    Old cemeteries like that always interest me. Here in the US where I live, an old cemetery can be found hidden in a tiny bunch of trees in the middle of a field of grain or along a wood line bordering the field. My family has a private cemetery that sits atop a big hill with a gorgeous view of the countryside below. It's so beautiful there that when I was little, my family would have picnics there. Some of those headstones are so old and tiny you cannot read anything on them. This was a very interesting video.

      Old cemeteries have always fascinated us. There is something about them that is hard to describe. Perhaps it's the history and the stories of those buried that make it interesting. But yeah, there is definately something about them we love.

    Thanks again for such an informative video. Really such a pity that the municipality can't tidy up and keep it neat. To show respect for the deceased who have passed on many years ago. Thanks Chris and Vicky for another interesting video. 👍👍

    Once again a very interesting and insightful episode.
    In regards to the smallish headstone with the hole in it..
    Backhome in Pakistan, some of the really really old graves from decades ago have headstone like that.iv seen a few . I was told that the hole bit was for when the grave was visited n loves ones stayed to do prayers and would usually light a small candle or tealight and place it in the hole.and I think it also must have kind of lit up the grave site ..but that is what I was told not sure how accurate of a history lesson I was given at the time though . But seems as if that may have been a practice at some point in past as its only on the really old graves but not all of them.
    If I ever go back again il go visit our ancestral graveyard and take a pic if I am allowed. The one you showed looks almost an identical design.

      If you do get chance to take a picture, please let us know as we would be fascinated to see it. As for candles, that would make sense as the hole would be just about the right diameter I would think. We also read somewhere that some headstones had holes in them to allow wind (especially when its very windy) to pass through and therefore make the headstone more stable, but Im not sure how accurate that is.

    Really enjoyed the video, very interesting, you would think that the council or dont they have a local litter picking volunteer group could clean it up.

    I can't believe people have thrown rubbish into a grave yard full stop, nevermind onto a grave. How disrespectful can you get.

      It's a disgrace but we don't know who is responsible for the upkeep of the graveyard. Council perhaps? we just don't know.

    A very interesting video , Many thanks xx I did read once that the more inscription there is on a grave stone ,the wealthier the family , shame the cemetery has been neglected from Paula in Oxfordshire

    Great tour, lots of varied styles of gravestone in this churchyard. Very interesting. Always wish we could somehow find out more about the people buried there.

    • @DaysofHorror
      @DaysofHorror  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cheers pal. Its a shame places like this are being neglected nowadays. This place is literally hidden away behind rows of houses and it appears some of the residents are using it as a dumping ground. Plus, there is a narrow road which cuts past, which many of the locals of Haslingden use when going to and from the pubs and takeaways nearby, so as you can imagine, its easy for them to throw the rubbish over the walls. As for the headstones, as Ive said to another commentor, I think its the first time Ive seen house numbers on them. Just seems an odd thing to do.

    • @HikingAndHistory
      @HikingAndHistory ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DaysofHorror perhaps it was such a local, tight knit church back in the day, that they put their house numbers on.

      Thanks Antony. We have a story to cover that no one has really spoken about from what I've noticed. Goes back to the 1800s and doesn't involve Haslingden or near to where we live, which makes a change for you guys 😂 We are out filming it this weekend but it'll be a week or so before it's uploaded.

    The small tiny gravestone shape with the hole in may possibly hark back to the times when people were afraid of being buried alive so may be a bell mount. the stones with just initials on may be grave markers of people whose relatives were unable to read or write and may be a way to tell where their loved ones are layed to rest.

  • @matparks08

    Interesting seeing house numbers on the stones. Often see street address, etc but not specific numbers. Good one

    Have you been to St Mary's in Stockport market? The graves there are slabs on the floor and they completely surround the church. You have to walk on them. I dont mind now so much as an adult, but as a child I hated standing on peoples graves. It felt so wrong. I've no idea why thry did that.

    It's good to see sacred ground being left alone. As far as I heard there talk of reclaiming burial grounds for building houses. If the graves were 100 old. Maybe just talk in LBC. ?

      We spoke with a man called Graham yesterday whilst filming over in Darwen, he is part of the Friends of Darwen cemetery, and he mentioned how the local councils and the parishes where being told that funding to maintain graveyards and cemeteries is being cut back even further. So I would expect to see more and more places like this becoming derelict and overgrown in the months and years to come.

    The initialed curb, might have borne the initials of the stonemason. Not so far away, In Helmshore, nr the reservoir, seemingly on a main road, there was a small very small and isolated, iron fenced graveyard, which I found fascinating, but, I am going back fifty years! I have not had a reflection in five hundred years!

    • @DaysofHorror
      @DaysofHorror  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the info :-) The old graveyard you are referring to, I think is the former St. Stephens one? Many people who lived there are interred in the grounds and we covered the story of the illegal Bentley whiskey distillers. One of the main characters from that story is buried there. The only issue we had when recording this earlier this year, half of the audio was missing so we couldnt use the footage in the end.

    • @Steinweg100

      @@DaysofHorror Sorry for lost footage, I am sure that we all are!. I am not sure if this place was a cemetery or a graveyard, as there was no chapel or church nearby. I believe the difference (You would know) is a church has a grave yard and a town has a cemetery. After many decades it is all I can remember. I was on the LH side of the road, near the reservoir. I often wandered around the tops; how all those , I believe quarrymen, managed a long day's work after even getting there, beggars belief! Thank you for your Kind answer and I wish you a happy Xmas to you and yours :)

    Also, talking of St Mary's. John Blackshaw was the guy who signed King Charles I death warrant. He was born in Marple and was baptised in St Mary's.
    On his baptism record, someone wrote 'Traitor' above his name. Sadly, that book is in Chester, not in St Mary's, so you can't view it here.

    It’d be interesting to look at some of the houses and see how grand or not they are. I suspect that a high proportion of them are what would be considered upper class in the day. 6:50

    Old fabrics that don’t degrade like cotton can often be woven chrysotile asbestos. Please do NOT disturb any old in-situ materials that look like either woven rope/fabric or plasterboard.

    The circle is an ancient symbol of eternity, often found on Christian graves. The circle has no beginning or end and may also symbolise resurrection. Given that it is so small it is most likely a foot stone

      Over in Whitby it's worse. We have a planned visit upcoming and will be doing a video of one of the famous graveyards there. There is a lot of weathering but the headstones are really old.
