He's absolutely right. I would add onto that that we are further debilitated by our phones due to a dramatic decrease in introspection. That is, if you can pop your phone out every single time you get bored for even 5 seconds throughout the day, you have the easy option of getting that instant kick of dopamine as opposed to actually reflecting on yourself, your actions, etc. The net result is an influx of increasingly unconscious, egocentric individuals across three generations that struggle more than their predecessors to stay focused on anything difficult. Of course this doesn't meant we should all throw our smart phones away. But it does mean we should be aware of what our phones are doing to us, and that we should handle them with the same caution that we would anything else addictive.
I defi think the govt should limit it uses for kids. Similar to what china does, but slightly less restrictive. I think the only way we an protect these young people. They too dam addictive.
@@dillianwhyte443 I see what you're getting at but I don't think the government should get involved. I do think it should be something that should be taught to children by parents--assuming the parents aren't addicted to their phones as well. This falls under the category of developing self-discipline, much like a parent needs to teach their kids to not be gluttons. The government could try to get involved but it would mostly be unwelcome and ineffective.
I stopped using a smartphone completely around 4 weeks ago, I use a basic 2g phone that only does calls and texts. I haven't felt this good in 10 years.

We love new informations, I think youtube is a blessing to us, full of informations. The main thing is not missusing it. Truly watch educational content here. Have a time limit. Our generation (I'm 19) has a serious problem with this shit. I notice the damage that it does to me in terms of concentration and joy but there are also a lot of people who don't know the dangerous that overuse carries with it. Wish I could stop but everything seems so boring.. Guess I need to cross the abyss and just ride it out..
I actually find it really interesting with someone your age because social media & and smart phones have basically been around your entire life at this point. I often wonder if current/future generation will even know what a smart phone-less life looks like (for lack of a better tern) what a "normal " well balanced life looks like.

Precisely what Mika said I turn off my WiFi & data so that I don't hear any notifications come in; studies have found the urge to check a notification after it's ping is just as pressing as the urge to respond to the cry of an infant. Phones really do take casual advantage of deep seated instincts. This way, I choose to engage with the internet without invitation & it's a baby step that's helped me disengage the internet when I'm already all in
28 here, all I can say is I've had many addictions, from nicotine to pills. Social media seems to be the most destructive of all the drugs due to the TIME it inhabits
Yes , people who created social medias know how our brain works. I wanted to be in every social media because I had the fear of missing out and slowly I got rid of everything. I only kept TH-cam because I am posting videos and I think it's a great platform where your attention can be good if you watch quality content but after only a few weeks I got rid of TikTok. That's just too much.
Yeah TH-cam is the only place thats not addicting and good for information. I got timer on instagram and I only use TH-cam ... All the social media apps are shit they care more about their profits than people's life. It also changes brain like negativity on social media makes us think negatively

I think tik tok is already starting to expand isn't it? I'd say most of these thigns TRY to limit attention, but usually have to adapt to us. I saw an interview with jerry seinfeld and he said when he first started Comedians in Cars, all the bigwigs said people only stay on youtube for FIVE minutes. Thats it. Now people watch entire lectures. I'll watch depending on how interesting it is. Then on twitter they said 120 letters but then people started just branching them together and making them longer and longer. Tiktok of course is bound to get old VERY quickly.
I know I’m not only one when I say that I really want to stop over using or even just using social media , I’m 19 , I got my first phone and access to social media when I was around 13-14 , I remember it being amazing at first , I didn’t waste my time on it , I constantly found new content to watch , my ADHD was really happy with this sudden new shock of dopamine , but around high school when I was 15 , it all started to change I would spend so much time on social media that I would start to develop anxiety and depression , i would have NO energy , I wouldn’t be able to think about stuff , constantly in a bad mood ...basically in a zombie -like state , and what was worst about it was that after I while I started to froget who I was , I used to win art and writing competitions , that was my strong suit cuz I was not the best student academically , but around 15 I started to not be able to think for concepts and have drive about it , it even got worse , I started to copy what I would see on social media , I was no longer me , it felt like technology stole myself from me , my joys , my mood , my skills , my memory , my literal happiness hormones ,...I knew I was already addicted by how I would switch between two apps throughout an entire day and when I would get bored I wouldn’t stop I would just continue but in a terrible state , recently I started to lessen my screen time , a few days ago I went a full day without it and it was genuinely one of the best days in my life , I was able to recognize myself again , I hope I can stop it completely

I quit Instagram last week and I feel so much better. More present, I feel I used to pick up my phone and scroll for no reason at all! Like I was in auto pilot. The people that belong in my life are in the real world around me, and will always gravitate towards me! It's that simple...
I deleted my socials some weeks ago, it's been very difficult. But something that I notice is that I'm starting to enjoy little moments of my life...as my walk to work, a conversation with a relative or friend (face to face), the act of having a meal by yourself, and the silence! I'm starting to stay focused a lot more that I used to, and many things in life that I thought that were boring, are turning exiting, It's like I'm learning how to live again, and I'm only 19.(Sorry for my bad english, Im a native portuguese speaker)😊

I deleted both my Facebook and Instagram accounts but what really annoyed me is that it takes 30 days for your account to be fully deleted and you can sign back in at any point up until then. I re-downloaded it and signed back into my account so many times and got extremely frustrated with myself for not being able to make the 30 days. This time I’ve made it 19 days without signing in, only 11 more and I’m free of Zuckerberg and his evil digital handcuffs forever
it's my 19th birthday today and i am planning to try a social media detox. i am planning to deactivate my social handles for an year and reflect on my 20th birthday how much was it affecting my life and how much peaceful my life could be without social media.

We're still contributing to SM by posting on YT. Which can be quite the massive cesspool of grand standing, posturing, validation & attention seeking, all from internet rando's who don't give a sh** about you. I don't have any other form of SM, but YT always seems to reel me back in once i think I'm finally done. I'd rather blast back to the early 90's/late 80's, when social media, smart phones and the internet next existed etc etc. ;)

This is an underrated commentary on OCD. As someone with OCD and learning more about it to work through my thought spirals, it was a huge revelation to learn that engaging in the compulsions is actually harmful to OCD because this isn't a well-known thing (even for people who study psychology at the academic level, which I did). Seeing excessive social media usage as related to OCD makes a lot of sense. Especially in the context of "checking OCD," like needing to "check" our feed so we don't miss something we think is important. (The only part that maybe wouldn't be consistent with OCD is if people didn't have intense anxiety if they didn't engage in the compulsion -- checking social media -- or if they stopped the compulsion mid-action. But I think if we're being honest with ourselves and tuned in to how we feel when we choose to NOT go on social media, even with the urge to check, or force ourselves to get off the app, we'd feel some level of anxiety.)

Wow, this guy explained the science of social media’s impact on people in the most concise, intelligent manner ever. He also speaks with great personality/style and respect toward his interview. What he said about the algorithm is spot on. Just today I found myself in the scrolling shorts trap, and eventually there were several videos of a pretty terrible motorcycle accident. It matched exactly the theme of what he was saying. The animal analogy also lent an incredible new perspective. I never thought of it that way, but he’s absolutely right. I will waste so much time scrolling reels, shorts, Facebook videos, etc. and it’s an endless mind numbing activity which makes me feel immense dissatisfaction with myself. In this day and age, we quite literally are the animals digging in the corner.
I remember when videogames were accussed of being addictive... Let me tell you... I am 35 and have had videogames in my life since Nintendo so that means well into my school years... All As every year. I got internet in my third year in highschool, there wasnt social media and youtube wasnt even around yet but there were forums of all kinds, my grades dropped like crazy. I remember my firend complaining how he cant just sit and concentrate and study... Then TH-cam came in my Uni years... I basically stop playing videogames conpletely around 2012. I thought I was growing up... Around 2014 I unhooked myself from the interent completely, little TH-cam here and there, was mostly using internet to read articles about health and stuff and not impaulsively but typing in stuff I want. 2019 I get ahold of PS4 and few games... I am like whoa I still like this and I dont feel the addicted feeling at all. Then 2020-2021 due to various circuimstances I increased my TH-cam usage drastically and now I feel like a junkie. Playing a videogame feels like chore. I know this is biggest evil because how easy it pulls you in and doeant give anything good in return(mostly). Its the context switches. When you playing a videogame or watching a movie there is only one thing to focus on and the session is long not to mention far more engaging and interesting than 95% stuff here. Here you dont even watch the video till its finished you are reading the comments and scrolling for another one. This is like E-crack.
Context switching is so mentally taxing too, crazy how we've normalized these insane addiction engines and not used them like the chinese to promote healthful and helpful content. Disgusting.

It's like every emotion I felt - sadness , frustration , anger , even positive emotions , joy , happiness was numb , every time I experienced something very stimulating that actually needed my full attention , I would go back to this device (the enemy outside) . Every time I opened my phone , my first action would be to check Instagram . Actually exactly what Andrew sir said , Obsessiveness towards the phone , or to be exact, Obsessiveness towards getting dopamine in the easiest manner . But deleting social media , getting out of the loop , it's the best . Literally THE BEST. Life becomes so much better , My observation power , finding joy in very small moments , finding peace with myself and God , these are the things that are actually gonna define what we feel and what we experience and in what way in the coming future . All in all , Living in the moment and not escaping . This is what deleting social media helped me with.🥰
At one time my phone broke and I didn’t buy a new one for one month. I was reading books, I went hiking and went more often to the gym. I was so happy and fulfilled. Now I limit my phone usage and I‘m much happier than ever before.
I am no longer on much social media and as an ADHD completely stopped doom scrolling by going down rabbit holes. I haven’t watched mainstream media in over a decade however I still stay in tune with world events through Independant journalism. My life is so much more peaceful now. I am currently doing courses through Amens University to help more with the ADHD. I absolutely love Hubberman Labs and their Dopamine research. Keep the faith people. 🤟🏽♥️😎

@@Tarikkb i have adhd and only used social media to keep up with friends and was never addicted to it frankly because i can't be bothered to pay attention to it when there are other more interesting things to do. i pretty much stopped using social media during the pandemic and realized that it's all fake and the people around me who were most involved in social media were obsessed with themselves and actually genuinely horrible people. cut out the fake people and suddenly have the freedom to pursue my own hobbies and goals. those people were toxic distractions which demanded my attention and were propped up by other fake people. none of them care for each other, either. only themselves. their public images are all lies.
The older generations are having trouble understanding this addiction because they never grew up with cell phones. We have been raised ON our cell phones most of us. This GREATLY effects us as humans and as a people
Yes, I consider myself very fortunate to not have grown up with phones etc… I can use my IPad for many different things, but I’m not addicted. I can’t convince my daughters that they are addicted and I try to convince them to fast from social media, but unfortunately, to no avail. 😢
My experience on social media is that on open spaces where everyone can talk, like Twitter, there is often so much hate and aggressive behavior, that sometimes I catch myself digging through tweets searching for someone kind or reasonable, but of course I only see a high percentage of disgusting or stupid comments, which is very bad for my mental health. And of course, the algorithms being what they are, if you do that, they're going to provide you with more and more negative comments, because they think it's what you want to see. This can cause you to have a distorted vision of reality, in which the world is filled with toxic people (especially if you don't go out and meet new people that much).
This comment could've been written by me, this is exactly my experience😬 I don't have twitter but keep getting into such posts on instagram. I wish there was an option to turn off the comments (I mean for me watching the content). Alternative (and better) option: I just deleted Insta once again. Best case would be if we could just deactivate the explore page, I only wanna see what my 10 friends have posted anyways😂 (but if I have the option I'll end up on explore regardless🥴)

@@bullpupart Same! For me though, I’m using insta to promote my music. I’d say I’m addicted with TH-cam’s longform content style which, I’ve gotta stop. But insta and tiktok’s shortform style never really cut it for me; they’re only promotion tools for me so I never scroll. I think you could continue posting without really scrolling and you’re good.
Would pick a TH-cam addiction over any other if I had to choose. Even still it’s important to track to see where you time goes and what your ROI is from that.
Dear EVERYONE who wants to quit social media, who's scared of getting bored... as someone who's been there, done that, and now have a happy fulfilling life WITHOUT social media at 18. Let me tell you something. I too was like you at the beginning. Life without social media? Sounds boring... and boring sounds scary. But if you fear about having to get used to boredom....don't. It's not actually boring without social media. Seriously - life without social media, you know what kinda life that is? A life without drama, without a random news notification you compulsively look at only for it to ruin your entire day or week, and without all the shit that comes with it. It's a life full of every day things you actually begin to enjoy, and learn what LIVING truly means, rather than half assing some small goals you find hard to achieve with tiktok shoved in your face by yourself 10 hours a day. Anyway. My point is, don't fear boredom. Dare to be bored, for a temporoary, TEMPORARY while, and almost immediately, you will begin changing. Enjoying life further, able to look inside yourself and learn how to love yourself, work on the wounds your parents left behind in your heart, instead of washing the pain away with the distraction of a tiktok or instagram post. Instead, you sit there and you actually find meaning in your life. Life becomes so much MORE, because you're not constantly comparing it to the extremes on the internet. You learn to look at the life you have and for once in your fucking life, feel happy that right now, this moment, what you have is what you have, and what is, is what it is. Don't worry. You will achieve what you want to achieve...if you want it bad enough. x, from stranger on the internet.
I think the scariest part is that we're basically bound to an algorithm which in a way is controlling because you rarely see outside the algorithm. This might also hinder you from finding new things you may enjoy or find fascinating because you rarely (if ever) see them on the algorithm, you would actually have to SEARCH for it.
Mixing obsession, compulsion, fomo and habit there. These are not the same thing and aren't driven by the same thing. To explain, one of the key problems leading to this habit/compulsive behavior is that social media does in fact also provide some genuine value, much of which is not available elsewhere. So among the reasons people get hooked is that, to defeat their habit/compulsion, they'd be missing out on valuable stuff, which would lead to fomo, which is entirely justified. It's not like gambling, because gamblers require luck to turn a profit. Frequent/constant social media presence that leads to valuable insight does not require almost any luck, it's much more a matter of skill with a pinch of luck involved. This also makes social media appealing to various demographics: those who know how to find what they seek and those who don't.
I'm 66, so I remember when we didn't have anything except 3 TV channels. I find some social media beneficial, like Quora and TH-cam. But my Twitter feed can be extremely intense and depressing. Facebook is impersonal. We all seem to watch social media because we're lonely or bored. But the best way to deal with loneliness and boredom is to be interacting with real human beings. We need each other more than we need social media.
I have gone to great lenghts to minimize my ig and tik tok usage. Now I am mainly on youtube because it is the most productive social media. However you have to be aware that watching productive videos without taking action, does not make you productive. The key is finding the balance

If anyone here is looking to stop being distracted by their phones or computers something I've found helpful is a browser extension called a:b which blocks certain websites, deleting social media too also really helps. After a few days you don't even miss it.
it was really alarming looking at my screentime and realizing I was spending 4-5 hours on apps that brought me no enjoyment. I would occasionally find things that I really liked but other than that I was just watching videos that I didn't really care about. I'm doing more things now but I hate thinking about how I spent so long doing basically nothing when I could've been doing something that brought me actual happiness
Yes we really do need to redress the balance with our phones. I came off Twitter and just have Facebook and Insta on web browser now...I feel lighter and it's helped my mental health. I despair when I see young people in the gym scrolling through their phones every minute or so and not just enjoying a moment and truly enjoying the exercise. But I do think many people are now cottoning on to the fact that being attached to your phone is not that great for mental health
Exactly. I mull over the thought of deleting TH-cam as well. But then where would I find insights like these ? TH-cam shorts are just like tik tok and Instagram. There's no escaping this free dopamine nightmare.

The point is that if we just open youtube even for inspirations like this video, it itself is a niche which keeps us hooked on youtube. Instead, we should open youtube and just searcg the specific topic we are looking for, see the video and close it without scrolling to similar videos and suggestions

I was that dog before and now looking back it is indeed sad and a realization to step up in my life, I can say social media or any platform can be useful depending on the usage of it, its all about setting each aspect apart from each other, for example today I stayed watching TH-cam while cleaning I need to watch something or listen to music in order for me to function better, but that sounds really kinda like addiction however Is not worst then among other things, TH-cam is the most enjoyable app in the world but Like i said it can be addicting in a way and bring in more dopamine, I learn I just need to be better without it, there will always be time for that, That is the reason I chose to watch this video to understand a little more and its good info- Thanks
I have deleted all my social media apps,my account is still there but I no longer use the apps I have them all uninstalled the only app I use us TH-cam and im not 24/7 on it either , I learned that social media can really really ruin someone's life it can make you very lazy and miss out real life events , family dinners , friends, and so much more I'm more into reading books now it's only been Day 1 of no social media for me and I want to continue it like that for a long time , each month I'll come back here and update you guys that what has changed in my life maybe it'll encourage you to be a better person

When I was young, the bad effects, also physically, were discussed of reading comic books. Then came TV, which was even more evil. The PC came and severely corrupted not only the young but all humanity. Now we have the smartphone and social media, and they are the path made of gold that leads us all to hell.
Some Parents i know are being attacked by entire Twitter for not giving their Kids a Smart Phone and ain't letting them on the Internet, they want the Kids to read books, be outside and play, study and normal things Kids did back before this new tech came.
I stopped using any social media on my phone. Now I experience so called JOMO. I use my phone as a tool only. For comms, banking, navigation and camera.
If you're struggling, you can make the addiction less powerful by resetting the app, don't subscribe, like, comment on any video. The algorithm will not be able to fully hook you. This is much easier to manage than setting yourself a time limit.
The scariest part is that this didn't happen to me with TH-cam, as it was a healthy relationship, when I felt lonely, I at least learned something new with each normal video. I spent 10 years using social media as a distraction and coping mechanism for my life. I've been slowly lowering my time on it and I feel like I'm awake for the first time.
I had to stop social media posting due to a personal injury lawsuit. I realize I freaking hate Facebook and only a couple people have noticed in two years I’m not on there posting like I used to. It’s eye opening that nobody truly cares most only care about themselves and making their lives look perfect. I also hate getting on there and seeing tragic ways people have passed or being killed or someone’s slowly dying. I realize this is a BIG world and I can’t let everything in and expect to be mentally sound or okay. We were not meant to be able to digest and be affected by things happening hundreds or thousands of miles away.

He's absolutely right. I would add onto that that we are further debilitated by our phones due to a dramatic decrease in introspection. That is, if you can pop your phone out every single time you get bored for even 5 seconds throughout the day, you have the easy option of getting that instant kick of dopamine as opposed to actually reflecting on yourself, your actions, etc. The net result is an influx of increasingly unconscious, egocentric individuals across three generations that struggle more than their predecessors to stay focused on anything difficult.
Of course this doesn't meant we should all throw our smart phones away. But it does mean we should be aware of what our phones are doing to us, and that we should handle them with the same caution that we would anything else addictive.

I do think it should be something that should be taught to children by parents--assuming the parents aren't addicted to their phones as well. This falls under the category of developing self-discipline, much like a parent needs to teach their kids to not be gluttons. The government could try to get involved but it would mostly be unwelcome and ineffective.

I actually find it really interesting with someone your age because social media & and smart phones have basically been around your entire life at this point. I often wonder if current/future generation will even know what a smart phone-less life looks like (for lack of a better tern) what a "normal " well balanced life looks like.

I turn off my WiFi & data so that I don't hear any notifications come in; studies have found the urge to check a notification after it's ping is just as pressing as the urge to respond to the cry of an infant. Phones really do take casual advantage of deep seated instincts. This way, I choose to engage with the internet without invitation & it's a baby step that's helped me disengage the internet when I'm already all in

Yes , people who created social medias know how our brain works. I wanted to be in every social media because I had the fear of missing out and slowly I got rid of everything. I only kept TH-cam because I am posting videos and I think it's a great platform where your attention can be good if you watch quality content but after only a few weeks I got rid of TikTok. That's just too much.

I’ve definitely noticed a decline in my mental health since social media has peaked in society, I constantly find myself feeling depressed and I can’t help think it’s linked to social media, if I look back at my life before it, I do recall feeling overall much happier.

I think tik tok is already starting to expand isn't it? I'd say most of these thigns TRY to limit attention, but usually have to adapt to us. I saw an interview with jerry seinfeld and he said when he first started Comedians in Cars, all the bigwigs said people only stay on youtube for FIVE minutes. Thats it. Now people watch entire lectures. I'll watch depending on how interesting it is. Then on twitter they said 120 letters but then people started just branching them together and making them longer and longer. Tiktok of course is bound to get old VERY quickly.
I know I’m not only one when I say that I really want to stop over using or even just using social media , I’m 19 , I got my first phone and access to social media when I was around 13-14 , I remember it being amazing at first , I didn’t waste my time on it , I constantly found new content to watch , my ADHD was really happy with this sudden new shock of dopamine , but around high school when I was 15 , it all started to change I would spend so much time on social media that I would start to develop anxiety and depression , i would have NO energy , I wouldn’t be able to think about stuff , constantly in a bad mood ...basically in a zombie -like state , and what was worst about it was that after I while I started to froget who I was , I used to win art and writing competitions , that was my strong suit cuz I was not the best student academically , but around 15 I started to not be able to think for concepts and have drive about it , it even got worse , I started to copy what I would see on social media , I was no longer me , it felt like technology stole myself from me , my joys , my mood , my skills , my memory , my literal happiness hormones ,...I knew I was already addicted by how I would switch between two apps throughout an entire day and when I would get bored I wouldn’t stop I would just continue but in a terrible state , recently I started to lessen my screen time , a few days ago I went a full day without it and it was genuinely one of the best days in my life , I was able to recognize myself again , I hope I can stop it completely

I deleted my socials some weeks ago, it's been very difficult. But something that I notice is that I'm starting to enjoy little moments of my life...as my walk to work, a conversation with a relative or friend (face to face), the act of having a meal by yourself, and the silence! I'm starting to stay focused a lot more that I used to, and many things in life that I thought that were boring, are turning exiting, It's like I'm learning how to live again, and I'm only 19.(Sorry for my bad english, Im a native portuguese speaker)😊

I deleted both my Facebook and Instagram accounts but what really annoyed me is that it takes 30 days for your account to be fully deleted and you can sign back in at any point up until then. I re-downloaded it and signed back into my account so many times and got extremely frustrated with myself for not being able to make the 30 days. This time I’ve made it 19 days without signing in, only 11 more and I’m free of Zuckerberg and his evil digital handcuffs forever

This is an underrated commentary on OCD. As someone with OCD and learning more about it to work through my thought spirals, it was a huge revelation to learn that engaging in the compulsions is actually harmful to OCD because this isn't a well-known thing (even for people who study psychology at the academic level, which I did).
Seeing excessive social media usage as related to OCD makes a lot of sense.
Especially in the context of "checking OCD," like needing to "check" our feed so we don't miss something we think is important.
(The only part that maybe wouldn't be consistent with OCD is if people didn't have intense anxiety if they didn't engage in the compulsion -- checking social media -- or if they stopped the compulsion mid-action. But I think if we're being honest with ourselves and tuned in to how we feel when we choose to NOT go on social media, even with the urge to check, or force ourselves to get off the app, we'd feel some level of anxiety.)

What he said about the algorithm is spot on. Just today I found myself in the scrolling shorts trap, and eventually there were several
videos of a pretty terrible motorcycle accident. It matched exactly the theme of what he was saying.
The animal analogy also lent an incredible new perspective. I never thought of it that way, but he’s absolutely right. I will waste so much time scrolling reels, shorts, Facebook videos, etc. and it’s an endless mind numbing activity which makes me feel immense dissatisfaction with myself. In this day and age, we quite literally are the animals digging in the corner.
I remember when videogames were accussed of being addictive... Let me tell you... I am 35 and have had videogames in my life since Nintendo so that means well into my school years... All As every year. I got internet in my third year in highschool, there wasnt social media and youtube wasnt even around yet but there were forums of all kinds, my grades dropped like crazy. I remember my firend complaining how he cant just sit and concentrate and study... Then TH-cam came in my Uni years... I basically stop playing videogames conpletely around 2012. I thought I was growing up... Around 2014 I unhooked myself from the interent completely, little TH-cam here and there, was mostly using internet to read articles about health and stuff and not impaulsively but typing in stuff I want. 2019 I get ahold of PS4 and few games... I am like whoa I still like this and I dont feel the addicted feeling at all. Then 2020-2021 due to various circuimstances I increased my TH-cam usage drastically and now I feel like a junkie. Playing a videogame feels like chore. I know this is biggest evil because how easy it pulls you in and doeant give anything good in return(mostly). Its the context switches. When you playing a videogame or watching a movie there is only one thing to focus on and the session is long not to mention far more engaging and interesting than 95% stuff here. Here you dont even watch the video till its finished you are reading the comments and scrolling for another one. This is like E-crack.
That's why you need to meditate. It makes you more conscious and presence arises. One is able see what in the actual fuck he is doing

It's like every emotion I felt - sadness , frustration , anger , even positive emotions , joy , happiness was numb , every time I experienced something very stimulating that actually needed my full attention , I would go back to this device (the enemy outside) . Every time I opened my phone , my first action would be to check Instagram . Actually exactly what Andrew sir said , Obsessiveness towards the phone , or to be exact, Obsessiveness towards getting dopamine in the easiest manner . But deleting social media , getting out of the loop , it's the best . Literally THE BEST. Life becomes so much better , My observation power , finding joy in very small moments , finding peace with myself and God , these are the things that are actually gonna define what we feel and what we experience and in what way in the coming future . All in all , Living in the moment and not escaping . This is what deleting social media helped me with.🥰
At one time my phone broke and I didn’t buy a new one for one month. I was reading books, I went hiking and went more often to the gym. I was so happy and fulfilled. Now I limit my phone usage and I‘m much happier than ever before.
I am no longer on much social media and as an ADHD completely stopped doom scrolling by going down rabbit holes. I haven’t watched mainstream media in over a decade however I still stay in tune with world events through Independant journalism. My life is so much more peaceful now. I am currently doing courses through Amens University to help more with the ADHD. I absolutely love Hubberman Labs and their Dopamine research. Keep the faith people. 🤟🏽♥️😎

@@Tarikkb i have adhd and only used social media to keep up with friends and was never addicted to it frankly because i can't be bothered to pay attention to it when there are other more interesting things to do. i pretty much stopped using social media during the pandemic and realized that it's all fake and the people around me who were most involved in social media were obsessed with themselves and actually genuinely horrible people. cut out the fake people and suddenly have the freedom to pursue my own hobbies and goals. those people were toxic distractions which demanded my attention and were propped up by other fake people. none of them care for each other, either. only themselves. their public images are all lies.

Yes, I consider myself very fortunate to not have grown up with phones etc… I can use my IPad for many different things, but I’m not addicted. I can’t convince my daughters that they are addicted and I try to convince them to fast from social media, but unfortunately, to no avail. 😢

My experience on social media is that on open spaces where everyone can talk, like Twitter, there is often so much hate and aggressive behavior, that sometimes I catch myself digging through tweets searching for someone kind or reasonable, but of course I only see a high percentage of disgusting or stupid comments, which is very bad for my mental health. And of course, the algorithms being what they are, if you do that, they're going to provide you with more and more negative comments, because they think it's what you want to see. This can cause you to have a distorted vision of reality, in which the world is filled with toxic people (especially if you don't go out and meet new people that much).
This comment could've been written by me, this is exactly my experience😬 I don't have twitter but keep getting into such posts on instagram. I wish there was an option to turn off the comments (I mean for me watching the content). Alternative (and better) option: I just deleted Insta once again. Best case would be if we could just deactivate the explore page, I only wanna see what my 10 friends have posted anyways😂 (but if I have the option I'll end up on explore regardless🥴)

Dear EVERYONE who wants to quit social media, who's scared of getting bored... as someone who's been there, done that, and now have a happy fulfilling life WITHOUT social media at 18. Let me tell you something.
I too was like you at the beginning. Life without social media? Sounds boring... and boring sounds scary.
But if you fear about having to get used to boredom....don't. It's not actually boring without social media. Seriously - life without social media, you know what kinda life that is? A life without drama, without a random news notification you compulsively look at only for it to ruin your entire day or week, and without all the shit that comes with it. It's a life full of every day things you actually begin to enjoy, and learn what LIVING truly means, rather than half assing some small goals you find hard to achieve with tiktok shoved in your face by yourself 10 hours a day.
Anyway. My point is, don't fear boredom. Dare to be bored, for a temporoary, TEMPORARY while, and almost immediately, you will begin changing. Instead, you sit there and you actually find meaning in your life. Life becomes so much MORE, because you're not constantly comparing it to the extremes on the internet.
You learn to look at the life you have and for once in your fucking life, feel happy that right now, this moment, what you have is what you have, and what is, is what it is.

I think the scariest part is that we're basically bound to an algorithm which in a way is controlling because you rarely see outside the algorithm. This might also hinder you from finding new things you may enjoy or find fascinating because you rarely (if ever) see them on the algorithm, you would actually have to SEARCH for it.
Mixing obsession, compulsion, fomo and habit there. These are not the same thing and aren't driven by the same thing.
To explain, one of the key problems leading to this habit/compulsive behavior is that social media does in fact also provide some genuine value, much of which is not available elsewhere. So among the reasons people get hooked is that, to defeat their habit/compulsion, they'd be missing out on valuable stuff, which would lead to fomo, which is entirely justified. It's not like gambling, because gamblers require luck to turn a profit. Frequent/constant social media presence that leads to valuable insight does not require almost any luck, it's much more a matter of skill with a pinch of luck involved. This also makes social media appealing to various demographics: those who know how to find what they seek and those who don't.

I'm 66, so I remember when we didn't have anything except 3 TV channels. I find some social media beneficial, like Quora and TH-cam. But my Twitter feed can be extremely intense and depressing. Facebook is impersonal. We all seem to watch social media because we're lonely or bored. But the best way to deal with loneliness and boredom is to be interacting with real human beings. We need each other more than we need social media.
One way to beat this addiction, asking ourselves this question:
Does it matter to log on Instagram or Facebook? Does it really matter??

I have gone to great lenghts to minimize my ig and tik tok usage. Now I am mainly on youtube because it is the most productive social media.
However you have to be aware that watching productive videos without taking action, does not make you productive. The key is finding the balance

If anyone here is looking to stop being distracted by their phones or computers something I've found helpful is a browser extension called a:b which blocks certain websites, deleting social media too also really helps. After a few days you don't even miss it.

it was really alarming looking at my screentime and realizing I was spending 4-5 hours on apps that brought me no enjoyment. I would occasionally find things that I really liked but other than that I was just watching videos that I didn't really care about. I'm doing more things now but I hate thinking about how I spent so long doing basically nothing when I could've been doing something that brought me actual happiness

Yes we really do need to redress the balance with our phones. I came off Twitter and just have Facebook and Insta on web browser now...I feel lighter and it's helped my mental health. I despair when I see young people in the gym scrolling through their phones every minute or so and not just enjoying a moment and truly enjoying the exercise. But I do think many people are now cottoning on to the fact that being attached to your phone is not that great for mental health

The point is that if we just open youtube even for inspirations like this video, it itself is a niche which keeps us hooked on youtube. Instead, we should open youtube and just searcg the specific topic we are looking for, see the video and close it without scrolling to similar videos and suggestions

I think this has destroyed the past 15+ years of my life, since FB. Thinking it's best to just delete everything cold turkey since everything is a dopamine trap in these modern times. It's actually absurd.
It's not absurd, people quit drugs and drinking all the time. Social media no different. You sound like a sick addict if it's ruined your life for 15 years by you think it's absurd to quit it.
I’ve definitely noticed a decline in my mental health since social media has peaked in society, I constantly find myself feeling depressed and I can’t help think it’s linked to social media, if I look back at my life before it, I do recall feeling overall much happier.

I was that dog before and now looking back it is indeed sad and a realization to step up in my life, I can say social media or any platform can be useful depending on the usage of it, its all about setting each aspect apart from each other, for example today I stayed watching TH-cam while cleaning I need to watch something or listen to music in order for me to function better, but that sounds really kinda like addiction however Is not worst then among other things, TH-cam is the most enjoyable app in the world but Like i said it can be addicting in a way and bring in more dopamine, I learn I just need to be better without it, there will always be time for that, That is the reason I chose to watch this video to understand a little more and its good info- Thanks
I have deleted all my social media apps,my account is still there but I no longer use the apps I have them all uninstalled the only app I use us TH-cam and im not 24/7 on it either , I learned that social media can really really ruin someone's life it can make you very lazy and miss out real life events , family dinners , friends, and so much more I'm more into reading books now it's only been Day 1 of no social media for me and I want to continue it like that for a long time , each month I'll come back here and update you guys that what has changed in my life maybe it'll encourage you to be a better person

When I was young, the bad effects, also physically, were discussed of reading comic books. Then came TV, which was even more evil. The PC came and severely corrupted not only the young but all humanity. Now we have the smartphone and social media, and they are the path made of gold that leads us all to hell.

Some Parents i know are being attacked by entire Twitter for not giving their Kids a Smart Phone and ain't letting them on the Internet, they want the Kids to read books, be outside and play, study and normal things Kids did back before this new tech came.
I stopped using any social media on my phone. Now I experience so called JOMO. I use my phone as a tool only. For comms, banking, navigation and camera.

If you're struggling, you can make the addiction less powerful by resetting the app, don't subscribe, like, comment on any video. The algorithm will not be able to fully hook you. This is much easier to manage than setting yourself a time limit.
The scariest part is that this didn't happen to me with TH-cam, as it was a healthy relationship, when I felt lonely, I at least learned something new with each normal video. But with TikTok short videos, it's like the pressure for showing interesting things in a very few seconds is making that social network very superficial, you try to dig and dig for more and you won't find nothing that nourishes your soul or makes you connect with people. And yes, as other comments said, it's in the hand of childs. We are making digital zombies.

I had to stop social media posting due to a personal injury lawsuit. I realize I freaking hate Facebook and only a couple people have noticed in two years I’m not on there posting like I used to. It’s eye opening that nobody truly cares most only care about themselves and making their lives look perfect. I also hate getting on there and seeing tragic ways people have passed or being killed or someone’s slowly dying. I realize this is a BIG world and I can’t let everything in and expect to be mentally sound or okay. We were not meant to be able to digest and be affected by things happening hundreds or thousands of miles away.
