April 2017 on the Perth CATs

  • The free Perth Central Area Transit (CAT) system comprises four colour-coded routes which distribute passengers within and around the Perth Central Business District (CBD). Similar systems also exist in Fremantle and Joondalup. Transdev are contracted to provide the Perth CAT services.
    The current fleet of 40 buses comprises of:
    Mercedes-Benz OC500LE CNG Euro 5 11.5m / Volgren "CR228L"
    Volvo B7RLE Euro 5 11.4m / Volgren "CR228L"
    Volvo B8RLE Euro 6 11.6m / Volgren "Optimus"
    The following Perth CAT routes operate:
    Blue CAT - North-South every 7-8 mins on weekdays, every 10 mins on weekends and every 15 mins on Fri/Sat nights
    Red CAT - East-West every 5 mins on weekdays, every 10 mins on weekends with additional weekday buses on the West Perth loop every 12 mins and supplementary buses to/from West Perth every few mins in the peak
    Yellow CAT - East Perth to West Perth every 7 mins on weekdays with supplementary buses in the PM shopping peak and a 10 min weekend frequency
    Green CAT - Leederville Stn to Elizabeth Quay every 8 mins on weekdays only.

    I spent a couple of years driving the original CAT buses (Scania) when the system was first introduced to Perth and it was one of the best jobs I ever had. Many of the passengers used them every day and I made some interesting friends.
