 when I hunt a public levee for waterfowl , it never fails to have some random hunter sit within 5” yards of me. Miles and miles of levee and they basically sit on my lap. Safe distance being 300 feet minimum. First come first serve. I guess the best thing to do is ask nicely
Hats off for being mature handling the situation.. similar experiences happen with motorcycles vs cars and bikes vs cars.
Thanks brother I appreciate it!!
Man brother. I’m glad that this video turned informative. Not, accidental! Be safe out there brother. Stay positive, you’re well respected and I have to say you handled that situation, the best you could. 💪🎣🐟💯🔥🤙
Thanks brother!! I’ll be back in Galveston soon let’s link up
I’ve had this happen to much out on the kayak. It’s a boaters favorite saying to a kayaker as they fly past us. “I didn’t see you sorry” and I’ve had your exact situation happen couldn’t stand he started fishing where I was headed. But you handled it very well
Thanks man, yeah it happens all to often
Unfortunately that’s common over here in Pensacola and Choctaw Bays but usually with jet skis and pontoon boats.
Yeah it’s getting worst every year. I’m not far from you, I’ll actually be fishing PCola Friday
I appreciate your good behavior for remaining that calm. 👍🏻 you had been faced with ignorant and risky behavior by others.
Thanks man!
You handled it like a professional. I don't fish that area on the weekends because that happens there OFTEN.
Man it’s gotten crazy in there the past few years. Definitely one of the worst areas around
Good points.
Peace out!
Great point, thank you
You handled it in thr right manner. Never know what this person would have done if you had confronted him. Thanks for sharing
Thank you
You handled that really well man.
Man it’s probably the worst area of the Mobile Bay
Nate i couldn't agree more with your top 3... i have had all 3 happen to me and have learned a lot in my first year kayak fishing. Great way to handle that guy keep up the great work
Thanks man, I appreciate it! That first year is full of lessons lol
I couldn’t agree more!
Excellent video. That’s was a good example for me to see and reflect on before it happens to me.
Exactly the kind of Yak content I am needing. Thank you. Seriously, thank you.
🙌 🙌
Thanks for the Tips.. Don't know How you Handled the boater Off Camera Nate, but obviously you Said or Heard something from the Boater.. Glad that you Didn't get Wet there is my Concern.. As a Retired Fire Fighter, I Know about "Tunnel Vision".. That is a Real thing that Removes Everything else from your Perception Except your Focused Upon Objective..
I love your content thanks for all the info you put out
Awe man, did you see who it was?
@@southernsalt oh yeah I know exactly who it is. I really like his content. Would’ve hoped he knew better but he was fishing the bog and we were both trying to get out of the wind. What can you do? We caught 30 trout 2 over 18 so it didn’t ruin my day just kinda let me down with someone I enjoyed watching
ta all kayakers you have to take safety in your own hands. evry one stay safe, and thanks for your vids ceep up the good work.
Good advice-I hope that I can handle that situation as well as you did-Thank you
Great information Nate. You did the right thing and are killing it man. Keep up the good work.
Thanks brother I really appreciate it!
Good advice for everyone, thanks😊🎣🐟🐠
Thanks man I appreciate it!
I have had it happen more than once definitely at Night every time I hear a boat I locate it and keep a eye on it you just never know what they are going to do
You got that right!
Yes happens to me a few times on my inflatable skiff with an outboard yep that’s the best advice you gave thank you.
Thanks man!
I have the same happen on my 1436 Jon boat, kudos to you for how you handled it…… but it does get the blood boiling sometimes, tight lines brother 😎
You handled that a LOT better than I would have Ole, buddy. .
It wasn’t easy lol
A lot of truths to what your saying but keep in mind its always gonna be people inexperienced/drunks on the water and with a kayak you can’t get out the way quick enough sometimes. Enter with a kayak at your own risk in waters such as these.
There is definitely a certain level of risk with this as with anything in life.
Dang man, most the guides in my area are very respectful so don’t have that issue but that would drive me crazy!
Man as I kayaker I can’t tell you how much I appreciate that
I deal with it all the time in Mobile, it's crazy out there some days.
You ain’t lying lol there are some water ways where I definitely try to avoid around here lol
In this instance I didn’t have a flag up.
@@southernsalt okay, I'm just getting into Kayaking and videos like this helps newbies like myself. Safety can't be drilled enough. I have a question, if you solo kayak alot, would It be a good idea to have lake enforcement do a check-in periodically?
Lot of wise words in this video! Can't wait to get into yakkin next year.
🙌 🙌 man I started kayaking in 2013 and never looked back lol
Man it’s the same around here lol and we get respect by most boaters, there’s just always that few.
WIND. I went out on lake michigan.. and couldnt get back to shore..Paddling in place for like an hour.. Boaters wont stop for you! luckily i had my phone and coast guard was nearby!
Dang man glad you made it out.
And that's why I am selling my kayak. On the lakes around here, the boaters don't pay attention and people on jet skis do pay attention and try to swamp you.
I’ll never sell the kayak lol but I’d say it’s the say down here lol
You’re a much better man than I am, good on you I admire that
Thanks man, it wasn’t easy lol
He was in wrong for sure. Running at speed and not able to see other boaters is one hell of an issue. You were a bit further off bank than 10 or 20 yards but close enough he aught to have been slower for debris in water at very least
Had a boat do the same to me and I was way closer to the bank, he almost swamped me trying to get into the spot I had just pedaled a long distance to reach. I was not happy.
Man I think that’s the worst part of it is how it takes us to get places just to get cut off.
Heck yeah man! I’m hoping to get on a good bite with the Trace soon. It looks wicked in the water
oh man i just got my fist fishing kayak (106 pdl sportsman) and although i dont have to worry much about boaters on my private lake, u now have me worried about flipping and loosing hundreds of $ in watever falls out of my yak if i flip... how often would u say people flip? im only 5'6 so my center of gravity is pretty low so hopefully the people that flip are the taller ones? lol
Don’t stress or worry about, just prepare for it. It’ll happen, it happens to all of us but the most important part is to always wear your PFD and practice re-entering your kayak. Start with non rigged and the practice with a fully rigged kayak.
You did the right thing. Keep on moving let other folks bee.
Couldn't see your entire kayak stem to stern but I didn't see any type of position making flag to make yourself more visible to other boats
Remember for many boaters and fisherman Kayaks on larger bodies of water are still a relatively new thing and kayaks are very hard to see especially if your mind set is to look for larger boats and not smaller close to the water kayaks
You handled it better than I have. I've given people the finger that have done that to me.
😂 😂
Him getting a piece of your mind was definitely deserved. But your right getting mad won't fix anything. U handled ur self well.
Thanks brother, it was hard not too lol
Wake boats are the worst , had one almost capsize me …passed by 25 ft pulling a wake board …no recognition….there’s always that one guy who is going to cut ya off because he can …….set the hook brother
Man the best part about fishing in the winter… no wake boats lol they are pretty bad around here also
Respect how you handled it. Just gotta bite our lip. Come to learn its part of kayak fishing. Some people don't view you with the same respect as a boat. I wouldn't have moved spots tho. Im not paddling another half mile just to get cutoff again.
Yeah I’d have to agree but if I’d stayed it would have probably escalated.
Good thing you are able to keep your kool. Admirable
Thanks man!
Dude.... I've been kayaking more and more this year. It is 50:50 on whether or not a boat will wake you or not. I try and stand up when a boat is coming by and seems to help. Kayakers get little respect.
I’d have to agree with you there. There are a lot of boats that show respect and there are a ton that don’t lol
Technically you were the give-way vessel, with him on your starboard side. That being said there are way too many people on boats that do not care about anyone else but themselves. You handled it well.
Thanks lance, it’s definitely gotten worse over the years
Brother you was the better man here. You did the right thing by just keeping it moving. With him being in a boat he could have gotten mad at you & try to run you over. You was out there to have fun & not ket someone ruin your fun. Good job brother. Be safe out there brother.
Thanks brother, hope all is well with you Mack!
i use the yakgear orange visibility kit .. orange flag and light 5ft, I dont bother to justify another actions.. i just watch out for my own safety, and move on.
Thanks man, my thoughts exactly
Perfect point. This is something I didn’t have and a safety item I should have on me.
Well hell yeah lol that’s some good karma there lol
Sharks don't bother me, but alligators do. A shark won't chase you up on the bank.
😂 well where you fish around Gulf Shores is loaded with gators lol
@@southernsalt I know. There's a 7 footer that ate a redfish that I hooked. I got a good tow from him before I broke the line.
i think if they came dangerously close to hitting you, you SHOULD say something and then let it go.
@@southernsalt When you pulled out that 12lb crankbait as you approached him I just knew you were gonna sling that bait upside his head! lol!!!
imagine flipping your kayak in snake/alligator waters. I wonder about what's down there in areas where I know there isn't anything lol
Conflict avoided is conflict multiplied . As far as that guy knows without telling him nicely a thing or two , it’s all good what he done . Expect him to do the same again .
Interesting perspective
😯
I agree with everything you had to say, very true 👍
Thanks man!
@@southernsalt hey brother, you don't have to thank me the truth, but I appreciate it! If I ever get down that way I would love to go fishing with ya!! You have a good mindset and I love to fish the ocean, rarely get the chance to, stuck in Ohio!
Right thing to do would’ve been to start doing a 360 around him and told him you didn’t see him either
One suggestion - maybe carry a very loud airhorn with you for situations where someone doesn't appear to see you.
Good suggestion!
You are very nice guy I don't like being push too much I would have said I am very sorry if I was in the boat you are a great gentleman
Yeah man, I know things happen and we all make mistakes. The worst part is he just acted like nothing happened lol
Man it can happen that fast lol I know I’ve flipped before.
You might be right about that!
Buddy he said he didn't see you but it doesn't make sense. You did the correct move and keeped your cool.
Thanks bud! Yeah doesn’t make sense to me either
You’re right about not getting into an argument because ppl are crazy! But I probably would have had to go 20-30 yards past him and start fishing again 😂🤣
😂
In my humble opinion, the gentleman who approached you should have apologized and then asked you, if it would be ok it he could fish this location. You were there first, and he could have hit you and your kayak. Safety comes first. As for how you handled this situation, i applaud you and your mindset 👏
I don't know if you noticed, but soon after that situation occurred, the sun came out. I believe that's God's way of saying He is pleased how you conducted yourself, and He is happy. Great job, my friend, and better luck next time. 👍🏾
Thank you! I didn’t notice it but you’re right the sun did come out lol
What kayak would you suggest for someone 300 plus pounds?
I have limited experience in different kayaks but Eddie at Hammerhead Kayaks has a ton you can check out or demo. Definitely demo several kayaks and find the one you’re comfortable with.
some people are so dangerous how can he not be looking out for anything in front of him then he stops an fish where you were
