      It may not affect its function for opening cans but it does eliminate its other function as a wrench. I'm not a fan of this mod. I'd rather be able to use it on oxygen or a garden hose valve in an emergency than have that hook blade. If you want to open packages use the knives, just be careful.

      Yes, it would make sense for them to add an additional feature to the can opener since can openers are not as useful as they used to be (most cans have pull-tab tops nowadays). I use the can opener as an orange peeler more than for opening cans.

    Another great video, Felix, but for the next time you find yourself needing to use a diamond bur against steel like that, I have two suggestions that will make your work easier: 1) add a tiny amount (literally, a drop) of dish soap to the water, or even just smear a little on your fingertip and stir in into the water before you begin. By doing so, you’ll eliminate the surface tension of the water - essentially making it ‘wetter’, and 2) if you’ll uses a thrusting/plunging/pumping action with the side of the diamond bur against the steel workpiece, the grinding will go faster and the tool will last much longer. Oh, also, (#3) once you’ve got a small divot ground into the steel as a placeholder, try using slightly more pressure at a slower speed. It seems counterintuitive, but a slower moving tool often gouges out more material than a faster one (and this is especially true when drilling)!

    You know. I'm still fan of the old Wenger ones, I really hate the can opener from the victorinox. Wengers have a "hook" can opener, you pull it, it's way more comforable than the push can opener, safer and can do many of the things the hook one you modified here. Love your channel, subscribed!

    If you do this modification you can no longer use the can opener as an oxygen wrench. That’s what the 90 degree flat part is for. Also works if your garden hose valve (metallic valve yokes only) breaks, you can unscrew the valve handle and use the can opener as a handle. I leave my front yard valve handle off so transients don’t get water and leave the valve leaking.

    Cutting the belly skin of an animal with a hook blade does help to prevent injury to the person cutting, but that's easy to avoid with a little skill; the main reason is to avoid cutting too deep and piercing the organs of the animal being skinned.

    Seems like Victorinox could make even more tools within the same footprint that they have going on and this gave me many ideas. For instance the can opener could also have a few holes that are shaped like a hexagon in different spots that could be used for small nuts. I’m thinking about like the way that many key chain pry bars have them along their surface that you could use for different sized screwing jobs. Obviously it would have to be done right so that the blades would still be strong. I’m not quite at the end of the video yet but I’m wondering if it can still open a can without any problems or if there would be a chance of breaking it by opening a can.

  • @BillDrives
    @BillDrives 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I have tried this method and it works fine. However, I also tried another solution and it works better without risking the integrity of the can opener. Using a fine flat needle file, I filed a small flat bevel instead of a round curved bevel. Then followed by wrapping a high grit sandpaper 2000 around the file to then polish the blade, Its like a small knife and it cuts through packaging. This way it still has a flat side for when using the can opener and it is super sharp without compromising the tool.

    I was thinking... You know what, the can opener of my Vic can easily accomodate a sharp edge on the inside for opening packages and those tedious clamshell plastic retail packages, and was undecided if giving to it a hook shape or a straight edge, maybe with a negative angle to... Hook into stuff. I figured... Let's see if anything similar on the internet, and... Boom, Felix already did this! And... So beautifully! Is there ANY mods that you still did not think about?? 😃 Great video as always, thanks!!!

    Victorinox might make more money if they sold custom Swiss Army Knives instead of the preset SAKs. A lot of people would pay more money on custom SAKs especially if they can choose which tools to include on one knife. Ex. I would want a SAK that had the magnifying glass, awl, needle, scissors, pen, ruler, and the big knife for sewing projects.
