Ben Simmons - Defensive Dynamo 19/20 (Lockdown)

  • Ben Simmons. 2x NBA All-Star. 2018 NBA Rookie of the Year. He’s the very model of a modern Magic Johnson; just a vision with his versatility. He vaunts the 76ers, especially defensively, to ever greater heights. The ability to truly guard every position is awe-inspiring enough as it is, but Ben being able to disrupt the offense is so destructive that it is a sight to behold. His defensive ferocity forces opposing teams to have to go to their plan B. Simmons leads the league in steals, tied for first in loose balls recovered, third in deflections, ranks in the top 10 in defensive box plus/minus, and is in the top 20 in defensive win shares and Value Over Replacement Player (VORP).
    Philadelphia has a glut of good defenders, but Simmons is often the one on LeBron James, James Harden, and Kawhi Leonard, in the clutch. The big wing types (Jayson Tatum, Jimmy Butler, Pascal Siakam) are home for him, but he can venture out. Brett Brown doesn’t shy away from siccing Simmons on the more in-motion types of players - Bradley Beal, Joe Harris, Jamal Murray, and Khris Middleton are examples of guys who are at their most dangerous on the move, slaloming around screens set all across the court - but Ben still brings the intensity and effort against them. Simmons is also strong and stout so when he switches onto true bigs, they can’t back him down the way they would traditional “ones”, and since he IS primarily played as Philly’s point, he gets tasked with attacking opposing ball handlers.
    Off the ball, Ben is devastating with his deflections. Zach Lowe on a recent podcast (link below) said of Simmons “he had a stretch during the season where he was like Deion Sanders closing games with interceptions.”
    Simmons spoke at the beginning of this season that the goal was to win an NBA championship, and that “every other individual accolade comes along with doing your job.” Simmons added “That’s just my mentality - I’d rather win and see everybody on my team do well than an individual accolade…unless it’s Defensive Player of the Year.” If you watch the clips, I organized them to show more than just how springy Simmons is with his steals. He moves his feet magnificently, he closes out well and chases guys off the line, and his hands are so quick and strong that even MVPs like Russell Westbrook and Giannis Antetokounmpo just sort of stand there staring at the refs because they are expecting to get their superstar calls.

    Simmons is off the charts elite when it comes to his defence. In fact he is elite at every part of the game except the one obvious flaw that everyone focuses on. If he develops into a confident shooter, he will be a genuine MVP candidate. Also, the 76'ers now have 3 Aussies in their team.

    He is pretty much good/elite at every part of defense : great point of attack defender, great nail/help defender ( league leading 2.1 steals per games ), good isolation defender. The only thing he isn't great is rim protection, even though he's above average for a guard but is a bit disappointing for an 6'9 player. But he have one of the best paint defender in Embiid to cover his only defensive weakness.

      It’s what separates Magic Johnson from Ben Simmons. Both have great size , ball security and court vision. Simmons is already more athletic than Magic. The main difference between the two being Magic commanded respect in the half court; Ben Simmons dosen’t. Ben Simmons is outright scared to take shots outside the paint. Magic was a very solid mid range shooter, an 85% free throw shooter and even though 3’s were the weakest part of his game, he would still take them when his team needed them and shot them at 30% for his career. Just enough to keep defenses honest. As a matter of fact, in Magic’s last couple of seasons he was taking 2-3 3’s a game shooting around 35%. Ben Simmons needs to work on his jumper or he’ll never be respected in half court situations.

    Okay, but like the quality/ content of this video is 10/10 - awesome job.
    Simmons and Embiid would work out so well if Simmons matched up with players his size (still a great defender) and was more confident with his outside shots. Embiid is such a big body that he needs to play in the post more and abuse defenders smaller than him than always taking shots outside the paint.
    Things to make the roster efficient: Simmons, 3-point specialist, Harris, defensive PF (not Horford), Embiid. Richardson to the bench as a role player, a true six man like Iggy, Lou, Dinwiddie, and a backup center with size.

    Simmons is like a big Scottie Pippen on the defensive end. Can guard 1 to 5. Definitely a weapon for the Nets esp against Bucks, GS, Celtics etc. Nets lost a dynamic scorer in Harden but fill up a lots of needs. They got Drummond who can block shots and can dominate in rebounds. Extra sharp shooter in Curry and another veteran pg in Dragic. Harden seems nice in paper but the Nets actually get way better. Just hope Kyrie can play full time and Simmons in a right mindset then who knows anything can happen. Like their chance for the championship better than with Harden tho.

      Brook Lopez is one of the worst defensive rebounding bigs in league history lol

    • @Daily0Dylan
      @Daily0Dylan 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Thanosdidtherighthing The problem is that good defense is not directly the result of good defensive rebounding. Yes, being a dominant rebounder is often the trademark of dominant defensive bigs (KG, Duncan, Bill Russell, Wilt, Hakeem, and even Rodman if you want to consider him a big), but Lopez is an exception. I don't like to inundate people with stats, but Brook's impact on the defensive end can be aptly summarized by some of the nerdy shit when it shows over and over again that he's one of the best defensive bigs in the league across multiple metrics. He's 2nd in the league in defensive rating on the best defensive team in the league, 7th in the league in defensive real plus-minus, 9th in the league in the D-RAPTOR stat, 6th in defensive box plus minus, and 4th in the league for defensive win shares. Although he is prone to getting beat on switches on guards and being a well-below average defensive rebounding center, his rim protection is some of the absolute best in the league. Of the 50 or so players who have defended the most shots under 6 feet from the rim (all players who defended 5 or more of these shots per game), Brook Lopez has had the best success rate, allowing only 44.1% of these shots at the rim to convert. He has a large enough sample size of these shots defended at the rim to make this stat indicative of being a superb rim protector this year, even if it's just because the system allows him to be so. For comparison, Gobert has allowed 48.4% of these shots to convert. I'm not here to argue he's better than Gobert or AD or even his teammate Giannis, but Lopez deserves some respect for his defensive output this season.

    • @Daily0Dylan
      @Daily0Dylan 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@user-of7jx8fn8q I agree with you, especially for this season, but I never argued or implied AD was a worse defender than Gobert? Lol, I'm confused.

      2) He should and will more than likely finish as a member of the (Tony Allen voice) First Team All-Defense...which, even if you argue he's only on there because of his position (being guard-eligible), that still makes his performance on defense this season top 5 or top 10.
      3) In my opinion, he should probably finish 3rd or 4th, alongside AD and Gobert as Giannis wins DPOY.
