A great trip down memory lane. I Remember building this one as a the lightning was one of my favourite planes back then.

I have only built this one so far but have 5 from different manufacturers. Can't wait to build them.

It my early years in modeling I built a few of these.Great starter kits for then but some not great fitting, but that is of the time. The matchbox P-47 went together well and the F-16A/B and this kit and I remember the Bf-109 was good. The P-38 was a nightmare to build. But so wonderful to see this classic kit again.Thank you and all the best from the U.K🇬🇧👍

I haven't built too many Matchbox kits but this one wasn't too bad. Great starter kits as you mentioned but I look at it as taking an average kit and making it look great. A bit challenging at times. Thanks for watching.

i had so many Matchbox kits back in time!, the box arts were really inspiring, loved it i also had many Hellers and Airfix kits in the early 80's good memories, just from the box, with no PE parts, no fancy decals, mostly unpainted, just real fun!!

Hi and Thanks for watching. Most to all model kits of this era were pretty much the same. Simple, not too many pieces, and basic decals. I think they were geared towards kids. This hobby has taken a turn and now most of the new kits have incredible detail and there are new techniques to make the model look very realistic. There are also so many aftermarket parts such as detailed decals, highly detailed resin parts, crystal clear canopies, and photo etched parts. I like to build kits with what it comes with and do my own detailing.

@@hammerheadhobbiesthe reason for the coloured sprues was to make them stand out from their competion....they also appelead to younger modellers whoo didnt want to paint it.

@@hammerheadhobbiesin terms of the lack of internal detail you cant compare a 40 or 50 year old kit with a kit of today...yes its a product of its time but to be fair all kits from back then had a lack of interior detail.

@@jaws666 You are correct in saying that a model from 40 to 50 years ago can't compare to todays kits however i am not comparing to any kit just stating that it has a lack of interior detail. There are kits in this age category that do have better interior detail and if you check out the monogram F-4J kit from 1985 it has incredible interior detail even better than some of todays kits. I am working on an Italearei Ju188 from 1973 that has some cockpit detail. It's a hit and miss on these older kits. I do try and add extra detail as much as I can, but that's just me. Thanks

@@jaws666 That makes sense! I thought maybe to make the plastic close to the color so you can easily hand brush the paint and it would look OK. Thanks

The multi colour thing was so kids could make them without the need to paint them. A friend of mine made several this way, but he didn’t have my dad making sure he did a proper job… I still love Matchbox kits; the only duff one was the Westland Wessex, but I think that was a post- Revell production and not ‘proper’ Matchbox. Otherwise, they were a revelation when they came out in the mid-ish 70s and much better than Airfix. What helped is that they were often sold in newsagents, so they were available on Sunday mornings when all the other shops were shut.

Thanks for the info. I remember getting models but they had the paints, glue, and brush included (testors). My dad didn't get involved either but we had the best time building them. We used to heat up a pin and poke holes in the planes to simulate bullet holes. When we were bored of the model we would put glue on the back, light it on fire and toss it from the 2nd story balcony to simulate the plane crashing (when my father wasn't home, obviously)... GREAT TIMES! 🤣😅😂

I agree, as a kid at the time, not having to paint them was a nice option. The base kits were two colours, the more advanced were moulded in three colours.
I have a few in my stash including a Buccaneer, and an FJ4 Fury, both in 1/72 scale, and several of their 1/32 cars - which match the scale of the Airfix model cars and slot cars of the time. (Airfix car models were often built on a slot car chassis to produce something different.)
The other HUGE advantage of the Matchbox kits over Airfix and the others was that their car models came with chrome parts as standard as well as being moulded in 2-3 colours. Their armour kits also came with a display base, which was just magical for a kid at the time. The Sherman came with half a bridge, several of the German armour kits were based at an African oasis, the Humber armoured car was on a cratered road, and so on.
Some of these 1/76 scale kits (again matched Airfix and are OO/HO railway scale) are still available under the Revell brand, but are now just moulded in grey styrene, but they still have the diorama base.

thank you for posting. I cut my teeth with many Matchbox and Revell kits as I started in the hobby in Christmas 1980. The 3-Color kits like the one above have more sprues and parts and thus are a tad more expensive than the 2-Color Kits and are +/- PhP 30.00 then. Also the supplied multi-position stands in the 3-color kits are bigger, of course. But what endeared me to Matchbox kits is the caption in the box arts describing the planes in action, like what was indicated in my 1/72 Mk IX Spitfire : "a Spitfire takes evasive action after attacking a Ju-88 over the English Coast" (being attacked by its nemesis the FW-190). Again, my thanks for this beautiful piece of nostalgia

Nice looking old time kit, Just re-entering hobby after retirement I'm a beginner and could definitely use these kinds of kits to get back in the game. The kit did look slightly off scale - the Lighting was not a small fighter it would be interesting to see the fuselage compared to the other kit. Nice unboxing,

Hi and thanks for watching. Welcome back to the hobby. I too took some time off and got back into it a few years ago and haven't stopped. These older kits are nice for beginners and for more experienced modelers. I hope this was helpful for you and enjoy modelling.

As a model maker at the time (8 or so!)... Matchbox (if I recall) were the cheapest and not the best but they looked ok un-painted, Airfix were far better, but at that age, need to develop some painting skills, then probably Revel, and finally we got Tamiya kits in the UK! Of course that has all changed now! Thought still best of are likely Tamiya or Revel but very very closely followed by Airfix (Their new F35 is wonderful!!)🙂

Hi and thanks for watching. As I replied to @jefthing, we use to get kits with the paints, glue, and brush (testors) included. I can recall how much they were but do remember building and painting them. I also recall destroying them because....hey, we were kids!

whats the point in judging detail on a kit that's getting on for 50 yrs old ?

    • @hammerheadhobbies
      @hammerheadhobbies  ปีที่แล้ว

Hi and thanks for watching. I am giving my opinion on the model kit. I started making these videos to help people in deciding which model to purchase from my own experience. I have purchased some kits which, if I would have known the quality would not have purchased. Regardless of the age of the kits, some are better than others in many aspects (detail in all parts, decals, instruction, canopy...etc) and I hope these videos can help someone make an informed decision on which kit to purchase. I hope you enjoy the videos and keep checking back for new content.

Don't forget to put weight on the nose.

    • @hammerheadhobbies

Hi and thanks for watching. Great point about the weight on the nose. All the front wheel planes I have come across need weight on the front. I have forget a couple of times and it's a pain to add it later.
