Hampson is one of those singers that had the ability to make you melt when he begins to sing. His interpretation is beautiful. Any singer should be allowed to take pride in the fact that they can get in front of an audience almost every day and perform a song with the artistry that it deserves.

    Sure on this shining night
    Of starmade shadows round,
    Kindness must watch for me
    This side the ground.
The late year lies down the north.
All is healed, all is health.
    High summer holds the earth.
    Hearts all whole.
    Sure on this shining night
    I weep for wonder
    Wandering far alone
    Of shadows on the stars.

I would love to see someone singing this while wearing a black morphsuit - a singing shadow

He was always the most handsome man in opera. And with that voice…mesmerizing. I confess.

I agree with kazzlieloo,,,,,,,what a terrific combination; a handsome man with a spectacular voice and a beautiful song! It surely is pure bliss!! I have seen Mr Hampson in concert three times and am anxiously awaiting the fourth.

love Thomas Hampson . Whether see sings Stephen Foster , Samuel Barber . Schubert . Schumann or Berlioz . He gives human warmth and sincerity to every performance . Which I feel is probably backed up by a warm personality. Those who think they are qualified to criticize . Can you sing yourselves ?

I can't imagine there being a superfluous mike near the great Hampson.

Those crazy facial expressions are how you round out notes in your higher register. He may not have the biggest voice, but take note - the dude can sing and act the hell out of song lit

Too right! And anyone that doubts his obvious abilities should check out his recording of Billy Budd. So heartfelt, innocent and tragic. The combination of him as Budd and Rolfe Johnson as Vere is just mind-bendingly beautiful.

Nicely done but not always according to the markings. "All is health" is the high point of the piece and should be full voiced forte - the subsequent subito piano "High summer holds the earth" is then much more effective. Barber wanted it that way...othewise he would have written something else.

Good thing music is an art and can be performed the way the performer wants *and* the way the composer wanted it.

At choral training our prof used to tell us tenors to "use our mask". Maybe that's what he's doing.

The voice is great, but his expressions are rather ... peculiar. Throughout the piece, but especially at the end, he seems to take himself far more seriously than he does the music. That final little "I'm better than you" smile was quite off-putting.

If I had a voice like that and could command the pay he does for his performances, I'd take myself pretty seriously too. There's nothing wrong with knowing (an accepting) you're good, when you really are. As far as what you call the "I'm better than you" smile... many singers smile at the end of a song if they feel they've presented a good interpretation.

He’s taking pride in the music, taking the music seriously, etc. His emotions throughout are in service to the music. Unless you think it doesn’t warrant as much (9 years later lolololol w/e)
