BobbyGuyFilms hey I’m thinking about buying the Winchester sx4 or the franchi affinity 3. And i. Was wondering if you have any insight or recommendations between the two?
Great video Bobby. Yes, please do a steel test. I'd like to see Heavy Metal and the new Kent Bismuth HD if possible. I know each gun, choke, and load will pattern differently but I'm curious about them
I've been a shotgunner for 30 years. Patterning videos never get old. Bring on the Steel shot good Sir. I shoot Jebs Chokes, haven't found a better choke yet.
I've shot factory chokes for years cause I never thought the after market ones were really all that much better, but early this summer I invested in a kicks high flyer full choke and it has me excited for this upcoming season. The patterns I have been getting out of it on paper and the performance on the skeet range have me throughly impressed thus far.
I have 8 different size choke tubes. I was out testing 00 buckshot today, with them. Good times...... Around .030 of restriction seems to be the sweet spot for about any load. For a standard bore shotgun(.730), that means a full choke(.700) should serve you pretty well, for most applications. Great video!!! I thoroughly enjoy patterning(and slugs).
My old man was one of the best shotgun shooters I’ve ever seen. He would always say” Open chokes are for those who can’t shoot” lol. He used full choke for everything.
Old timer I knew took deer and even a couple elk at 75-85 yards with real hot, 3 ½ magnum 000 buck. Real long 28 inch barrel, full choke. I swear each pellet must've hit like a .30-30 or something cause they fell instantly that far out.
@@GallopingWalrus When I was a kid I dropped a large doe walking up a shallow river towards me at around 65 yards. Was my dad's old, beat up, ratally, High Standard 12 gauge, 28" barrel, no choke (smoothbore), Winchester Super X 00 Buckshot, 2 3/4". I wasn't the best shot yet back then but 4 out of 9 pellets hit her. One in through the neck, one top of the neck into her spine, one into the center of her chest between her front legs, and one right between the eyes. She dropped instantly like a sack of potatoes. Did two kicks after hitting the water and that was it. Then she started floating downriver so I had to quickly do the fastest 100 yard dash in my life from my blind...😁 Guys get weird about 00 Buck. If you hunt with it regularly in the right shotgun it's a one shot show stopper everytime. Nothing less than 12 Guage though (I've had some nightmare experiences with a Remington 20 gauge when I was young). And while patterning is important, I think all this playing around with choke sizes is kind of moot if you're talking 00 Buck and shots within the usual 50 yard range. That's more of a birdshot concern, IMO. I have a Mossberg 835 right now with the factory Modified 750 choke that throws 00 Buckshot about basketball to "Beach ball" size at 70 yards with the occasional flyer here and there. That's more than enough pattern for me! Anything over a 50 yard shot is more on the rare occasion side. Would like to try one of those Buck Kicker chokes one day though!
Totally agree on the full..... I went on a snow goose hunt and the guide tried to talk me into another choke and at the end of the day he said it's been awhile since I've been impressed
Great video its exactly what people need to see for those that have not done their own pattern test using the chokes. and good info on aim points with full choke should help people with the guess work. keep at it man !
it dont get old my brother because SHOTGUNS ARE KING!!!!! i got a ultra mag 3.5 inch mossy pump, and i love it, full choke of course :D she hucks oo buck super well also, 60 yard kills
I like full choke too. Usually we can let a bird get further away if we need to. And it is wise to pattern your various loads. The other day I was getting some excellent number one buckshot patterns with a modified choke. I haven't tried the full choke yet.
Agreed,my old sxs is full chocked and my buddy always says good luck mate at the clay club but when it gets to those distant crossers I’m smashing them with ease,as you said though,it takes a bit of practice for those closer ones
Kicks extended high flyer full out of my Browning silver 12ga with Kent fasteel or if I feel like taking a beating that day a kicks extended high flyer full out of my Browning BPS 10ga with Federal premium. I know lots of people that shoot this choke and they all agree it's the best choke out there!
Carlson Cremator Long range constriction is .700 witch is the same constriction of a Improve Modified. Look at the spec. Carlson Cremator is a freaking good choke that said ! Good show Bobby, keep sending it!!
Thanks for the awesome video Bobby! I recently found your channel and really enjoy it. I'm just above you here in South Dakota. I hunt pheasants a lot but going to try some ducks and geese next year hopefully. Again great job, keep it going.
Kicks high flyer full and pattern master code black goose pattern great. I have had major success with Kent steel shells and federal steel and lead. I also like Winchester Texas heavy dove but Winchester experts steel can be hit or miss. I also like Remington nitro mags. How about a beginner video on snow geese , specks, honkers.
We hunt pigeon and crow more than geese (although we do shoot geese) here in England , but this is very handy to see as I'm debating keeping full choke in the bottom barrel. Nice upload
Bobby, thank you! I was struggling last night which choke to order for my 12 gauge Remington 1100 shotgun . I'm trying to get everything ready for Dove season.
Depending on what size shot your shooting the choke needs to change. If I’m hunting high flying birds with O/U I use a light full and a improved modified. If I’m busting skeet I’ll use modified and improved cylinder. When using my semi auto. I use a modified for bird hunting. I use extra full for turkeys. And when shooting 000 buck shot I always use a skeet choke. Larger shot like 000 will compress together in a tight choke and pull off one another after it leaves the barrel.
My wife got a franchi and her pattern was in the same general area. We used the shim kit that the franchis come with to get it shooting 60/40 which to me is perfect for clay games and shooting birds
The carlson chokes are Light Mod. For the mid range and Improved Mod. for the Long range. If you want a tighter longer range choke look at the JEBS High Voltage selection. I have a .690 for geese and shoot my Cremators for dove and duck.
Should show patterns with waterfowl ammo too. Also see what effect barrel length has if you can find some significant variations. 26-28-30 is not likely to show much difference! I have a 20" 12GA threaded for chokes, but not sure how common that is! I had it made for home defense.
Your my favorite waterfowl youtuber Bobby! I use a patternmaster choke by far my favorite choke I've ever owned.. its desisned to drop birds dead on the water no cripples what so ever. Never been so impressed. Please check the patternmaster choke tubes out, you wont regret it!
Grand pops late 1930s Browning auto (5) with full.Choke. Is nice .and his 1940s Single barrel winchester model 37 red letters old girl thirty two inch barrel full choke hits great sucks one shot single barrel but his and my uncles bird 12g shot guns real nice old school. Great content thanks for the Showing the difference of full choke
Thanks for sharing Bobby. Definitely an interesting video to see the difference between the two chokes. Pretty good patterns with both actually with your pigeon loads, but the full definitely SMACKED that target with more force. I know for a fact in my limited hunting that shoot placement and practice is key, but those Canadas have what I call Iron Feather especially in the winter and can be tough to bring down. I would like to see a steel load video of the same format or if you do a patterning vid comparing say a higher priced load like Hevi-Metal and a lower one like Kent, Rio, Winchester Super X with both chokes. I went with a Patternmaster long range/extended range choke (thankfully I worked at Cabela's at the time and got a sweet discount because those are EXPENSIVE) and it patterns well with the Hevi Metal. I can't use loads with flight control wads with that choke, but I can with the factory modified. I have thought about getting a cheaper extended modified/mid range choke perhaps like that Carlson. I also have a couple buddies that like the Kicks High-Flyer.
You are welcome Bobby, I always enjoy your videos they are funny and informative. I am glad that you like my suggestion. Some people try and find the best patterning shell for their gun and compare it with cost. Can they get away with some lesser priced shells, instead of buying a $250 case of Hevi Metal 2 shot. I look forward to what you come up with Bro.
Bobby thanks for responding with info on chokes from prior video...in keeping with that same theme I would love to see a video exploring steel shot ..but take it a step further... difference between the 12 gauge 3 inch verse 3 1/2 but also difference with shot size..6,4,2,bb shot...I'm thinking there may be a huge difference in shot retention in the sweet zone at yardage with different sizes ....keep up the great vids
Bobby have you done a steel shot comparison with chokes? I've done it with my Berretta Extrema 2 with all the loads I shoot but have noticed a difference in steel vs lead at 30-40 yards. I know you're a fan of Federal but mine patterns steel best with Rem Hypersonics 1 shot and lead Federal Premiums Pheasant Forever 6's.
I spend the extra money and use hypersonic 3" 2 shots for ducks. I have never had such a success rate at downing long birds. I've had the occasional 65 to 70 yard shot, but the first day I switched to hypersonics it was a 22 mph wind and I downed 4 birds over 60 yards... and I mean dead. Idk if it's the 1700 fps or what, but my gun loves them. The canvasback i shot at had to be at least 65 deep and when he hit the water all I saw was red blood fly in the air. Never going back
Cylinder bore for slugs, and either a full or improved modified choke for the steel, since beretta mobil chokes are steel proof in all constrictions less than xtra-full. I would look at carlson's choke tubes
Have you checked to see if u r left eye dominant. I am. Im a right handed shooter. I pattern high and left without a scope. I’ll definitely get a full choke now. Thanks! Good video.
Bobby if I’m not mistaken most shotguns out arc meant to aim 60:40. Meaning 60% of your shot is above the target and 40% of the shot is below the target. This is to help when you put a bead on a bird or a target it is sitting above your barrel so you can see it. Or above your bead so you can see it. Seems to me that you’re aiming correct and the gun is placing the shot in the correct factory percentage i.e. high and low above the target. You can adjust where your pellets land on a target but I’m going to trust the manufacture since they have a lot more experience and a lot more years of experience than I do
I'm curious what the meat looks like with a full choke at closer(30 yrds or less)? When I shot a full choke during duck season I had some messed up birds. I switched because the two days prior, they weren't coming in close and were staying at about 40 yrds out. Then on the third day, I switched from the mod to the full choke. That day they were all over, some in closer and some still further out. The closer kills were pretty gnarly on a few.
Yes I totally agree there is a give-and-take with possibly messing the breast meat up. But one thing I absolutely hate this crippling birds in half and to chase them or losing them. A full choke just has the knockdown power
That is a conundrum. lol. I hate messing up meat but I hate wounding a bird and not being able to find it even more. I'm after clean kills! I don't want the animal to suffer unnecessarily. I'll have to re-pattern my full choke and see what kind of density I get in the pattern at different distances. Maybe take two guns with me. lol
Bob, comparing small lead shot to steel shot especially as it pertains to choke choice is folly at best. First off, steel by it's very nature is hard compared to lead therefore it does not deform like lead hence it patterns tighter. Second, the larger the steel pellet , that same steel pellet patterns even tighter yet. Often when you attempt to shoot heavy pay loads of large steel such as BB's or larger you get diminishing returns as it relates to pattern quality. Often a more open choke such as modified produces better, more uniform and often tighter patterns. Telling people that full choke is the end all especially when it comes to shooting hard non toxic shot is misleading at best. Another concern would be that novice out there who has an older full , fixed choke shotgun shooting heavy loads of large steel is very likely to damage his barrel- no kidding. You need to tell people that especially the new shooters. I like your channel but you are truly giving advice about shotguns as it relates to choke that you know very little about. Another thought, I could kill a goose just as dead at 30 yards with a skeet choke as I could with a full choke. Telling people to aim a shotgun causes deliberation which in turn stops your shotgun barrel from moving often produces misses from behind or worse, cripples. I have watched you shoot. In the old days we used to pride ourselves on bagging birds with one single well placed shot. This in our minds was achieving the art of wing shooting, not "spray and pray " Not bagging on you bro ,but you need to understand shotshell ballistics a little better. You are influencing the new generation of hunters. A lot of responsibility. Make sure you do it right and not just be a conduit to sell choke tubes. There you go go bro. Good hunting this season. I'm a fellow Kanzonion with 40+ years of doing this with both lead( when it was legal) and now with non toxic shot in all forms. Take care.
I might have missed it but what after market full chokes do you use then Bobby? My factory IM and Full chokes on the super black eagle 2 day not to use steel. What brand of aftermarket full are you using here? Looking to get set up for my first season ever this year.
definitely would love to see some steel shot number 2 or BB.. steel definitely patterns differently than lead skeet shot.. Love the show Bobby keep up the good work you the Man....
can you do a steel shot test? and also test different varieties of duck load? like hevi-x, hevi metal, federal, winchester, etc? i think it would be very appreciated by the viewers(especially this close to the season) and would really do a true-to-life pattern test among brands. (this kinda stuff might not be super important to some, but everyone around my neck of the woods hunts with a 20ga, -even geese, and we take it real serious.)
I tried the full choke last season and wasn’t killing birds. Modified for me. I guess I need a little room for error... sent a few bbs right through a red heads neck and head the other day. DRT!
Have seen lots of video on choke selection, but not too many about barrel length and choke selection. I Have Browning with 2 barrels one is full choke and a 26 inch barrel with rifle sights. The other is a 32 inch barrel with a full choke vented rib sight. Which would you use for ducks geese pheasants grouse l prefer the 26" cuz it is easier to carry.Short barrel will spread shot more??
Tony Her do you shoot ducks over decoys with it? I have a kicks mod and am looking at getting the full or extra full i cant decide. Any insight from your experience with the extra full would be helpful. Here in NC when late season comes around you can barely get bird to decoy so id like to get something to up my chances at a flaring bird at 40ish plus yards. Thanks!
It just depends on the situation but when there not decoying and when there flying up high extra full gets the job done if you're aiming is on point. Also has the power to knock the big goose down without any problems..
Bobby love the vido's keep em coming bud especially the Dove and pigon hunting there my absolute favorite , but I do watch your waterfowl videos as I hope too try goose hunting this fall in Ohio for the first time I wanna say I just ordered these chokes for my Mossberg 930 12 ga I hope they do as good for me as they did for you I'll be buying a few different boxes of 7.5 shot too test in them can't wait too get them . Thanks again sir
Would like to see a video of comparing chokes to chokes with steel shot like the carlson's kicks high flyer and maybe mojo full or even extra full chokes
Correction! A mid-range choke tube made by Carlsons Choke Tubes is equivalent to an Light Modified and a long range is equivalent to a Improved Modified. If you go to Carslons website and compare the constriction numbers against the sporting clay models you will find that they match up.
Hey no worries man! TBH have both myself and I can't wait to try them out this year. That LM should do great for decoying birds and the IM should be awesome for diver ducks and geese.
I just bought the carlsons creamator long and mid choke set says the mid is modified at 20-40 yard and the longe is full at 30-50 plus maybe they're other model chokes are different? I know the creamator has there new triple shot technology
Go onto Carlsons website and compare the constriction for the cremator and the sporting clay choke tubes. You will see the Light Mod is the same constriction as the Mid Range and the Improved Mod is the same as the Long Range for constriction. There is little difference between the sporting clay and cremator choke tubes. They are the same but with different labels. Is that a problem... not at all. Having a close range, mid, and long range makes if simple. Both are rated for steel, and other non-toxic shot.
I recently purchased my first "nicer" shotgun. The rest have been cheap tactical style before this. But anyway I got a Beretta a300 Ultima, and I've been experimenting with different chokes. So far the Carlson extended chokes seem to work best for me. I would like some input on what choke works well for slugs? Also should the choke be rifled or not? 👍😁🇺🇲
I only deer hunt with shotguns,I have 2 that are deer only guns 1 is a 1980s coast to coast master mag 12 ga 30" fixed full choke, that will cut the center out of a 12" pie tin at 100 yards with number 4 buck 41 pellets,my other is the 835 mossberg 28" barrel and 4" extend full choke I use 3&1/2" number 4 buck with 54 pellets at 120 yards it throws 30 plus pellets in a 12 pie tin,but both guns have had work, barrels pinned the older coast to coast was cold choked meaning instead of just the last 4" being a choke I have 15 inches of barrel that acts as a choke .60 And the chamber ring is extended 1000th on both it allows less obstruction when the shell is fired and the crimp opens so the pellets don't hit a speed bump, but great video like to see a test between these modern screw in chokes compared to the old fixed long barrel guns,in my experience longer the barrel better the pattern
If you wanted to make a video about pattering different duck and goose loads. Maybe make a few paper only targets so the same shot can keep going through each paper target at different yardages. I'm particularly interested in the MAX loads for 3" shells; the ones with the super big pay load of shot. AKA the really expensive steel shells thx, liked

I also have a couple buddies that like the Kicks High-Flyer.
Bro thank you sooo much for the input! These are the comments I love! That’s a great video idea my friend I will do it
You are welcome Bobby, I always enjoy your videos they are funny and informative.
You talked me into it. Had to pause to go buy one.
Never going back
Im curious to see a slug accuracy comparison between cylinder, ic, and mod.
aren't you only supposed to shoot slugs thru cylinder chokes?
I thought they'd tear up any other choke.
@@OHgabe92 basically only cylinder and ic
Dont shoot a slug thru mod lol
I've got an over and under 12g & run improved cylinder & full 👍
Can you please make a video on what you bring dove hunting?? It’s almost season and I don’t do it often I usually duck hunt not dove.
Excellent job
May I know good choke for my Beretta A 400 for slug shot(Deer Hunt) and BB, # 2 (goose and Duck), Thanks
Cylinder bore for slugs, and either a full or improved modified choke for the steel, since beretta mobil chokes are steel proof in all constrictions less than xtra-full. I would look at carlson's choke tubes
Excellent Analysis
Remington hypersonics BB 3 1/2 with kicks extended range full choke I still lead birds depending on angle.
You can adjust where your pellets land on a target but I’m going to trust the manufacture since they have a lot more experience and a lot more years of experience than I do
Hey. You are making great videos. I really enjoy your videos.
Regard ; yours fan from Pakistan
Maybe take two guns with me. lol
yes steel shot comparison please
I would like to see a comparison with steel shot video
Will do
Bob, comparing small lead shot to steel shot especially as it pertains to choke choice is folly at best.
This in our minds was achieving the art of wing shooting, not "spray and pray "
Not bagging on you bro ,but you need to understand shotshell ballistics a little better.
Take care.
R Anderson Very well said!!!
Thank you! Finally somebody with some solid wisdom under their belt. Dang kids!
Couldn't say it any better
Loved the video showing full choke and modified. Does is matter how long the barrel?
Get a rob Roberts choke they are the best on the market. I shoot a t2 at everything very tight
Bobby are u gonna run a full with steel shot??
Always do
I might have missed it but what after market full chokes do you use then Bobby? My factory IM and Full chokes on the super black eagle 2 day not to use steel. What brand of aftermarket full are you using here? Looking to get set up for my first season ever this year.
Awesome video! And great content, I was thinking about using a modified for the season, but now I am thinking different lol
I’m tellin ya when you build confidence in a full you’ll never go back
definitely would love to see some steel shot number 2 or BB.. steel definitely patterns differently than lead skeet shot..
Love the show Bobby keep up the good work you the Man....
20 gauge vs 12 gauge for ducks and geese
can you do a steel shot test? and also test different varieties of duck load? like hevi-x, hevi metal, federal, winchester, etc? i think it would be very appreciated by the viewers(especially this close to the season) and would really do a true-to-life pattern test among brands. (this kinda stuff might not be super important to some, but everyone around my neck of the woods hunts with a 20ga, -even geese, and we take it real serious.)
Yes sir I’ll do it
YES
Love it Bobby
Much appreciated brooo!
In so glad I'm not the only one who goes "bang bang" when I shoot my shotgun lol
hey bobby do you use BB in your long range choke and could you do some steel shot patterns
Yes I do
I tried the full choke last season and wasn’t killing birds. Modified for me. I guess I need a little room for error... sent a few bbs right through a red heads neck and head the other day. DRT!
I started with a full choke so I am used to it and love it
Have seen lots of video on choke selection, but not too many about barrel length and choke selection.
My go to choke I use kicks high flyer extra full all season
Tony Her do you shoot ducks over decoys with it? I have a kicks mod and am looking at getting the full or extra full i cant decide. Any insight from your experience with the extra full would be helpful. Here in NC when late season comes around you can barely get bird to decoy so id like to get something to up my chances at a flaring bird at 40ish plus yards. Thanks!
It just depends on the situation but when there not decoying and when there flying up high extra full gets the job done if you're aiming is on point. Also has the power to knock the big goose down without any problems..
Same for me! Love it.
Art Mann i love that the patten cheap steel load amazingly so i dont have to buy $25 boxes of ammo.
Do you also recommend full choke for grouse hunting ? If so what shot would you recommend
whatever you kind mostnman
I'll be trying full choke with shit 8 for grouse this year, see how it goes
Bobby love the vido's keep em coming bud especially the Dove and pigon hunting there my absolute favorite , but I do watch your waterfowl videos as I hope too try goose hunting this fall in Ohio for the first time I wanna say I just ordered these chokes for my Mossberg 930 12 ga I hope they do as good for me as they did for you I'll be buying a few different boxes of 7.5 shot too test in them can't wait too get them . Thanks again sir
I can’t wait for this season to get here man
I think your cartridges are fibre wad right? Am told a plastic cup wad holds it together further in the modified so it's almost a full...
Thanks for the info!
Both are rated for steel, and other non-toxic shot.
its because those are steel shot chokes they pattern differently than normal clays chokes The Klutzy Outdoorsman
Your the dude of the ducks
This is a very helpful vid, thank you! That earns a sub!!😊
Yes
I recently purchased my first "nicer" shotgun. The rest have been cheap tactical style before this. But anyway I got a Beretta a300 Ultima, and I've been experimenting with different chokes. So far the Carlson extended chokes seem to work best for me. I would like some input on what choke works well for slugs? Also should the choke be rifled or not? 👍😁🇺🇲
I only deer hunt with shotguns,I have 2 that are deer only guns 1 is a 1980s coast to coast master mag 12 ga 30" fixed full choke, that will cut the center out of a 12" pie tin at 100 yards with number 4 buck 41 pellets,my other is the 835 mossberg 28" barrel and 4" extend full choke I use 3&1/2" number 4 buck with 54 pellets at 120 yards it throws 30 plus pellets in a 12 pie tin,but both guns have had work, barrels pinned the older coast to coast was cold choked meaning instead of just the last 4" being a choke I have 15 inches of barrel that acts as a choke .60
And the chamber ring is extended 1000th on both it allows less obstruction when the shell is fired and the crimp opens so the pellets don't hit a speed bump, but great video like to see a test between these modern screw in chokes compared to the old fixed long barrel guns,in my experience longer the barrel better the pattern
Did you end up going a full vs modified with steel shot
If you wanted to make a video about pattering different duck and goose loads. Maybe make a few paper only targets so the same shot can keep going through each paper target at different yardages. I'm particularly interested in the MAX loads for 3" shells; the ones with the super big pay load of shot. AKA the really expensive steel shells thx, liked
Great idea I’ll do it mike!
Do a pattern test with steel shot and different chokes, carlsons, kicks, factory, etc..
Nice video! Could you do the same video but with 5shot?
