    Okay, I am losing my mind here. She is taking about memories of past events. Before Dr. Patterson (who taught ASL to Koko the Gorilla) had a talk with a gorilla who told her about how he'd become an orphan, people thought animals other than ourselves were completely unable to reflect on past events. The fact that Bunny is discussing her previous walk with her dad is absolutely incredible from a biological/neurological standpoint!! 😍

      Mammals have very good episodic memories, and with most if not all their skill based on learning, it mean their ability to recalled previous experience become even more important

    • @jaschabull2365

      @@mawasorangutan
      Does learning necessarily require episodic memory, though? I seem to recall hearing cases of amnesiacs being able to learn despite not being able to form new episodic memories, so they couldn't tell you what happened yesterday, but they could find the bathroom in a place they'd been in for a few days. Also, there are cases of source amnesia where people know they know something but can't remember where they learned it, so it seems that having one without the other is possible.

    • @pandapanda246
      @pandapanda246 3 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      @@jaschabull2365 there is also a difference between forming memories and memory recall that plays into amnesiac cases. In many amnesiac cases, direct recall is impaired though episodic memories are formed, so for example new information can still be processed through semantic and procedural memory and recall connected with those areas despite not being able to associate them with an event or episode. A lot of aspects to consider here.

      That being said, the "limitation of creativity of the individual" would BE one of the limitations of SOME human brains I referred to. There are other limitations too.
      But this is all splitting hairs. I hope -- and I'm sure you possess enough creativity to hope also -- that human-animal communication will continue to advance and that we'll come to appreciate the intelligence and mental complexity of ALL our non-human relations.

    I wonder if asking for Dad is the herding instinct in her coming out? She's got Mom, that's great, but Dad is away from the pack and that is very annoying and not good. Being both Poodle and a Shepheard breed there's going to be a big part of her brain that wants everyone together before she can properly settle.

      Artemis. Bunny is part English Sheepdog. Not shepherd. Shepherds are guarding dogs sheepdogs do the herding. And, yes, i believe she is worried that "dad" is home but she cant see him. I had an english sheep dog growing up. And she would constantly "count" my brothers and I (4) and a neighbor friend. If she couldnt see one of us. She dashed around frantically looking for her "lost"sheep. Sheepdoodles are wonderful dogs. Poodles are very intelligent and so are old english sheepdogs

    Seeing Bunny's comprehension makes me have a glimmer of hope that my dogs understand more of what we say than we realise. Like our dogs know the word "soon" and "later" in reference to food. They know the name of everyone in the household. They may not have the same comprehension as Bunny, as it hasn't been nurtured in the same way, but they must have more of an idea than we realise.

      I've been wondering about that exact sentence. I don't think English grammar would be the best one for dogs. Bunny for example uses HMM? in front of a question. Some other languages do that as well. It would be so interesting if some linguistics took a look at this and deciphered dog grammar. Not only would it just be cool to know, it might also help us teach them to communicate even quicker, because we would be communicating in a language that's based on what's natural for THEM.

    1:28 i wonder if any pet in the world can understand the concept of work, just out of curiousity? i remember when i was a small child, i didn't understand where money came from. i just thought you got it for free at an ATM! "dad can't give you scritches right now; dad is at work", if Bunny could understand these words, "work" might equal "nasty daily prison that keeps dad away from his family"!

      Maybe not to concept of work, but you can get them to recognise that it means x person will be away for some time.

    Awww, thank YOU so much, Alexis for sharing your Bunny and your hard work. Bunny is wonderful (button for that?!). I wish my dear collie was still here, I'd have got a whole set of talking buttons immediately, he would have adored them. We talked a lot about food and his doggy friends. We had conversations all day long and somehow we both understood each other mostly (he knew about 300 words). I know he used to get frustrated when I didn't understand some of his dog 'words' so buttons would have been a whole new level for us....Though I always knew dogs are people, just a bit more hairy and odiferous ;-)

    Curious which sentence structure dogs prefer. Subject verb object (SVO like English), subject object verb (SOV like Korean/Yoda), or something else entirely like verb subject object (VSO). I wonder if homophones like hear/here is difficult for dogs to understand. Not to mention past tense and future tense forms did/do/doing, was/is/going to, etc.

    This is the greatest TH-cam channel I have ever watched in all the years of TH-cam! I just ordered these buttons for my dog today after seeing this. I already have these identical conversations with him, but they're one sided. I know he knows what I'm saying bc I've taught him tons of words for the 10 years I've had him. He has a very large vocabulary. Now, he can finally talk back. I cannot wait!!!!
