As a young boy I got ahold of this VHS and was mesmerized start to finish every time. Still I rewatch in awe of the crisp details and plot turbulence unfold.
Every shot carefully created to look like an Old Master's painting. Incredible cinematography. A feast for the eyes. A completely underrated Masterpiece.

While Ridley Scott is a great filmmaker, you should never compare ANYONE to the one and only true genius of cinema, Stanley Kubrick. Barry Lyndon is his definitive masterpiece. Glad Kubrick never got to make Napoleon and instead found this gem by Thackeray. Napoleon would never have transcended the name/context whereas this tale about an anonymous social climber becomes a universal, timeless meditation on the futility of worldly affairs.

Ah ok, I didn’t notice that problem. I could not notice his English accent because I’m Italian, but the next time I will see the movie I want listening O’neal’s accent better.
@@charlesritz6509 This is not really a major flaw. Except for a few diphthongs and pronunciation differences. The American English accent is in fact as close to the average Irish an accent one can find.
I agree O'Neal was miscast anyway - but I also agree he was not helped by not being given enough preparation for an Irish accent. It jars in several places in the film.

Not any more. Few serious film lovers today overlook it.

I think Kubrik got much if his visual inspiration from the artwork of Hogarth, or am I wrong?
I don't know. But I'm sure kubrick studied Flemish painting extensively to recreate the cinematography and the light of the movie
