I love your moday Haydn symphonies series. Why is his music so great? Many austrian composers are my favorites ( Mozart, Haydn and Minkus for ballet music). Classical music is the best and never boring.
Each Haydn symphony, each measure, each rhythm, each color, each note, reflects the greatness of this genius called "father of the symphony"....I have been following, listening and enjoying, for months, since the symphony # 1 until this #44 and I can't stop enjoying it. I have more than half of the journey left...........I suggest the wonderful adventure of enjoying each and every one of the symphonies of this genius...
You’re absolutely 100% right that this is a fantastic symphony, but totally 100% wrong to refer to Haydn as ‘father’ of the symphony. Haydn had absolutely *nothing* to do with the conception of the symphony, a point at which a real father’s presence is essential. Search Sammartini and Brioschi in Milan, Wagenseil and Monn in Vienna, Johann Stamitz, Richter, Holzbauer, Fils in Vienna for starters if really interested in the origins of the symphony; Haydn comes nowhere in the paternity case.
I am certain that it is wrong to point him out as the father of the symphony. My opinion is that many (not just me...), believe that he is the father of the symphony, due to the number of symphonies he composed...nothing more than that.

Haydn can only be considered the ‘father of the symphony’ if: i) One disregards entirely the meaning of the word ‘father; ii) One ignores every known fact about the origin of the symphony; iii) One’s knowledge is based on reading TH-cam comments, and the opinions of those whose ignorance exceeds their knowledge by a significant margin. If you look through the TH-cam comments, a fourth objection arises with this disinformation as one will find comments from listeners inveigled into thinking that Haydn’s Symphony 1 is the first symphony ever composed - entirely based on the ‘father’ baloney. Regarding the number of symphonies composed, it is irrelevant; 18th century composers turned them out in huge numbers, indeed Mozart’s output over a much shorter lifetime is little different from that of Haydn over a lifetime more than twice as long, and both were dwarfed by the number composed by Dittersdorf for example.
Symphony 44 is dated 1770/71, but is definitely not 1772 which is the year of Symphonies 45, 46 and 47 (along with most notably the Opus 20 string quartets).
You’re quite right that Haydn Symphony 44 is an absolute masterpiece and it is one of the greatest of all ‘sturm und drang’ type symphonies, however, is absolutely not ‘sentimental’; do we have a linguistic false friend here ?
