  • A report on how Western Australia implemented a Myki style ticketing system which is more reliable, a fraction of the cost, and could be easily copied and upscaled to meet Melbourne's current and future population needs. Captured from Channel 7 6PM news on Thursday 30th April 2009

I wish the GoCard barriers in Brisbane would open that fast.
Also, I think it is a very pertinent point made about Perth doing their system for $35 Mil versus $1 Bil for Melbourne.
Melbourne should have just bought an off the shelf system like what they did in Perth, Brisbane and Hobart.

What your looking at is 3 carriages, each carriage are as long as much the same around OZ. Just the bit between each are open make it look like one carriage

Except half the trains in Perth are 2 cars, running alone or as a 4-car set

@jeppikah i think you and me have the same problem, I usually have to try 3 barriers before one will let me through.

Perth trains are fast and crowed because there are 3car carriages

Well, if the try and tell the drunks to move on.... they could ether
    1. Get their ass kicked
    2. Kick their asses, and lose their job
    3. Talk them to move out (which never works)

Sydney is getting a Smart Card. We copyed the Oyster Card.
    We are calling it Opal

That's quite true, but there are thousands of larger cities which have had larger networks and CBDless style metro services operating way better than Melbourne ever will. And for them, Smartcards came in several years ago.
If other cities CAN do it, why can't we? We can't run a train system right, trams are always late, buses are unreliable and you can't even pay for your transport properly.

Myki / go card / Opal / Smart rider, oh great idea (another piece of plastic in our over loaded wallets) tag on tag off but here in lies the problem mainly the "tag off", the more people that are using a travail card the SLOWER it will take you to get off. oh sure faster getting ON but what ever happen to the "Multi-rider" I remember buying them, put it in the machine like a punch card and THATS it none of this remembering to tag off.

Perth trains run well because there are only a few lines & hardly any passengers. The ticket system might be good but don't believe the hype about the rest of it. See for yourself the empty trains hurting down the middle of a busy freeway.

No we just don’t make the same mistakes as the east. We preserve corridors and build lines THEN release land so we stay ahead of population growth. Perth today has many lines for a city of only 2 million.

Melbourne is so much better, legit the easier place in the world to fare evade ticket inspectors really don’t care tbh I’ve been in PT without ticket heaps of times and I just say I have no ID and they move along, funny that they don’t care lol
