Oyster mushrooms make huge numbers of spores, which become airborne and end up in your lungs. Make sure you have good ventilation and wear good filtration when working around the mature mushrooms, or you can end up with terrible lung problems. I personally know several people who got into mushroom farming who ended up getting out due to serious health problems from fungal infections in their lungs, it's a real hazard to be aware of.

These fungal spores are a hazard to the lungs. Very dangerous to be around it for prolonged periods of time without a good ventilating system.

Oyster Mushrooms do not produce spores until late in their life cycle. It is very similar to vegetables and seeds. For oyster mushrooms the cap starts out folded down(the iconic mushroom shape) and then move up to where they are straight, and then end up with the edges upwards (making a bowl). It is only after they are bowl-shaped that they release spores. The rule most people use is to watch the largest (most advanced) mushroom for each cluster, and when that mushroom is almost flat, then you harvest the whole cluster. If you are a mushroom farmer, you should never see bowl-shaped oyster mushrooms similar to how a market gardener should never see lettuce seeds maturing.

Very true. I always use my hands working with my plants. Even breaking down and mixing soil with decomposts. It sometimes takes time but its a great feeling to see the plant sprout and grow from the soil that was put together with my hands. 👍

WOW! You're getting an incredible amount done over this winter! Super impressed with the speed at which you're able to seed your trays. AMAZING. I've seen Curtis Stone demo the actual planting process and that too is incredibly fast and time saving. It will be very interesting at the end of the season to see the impact it has on the bottom line of the market garden aspect of your farm. I wonder whether it will begin to make that part of your operation as profitable as the animal portions. Really interested to see that. It will also be exciting to see the changes to your home and your family's quality of life with the way you're optimizing the use of the heat generated by your wood stove. It's truly remarkable the impact simple design can have on making use of every drop energy vs the hugely wasteful way the western world uses it. If every home was designed for maximum efficiency through first conservation (decreasing how much energy that's needed to run the home as a function of it's design, siting, insulation, etc) and then through optimization of systems, that alone would drastically reduce human impact on climate destabilization and habitat destruction. It's incredibly moving to me to see what you and so many others are doing in this regard. You are leaders in showing humanity how we can turn our ship around before we take ourselves over the falls so to speak. Keep up the great work!!!
I'm very interested in doing one of your 6 week internships at some point, but can't just yet. I hope to have that opportunity one day soon!
    PS
    Ragna is adorable...

Good to see you back Richard :-) can’t help wondering if a wire inset to your seeding table - like the mesh floor of your chicken mobiles - would simply allow any overflow potting mix to fall straight into a container below - no more bench wipe downs after each tray has been seeded? Look forward to seeing your paper pot transplanting in action when the season begins 👍

Thoroughly enjoying your videos (second so far lol) brought back memories to when I just started as a Apprentice Gardener in Scotland almost 50 years ago.
We used wooden seed trays, a dibber (basically 0.25" plywood with wooden dowels inserted into drilled holes in the plywood pretty well like your Dibbler in plexiglass.
I think it was John Innes seed compost that we mixed up in the potting shed floor.
It's amazing to see similar method being used all these years but seeing you filling and seeding the trays it's way faster.
I was only getting paid £7.00 a week back then, barely covered my bus fares going to work and learning.
Thank you for sharing your video's with us, I forgot how much I loved the job....

Fill several trays together with your seeding mix, then dib them all, then place the seeds in all trays, then place the vermiculite on all trays, then move to shelves. Wasted moves each time from picking up one implement or tool and then changing process. Keep all stages together to save your time and maximise efficiency 👍

I´m so happy that there are tools like this which make work so very much faster and more scaleable without always needing motorized or even computerized equipment. You NEED to be able to put out a lot of work to make a living. But you apparently don´t need loud, motorized equip for every job. For some jobs obviously, but for fewer jobs than i had thought.

We understand the need to harvest trees. Trees are, and can be, treated as any other crop we grow. Trees grow back. They're wonderful. It looks a little upsetting, with stumps, downed branches and wheel ruts everywhere. It's sad, too, that it takes a crop so long to grow, and the returns are relatively low. The monoculture spruce forest, yes, not very diverse, but it's very economical to the forest companies.
I worked as a silviculture technologist. Under my watch, millions of trees have been re-planted.
But, a forest is a good cash crop, and a great way to get a large capital infusion to an agricultural infrasture project (as you shared).
All the best, Richard. Looking forward to your next book: I'm eating up "How small farms work"

First have a fairly large soil bin on the counter beside where you're working on a flat in order to save time and the back breaking work of repeatedly bending over to scoop soil. Secondly put your flat inside a shallow bin so that you can very quickly wipe all excess soil off of your flat without having to be careful about making a mess on the counter as the shallow bin will collect all soil you've shoved off of your flat. Then you can remove the flat, dump the shallow bin into your larger soil bin and save the time that you'd otherwise use to clean the counter.

Hey Richard, Connor from Neversink does a rotating hand motion (think Karate Kid) to rub the potting soil into the cells with a soft touch so as not to disfigure the cell layout. It looks really quick and effective. Never uses a brush. One drop on the table and ready for seeding...

A man who works hard stays strong. Videos & work & working the homestead are just part his day. The old saying, Use it or lose it is very apt, especially in these days of technology & gadgets making everything almost too easy. A wife needs to see her man is willing & capable of breaking a sweat for the benefit of his home & family. And kids need to have a good examples to exemplify & nurture work ethic in a world focused on the coffee break, the dinner bell, & the paid vacation or lack thereof. Being industrious while one still can be is wise. He's making his house a home, & that's not a crime.

My back was aching after watching the seeding with the paper pot system. Your bench is too low for me. I think you could add an auxiliary bench right on top of the existing bench, permanent or temporary. This raised work level, maybe six or eight inches, should extend beyond the original bench, a foot or so, to create space for your seeding medium containers on the floor below, and ease back strain by allowing the trays to be closer to your body. The near edge of the raised bench could have notches for sweeping the extra soil bits into the containers. The raised platform would create a narrow shelf space between the two bench tops that would accommodate your seeding tools. Great videos! Thanks!

Then he let loose the goats and then the chickens. Goats ate everything. The chickens ate the fly maggots in the cow pies so the flies never reproduced themselves. Then he let the hogs in and they ate what was left and uprooted trees. All the farmer had to do is to cut the trees with a chainsaw for firewood and run the rest through the wood chipper for compost. I would have added a step and drilled holes into some of the logs for mushrooms. The animals work for free. And the farmer had little to do to clear the land.

Saw the cases and cases of paperpots to go into the garden. Planting once or twice is probably ok but continued repetitive use of the paperpots have to have an impact on the soil. The manufacture of paper is not a clean process in itself and constantly placing these into the same soil bed can't be good.
I have studied this process at length and came to the conclusion that there has to be a better way. I understand the need to cut time in process as growing ground crops is a very time involved process.
The paper has to come from somewhere, the binding agents have to be chemical and this has to be shipped a very long way. All this has a price on the environment and not long term sustainable.

Paper is biodegradable and the glue would surely be made of insects. Where do chemicals come into play?

@@goldenages7089 If it was just paper and glue, we could be all be happy. There are many other factors and ingredients that make up the mix called cardboard and paper. I have been to many paper mills to see the manufacture firsthand.

I dunno buddy. Compost worms love paper and cardboard, glue and all. If compost worms have any chemicals they will die, so I would have to question the accuracy of your statements.

@@goldenages7089 Thats ok there are many crack and meth addicts that say what they do doesn't hurt anyone. Paper doesn't bind to itself and so it doesn't decompose there are additives to help stop this. If you don't want to listen, that's fine by me. We live in a free country. To each his own.

He has compost worms in his garden, so the paper will definitely be turned into highly beneficial worm castings.
There are many videos documenting the laying down of cardboard and then organic material on top of that as the basis for a no dig garden. The cardboard inhibits weed seeds from sprouting and in a few years time with the help of the worms is all broken down naturally to form a rich soil.
I have not seen the detrimental effects you describe documented anywhere. Perhaps you could link us to a video?

Ergonomics on the table. Aching backs after a couple of trays? Way too low, 36" average... Higher for taller people, lower for shorter people....

I enjoy following your process and learning from it. I've noticed you take economics quite seriously but maybe, just maybe, it's time you invested in some sort of a mic? Or maybe you could repurpose an old gaming headset or the like? Cheers!

it is a great video. but please dont use Cement, on one side we are talking about regenerative farming to absorb CO2, make the earth a better place and on other side we use cement which is very harmful for the environment.
