    The Adagio easily takes the cake for the best piece of music ever written, in my opinion, of course.

      All the symphonies mentioned in this thread are very fine indeed and represent examples of the greatest ever sturm und drang symphonies, most of which were written by Haydn.
      Charles Rosen in one of the standard texts on music of the period - The Classical Style (1971) - wrote that at this time c.1772, Haydn was writing music:
      ‘…on a level that no other composer of Haydn’s time could equal or even approach’.
      For anyone interested in learning more about these exceptional and unique works written over Haydn’s sturm und drang period, the following list might be a useful guide.
      Haydn wrote 19 symphonies where the particular characteristics of the style are evident to a greater extent (the minor key works) or a lesser extent (the major key ones).

      Non sono d’accordo assolutamente; questa è una grande sinfonia in tutti e quattro movimenti e non è sopravvalutato.
      È una sinfonia profonda, appassionata, e bella, tipico dello stile ‘sturm und drang’; forse il tuo giudizio è sbagliato.

    I am usually very much in agreement with Christopher Hogwood about doing the repeats in Haydn symphonies, but in the case of the first movement here I think the recapitulation and conclusion are so sublime that actually to play the repeat cheapens them.

    • @bobshifimods7302
      @bobshifimods7302 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm afraid that I completely disagree with Hogwood on this issue. Doing so became part of his downfall, sadly. Haydn may have marked repeats but these are for commercial not artistic reasons.

    • @lymanmj
      @lymanmj ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I do not agree. Hogwood is recreating an historically accurate performance here, including instruments of Haydn's time. There was no Internet then, no recordings. Once a listener heard a melody, they were given another immediate chance to hear it with the repeats. When would they ever expect to hear this symphony again? For most, the answer was most likely "never". In this instance of a single hearing, especially, the repeats - which I happen to like a lot - seem perfectly in place.
      For me, the key to appreciating Haydn to the fullest is in mentally placing myself in the time he wrote this wonderful music. Living under a monarchy, with no indoor plumbing, terrible medicine, poor understanding of basic scientific principles, slow travel and glacial information flow, questionable educational attainment by citizens, and a generally unhealthy environment by present-day standards - to me it is a miracle (NPI) that he created such a huge and rich body of art - at all.

      You make some good points, the only thing that I would add is that a failure to observe a da capo (repeat) instruction in the score has the effect of unbalancing both the movement and the work as a whole.
      Mozart, Haydn, and then Beethoven *all occasionally removed the da capo marking when they specifically wanted no repeat,* - we must therefore assume that *they specifically DID want them playing at all other times* and therefore expected their works to be played as indicated.
      The da capo marking should not treated as a take-it-or-leave-it optional suggestion to the conductor.
      One final example to illustrate this: it is clear that Beethoven thought long and hard about whether or not there should be a da capo mark at the end of the first movement exposition of the ‘Eroica’ symphony; he decided he did want it - matter decided.
      (Beethoven also said that he hoped his music would be played exactly as he intended, we know this is true of Mozart and Haydn as well - cf. Haydn’s Applausus letter for example).
