The clear plastic bags are used for water and mixing the isotonic drinks and shakes in. In the 80s, our SADF rations were just as loaded but with tins, not pouches. The breakfast cereal we got then was Pronutro (still available in stores over here) and we would pour the sachet into a clear bag, add water and give it a squeeze to mix, and then consume it from the bag. We did the same with the coffee as it wasnt always practical to light a stove. The older rat packs included hardtack biscuits, either a whole wheat or a smooth one. If you had a tin of meatballs, we would spread them on a biscuit, squeeze some squeezy cheese on top and then another biscuit on top to make a cheese burger, LOL.
Dried fruit like the peaches is quite traditional and are eaten as a snack. But they can be rehydrated and eaten or added to a curry where they soften up quite a bit. We use a lot of chutney here too, a brand called Mrs Balls. Great with cheese but a must have with curry.
    Great review. Cheers from SA

It is awesome to hear some of the history and uses on this ration. I would love to try that cheeseburger sounds like a great way to mix and match. Thanks for the information and for watching.

Just to add to Sean, this is a commercial replica of the SANDF ration or RAT Pact we use to call it, not the same as what we had in the military. Nice review regards (Srg Prinsloo SANDF 91 to 2006)

The one they still use one that is Similar to this, just more modern, the one that people think is the sandf mre isn’t the go to mre for the sandf. That one was just used once and that company now uses it as a marketing technique. So you can’t really purchase the ‘real’ current sandf mre, only the one they used temporarily. So the current ones are still sometimes in Tins like that I’ve heard

I'm currently serving in the South African army. I'm in the infantry. What you got is basically the same as we get except for the water purification bit. Those bags we use to make the isotonic drinks in the field. Most of us don't enjoy the MREs but they're very helpful in the field and keep us going. My personal favourite MRE is the chicken breyani (Indian dish) followed by beef curry. Overall I just like the convenience of the MRE but most of us would rather prepare our own food if we can. All those small snacks like the bars, dried fruit etc are the stuff I love taking with on patrols.

Never had an Esbit stove in our rat packs back in the 80s. Just scratch a groove in the dirt, light a tab, put it in the groove and set your canteen cup aka "firebucket" over it to boil. Back then the packs had meat in small cans and we used to convert one into a stove for future use. The bags are for mixing drinks. Fill and roll top, shake and bite open a corner to drink from. In SADF slang they were "effies" from FL i.e. french letter / condom.

Great review. I am South African and a lot of what you had in there are very much South African staples. You did pronounce 'samp' correctly and it is used as a substitute for rice. Its very popular and you also get a variant that is mixed with beans. The chutney and tomato sauce was definitely meant for the curry, especially the chutney. Curry is almost always served with chutney here.

This is south africa, no stove, it's a fire starter. Super c sweets are vitamin c glucose sweets. Samp is like a starchy corn. Chutney is a peachy tart sauce used for food to enhance flavour. The porridge is white star brand most likely. We don't usually use water purification tablets as our water is safe to drink. But that's for when the men drink from the rivers etc. If you would like some help with names/ brands feel free to ask.

You know we look at MRE and start thinking of them as hiking food.
They really aren’t .. if you were going on a four day jaunt would you carry four of these.
The military may carry one 24 hour ration but they depend on resupply and kitchens also.
I like mre meals but they are not practical for several day hikes . You can do better putting together your own meals from retail stores. Maybe an entree or two to break up the food monotony.
