    I think a lot of kids today fail to realize that these guys weren't doing tricks they saw some kid land on youtube or street league. They were inventing them and raising the bar for the next level and generation. The kids that talk shit on the original won't be skating much longer. If you don't respect it, you don't love it. It takes a lot of love to keep beating your self up skating for years and years.

      Dude, it's getting me hyped to go skating. Vallely as inspiring today as he was in 1989. Jason Lee was going off as well. Never knew of him at the time, but, man alive. He had some sky high airs off that jump ramp too.

      This shit is crazy! I think the title is wrong tho?? Vallely left Powell, Jason Lee was with Stereo, Gonz was bullied outta The Alva Posse & joined Powell, Natas was the only SMA guy I know of

      And by '89 if that's correct, SMA would've been Under Santa Cruz. This must've been when they all got together to start World Industries, the 1st skateboarder owned/run business

    The irony is Jesse was probably more well known here still than Lee was. Lee was the new guy, a top am establishing himself. Jesse's heyday had been 2-3 years earlier ... he was a launch ramp/handplant/wall ramp guy who ruled the Venice Beach scene with aggression and flamboyant style. But he stuck around for a few years more as he was the first pro to hook up with Rocco at the dawn of WI, when it was "SMA Rocco Division".

    • @danielmattar
      @danielmattar 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nominay good point, it shows how fast evolution happened back then.

    I'm sure skateboarding feels just as good today as it does in the 80s and 90s. Still, I'm glad I got to be a part of the evolution era of it. At this point the game is set, skateboarding can't really evolve any further than it has and it's been that way for years. Everything was all new during my generation. And it was simply a different time. And sure I'm biased but so is everyone.

    Mike V's back lip was gnarly as hell. I would much rather try that on a rail 10 times as high than a curb high one. Just asking to clip the floor and go back flipping. His style was so rad even back then. Fast and you could see he was genuinely skating for the feeling of it. Crazy to think that these dudes were paving the groundwork for all of us today. Pioneers, artists. I could only imagine how wild their minds must have worked, thinking of all the potential new things to try and things to innovate. If these dudes had the boards and the quality ramps that we have now back then, they would have been skating just as good as we do nowdays. That quarter that Jason Lee 360 flip fakied on looked like it was made of paper.

    This video is timeless. Thanks for uploading it. I love finding old rarities like this, especially stuff from the birth of the modern street era. There will always be dumb kids who can't appreciate anything that isn't full of flippidy-doo-da switch stuff, but there are a lot of kids who are smart enough to understand and appreciate the classics (as evidenced by all the young pros who've thrown a bit of old school into their bag of tricks).

      Hocus pocus (H street) was flinedin 1989 saw it in 1990. Guys there were already doing it. The hand rails as well. It was a transitional time for sure.
      Not counting Rubbish heaps where Mullen transitioned to street and transposed his insane flips and impossibles.

    • @PMSTACKER3000
      @PMSTACKER3000 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was truly revolutionary at the time. Frankly, many jump ramp type street skaters couldn't even do a rolling kickflip in 1989 and, when they did, it was mobbed out and sketchy. The first time I saw someone do a 360 flip was in the spring of 1990. Andy Stone did one at a contest after several tries - it wasn't automatic for him or he was having a bad day. A few weeks later and he was probably doing them switch. laughs.

    • @jgils5559
      @jgils5559 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PMSTACKER3000 yeah, you’re definitely right about that. Until the double tale boards came out it was a lot harder trying to do stuff like 360 flips with those old style clunky boards. If I remember right, when H-Street video came out around that time we were all blown away at how much skating progressed in a short amount of time. Those skaters were unbelievable in that video. Much more advanced then what the Powell Peralta guys were doing.

    • @PMSTACKER3000
      @PMSTACKER3000 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jgils5559 Actually, it was 1989 not 1990 when I first saw the 360 flip at a contest.
      I think a lot of trick development at the time had to do with regionalism. If you were outside of California, you would probably be exposed to a trick by magazine or video - both of which were 6 months to a year+ behind the curve of what was happening at the epicenters. Then you, and maybe your crew, had to figure out how to reverse engineer the trick. I wonder how skateboarding would have advanced if it came about in the internet/youtube era.

      @@PMSTACKER3000 I skated back then and can attest to the fact that at least my kick flips were mobbed AF. I never really knew of 360 flips at that time. As far as I knew it, only Mullen could do things like that
